Chicks, feeds, supplies, beddings, and medication were purchased to get me started. They were not pushy to sell things I didn't need. But I did end up buying some eggs (to eat) anyways because farm fresh eggs are so much better than grocery eggs. I texted them when I got home with several more questions and seriously they were so helpful. We need more local small businesses like them. Caring for livestock is hard, and we have lost three of the girls. Baxter Barn has been very helpful in helping me understand what might have gone wrong, what are the inherent problems with owning livestock, what questions I need to ask our vet, and how to make improvements to promote the health of my flock. I will continue to work with Baxter Barn not only to increase my flock, but also for feed, meds, and advice. Poultry is seriously infested with mites and lice. Some of the birds are underweight also. Well meaning friends purchased 5 stardust mix for us and delivered to our coop not realizing how infested the birds were. There is now a lot of work ahead at our farm to get them back to health. Drove out to Baxter Barn looking to buy some chicks. To their credit, the animals and products at Baxter are great quality. It's clear that they take good care of their animals before customers receive them and they care about the homes their animals go to! I think that's great and so far we have no complaints with anything in regards to quality. That said, I've truly never encountered worse customer service. The staff were cold, condescending, and quite frankly just rude. To top it off-- when we got home, we realized they had charged us for items they forgot to give us! We were told "sorry" and to drive all the way back out to pick it up... super disappointing and off-putting after an already distasteful experience. Excellent prices, quality and service. I'm updating my review here because I see a lot of people posting reviews based on their success with chicks. While I don't think survivability has much to do with where they are purchased, many people seem to assume that it is entirely based off of the seller instead of their ability to properly care for the chicks. If you are having issues keeping your chicks alive, there's a pretty good chance that that is on you. That said, for those that want to blame the "store" for how their chicks fair, I have purchased broiler chicks in the past from Baxter Barn and had 100% success rate. I came here to get a mainecoon kitten. I was charged for a mainecoon but now that my cat is no longer a kitten, I'm aware that it is most definitely not a mainecoon. I love my kitty but I would have rather not paid the amount I did for her seeing as she's definitely just a tabby. I don't appreciate being lied to. We went on a tour of this facility and made a horrible decision of purchasing 7 chickens from them. After a month quarantine we had two die (now we know from MAREKS DISEASE) the other 5 have overcome the disease but unfortunately infected our entire flock. We have lost and continue to loose many birds from this horrible disease. The owner was less than helpful and thought it was all from shock from change. I spent over $200 on these birds and Baxter Barn hardly refunded us 1/4 of this. Our loss continues to grow and we have learned such a huge lesson on BIOSECURITY. Please know I was hesitant to write this bad review because I really like to support small business; however, I hope this stops any other flock from becoming infected. The experience of making an appointment (Feb 2021) and showing up to buy our day-old chicks and all necessary items was fine. They seemed to know their field and talked us out of a top heat brooder (too cold for PNW chicks in early February) and into a heat lamp hanging above the box. (I made sure to secure it in multiple places to prevent fire hazards.) We were a bit disappointed that we couldn't choose the chicks and instead Cory chose all 5 and brought them to us in a box. The 5 chicks seemed healthy and happy. All five made it to maturity, but one did end up being a rooster (so sad) so we had to re-home him. He was sold as an Olive Egger but his coloring was exactly that of a Barred Rock. Not sure what breed he actually is. We just realized (at 24 weeks) that our "Golden Comet" is actually a Buff Orpington. After many weeks of noticing characteristics that are not typical of Golden Comets (e.g. her large size, yellow coloring with black speckled tail feathers, pink-white leg color) we did some sleuthing and found many photos of Buff Orpingtons that look exactly like her. While Baxter Barn staff seem to know their stuff, we were surprised by 2 out of 5 breeds being different from what we asked for. I was happy to support a small local family business, but be aware that you may fall in love with different chickens than you requested. read more

I love this place. It literally brings a smile to my face every time I drive up, pass the big fish and pull in to see all of their awesome yard art, signs, and equipment for various farm animals. My two kids and I went there to buy a few pullets to add to our flock after seeing an ad on Craigslist as we wanted to get some breeds that weren't offered at our local feed store. I called several times to set up a time to be there and never received a call back. Sent a text and got an immediate response and made an appt. I looked up their website and was really excited to check it out, especially seeing how kid friendly it was. Boy were we disappointed! Although the place is really neat, the owner Cory was so not nice. After telling a few people of my experience there, I heard this is pretty much the norm for him. We got there and he basically ignored us doing paperwork or something until I went in to talk to him even though I said hi through the door as soon as we got there. Weird. After acting very put out, he led us to the chicken barn. On the walk there, there is much to attract kids and things for them to look at - on purpose. But every time my 6 year old son went to look or ran a few feet ahead, he told me to keep him with me then finally yelled at my son saying "every fence here will shock you!" I'm thinking that you have to pay the farm "entrance fee" along with purchasing animals in order for them to be able to enjoy the farm attractions. He never got close to anything electric or dangerous and Cory was just so rude! We got to the barn and planned on picking out chickens ourselves but after telling him what we wanted, he just started grabbing them up, squawking their heads off, and holding them upside down by their legs. Poor chickies! I wanted to leave at this point but my 10 year old daughter said we had to save the chicks from him. She was pretty upset, as was I, and my son was scared of him! I had brought a carrier but he wouldn't let me bring it back with us for some reason. He carried those 4 poor squawking and frightened chickens back the way we came like that then proceeded to cram them in the crate with no care. When I asked him about the mini donkeys seen on the way back, he just basically told me how hard to keep they are, were nothing like my horses and how I couldn't handle them. So presumptuous and rude! When it came time to pay, he wanted me to buy all this stuff and feed from him because I bought my supplies at The Grange Supply - he then told me I was basically feeding my chickens the "wal-mart of chicken feed" and was awful for buying from there because Cenex owns it. I bought the supplement to lessen their stress (because he totally stressed them out) and got the heck out of there. When I told the people at the Grange about my experience and what he said about them, they told me they have heard it before and that he bad mouths them all the time. The manager was very diplomatic, saying everyone is entitled to their opinion. I brought the pullets home and one died over night (even though I purchased the stress reducing supplement). Then, just curious, I sent a text telling him and asking if he had a health guarantee. Well of course not but I was welcome to come buy another! As if I would ever go back there... read more

Last Friday June 23 my son and I drove 2 hours to Baxter Barn for a few Rhode Island Red chicks. I chose Baxter Barn because they have a lot of good information and pictures on the website. We got three chicks, 25 bag of feed, warming lamp, some immune boost and a few other items. Sadly (VERY sadly) two chicks ofthe three died in 24 and 36 hours. We were upset! As this was happening Saturday I called and talked to one of the young fellas at Baxter Barn who encouraged us to keep at it. We tried so hard to keep them alive by feeding them water with immune boost via dropper bottle every hour, but it didn't help. Sunday we went to a closer place with chicks and got 4 Easter Eggers. We kept them separate from our Red for 12 hours longer, and when we joined them we were glad to see our remaining Red gets along with them fine. Wednesday (today) I called Cory and we talked on the phone about what happened. He is passionate about chick and chicken health. Baxter Barn has designed their own Immune Boost and their own feed in accordance with their principles about PREVENTING over medicating animals. He was very sorry for my very bad luck with the chicks and gave a refund for the chicks that died and the Amprolium. I wish to emphasize that the Baxter Barn FEED has a lot of science and thought put into it. It is a special formulation and is worth your research. read more

Unless you're wealthy, I wouldn't shop there. I came here just to look at chickens and got a lecture instead. (i wasnt planning to buy one). The lecture was about chicken diet mostly. I was told how bad it is to let chickens eat grass and feed them non-organic corn. "Its like eating McDonalds every day" It reminded me of talking to some opinionated bro on a Paleo diet. Im sure he knows better than I do, and is so passionate about it because he cares about the chickens. But grass is free, and chickens are scavengers. This is a fantastic place! It's a historical farm that has been taken over by a family who have opened it to the public ($5 per person). You can see all their animals from chickens to donkeys. They are all about being environmentally responsible and educating others. My kids love seeing the frizzle turkey when we go buy feed. It's well kept and clean and the animals are all healthy. They sell eggs, chickens, turkeys and other animals. You can keep up with what's new and hatching on Facebook. There is also a small store on site where they sell animal feed, feeding supplies, animal treats, coops, etc. Cory is very knowledgable and every time I've been there he has taken the time to talk to me and answer my questions. I feel smarter after only having been there 10 minutes. :-) You might want to call first if stopping by. It's not like a regular store with regular hours. I go here for feed and chickens. It's an hour drive for us. Make sure you make an APPOINTMENT first if you want animals. We drove all the way there only to be turned away. I almost didn't go back..... The feed is worth it, so are the chickens. I won't ship live chicks, he hatches on site I believe and has breeds you can't get from the farm store. PLUS his are vaccinated. Local breeders, etc often don't vaccinate. The owner is extremely knowledgable, but not very friendly. So don't expected a hearty welcome. You almost feel like you're bothering him. Overall I only go there due to great feed and healthy animals. Price is a tad higher, but the quality is there. read more

I visited this place yesterday after driving an hour from Bothell to get chicks only to leave empty handed because Cory didn't want to sell me chicks of different ages (I wanted Easter Eggers yesterday and to come back next week for Olive Eggers when he got them in. He wanted me to just come back next week). Utterly ridiculous. His condescending rude attitude can barely be concealed and when you don't do exactly as he recommends, he doesn't even try concealing it. He is just rude. Easily one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. I explained to him that I have raised chicks of different ages with no problems. I have enough sense to know bigger chicks need to be kept separate from smaller. I have a brand new walk-in coop and take excellent care of my animals. I finally got exasperated after going back and forth with him and told him I would go somewhere else. He said "okay" in a "suit yourself" way. My kids were very disappointed as was I so I left and pulled over to find another seller. After explaining my experience at Baxter Barn and what I was looking for, that seller laughed and said, "That was Cory you dealt with! Typical Cory!" That seller supplies chicks to Cory and said he is always like that. After I left a negative review for Baxter Barn on Facebook, Cory sent me a friends request from his personal page. Creepy. Needless to say, I will never go back. We bought 25 quail from Baxter Barn. The Quail were around 2-3 weeks old. The owner was very helpful and gave us a lot of good info. The quail are about to turn 8 weeks old and all of them are very healthy. We started buying our chicken and quail feed from Baxter barn also. A neat gem close to the city. We live on the Eastside and were looking to become suburban chicken owners for fresh eggs. After doing some research, Australorp was the breed we sought after. I found Baxter Barn after searching the web, and they care for a wide variety of breeds, including our sweet Australorps. They are a year old now, and are as happy and healthy as ever! We bought their first round of feed, bedding, Immune boost (Baxter Barn special), grit and AmproMed from Baxter Barn - it was convenient they supplied everything and our chickens grew up strong and healthy. We have since bought 3 additional chicks from them (Cuckoo Marans) and they just started laying eggs this week! Extremely helpful, friendly, and great small business to support. Appointment not needed for the shop, but check with their Facebook page (or even send a text!) to check on livestock. It was convenient they post their current offerings on Facebook. read more

This farm is incredibly well maintained. The owner seems to not only have hired such an incredible and knowledgeable staff but really seems to know his stuff. From a true pet feed store to a farm you can tour, he and his staff really know what they're doing. I noticed some of the reviews that didn't make much sense to me, one of the unfavorable reviews has a profile photo with a finger up her nose. I believe that speaks for itself. Visit the farm and learn, it's that simple. The owner seems quite technically minded and can answer any questions you and your group may have. Long story short- bought 10 chickens, 2 died within a month. I went there in September to buy my first pullets, bedding and feed. Prices for 5-6 month old ones were between $20-$30, a bit on the high end. Arrived there on time, and went inside the barn to look at the chickens. On the way there I noticed that they're raising various other animals on that farm, like pigs, turkeys, ducks, geese, alpacas, horses, and whatnot. which is cool but later I realized that increases the risk of cross-contamination of parasites. Anyway, went inside to see the chickens...they're all kept in a closed barn with no windows and no access to outside. They do carry lots of breeds and most seem to be pure, so if you're looking for some exotic ones you might be in luck. I picked the pullets got home and let them out in the run. They all looked super shocked as if they'd never seen sunlight before...which might be true, since they're all raised indoors. They hid under the coop for almost a week, barely moving or getting out to eat, which (I read) should be expected from a new flock although it seemed a bit too long. On the first day I noticed live worms in one's poop- that means if one has them all of them have them- and their poop was very soft/diarrhea and had a distinctive bad smell. Another sign that they had some sort of intestinal parasites. They all seemed very underweight, the breast bone was prominently sticking out. One of them was obviously more sick than all others, sitting in a corner and being lethargic all day, and two others were coughing/sneezing with visible bubbling mucus in the eyes (signs of Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection, which unfortunately I read it's chronic, but common in chickens). I called them the day after the first chicken died, just to be told that I should've fed them "probiotics" because they might've been stressed out on the trip home which triggered the coccidosis infection. I was never told/recommended that they need to be fed probiotics before I went there to purchase them. So far, to sum up: round worms, mycoplasma gallisepticum and coccidosis. The second chicken didn't show that many symptoms but was found dead mysteriously one morning. Ran to the nearest pet store to buy antibiotics for all three diseases. Now most of them are growing very slow (they look small for their age) but seem to be picking up weight slowly. On a positive note, the wood shavings and the feed were pretty good. At first they didn't like that feed but slowly started to eat more of it. In conclusion- please do yourself a favor and don't buy any chickens from this farm unless you're willing to through the extra effort and spend extra money on medication or pay veterinarian bills. read more

I recently discovered Baxter Barn! It's a local gem that has excellent customer service, even after the sale, as well as a large variety of large animal feed as well as small household animal food. It's got alot of pretty cool yard art as well as very unique bird feeders. The icing on the cake for me was the baby goats and chickens roaming at this beautiful setting nestled in Fall City. We got 6 one-day-old chicks from Baxter Barn three years ago, all different breeds, all of them were female (yay! as requested!), all were healthy and are still thriving, producing a variety of gorgeous brown, brown with speckles, white and green eggs. Baxter Barn was really focused on making sure we, as first time chicken people, were educated on how to take care of them properly. They provided us with baby chick meds, vitamin supplements to put in the water, and a one-sheet on when to give what, as well as a list of healthy chicken snacks for any time. We followed all instructions to the letter with great results. They are happy birds, they come running when they see us, like to be held, like to follow the kids around the lawn, and really like to eat our (chicken approved) kitchen scraps. We also buy our feed and other supplies at Baxter Barn, and the kids love to pet the cats, goats, and other critters when we are there. Love this place! Very poor experience. despite setting an appointment, i hit traffic on the 45 minute drive from South Seattle to buy some hens. upon arrival Cory says, "we stop selling hens at 1 PM because its too warm at 75 degrees or over" and they would die, and too stressful for them. (yeah, right Cory. unfortunately you know absolutely nothing about chicken transport. I've been raising them for years and no such thing. Also in the midwest where temperatures can soar much over the 90's, the chicken industry doesnt stop just for that. The other issue is that he keeps his hens in a metal shed. So maybe its baking in there alive. maybe thats where the stress comes from. I then asked if we could just look at them so that we knew what the inventory was so we could come back when its not warm. he said no, because the birds we see would likely be sold because he sells so many birds. Very poor experience and an utter waste of my time. I also observed his prices on cages, feed and equipment are far excessive of Coastal Farm & Ranch and Del's Feed. Very disappointed in my experience here. I set out to buy three more chicks to add to my flock of 12. When I got there he (the owner) closed the door to the chick shed so I couldn't follow him in and pick out my chicks. When he came out he closed the box without even showing me the chicks, handed me the box, and walked away. I should have pried open that thing right there and I'm definitely kicking myself for not. I drove home (20 min), opened that box, and the first thing I said was "that one's not going to make it." One of the three chicks was tiny, frail and lethargic. He barely had the strength to stand up. He died a few hours later, despite being placed in a properly heated brooder with fresh starter and water. Some chicks "fail to thrive", I know this, but if I had been able to pick out my chick, there is no way I would have picked that one. Honestly, I'm peeved that he'd even give me that sick of a chick. He must have known. It could barely stand. When you buy chicks from this place, you have to either buy a bag of the chick starter he makes ($14) or pay $2 extra per chick. Given that I have a new big bag of chick starter at home already, and since I was only getting three chicks, I opted to pay the extra $2. He made me sign a piece of paper that said he's not responsible if a chick dies. So returning the chick, despite it dying before it could even eat my starter, wasn't an option. Bye $5! In conclusion, I felt like the owner was just out to make as much money off me as possible. I do not recommend buying poultry here, but if you do, be more assertive than me and INSIST on picking your own chicks! read more

We booked a preschool field trip to Baxter Barn Spring 2018. It was an absolute blast. Baby animals everywhere (born and hatched on site for us to see and pet). I can't recommend this, family owned/local farm enough. Cory and his staff are very knowledgeable which is great for all your small farm or back yard chicken needs. He has great feed and treats for our chickens as well. Each year we purchase fertilized eggs from them to hatch in our class too. If you haven't been, you definitely should.
