    I was fortunate enough to have my brother and mother inspect and shop around at other self storage sites before choosing Bay Area Self Storage in San Mateo for me . . . and they know I am very picky. In my downsizing and move from my Sonoma County home after twenty-five years of living there, I needed a decent size storage unit for my belongings. After verbally describing my requirements, my family promptly rented a unit for me and my brother helped me move my things. At first, my downsizing was to move into a beautiful smaller cottage in the town of Muir Beach in Marin County. I only needed a percentage of my things to live there. But, just after a few months, my aging mother needed additional caregiver assistance and the timing was right for me to do that for her. So, I rented a second storage unit for my remaining things at Bay Area Self Storage, from Lynn and Garret Stark, the resident managers. I was given one-month's free rent because of the first storage unit I had there. Lynn and Garret also gave me a heavy-duty round padlock for free. That was a very nice touch. Lynn was helpful, informative, and kind from the very beginning with the new paperwork, storage do's and don'ts, and socializing a bit. I value friendly socializing in business just as much as in my personal life. That way, everyone can seem like a friend. Garret, Lynn's husband, is also a friendly, sincere man. Always offering to help with something regarding my units or potential problems. Speaking of one small problem, I carelessly left some scented candles in an open box in one of my storage units, and also, a couple boxes of breakfast cereal inside sealed moving boxes. Lynn asked me more than once to not leave any food---whatsoever---in my units. Well, a few months later, I get a call from Lynn telling me I need to check out a terrible smell coming from my second storage unit. When I did, I found a dead squirrel and tons of mouse poop all over. It seems squirrels, mice, and rats love to eat scented candle wax. All my candles were chewed up. I think the squirrel died from the wax buildup and impaction in his gut. The critters also found the cereal after chewing through boxes within boxes to get at it---just like Lynn warned about. Lynn and Garret were very understanding and offered gloves and bags for me to use for cleanup and to dispose of any resulting damaged goods I needed to put into their dumpster. Never once did they say, "I told you so," only supportive words and encouragement. Bay Area Self Storage in San Mateo is modern, gated, alarmed, camera'ed, supervised, and convenient. The gate and elevators are passcode protected, and your passcode will only work for the floor your unit is located on. This is definitely a 5 star facility and outfit! Review 0170 Feel.

    Staff is great. The place is very clean and well organized. Like all storage units, it seems we pay a lot, but this place is worth it.

    The worst movers I have ever used I have moved several times…read morein my 68 years, and my experience moving from California to Texas with NorthStar was the worst I have ever had with a mover. My framed artwork (two posters, a batik from Indonesia, and a lithograph) completely disappeared once the packers in Berkeley took it. When the boxes arrived, some of them were smashed in and it was clear they had not handled my goods with care. Multiple items were damaged. Administratively, they were equally awful. I asked them to provide all written terms and conditions upfront before I signed and put down my deposit, and they assured me they done this, but at the last minute, when I obviously couldn't hire another mover, they insisted that I sign additional terms that were very one-sided in their favor. (I did not sign these and made notes on the document regarding the duress they were putting me under.) For the document authorizing the final credit card payment, they tried slipping in a provision saying that I authorized them to make any other charges they wanted. (I removed that language, but it was a pretty sleazy trick to try to pull.) Then, when they delivered my goods (minus the artwork), the driver insisted that I sign a document saying I had received everything, which was clearly false. When I explained this, he threatened to take all of my goods back if I did not sign. (Again, I did not sign, but made notes regarding why on the paperwork.) I would never use this company again.

    NorthStar did our last 3 moves and we would recommend them to anyone…read more Our recent move was the smoothest yet! Felipe and his team (Noel, Henry and George) arrived on time and ready to go. They're professional, fast, friendly and took great care with all our belongings. What really impressed us was the speed at which they worked and how well our furniture (and other items not in boxes) were padded and wrapped so securely. The unload went just as smoothly and at each location, not a speck of packing material (they brought tape, wrap and other supplies) was left behind. Amazing! Thank you Felipe and crew for taking such good care of us and being so efficient. We also appreciate the kindness and positive attitudes and smiles despite how hard the work is!! Best move yet!!

    I recommend this place if you're not traveling too far. The rental per day is super economical but…read morethe price per mile is ridiculous ($1.19 per mile). If you've got a long way to drive your better off going to Monarch or Penske. Patience is very important here. Everything moves slowly. It'll take some time for them to get to you and then when it's is finally time for you to rent a vehicle it's a slow grind. Once you are out the door though things are great. Service was great, they're polite and helpful and the vehicle was a breeze to drive. I'll definitely be back.

    Whoever the young woman that worked with Amaya on Sunday, June 14th around 4pm needs to learn…read morecustomer service. Amaya was originally helping us and she was great throughout the entire time. When it came time to pay, we saw that we were rung up for over $140 than what we were quoted for. When we asked about this, that's when this other girl stepped in. My dad made the reservation for the truck, wrote down all of the information of what he was told, but unfortunately didn't get the guy's name that he spoke with nor got a confirmation email with the information. We completely understand that we should've asked for a confirmation with that info other than just the reservation number. However, ALL CALLS ARE RECORDED. So we weren't pulling this info from our asses like we were accused. The girl in question asked us who we spoke to, told her we didn't get the name, and asked her if she could reference the calls that were recorded. She said she doesn't have access to those recordings and that only her manager does but he wasn't there. I simply asked her to call her manager. She pretended to call her manager and then said he wasn't answering. I told her that I'm a manager at my job and know that if my employees call me, it's my job to pick up or call back within a timely manner. She smirked at me when I told her that. And I followed by telling her that it's not like we would randomly pull a number from our asses, and she said "well this is our rate if you pick it up on a Sunday vs a Monday morning." And I told her that I would understand that if we were picking it up in the morning by 30 mins before they close & it's over $140 more than what we were quoted? That also wasn't communicated to us, and if it was then we would've picked it up on Monday morning. I asked her again to call her manager or try to access the recording. She simply stopped talking to us and then just rang us up for the original price we were quoted for. Yes, ultimately, we got what we were told but she didn't need to make it that hard nor had to be that rude and unwilling to help.
