I was fortunate enough to have my brother and mother inspect and shop around at other self storage sites before choosing Bay Area Self Storage in San Mateo for me . . . and they know I am very picky. In my downsizing and move from my Sonoma County home after twenty-five years of living there, I needed a decent size storage unit for my belongings. After verbally describing my requirements, my family promptly rented a unit for me and my brother helped me move my things. At first, my downsizing was to move into a beautiful smaller cottage in the town of Muir Beach in Marin County. I only needed a percentage of my things to live there. But, just after a few months, my aging mother needed additional caregiver assistance and the timing was right for me to do that for her. So, I rented a second storage unit for my remaining things at Bay Area Self Storage, from Lynn and Garret Stark, the resident managers. I was given one-month's free rent because of the first storage unit I had there. Lynn and Garret also gave me a heavy-duty round padlock for free. That was a very nice touch. Lynn was helpful, informative, and kind from the very beginning with the new paperwork, storage do's and don'ts, and socializing a bit. I value friendly socializing in business just as much as in my personal life. That way, everyone can seem like a friend. Garret, Lynn's husband, is also a friendly, sincere man. Always offering to help with something regarding my units or potential problems. Speaking of one small problem, I carelessly left some scented candles in an open box in one of my storage units, and also, a couple boxes of breakfast cereal inside sealed moving boxes. Lynn asked me more than once to not leave any food---whatsoever---in my units. Well, a few months later, I get a call from Lynn telling me I need to check out a terrible smell coming from my second storage unit. When I did, I found a dead squirrel and tons of mouse poop all over. It seems squirrels, mice, and rats love to eat scented candle wax. All my candles were chewed up. I think the squirrel died from the wax buildup and impaction in his gut. The critters also found the cereal after chewing through boxes within boxes to get at it---just like Lynn warned about. Lynn and Garret were very understanding and offered gloves and bags for me to use for cleanup and to dispose of any resulting damaged goods I needed to put into their dumpster. Never once did they say, "I told you so," only supportive words and encouragement. Bay Area Self Storage in San Mateo is modern, gated, alarmed, camera'ed, supervised, and convenient. The gate and elevators are passcode protected, and your passcode will only work for the floor your unit is located on. This is definitely a 5 star facility and outfit! Review 0170 Feel. read more

I'm new to the whole "storage thing". lol, so that being said I'm not sure how valid my review is. Pro's: They have a moving van, for free, you simply use your credit card (or cash or something) to place $500 deposit and pay for gas and you can use it anywhere in the immediate area to move. This alone saved me probably $75++ from UHAUL. They gave me a reduced rate since I contracted for a year + They have a clean, gated, facility They are nice and friendly people They have little carts on wheels to help a girl move her stuff! They never charged me a late fee for forgetting to pay like an idiot - instead they called me and kindly asked for cc info over the phone and then mailed me the cc form so ongoing I wouldn't have the issue... problem solved. Con's: The in n out is not always super easy BUT I probably couldve chosen a outside locker which would have made it tenfold easier. So I guess it's more of a self-con. lol. read more

Terrible place for storage. I signed up in November 2021 and I the paperwork was not done right. I put everything inside and could not access the gate for over two weeks. I kept asking why. The lady checked and said I was assigned a unit at another building. She had to do the paperwork again. I asked for compensation and never got it. The manager there said they were preparing for an auction and they had a lady that had 5 units and were dealing with her. Maybe that's why my paperwork was wrong. I have asked to speak with a regional manager. No phone number was ever given. Only a name of Shirley. Then I got a late later sent to my contact who had no clue that I had a storage. What a terrible place. Don't rent here. When I finally got access the alarm would sound the whole time and a dog would start barking. Horrible service. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I was in the military and have moved a lot. I have been through good moves and bad and some of the people you deal with on the way can make a huge difference. Overall, I would give them 3.5 stars. Once you are all set up and in a storage unit, I would even say 5 stars. Jai, the district manager is a great guy and will totally bend over backwards to help you out. Why 3.5 stars then? I think they are a victim of their own success. They have taken to this 24/7 answering service that can't seem to get their act straight. When we figured out we were moving, we called to reserve a storage unit. We spoke with a woman, gave our credit card info to hold a unit on the first floor, got a confirmation number and everything. When we arrived in person to sign the paperwork and drop off our first few items, there was nothing but complete chaos. They had already rented the unit(s) they had available on the first floor, the local office didn't have our reservation, and who knew who I gave my credit card info to? Jai did everything in his power to make things right by us. He got the manager of the answering service on the phone while we were there, and we got things straightened out. He still didn't have a unit on the first floor for us, but he still did what he could to make it up to us. The whole facility is clean, and secure. You need a code to get into the place in general and also into the elevator to get to upper levels. The facility has lots of high tech monitoring gear, cams and a manager that actually lives onsite. They also have a truck that you can use for local moves (naturally, moving into their facility only). Overall, it was a great experience and if I had to do it again, I would use them for storage. Just make sure you talk to someone at the *local* office and not their answering service. read more

Best storage experience I've ever had. Helen made the rental process fast and painless. Even had a free 16' rental truck for me to move my stuff out of dirty Public Storage. The place is gated, super clean, and each unit has an alarm. Doesn't get any better than this. read more

Lynn made me feel right at home when I visited the office for a quote. It was immediately apparent that she was on top of things at the site, and showed me some available storage units just by memory. She explained that they do unit checks multiple times a day, and I observed she recognized every car that was there at the time and which customer it belonged to. This impressed me because it was clear she took the time to get to know the customers both as a friendly gesture and also so she'd be aware of visitors she didn't recognize. That's a security measure thats as effective as cameras and alarms (which the site also has). Each unit has its own separate alarm which is great. I also met her husband Garrett who was cleaning units when I arrived. Garrett was as friendly as Lynn and it was cool to learn we had a shared hobby in common. Lynn and Garrett run a tight ship and keep the facility safe and clean. Those were the 2 most important things to me when I was shopping for a storage unit. Highly recommended. read more

This was my first experience with a self storage. I looked at many in the area. Most were a little dirty and dark and frankly, creepy! Driving into Bay Area Self Storage was like a fresh breath. Lynn and Garret Stark run the business and live on the property. They are really wonderful. Helpful, knowledgeable, personable and take amazing care of the property. Lynn runs the office and Garret takes care of maintaining the units and property. There is a truck you may be able to use moving in....that was invaluable. We moved in one trip. They helped with the right size....that was great. The buildings themselves are all monitored with cameras at all times, the units are alarmed, the property is safe and secure. Moving in, there was a Girl Scout troop storing their goods! The elevators are large and pretty much indestructible! You always need a code to get into the elevator (double security). The air inside is cool and fresh...there is never an "odor" as most places had. There are carts available, so it is very easy to move in, even if you are on the 2nd or 3rd floor. If I ever have to do this again, I would never think of anywhere but Bay Area and I would hope Lynn and Garret would still be there! read more

This is my first non-restaurant review, and I've only done one of those. Lynn and Garret are really wonderful people and made my stressful move a much easier experience!! They are so helpful and friendly, and seem to genuinely take pride in the work they do and being there for people. I would normally dread going to the storage unit that reminds me I have too many things and need to purge, but I know that I'll see one or both of them there so I don't mind going! The facility is very clean and I know I wouldn't feel as good about keeping my things anywhere else. :) read more

I have two storage units here, one for almost 2 years. The place is always clean and the carts are always available. They even have a moving truck available to use for moving. Lynn is nice and gets you set up quickly to move your stuff in. No complaints. read more

I've been renting here since November of 2010..sometimes only one unit...sometimes more. This is not the cheapest storage place...but it isn't the most expensive either. It is very well run, extremely clean,..and the managers do pay attention to who comes and goes, and try to establish relationships with customers. They have been incredibly accommodating to my last minute requests for extra space, and have gone out of their way to be nice to me...and I'm a bit high maintenance regarding the storage of all the "stuff" my husband has. This is a very safe place for storage, and I like knowing that someone is personally looking out for me...very personable people running this place. If you've ever rented space elsewhere, you will figure out pretty quickly that this particular location offers a whole different level of service and professionalism. read more

Horrible horrible customer service for packaging materials!!! Buyer beware. Purchased a bunch of boxes out of desperation for a project. Called ahead of time and spoke with Lynn to see if these were blank, ie: no writing on them. Stuck in traffic for an hour to find out they WEREN'T BLANK when I got there. Purchased them anyway to try to salvage the project. Didn't end up using them, and tried to return with my receipt. They're still perfectly brand new. NO WHERE ON THE RECEIPT DOES IT SAY FINAL SALE NOR WAS I INFORMED THIS UPON PURCHASE!!! Treated me like garbage when I tried to return, like I'm the crazy one, not them. Then refused to give me the corporate number, I had to call the Redwood City location to get that information. The guy Chris, was super nice. Thanks Chris! At least you know how to treat people. Too bad that Lynn and her rude trainee can't learn from you. Sad because I rent storage facilities for my business and I could have been a repeat customer if they had human decency. I left the boxes there as a donation to some nice customer who walks in the door. I feel bad for them already having to deal with these people. read more

Can't say enough about how impressed I am with the facility and the service. Lynn and Garret are great and they really give you peace of mind that your items are being stored in a safe & clean environment...under their watchful eye. I had visited 3 other places before I settled on Bay Area SS and at each of those other 3 places I felt gross about putting my stuff in storage. Bay Area SS was a no brainer as soon as I walked through it. The place is clean. I believe the rates are competitive. Niels comments written on 12/5/2010 hit the mark on how gross some places are. This place is nice and I'm hooked. You just gotta see it for yourself. If you're looking for a storage unit - you really should check out Bay Area SS with Lynn & Garret. The site is always super clean and there is never a piece of trash anywhere. Having been a customer of another storage facility (with the initials of P.S.) in the past, when it came time for me to move about 8 months ago, after being in the same home for over 12 years, I was totally dreading the experience of having to place a large portion of my personal belongings in storage once again. This time around I decided to do some serious homework and literally spent nearly a solid week calling every storage facility in the Bay Area, including the Pod companies that will deliver their storage units to your home and finally narrowed my search down to Bay Area Self Storage of San Mateo. I based my final decision on a number of factors from the monthly rental rate, to the fact that they had air conditioned and climate controlled units, their facility was relatively new, and after having visited the premises in person to see the units they had available I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the facility, as well as the number of video cameras and security measures that they utilize 24/7. Even their restroom for those who rent at the facility is nicely decorated and well maintained. They also have drink vending machines which I've not seen at other facilities before and which comes in very handy during those long, hot, dusty days of moving. Since becoming a customer of B.A.S.S. of S.M. I've come to discover what I think has been one of the greatest assets of this facility and that's the bonus of having made two new "friends" with the on-site managers Lynn & Garret. They have not only been extremely friendly and kind, but incredibly helpful as well. Lynn is very sharp and full of wonderfully, creative suggestions. When I'd asked if they happened to sell any type of plastic covers to place over a rolling clothing rack, which I was storing in my unit fully loaded with clothing, she'd informed me that they did not but suggested that I try one of their thick mattress or box spring plastic covers which had an opening down one side. They then loaned me a tape measure so I could take some measurements and I then made the appropriate purchase. As it turned out the mattress cover worked like a charm and fits like a glove. The opening turned out to be just perfect for me to access my winter clothing as the whether changed. Lynn's husband Garret can almost always be found out-and-about on the premises during business hours as he's always busy cleaning or maintaining the grounds. Since I'm a woman of short stature (5'2") I had a bit of a difficult time reaching the pull-rope to close my unit door so Garret was kind enough to add an additional length of rope to make it much easier for me. On a few other occasions while I was still in the process of moving into my unit, if Garret happened to be making his rounds and was in the vicinity of my outside unit he would always make a point of saying "Hello," as he does with all of their customers. On occasion he would even offer suggestions as to how I might pack something in my unit a little differently in order to maximize the space with I found extremely helpful since I ended up utilizing every square inch of my unit. I'm pretty impressed by the fact that I almost always hear them great people by name, and those customers generally know their names as well. They really are both a friendly and helpful couple who take great pride in their work. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact I was quite proud of my choice in renting from B.A.S.S. of S.M. when 2 of my 4 friends that I had helping me move with my large and heavy items on a couple of different days both commented on what an outstanding facility it appeared to be in comparison to the places that they were (and have) rented from in the past. The last major bonus for me out of this whole deal has turned out to be the location of the facility which is only 5 miles from my new home, which makes it extremely convenient and affords me the opportunity to retrieve and return things to my unit quite easily. I truly couldn't be any happier with the choice I've made this time around with the place I've chosen to store my worldly possessions. These folks are so totally nice and the property is well maintained and secure. I would definitely refer them to others. Only downside is that the restroom closes at around 5-5:30 so for those of us who need to go and are there up until closing at 9pm, it can get uncomfortable. This place has the worst customer service ever!!! I stored here about a year ago and the managers then were first rate but the have seemed to move on and so did their great service!! The lady there wouldn't get off the phone to speak with me and just ignored me. She finally got off the phone but didn't act like she wanted to rent to me. I guess it was break time.
