Quality Hefeweizen, and in a proper glass!
    Mike M.

I have a great fondness for authentic German food and drink. They're good to begin with, they're quite filling, and they remind me of the good times that came with being stationed in Bavaria as a young soldier. Think of it as a taste of my first home away from home. There aren't all that many places in North Carolina to get my fix of Deutsche Küche, so it was nice to find one that was new to me in -- of all places -- little ol' Troutman. Bavarian Kitchen is something I'd instead expect to find in a major metro area, but here it was hidden along the small town's main drag. The crowds moving in and out throughout my visit suggest that plenty of other people already knew about what a pleasant experience this is. As I was visiting alone, it made sense for me to take a spot at the bar rather than taking up a whole table to myself. Besides, I knew sampling the beer early on would help give me some hint as to whether this spot was the real deal. A half-maß of Paulaner Hefe helped convince me quickly. I then went with a more Swiss approach to my meal, choosing a style of schnitzel more commonly found in that neighboring nation, stuffed with cheese, ham and mustard. This "leckerli" was delicious indeed, as were the Spätzle noodles that accompanied it. Normally the dish comes with a side salad, but I also have a love of German-style red cabbage, so I asked for the Rotkraut instead, and it was among the best I've had in years. I chose to spoil myself a little after the main meal by adding a bit of cherry schnapps and a helping of apple strudel to my order. These were good as well. Service was a bit slow sometimes at the bar, which did not seem to be the case out in the dining room, as I saw the waitresses moving quickly all night. Also worth noting, the bartender struggled with his knowledge of German -- even though all the menu items are identified by their German names. "Kirschwasser -- is that a kind of beer?," he asked about my after-dinner drink order. If you're gonna work at a place that emphasizes authenticity, you should probably strive to learn the terminology. And these stumblings in service quality are the only things keeping me from a fifth star. Reservations seem like a wise move here, especially since my experience suggests the quality of service may be better when seated at a table. And this spot definitely seems deserving of your attention if, like me, you're a fan of good German eats and beer.

Awesome food, service and great atmosphere! Been wanted to go here for a few months but could never convince the wife because she didn't think she like any German food. Well finally convinced her to give it a try and we loved it! The Hefeweizen was great in to start! We got the feta with olives, tomatoes and pepperoncini appetizer and the German pretzel both were great. My son got the Jagersnitzel with fries, I got the Swiss yummy and wife got the Cordon Blue snitzel and all were great. The mushroom sauce was delicious, the fries with that German ketchup were so good. And the apple strudel with ice cream is must get!

Retired chef and winegrower; we ate here tonight. Surpassed expectations. Salad... layered with great greens, potato salad, bean salad and carrots, excellent dressing. I had the sausage/potato salad/red cabbage, best bratwurst I ever had. Everything perfect. My partner had the sauerbraten and spaetzle. Perfect. Would have had dessert cake if it were something German but appreciate they were doing a red/white/blue for our country's 250th. Excellent servers. Adorable atmosphere. We will definitely go back. Very large portions, had to get a takeout container. Interesting German pinot noir and the owner came and spoke to us and is very knowledgeable about German wine. Half the price of the miserable experience we had at CarpeVinum121 a couple of weeks ago.

We showed up and the place was packed. No reservations either so I assumed I was headed for a Domino's run. Fortunately, our very lovely and energetic host offered we could sit at the bar. I'm glad we did. The food is very authentic. At least as I remember it when I was stationed there. Very nice pretzel with hot mustard to start. The schnitzel is thin and well fried. Even with the mushroom gravy on top it stayed crispy the whole way through the meal. Mashed potatoes or champ would have been better but the spatzle was nice. The sausage and sauerkraut was nice but I feel my wife missed out on the schnitzel... Best of all was the service. They were half staffed and our hostess was flying around the room but always had time to stop by the bar and chat.. This was a perfect date night experience for my wife and I. We will be back often!

Bavarian Kitchen is under new ownership. Our dinner was outstandingly memorable and delightful. The new owners are pleasant and so excited to have the opportunity to share this wonderful food. This is a must stop if you are anywhere near Troutman. It's authentic and genuine German food. Apple strew-dell is new to the line up. And it's beyond delish. Full of apples, cinnamon and nuts stuffed in pastry and served golden brown. OMG! I can't wait to return to try the next amazing dish.

    Food, drinks, atmosphere, service

First time ever eating German food and this place did not disappoint! From the service, to the food, to the beer and wine, everything was top notch and AMAZING! The portions were very generous but the quality went right along with it. The owners were so kind and made you feel right at home. Tina, one of the waitresses was amazing and also so kind. Highly recommend this place. If you're looking for a great experience, mixed with fun, amazing food, drinks, ambiance, and awesome service, look no more! Bavarian Kitchen Restaurant is the place to be! Thank you for such a wonderful experience, my husband and I will be back, and will be bringing many friends with us!

The food is as authentic Bavarian food as you can get in the Lake Norman area. The pork roast with dumpling was delicious and tender. It was as good as what I had in Rothenburg a few months ago. There was a lot of it so I took leftovers home and it was just as good the next day. Husband enjoyed the hefty portion of Gypsy Schnitzel. Both entrees came with a side salad. Really enjoyed the German beer. Restaurant was booked full so it was a bit noisy on the Friday we were there. Ambiance was lively. Reservations are strongly recommended. If you walk in without one, you get seated at the bar if there's room. Service was outstanding. Our server had great timing, would pass by to check on us regularly but was never intrusive. Parking can be limited since it's a shared lot with multiple businesses so you might have to drive around to find a space. We parked in front of the pawn shop and walked the length of the lot to the restaurant. We enjoyed our visit greatly and would love to return.

Amazing food! A great hole in the wall with a great German vibe! Wiener Schnitzel, Spaetze, Wine Kraut, and Red Cabbage were all delicious! Always great finding amazing German restaurants when least expected since you don't come across them every day. Our server was also great! Will return when in the area again. You won't regret it....just go!

Located in a Strip Mall off Main Street in Troutman, this charming little restaurant is quite busy. Although they have a large menu, all but two items are made with pork. The fried pounded pork dishes are all very large portions. Most people take half of their meal home. French Fries came with our meals but we optioned too have spaetzel instead. It was very bitter tasting from the sauce put on it. The service was excellent. Prices were reasonable. Be sure to make a reservation.

There's plenty of outdoor seating available as well but it was pretty hot that afternoon. We started with a couple large pretzels and a variety of beers- I just had a prosecco though, so if beer isn't your thing, there are alternative options. For my entree, I ordered the pastrami sandwich and Mac and cheese. Other common orders included the salmon, donner bowl, schnitzel and sausage sampler. The food came out quickly and we all ate in relative silence which is a good indication of satisfaction! @azfitfoodfun

She was very personable and checked on us repeatedly. After she went off duty we got stuck with James who when I asked to bring us a craft of water for the table said " I could, but we have a water station down there" and he pointed to a far away bank of cups and water and then said "And I don't know why you guys aren't inside". And I said "since I'm a paying guest I would think you could bring us water ". He reluctantly brought us water then disappeared and didn't come back out. Here's my complaint: Where I choose to sit with my party is my choice James, I don't care if you're hot and sweaty, I'm the customer. Telling me to get my own water is unacceptable. Why you chose to only bring one refill of water to a table of 8 is on you. You might be too delicate for the job James.

A fun, character-filled beer spot, but the food didn't quite live up to the experience…read more I met up with family at The Flying Saucer in the University area. It's seat-yourself, so we had to pull a couple tables together to fit everyone. One thing to note: it was very warm inside, so I'd recommend sitting toward the back where it's more comfortable. My boys really enjoy this place, so I wanted to like it more, but the food was just okay and a bit pricey for what you get. Most items run about $14.99-$21.99, even appetizers are at entrée prices. I ordered the Carne Asada Fries appetizer ($15.99) after hearing they were "fire." The steak had good flavor, but the portion was light--fine for sharing, but not very filling. One entree, Big Dipper ($15.49), a roast beef seemed overcooked and there wasn't much meat on a large bun. Two people from the table ordered pizza. Neither ate more than 2 pieces. On the positive side, the beer selection is excellent, with plenty of options on tap and in bottles and cans--from Guinness to local IPAs. The atmosphere is also unique: plates cover the walls and ceiling from guests who've completed their beer challenge, which makes for a fun, quirky vibe you really have to see in person. Dart boards for those who want to be a bit more active. Overall, it's a great spot for beer and atmosphere, but the food and pricing didn't quite match the experience for me.
