This is a reply to the company's suggestion, posted as a response to my initial Yelp review, that I contact their claims department about the damage to my goods. After I submitted complete photos and a written description of the damage and my experience with the movers to the claims department, they stopped responding to my email inquiries. I had to dispute a portion of the credit card charge through my bank in order to be reimbursed for a portion of the damage. So my review stands unchanged at one star. read more

Northstar movers broke most of the items they transported for us across country. The only explanation for this amount of damage is that it was done intentionally, or through gross misconduct. Items that were fully wrapped when they left our home, arrived unwrapped and scratched. Fragile boxes were smashed. Every single piece of furniture we own was dented, as if another piece of heavy furniture fell on it. So many things were damaged, we found ourselves saying "How did this even happen?" We were bullied to refuse insurance, and told that our move would be rescheduled to an unknown date. We had flights scheduled and people moving into our home and could not postpone. Do not make the same mistake we did! Get full insurance coverage through Northstar (if you choose to use them, which I HIGHLY recommend you don't). We were again bullied to pay in full even though our items were completely destroyed, and Northstar offered us a total of $218 for $20K of damages! The COO who handled our case acted as if she had no personal role in this, and seemed insulted that we wouldn't just let it go. She didn't follow through with any significant compensation after stringing us along for three months, and showed little remorse. They even had their attorney write us a letter confirming that they don't owe us additional funds, even though this was clearly a catastrophe. I feel sad that we had such a horrible experience with our move. We have two young children, and the amount of stress we experienced, plus the inability to replace our stuff due to financial stress is really upsetting. These photos are just a small sample of over 50 items which were destroyed in Northstar's care. I assume the company will respond, discrediting me as they have done others on Yelp. I really have no reason to make these claims other than to try and help others have a better experience than we did by choosing a different company to entrust your belongings with. UPDATE: Northstar, your comment below is false. You are not investigating or offering me anything more than $218, after destroying all of my belongings. NorthStar did our last 3 moves and we would recommend them to anyone. Our recent move was the smoothest yet! Felipe and his team (Noel, Henry and George) arrived on time and ready to go. They're professional, fast, friendly and took great care with all our belongings. Their communication was perfect, calling to confirm the appointment, their ETA the day of, and after the move had been completed. Additionally, everyone wore masks. Juan, Tacho, and Jose came with a truck more than big enough to house all our belongings, and checked in with us during different points for certain items (some items stayed, most went). After being at my current place for less than 6 months I'm in need of a move again. Reached out to NorthStar again to see if they offered storage this time as my new place wasn't going to be ready for a month and they do. There was a bit of the mix up in my contract versus what they told me on the phone but NorthStar was quick to correct any errors and really responsive. The same gentleman Edgar who completed my first move showed up for this move again :). Since I have a roommate I made sure to lay out anything from the kitchen that belonged to me on the kitchen table this way only my stuff would get packed. The guys showed up and brought boxes and packed everything for me. Didn't have to do much besides literally lift a finger and point to things that needed to be moved or stayed. Oversized items were carefully wrapped with blankets and tape and hauled down to the car. Items were marked with a numbered sticker and inventoried so I'll know what to expect when it was re-delivered. Happy to business with these guys again. Revelation: you do not need to own a truck to own nice (big) things! The biggest obstacles for me over the years in appointing my house with beautiful furniture have been 1. I did not have my own house until now. 2. I have terrible taste in interior design. 3. If I found something I liked that wasn't brand new, I had no way of transporting it. Why did I not think of hiring a professional moving company before, you say? Because "movers" makes me think of whole apartments and trucks going cross country. But no! You can hire movers for something heavy that needs moving in your own city. I bought a second-hand bed frame and mattress (hello, King Size Upward Mobility!) and hired NorthStar to pick up the bed and bring it to my place. Included in the price was the rearrangement of heavy couches and things already in my house, and all done swiftly and straightforwardly. They would have done the whole thing in an hour if the guy selling on the other end hadn't asked them to move a few of his heavy boxes while they were there...and even still, I paid for 1.5 hours: not a minute more than needed. They guaranteed to not go over $250 for the job, and it came out to about $120. What an amazing price to pay for not pulling a single muscle in my back. I was told they'd send two guys, but they sent three (bonus!) with Edgar as the point person. Double bonus? They actually ASSEMBLED the bed frame for me, drill-at-the-ready. Something I hadn't even thought about or expected when buying the frame. So again, the benefit of hiring a professional like the folks at Northstar is that you're not just stranded with a bungee cord and an open trunk, going 2 miles an hour on the highway with your emergency blinkers on, after a brief meeting with someone on Craigslist who just wants you to take your crap and skidaddle. When you call to make the appointment, they'll put you on hold to talk to the dispatcher about the time you request. They have an automated recording that says "why trust your belongings with some guy who just borrowed his uncle's truck?" There you have it. No other reason needed. Money can't buy you happiness, but if you're moving, a small amount of money here will make your life so much easier. read more

Good communications. - took their time to pack right! I bought insurance for TV and monitors after hearing some scary stories from other people, but our LG OLED TV and all the monitors were unharmed. One of the guys unpacking said, "they packed as if you were moving to another planet." - meticulous documentation. They wrote every item and put a numbered sticker on each packed item that I was able to check them off when receiving them. Every one of them arrived in perfect condition. - affordable. I got a quote 4-5times higher than from NS by some other company. I worried about the quality of the service because the NS estimate was comparable to PODs, but I believe it was a definitely better experience than PODs. I recently used Northstar to move from Foster City to San Francisco and can say that without a doubt, these were the best movers Ive ever used. First, getting the estimate and move scheduled was a breeze and I was given a detailed description of what to expect. When I had follow up questions to some of the emails I received, both Beatriz and Michael were helpful and professional. I had such a bad experience with the last moving company (which shall not be named), that Michael had to touch base with me several times just to reassure me that they would exceed my expectations, and they did! Day of move they called me at the designated check in time, and the truck and movers arrived ready to go. After some quick paperwork the team of 3 (Carlos, Felipe, and Anselmo) worked diligently to load the truck and coordinate with my wife and I, and just flat out get things done. They then loaded the truck carefully with a townhome worth of stuff in ~2.5 hrs! The entire move was done in 5.5 hrs with the double time for driving (CA law by the way). I wasn't ecstatic about the up charge in supplies (60 for tape and a couple of boxes), but other than that these guys were awesome! I would highly recommend them to anyone that needs to move and wants things done right the first time(so everyone). I will be using them exclusively to move going forward. Scheduled a move a week in advance. Originally gave me an afternoon time slot (not ideal for me) but the day before, called me to ask if I'd like a mornin slot instead. This worked out much better. The move itself was handled well. The workers were efficient in figuring out what needed to be done, and were finished in less than 3 hours. If I could write a zero star review I would. These were hands down the worst movers I've ever had to work with. I have moved 13 times in the past 15 years so I have plenty of experience working with moving companies. Where to begin... I'm 7 months pregnant so my husband and I needed extra help with this move. Had requested for packing, moving, and unpacking services. We were moving from a 2 bedroom house into another 2 bedroom home and honestly don't own that much nor were there any stairs for them to worry about in either home. It took 4 men over 4 hours just to load up our things (this is after we had done most of the packing up ourselves). They proceeded to take a 1.5 hour lunch break then returned wreaking of smoke. They were so slow to unload the truck again that we didn't even want to continue paying them hourly to unload the boxes. Also, these guys must have some type of side hustle because they made us pay for the materials they used separately from the actual move. We were charged $300 in PACKING PAPER! When I then had to spend the following week unpacking all of the boxes, half of them were filled with stacks of paper within the boxes that weren't even being used to wrap/protect anything. Talk about feeling scammed/taken advantage of. Not to mention all of the boxes were mislabeled, placed in the wrong rooms and honestly I still don't know where half my possessions are. And marked me as -unable to service. Seems like the right response is; 'we don't hire out experienced labor' instead of small moves. I used NorthStar moving for my recent move from CA to NYC. I had very positive experiences with the cost estimator and all the customer service folks. A crew of 5 people came to pick up my stuff in CA, and everyone was professional, thorough, and careful. My possessions made it to NY in 10 days, which was amazing. However, the team (of only 2 people!) that dropped off my stuff was highly unprofessional - they refused to wear masks, damaged some of my plastic bins and an expensive bookshelf while unloading the van, and picked fights with my new neighbors for no reason. When I provided this feedback to NorthStar, the COO personally called me back to discuss my situation. She was extremely empathetic and genuinely wanted to hear details of my negative interaction with the NY crew. She immediately provided a small refund on my move, and said she will use my feedback for future improvements. No one likes moving, and a great moving company can make the experience less painful. It was so easy to work with NorthStar Moving from start to finish. I highly recommend them and would definitely use them again. Great customer service, professional and respectful movers, and constant communication. I requested a quote from multiple movers, and NorthStar replied via Yelp quickly. NorthStar's rates are more competitive than other movers. I had a question so I called, and someone picked up the phone immediately. I didn't have to punch in a few numbers to get connected to a person. The person was helpful and I booked NorthStar. An agreement was emailed to me immediately after I hung up, and I confirmed via email. On moving day, the movers called me to give me their ETA. Unfortunately there were a few accidents, so they texted me to give me an updated ETA. I realize things come up and appreciated the update. They still arrived within the window. The movers were professional and helpful. They brought materials and supplies. They wrapped up the furniture in blankets. They worked quickly loading and unloading. They asked us where boxes should be unloaded instead of just dumping then in the garage or random rooms. Nothing was damaged during the move. I used these guys before in my last move so I decided to use them again. Overall, the move was fine but there was one guy on the team that was clearly new or something. he kept hitting walls when dropping off items at the destination location. He also didn't bother reading the labels on the boxes telling them where to put it so i spent extra time moving boxes up and down stairs just because he didn't want to read it. Hell, I know spanish, i could have written it in spanish if that would have helped. overall, i'd say the experience was not as smooth as the previous. Best move experience ever! Marlon and his team came on-site on time and ready! The team was courteous and very professional. We were barely packed but they have a good system. Everyone seemed to be on the same page and we received several phone calls the week before to check in -care. All of our things were intact when they arrived -timeliness. They respected our time and were never late Improvements: -there were a few boxes left upstairs that we had to get ourselves and take in the car. They were efficient, dealt with packing up some residual loose stuff in our closets that we hadn't gotten to, and went above and beyond to help us with some things that movers don't usually do. They jammed right over to the new spot after our relatively long loading process (again, we had too many little loose things), and worked hard to unload the truck and get us moved in quickly and carefully. Haithem and Carlos and Juan were punctual and had all the tools and supplies they needed to move me from San Francisco to the South Bay Area. Hiring movers is a godsend and they make everything run smoothly. There was one piece (a kinda cheap bookcase from target) that broke in the move but I blame that on the quality of the furniture more than the movers. Just maybe give them notice of anything important that you want to have extra care. There were also some dents on the corners of my bookcase (which is white) with black scratches. So that's kinda a bummer. Other movers I've had have included the blanket wrapping in the cost and are more careful to have everything in prime condition when you arrive. Bottom line, though, for any moving company, have your place as organized as possible to make the move quick (which costs less obviously) and know what directions you want to provide at the beginning and end of the trip. If you have anything that you really care about staying in mint condition, I guess pay extra for the blankets, or put blankets around them yourself? Seems like this could be improved with NorthStar Moving. But overall, pleasant experience. read more

It's been a week since this company looked at the contents of my small home to estimate it. I have called them about a dozen times to receive the estimate that was due days ago. I have not received it yet. The estimator keeps saying he will get it to me. I'm extremely disappointed. And wow, two days later, the whole story deteriorated. I got a new and friendly estimator over the phone. I was generously offered a 20% discount for my troubles by the CEO. Great! I received a solid and quick estimate in a matter of hours. The only snag was, he was having difficulty getting the movers to agree to let me stay in the home overnight after packing so that I could sleep in my bed with my aging cat. (The original estimator had said that could be done.). So, the COO, not CEO, calls me to explain why it's not possible. But she's never worked that job in this area of CA, so I'm explaining how this could work without overworking the drivers. I kept telling her I needed the specifics around hours planned, etc. I also mentioned the helpful estimator was planning to get back to me with a solution. She suddenly yelled: YOU'RE NOT GETTING A CALL FROM HIM. IT HAS BEEN TURNED OVER TO ME. AND YOU'RE NOT GOING BEHIND MY BACK TO SOMEONE MORE JUNIOR. I HAVE BEEN IN THIS JOB FOR 15 YEARS. And on and on like that. Making it ALL about her and not working with me on a solution. This is after the head of the company told me the day before that they wanted to make it right!! Wow. I reached out via yelp and since we were repeat customers they offered us a sizable discount even on busy/booked days! Nelson contacted me the night before confirming the appointment. Arrived on time at 8:20 and they were out of my new apartment within three hours. This was a 2 bedroom move from sunset to SOMA. They protect your mattress/furniture with saran wrap/blankets. And they have plenty of wardrobe closets so you don't have to worry about packing your clothes The best part about getting movers is not having to assemble and reassemble your ikea furniture and these guys were a pro!
