BAY HOME AND LINENS on B Street in San Mateo is small store of home decor, linens, tableware, select wool, cashmere and alpaca sweaters and accessories, tucked away in a block across from the now closed Draegers. Greeted and warmly welcomed in by Lina. I happily and luckily browsed during one of their sales. I sat lucky because oohing and aaahing over their cashmere and alpaca sweaters and cardigans, my eyes felt to a table piled high with soft cashmere scarves! I immediately picked it up and couldn't believe the plushness and softness of the scarf! This scarf could easily run $600+, at Neiman Marcus, or more, if it was from Loro Piana. Definitely going home with me! I also saw a Pendleton sweater, appropriate for the cold weather. Lina said they also carry the famous Pendleton wool blankets but they had not arrived as yet. I'll look forward to the Pendleton blankets. Among the small selection of mostly Japanese tableware I spied a blue & white square porcelain jar that seemed to be missing a top. I kept going back to it and finally added that to my purchases. It kept calling to me. It could be used as a writing instrument or brush holder, or Even as a small vase yo fill with some bright posies to brighten a tabletop or desk. BHL also had a nice selection of plush, thick, warm bathrobes, along side the select bed linens. This store is a place where you might find an interesting and eclectic piece to complete your bedroom, table top or living space. Perhaps completing the tableau. I will definitely make BAY HOME AND LINENS a regular stop to check out their near, little treasures. See there! read more

Don't be fooled by the name - Bay Home & Linens is so much more! It stocks a tasteful and eclectic combination of clothing, small gifts, handbags as well as linens. Most wonderfully, many items are produced by local crafts people. I just bought a terrific blouse, hand made by a woman in the East Bay. Beautiful design, impeccably crafted, quality fabric. The owner, Lina, is delightful and the prices are very reasonable. Downtown San Mateo has an abundance of eateries but not nearly enough retail. Bay Home is an important contributor and a pleasure to support. Location on B Street is right across from Draegers. Go there! read more

I learned of this store when it was closing and saw the old store front today. Imagine my surprise when I found them at a new location (405 B Street), right down the street from their old site. The store holds an eclectic mixture of household linens, jewelry, and gift items, many of which are made by local artists. The shop owner is a lovely lady who will give you the background of the artisans who make the items she sells. I was looking for a birthday gift and was pleased to find something nice. Conviently located across the street from Draeger's, I highly recommend the shop as a place to find inexpensive and unique items. read more

This little store in downtown San Mateo had incredibly friendly and informative service! Apparently many local artists sell their wares here, and the gorgeous quilts in the window are locally made! Many of the items are brought in from other countries by travelers who purchase items to sell in the shop, and the soy candles are made by hand by yet another local artist! I loved this little space and the magnificent amount of items they sell here but haven't yet had the chance to come back. Not much of a Linen person so I almost didn't bother to stop in this gem of a shop. But the quilts displayed caught my eye, and since I had a little bit of time left on my meter, I popped in. I was warmly greeted by the owner, Lina. She explained that all the quilts were handmade by an artist in Santa Monica. If you've read any of my reviews, you'll know I am a sucker for locally made items (I know, Santa Monica isn't local, local but it's close enough) Turns out, a lot of their stuff is designed by local residents and an intern from the art school designed their logo and hang tags. Although I was very tempted, I didn't end up buying a quilt. But I did get a cashmere throw and poncho. Yeah, I said poncho - whatevs! I found their prices to be reasonable for a boutique. The style is a bit all over the place....Italian pottery, antique Asian pieces, cashmere throws from Nepal, quilts from Santa Monica....but that's OK because there's something for everyone and it's just fun to talk to a shopkeeper who is passionate. read more

Surprised that this great little store has so few reviews! If you're downtown, and seeking a unique (but affordable) gift for someone, this store is a great place to stop in. Cute little trinkets (small bowls, candle holders, jewelry, cell phone covers, jewelry stands, soap, handbags...) that will put a smile on the recipient's face. Robes, PJs, stuffed animals... Anything to make bedtime a little more cozy. And, as the name implies, some reall nice linens. Beautiful comforters, reasonably priced sheet sets, stylish throw pillows... You'll have a chic bedroom in no time. They try to source items from local designers, which is nice too. I finally made it in here once and for all. I usually pass by after hours and look in the windows. I love this place- they have great comforters and bed sets. They also have a lot of different kinds of decorative pillows, and neat huge floor pillows. Upstairs they have Chinese lamps and end tables- some of the end tables have Chinese poems written in them. The prices here were unbelievable, and the quality of the items were excellent. The cool part about the store was the lady who helped my friend and I. Her name is Lina, and she was very helpful, and very informative about all of the merchandise, and I wanted to buy everything I loved in there because of her ( and this usually does not happen.) My friend got a cool handmade bed set, and we both walked out of there with one of a kind home made glass pendant necklaces. GO HERE and support your local businesses! The prices for the items here were so much better than what you can get at those chain linen and home stores. read more

Unexpectedly Found this sweet little store near the San Mateo Caltrain Station. Since they had Sale signs on the door, I proceeded timidly inside. Lina was there and guided me through the beautiful and unusual items available. There were so many things that caught my eye. I walked out happy and grateful for my totally awesome purchases. My favorite was the gorgeous Chinese porcelain bowl which is now sitting on my coffee table. There was no pressure to buy anything. I'll be back. read more

I love Bay Home and Linens! This is such a fun place to spend an hour looking at all of the unique, local artist-inspired items. The prices are reasonable and Lina, the proprietress, is amazingly helpful and charming. I have purchased about a dozen things over the past couple of years including earrings, candles, 2 sweaters, cards, a darling vintage wastebasket, pottery, etc. Their bedding is beautiful, and I am tempted to purchase one of their beautiful comforters. This is a small boutique located in the heart of down town San Mateo. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the store has things from all over the world! And also many locally made items, like candles, creams etc. I just stopped by to look and never mind the luxurious linens and washable tablecloth from France, I got me a Dosen Roses natural soy candle made here in California! The aroma is no nice I have not reached home to use it yet, but I have been opening it up and putting it up my nose I love the scent! After doing a google search for this specific quilt, I came across it here on Bay Home and Linens website. I was weary and reviewed the company's shipping policies (will ship in 2 business days). I felt comfortable ordering from them since I needed the product by a specific date. After 5 business days, I heard nothing! I called and found out that there was a delay in their warehouse. The woman I spoke with told me they would ship it out priority. The next week I received an email that it had been shipped (standard post). I paid $20 for shipping (their flat rate) to get the product too late. The company was unwilling to refund me any amount of money. Do not order online! read more

I like this store, it has a number of gift items that you don't see everywhere, and if you do, they cost more elsewhere. I also like the lady there, I believe the Asian lady is the owner. She is very pleasant she will ask if she can help you but she doesn't make you feel like you are being followed or pressure you to buy. You want to shop and get ripped off. This may look like a unique shop but the have fallen terribly. They do not stand behind there merchandise and they have kept my merchandise and my money $400.00. There comforters fall apart. The people writing these review must be getting paid to do so. I have been a customer for 8 years and will never return again. This is a cute little gem in downtown San Mateo. The shop is small and unassuming but once you step inside, it's filled with adorable and well-priced knickknacks. The owner is a sweet little Chinese lady who knows her products well. I fell in love with the jewelry dolls which are made by a retired costume designer. Passing by the store numerous times. Always attracted by the beautiful arrangement, but was too scared to go inside thinking the stuff would be pricey. Finally went in one time, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and the excellent value it provides. The lady working at the store was so nice explaining things to me, but never pressured me into buying (although I did walk out some a beautiful handmade purse and hand made jewelry). It is a rare boutique shop that really excites and stroke your senses. It is a beautiful store that you would expect in provincetown at the tip of cape cod, or a European city like, say, Serville. Everything is so gentle and delicate, vibrant and intense, soft and warm or combinations of these. And contrary to the running practice in Bay Area, they don't charge an arm and a leg. The owner told me that they want to make this a real neighborhood store that people come over and over again. I am certainly one of them! Window shopping along B Street in San Mateo turned into a pleasant surprise when the window of Bay Home and Linens caught my eye. I never expected to find beautiful quality merchandise from bed linens, pillows, lamps , table runners, ceramics, and novelty items at such reasonable prices. I purchased a strand of large brightly colored butterflies for my ill sister-in-law who hung from the ceiling over her bed. She was so grateful for the unique and comforting gift. In addition, I purchased two brightly painted ceramic pieces, an egg dish and butter dish both made in Poland, which I have totally enjoyed due to the colorful design. The sales person was a delight. She was helpful, and knowledgeable and, most importantly, not pushy, which many small shop owners can be. I can't wait to go back to look for a bed cover.
