Disclaimer: Indian Zayka was a favorite haunt of mine. The owners provided outstanding customer service that created strong customer loyalty in the south metro compared to other competing establishments in the area. So, when I heard they would be selling their business I was disappointed. However, Bay Leaf has stepped in and, although it's early days yet, will seemingly carry the baton of reasonably priced and tasty Indian cuisine respectably. Side note: This is Bay Leaf's second location (the other being in Eden Prairie). My order was for takeout today. When I got there the person at checkout was polite but not overly helpful. To be fair, I think he had just taken another order and it's only been their first few days open. A lady stopped by from the kitchen who seemed to be more familiar with the take out process and was super friendly. They might want to consider keeping her front of house during these early days in Eagan. Engaging with customers seemed to come more naturally for her than it did for him. My order was fairly tame - butter chicken, naan, and veggie samosas. Portions were fair to generous for each as well as for the basmati rice accompanying the meal. I asked for the chicken to be very spicy but it was mild even by Minnesota standards. So, my assessment is definitely good enough to try again but not convincing enough to say I'll become a regular. At least not yet. If the customer service today - although adequate - was any indication, there's a significant miss for those of us who are testing the waters with Bay Leaf right now. read more

One of our first forays onto in person dining, this was excellent! We came right at opening for dinner at five, and there was a line waiting till pick up orders. I have been here many times and the food never disappoints. I usually take my order to go as the service can be painfully slow, although the staff is very friendly. We found this restaurant while driving through the strip mall and decided to stop in for dinner. The restaurant opens at 5pm, we were seated in a comfortable booth by the window. The staff had menus and water to the table immediately and took our drink order. The menu has much the same entrees you would find in similar restaurants. We started with the garlic naan, baked to perfection to allow for the bread to remain moist and seasoned with just the right amount of garlic. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, which I have enjoyed in other establishments and chose a medium rating for heat level. The chicken was cooked just right and smothered in a bowl of sauce and vegetables, accompanied by a large bowl of rice. The sauce was seasoned just right and easy to determine it was made fresh based on taste. The garlic naan was also very good with the sauce. The staff are great and the food was great! read more

It wasn't very busy, but service was slow. The menu did not say that pops were by the can. The complimentary water was Luke warm, and not refreshing at all. My wife and I both ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. Mine Spicy, and hers Very Spicy. What we got was not even close. Mine was very bland and did not have much flavor. My wife's came with inedible chili pods left in the sauce so she had to pick them out. If they had taken what they considered Very Spicy, and ramped it up by 50% then that's what I would have considered Spicy. When the waiter finally showed up as our meal was nearly complete to ask us how it was, and I told him neither of us felt the food was spicy, he just kind of looked confused and poured us more water and we never saw him again. We stopped by for take out once again last night and we were not disappointed! We had food from an Indian Restaurant last week in Woodbury (and it was ok) but the food was not as delicious as Bay Leaf. Bay Leaf in Eagan is consistent and so superior to any other Eastern Indian Cuisine in the area. Please support this small business as you are lucky to have them. If only Yelp let you give half stars. Bay Leaf is a 3.5 star place. Nice people, if not what you would call warm and welcoming. There's a diverse menu to choose from and the naan is on point. However, nothing stands out and they're charging a ~20% premium that they shouldn't be. However, as the only real Indian food option in the area they have an immediate baked in premium. This was the best Indian food I've ever had. I'm in outside sales with a 5 state territory, and use to cover Illinois and Wisconsin as well. I've been to the top 3 or 4 Indian restaurants in each state as I am a sucker for the lunch buffet when on the road. No one can touch this place. The Lamb curry was spectacular. I am not factoring the owner of the place (I assume) and how sweet she was. Had I done so I might have to guess that this is the best on the continent as I've eaten at several top places in CA as well. If you're in Minnesota and enjoy Indian food, even if it's out of the way going anywhere but here is to do a disservice to your tastebuds. Yes I am a fan, so 5 stars! I am always a fan of good Indian food, and a place that provide that with a good atmosphere and great service. A friend had mentioned about the chaat here being really good, so was always considering coming here. We were shopping in Eagan and realized this restaurant was near by and decided to give it a shot. We ordered a Papdi Chaat, Ghee Roast Dosa, Laccha Paratha, Navarathna Korma. The Papdi chaat was amazing, crunchy, flavorful, not too spicy but all the flavors that a chat is required to have. The Ghee dosa was perfect, there are very few places in Twin Cities that make such good dosas, so this one is on that list now. The Laccha paratha and Navrathna Korma was really good, creamy and flavorful. Their service was quick and warm, a special mention about their amazing employees- We had a yelp $5 cash back, which was for weekday dining. I did not notice that and showed it to them while paying the cheque. Even though it was a mistake from our side, the lady who doing our cheque apologized multiple times and refused to take a tip. I was just amazed, who does that?????? I live in Uptown Minneapolis but I am surely going come here again and the drive is worth it. Loved loved loved the Indian food here! There are very few Indian restaurants around the Twin Cities that are decent so I was very happy when I tried the food at Bay Leaf! It's not fancy. The servers are friendly! The food arrived promptly! But more importantly, the food was delicious. We ordered the sampler of the veggie appetizers which included 2 samosas, cut mirchi, vegetable pakora and tiki. All of above was delicious!! The samosas were my favorite. We also ordered the samosa chaat extra spicy and it was perfect! It was actually spicy, which I appreciated. For our main entrees, I'm a sucker for good south Indian food so I ordered the schezwan dosa which was perfectly spicy and came with sambhar, coconut chutney and a red chutney. We also ordered the paneer tikka masala with garlic naan. The paneer tikka was deliciously and creamy! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

So much yum! Very glad to have been recommended to try Bay Leaf. While admittedly I've only been to 2 or 3 other Indian spots in the area, this one blew them out of the water, both in flavor and value. My spicy chicken vindaloo was killer. The meat was not fatty or overcooked and the curry tasted like it had cooked for hours. Babe's spicy lamb biryani was one of the best seasoned rice dishes I've ever had. The papdi chaat was the Indian version of nachos that I never knew I needed in my life! My only regret is not ordering enough sauces/chutneys for all the naan. I cannot wait to get back up to the cities to try a paneer dish.. or two. Really just an excellent experience. read more

This Indian restaurant has quickly become a favorite! I brought a friend from India here after looking at the menu online and seeing many other options than the usual butter chicken. We were both very impressed with our meal and he now makes the drive from downtown mpls just to eat here! I brought my husband here to try their Sunday buffet and I can say it was one of the best spreads I've seen. They had pani purri which I never see at an Indian buffet. Unfortunately this place has really gone down hill. We would drive 20min each way to eat here but the service was almost non-existent. So disappointing. Weird experience, similar to other recent reviews. Orders were mixed up, food was literally slopped into the dishes, tepid tap water in cloudy glasses, plexiglass-topped table linens that were filthy with food stains and definitely unwashed, missing items from our order and when asked the server was clearly annoyed. He offered to-go boxes shortly after we got our meals - it was 6pm, they weren't closing anytime soon, and we had barely started eating. Also experienced the same dodgy payment process - we were still eating when the server evidently interrupted his own dinner (we could see food stuck in his beard, ick) and asked for my credit card. No receipt provided, I had to ask to see the total on the hand-held card machine (got another irritated look). The order he showed wasn't ours (there were only 2 tables occupied, how hard can it be?). I told him I always tip in cash as I selected the No Tip option on the machine. After he handed my card back, he stood there, staring - very strange. He eventually walked away with an annoyed look on his face. We didn't see him again until I placed a cash tip on the table, then he couldn't get back fast enough to take away only the dirty dish that the tip was tucked under; to be honest, it wasn't tip-worthy service. We dined in monthly pre-pandemic and always experienced superb, friendly service and delicious food. We continued to order take-out during the shut-down, and this was our first visit back to dine in. I was also the very last time I will order from Bay Leaf. The food was adequate, nothing notable - and the service and cleanliness of the restaurant made it a truly a creepy experience. read more

This place use to have very good food, my last visit was in early 2019. But today's visit was disaster food wise. Customer service was average. We ordered Samosa chat ( was not that great compared to last time), Mango lassi(Good), Chicken chatpata ( average), Chicken Hakka noodles( very poor), lamb biryani (very poor), malai chicken(poor), lacha paratha (good), tea( very very very bad was cold asked them to give us a hot one). Three of us went to the Eagan location for a noon-lunch today - and sat outside. "Lata" (sp?) greeted us, and she answered questions that we had - and made suggestions on what-to-order. We ordered our food and drinks. She came around several times during the meal to check on us. We ALL thought that the food was *exceptional* (naan too) - and "Lata" was a big part of our overall experience. Great! Everything we had was fresh, flavorful and hot! They have a great selection of dishes. There is amazing selection of vegetarian options. Their ambiance is actually better than some other places around the twin cities without being downtown. That being said, it is very casual. The thing to be aware of is their spice level is on the lower end. I ordered medium when I am not usually a fan of spicy food and it was quite calm. My husband loves spicy and his was also tolerable for my tastes as well. But what it lacked in spicy it was made up in flavor. We will be back and with friends. read more

I enjoyed their lunch buffet. My favorite was the butter chicken paired with the white rice. I liked the flavors of the curry chicken too, but be ware of the bones. Service was quick and friendly. My wonderful son took us to dinner here last night as a "thank you" for rescuing him and his car one frigid -10F night... We were well rewarded! My wife and I have dined on Indian food all over the world. This is One Of The Best. We went there specifically for a dosa. For those not in the know (you know who you are) a dosa is kind of a LARGE crispy crepe-like pancake. It's served with various sauces and toppings. Ever since a dosa-centric restaurant up in the far NW Minneapolis suburbs closed, we've been on the search for a new dosa place. Bay Leaf has filled that void! Crispy with a delightful crunch, it was spectacular. We started out with a spicy green pepper stuffed with goodies, breaded, and deep fried. Think an Indian take on a Mexican chile relleno. I wish I could remember the name of it... Oh my...it was YUMMY. For our mains we shared a saag, korma, and goat curry. All were absolutely top notch. Service was friendly and expedient. Always delicious and somehow better every visit! I moved out of state long ago, and for the past few years I come for the lunch buffet with my mom whenever I'm in town. Today I ate the best mushroom dish I've probably ever had, from anywhere, from their lunch buffet! I think it was a kadai preparation, unreal, so good. I'm a vegan and they always have great main dishes, usually a good soup, always a solid appetizer, typically some kind of veggie pekoras. Aloo gobi, daal, the mushrooms, and a thick savory sambar were the veggie entrees today. And piles of bountiful delicious charred chewy naan, rice, a giant pan of veggie biryani, and even little mini dosas. Lots of meat stuff too for meat people, always a nice paneer dish, curried chickens and whatever you omnivores like. Oh, and desserts! I really enjoyed this restaurant the first time we had it, but the subsequent times the quality of the food is just mediocre. First customer service is not the best. I have called to order food to go and they can be very rude and unhelpful. They also are not clear on vegetarian items either. If you are going to order on the phone, then I would recommend to have the menu in front of you. The garlic naan is good. The size can vary from time to time. We had a wonderful meal here including so much food that we had a left over supper last night. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Good food but they take too long to serve the food. This happens all the time. We have been there multiple times. Even a fast moving item like biryani on a Sunday took close to 25 min. Can do better on that part. During our recent visit we ordered chicken dum biryani and Hakka noodles, both were pretty good. And for haleem aficionados- they don't serve mainstream haleem yet.
