A tony salad is the best chopped salad you can get! And this is coming from a guy who never orders salads. I would drink the dressing if they bottled it! A tony for two really feeds four. In a quest for Jersey's great pizza, we tried this spot. First, love the old school vibes and ambiance. It feels classic old Jersey. BYOB and cash only. The food: we tried Tony's salad ($13.50), the baked penne ($14.50), and a classic cheese pie ($14.25). The salad was a robust mix of lettuce, olives, classic salad veggies, two kinds of cheese, and meats. Delicious and really flavorful salad. The pizza is great - you can taste the quality ingredients. That being said, it is a bit doughy. The penne was great albeit a bit basic. All the food felt fresh and truly made to order. Food alone - this is a 4.5 or 5. We happened to have terrible service - missing waters/no refills or extra napkins sort of deal which sort of put a damper on the meal. Firstly know this place is cash or check ONLY. Plan accordingly- although there is an ATM on site. Hopped in here on a Friday evening without reservations and were lucky to get seated immediately (with baby in tow). We know we were lucky as a few guests shortly after us had 30 min waits. Service was quick and friendly - they were very accommodating to find a table with room for a stroller. We ordered a cheese pie and some garlic bread. Within a minute a giant loaf of warm bread came to the table with butter packets. Our 9 yr old was in shock at the quick turnaround but we explained this was the complimentary stuff! He devoured half the loaf alone despite our pleads to save room. The pizza came our fairly quickly as well. They only have one size, which I equate to q chain "medium". I saw the yelp pictures with a bit of char on the edges of the pies (and was secretly hoping for this much to be what would have been my wife's dismay if she knew). No char, no worries. The crust was solid, had a crunch near the edges. They were generous with the sauce and cheese and some brown cooked spots on the cheese were just right. Solid pie- tasted much like a homemade pizza you make at the house (its a compliment). Our only note was that the sauce could use a bit more flavor. It did taste of plain tomato sauce. We ordered a pizza delivery Saturday night. We've had pizza from them before. The delivery was quick and friendly. The pizza was horrible, truly inedible. There was zero outer crust so lifting a slice was an unpleasant experience. It was weirdly shaped and the cheese and other toppings were just piled on and held in place by a thick layer of strangely viscous grease. This might have been made by a rookie but there should have been a grownup who cares supervising. Never again. read more

Then we share a Tony's Salad, a chopped salad that had lettuce, grape tomatoes, black olives, mozzarella and parmigiana cheeses, pepperoni and salami. The portions are crazy big. Easily big enough to share. Our group had Chicken Parmigiana, chicken cacciatore, chicken Arnold , and rigatoni ala Jake ( pasta with ground sausage, hot cherry peppers in oil and garlic. Had an awful experience tonight. Sat down at 5:45pm and ordered a pie, plain pasta with butter for my kids, shrimp marinara over broccoli, and penne vodka with chicken and mushrooms. By 6:45pm, nothing had come out. We asked a few times to check and very nicely asked if there was any way they could bring the plain pasta for the kids, but the waitress barely acknowledged us. The pizza and pasta finally showed up around 7. By 7:15 we just had enough so we asked them to just pack everything to go when it was ready. Meanwhile, two tables that sat after us had already eaten, paid, and left. At 7:30pm we finally got our food packed up and headed out. Unfortunately, instead of shrimp marinara, we had a container of plain broccoli. No shrimp, no sauce. I walked back in and showed it to the woman at the front who refunded me and told me to keep the broccoli. When we got home, we also found the penne vodka had no chicken or mushrooms. I went back again for a refund, and the old man at the register told me the dish costs the same with or without chicken and I should just deal with it. I told him that I didn't get what I ordered and would like a refund, so he threw $20 at me and told me to leave. Look, I can understand being busy. I can understand kitchen mistakes. I can even understand tickets getting mixed up so other tables get served first. But what I can't understand is rude service. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel it's important to share what happened during my recent visit to this restaurant. I came here with my children expecting a pleasant meal, but unfortunately, we were treated very differently from other guests -- and not in a good way. From the moment we sat down, the service felt rushed and inattentive. Our table was not checked on during the meal, and before we even asked for the check, it was dropped on our table -- something I noticed didn't happen at the other tables, especially those occupied by white patrons. To make matters worse, we were given takeout containers without asking, as if we were being pushed out the door. the staff made it clear they wanted us to leave -- while the other (white) diners were allowed to relax and enjoy their time without being pressured. This experience was hurtful and unacceptable. It's incredibly disappointing to be treated differently because of the color of your skin -- especially in front of your children. No family should be made to feel unwelcome or uncomfortable while simply trying to enjoy a meal. I will not be returning, and I urge others to think twice before supporting a business that treats people unfairly. read more

Recently we revisited Reservoir, a landmark Italian restaurant/pizzeria in South Orange. It's classic, old school, and cash-only. We had a casual, sit down dinner a few days ago and also ordered takeout this weekend. For dinner, we ordered a salad to share and separate entrees. Food was delicious and really hit the spot; here's what we ordered: - Jersey Beefsteak tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and pecorino, basil, balsamic vinegar, and lemon dressing - This was one of the specials hand-written on the menu board in the dining area. So fresh and delicious. There were pieces of garlic bread/croutons underneath the salad that soaked up all the flavors. Order it if you see it on the menu board. - Chicken Parmesan - The entree comes with either pasta or side salad. I went with pasta, which was served in a separate bowl. My chicken parm covered the entire plate. The breaded chicken cutlets covered in marinara and cheese was a hearty meal. - Eggplant Parmesan - My husband said this was one of the best - if not THE best - eggplant parm entrees in the area. He finished his plate before me. For takeout, I placed the order over the phone. We split a gluten-free regular pizza pie and a Eggplant Rollatini dinner, and served it with salad that we made at home. The GF pizza was pretty good; thin slice pie that could dupe for a normal bar pie. The Rollatini was really good. So I have been on a local kick lately. Just trying restaurants in my area. Now I have my faves but I'm trying to go out my box. Reservoir was one of my attempts. I've passed this place several times but never ordered from them. Then one Monday after work, hungry and needing something quick I ordered takeout. I went inside and instantly got an old time feel. As I suspected they've been around for decades and not much have changed decor-wise. A few patrons inside (again it's a Monday at about 5pm). The friendly cashier rang me up and I got my order. Before kids, we tolerated poor/nonexistent service because the food is affordable, well portioned and pretty decent (6.5-7/10). But we often wait at the table for over an hour for a single cheese pizza to come out. While it gives the vibes of being family friendly (always a kind and jolly crowd of diners to share the space with), I would definitely not recommend going if you have kids - it just takes too long and the staff is too unhelpful for it to be worth it. read more

A friend once told me that he never tasted nor ate most of the food that he served at a co-owned Italian restaurant. He said it was all about the business. I think that may be the case here. This apparently is a family owned business but the cook is not tasting the food. I was not impressed. I came here because it was the only place opened for lunch that had a 4 star rating. I fell for the hype. All we wanted was a quick lunch as we had stuff to do. The place was almost empty. About six Teamsters guys were already dining when we walked in at 1:15. A couple came in about 12 minutes after us. That's it. They received their meal before us. We were there until about 2:40 because the waitress waited 10 minutes before handing us the menu. She also put the bill in the table when we were done, but never told us to pay at the cashier. She stood there and waited until we figured it out. Not sure who is giving the 4 and 5 star ratings, but they must not have eaten the tasteless rubbery calamari (Which was served without lemon) and the bland unseasoned, over fried chicken cutlet sandwich that I ordered. Maybe the other stuff served is good, but I won't be going back to find out. The place felt grungy/icky and tight. I can imagine when it's crowded. The blonde waitress (I don't know her name) was stoic. Not very friendly. The rubbery and tasteless Calamari apps took 40 minutes to come out. The over fried and tasteless chicken sandwich came out 10 minutes later. The only reason they got two stars was for the tasty pizza. Friend ordered anchovies, which I don't like, but I wanted to taste the sauce and crust were good. The pizza was small. We were told it was a standard 8 slice pie. The slices were very small, almost look slightly larger than a personal pie. However, the sandwich that I ordered was big. I would have considered ordering pizza for takeout but I was put off by all the ready made pizza boxes lined up at the entrance floor, most likely collecting dust, rodent and pest dropping. This is just an assumption on my part. I won't be going back. There are other places on my list I plan to try. Lastly, this establishment does not accept anything other than cash and checks. This is one of my brother's favorite restaurants, so I've been a few times and have had everything from chicken parm to pizza to one of their gigantic pasta dishes. This place is unassuming and good for big groups and the food is oh so good. We always start off with way too many apps. My favorite appetizers are the fried calamari and a couple big salads (one with meat and cheese and one without). My brother always gets the green shoshito peppers, which I always try, and always realize they are way to spicy for me. The last time I came, my cousin and I split a mushroom and garlic pizza. It was so good! Thin crust, well done. Garlic was perfectly roasted. Just a great pizza. Between the two of us and all of the appetizers we ordered, there were four slices left over which we took home. To make this place even more wonderful, they are BYOB. I've lived in this area for over 15 years and my neighbors have always spoken highly of this restaurant, so I finally decided to give it a try last night. The place was bustling at 630p on a Friday, which was a good sign! In addition to the busy dining room, the kitchen was also cranking out to-go orders, so I was anticipating a great meal. Unfortunately I don't understand the hype: the seating was cramped and the food was average at best. I think that everyone is so bowled over by the huge portions, they overlook the flavor and taste. The best thing of the evening was the Tony Salad: it's advertised for two but could easily feed four or more. The plate was piled high with crunchy iceberg lettuce, roasted red bell peppers and red onions, and the acidic vinaigrette provided a nice contrast to the salty/rich salami and cheese. The clams Oreganata were disappointing: could hardly find clams underneath all the breadcrumbs and the all we could taste was the garlic butter sauce. The worst was the Chicken Arnold main course: chicken was unevenly cooked, with some pieces tender and others dry as the Sahara. The sauce was an undistinguishable "brown sauce", which I could only assume is based on veal stock, but it was so greasy with the fried onions, peppers and potatoes, we left most of it on the plate. The side of pasta was literally drowning in olive oil and some of the garlic pieces were burnt, which meant that some bites were wonderful while others were awful. My friend ended up packing up 80% of the chicken, which he will drop off at the lunchroom at his work because no one wanted the leftovers. On the bright side, service was fantastic: our waitress was attentive and managed her many tables with professionalism and grace. Overall, giving this place 4 stars because we're still in a pandemic and I'm currently grading on a curve. read more

Fantastic dinner tonight with friends at the Reservoir Italian Restaurant in South Orange. I gotta tell you, the Reservoir pizza is outstanding. We had a plain pie for our appetizer and we all agreed it knocked it out of the park. Portnoy, I think it's time for a revisit. The original Reservoir was founded in 1935 in the 14th ward in Newark, an Italian enclave. The Reservoir was one of the first Italian restaurants to offer a "Tomato Pie", which was to become "pizza". In 1965 the Reservoir moved to its current location at 106 So. Orange Avenue, in South Orange. Thus has been a family owner and operated establishment for over 70 years, and still serving mouth watering food using many if the families original recipes. Bill Agnellino (pictured) is the grandson of the original owner, Vincenza Agnellino. (Pretty cool). The portion sizes are huge and the prices are reasonable. If you leave the Reservoir hungry, shame on you. LOL. For entrees I had Jerry's Veal; fried veal cutlet with mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, onions, arugula and balsamic dressing. Excellent dish. Adam went with Rigatoni aLa Jake; fresh ground sausage, basil, hot peppers, over a mound of pasta. Adam liked it so much he returning tomorrow with his whole family. Dave settled on Chicken Arnold; chicken in a briwn sauce with italian llong hot peppers, onions, and fried potatoes. Thanks to the staff for the complimentary dessert; cannoli's and tiramisu, to go with our cappuccino and espresso. If you haven't been to the Reservoir in So. Orange you are missing out. The place became a family go-to for delivery during the pandemic, and I fell particularly in love with their calamari marinara. Post pandemic we have taken to dine-in. Wow what a find! The pizza here was the best I've had in the SOMA (South Orange Maplewood) area! They've been making pizza since 1935 and in 2018 they still make impressive pies. I just happened to be driving by the South Orange train station in traffic and noticed the sign "voted best pizza in NJ" from some magazine and chuckled to myself being Brooklyn born and Manhattan bred, and have had some amazing pizza then drove away back home. Later that evening my lady had planned for us to order from Arturos who I've wanted to try but they're always packed, so when she suggested I call on a Friday at 1:30pm for a 6:30 delivery I had to laugh, but complied, when I called them I could not believe that they said the restaurant was beyond the capacity of its ovens for the day due to orders ahead the day before. Wait, what? You don't want my money? Or a new customer? So then I remember little restaurant on South Orange avenue a block west of the end of the S.O. station with the odd name I couldn't remember and the bold claim of NJ's best... So we order 2 pies done 4 ways, cheap base price and $1.50 per topping, and I do not expect the claims to be true, I've heard that before, "you've tried the rest, now try the BEST", yea buddy, I read the box quote... So the delivery guy comes, I grab the boxes and when I loft the lid, hmm looks good... Holy cow. I don't think I've ever had a fresh hot pizza delivered to any address that was this good. My lady has been to Arturos and she said this was considerably, noticeably better. So that's it, I'm done looking for Pizza in the SOMA area, thank goodness. It's family style size portions. In other words, if you want the rigatoni alla Jake and your sweetheart doesn't, be prepared to take a lot home with you. For the amount you get the prices are exceptionally reasonable. Try the eggplant rolitini, rigatoni alla Jake, Jerry's chicken and of course pizza. Is the pizza the best ever? No. But it's better than most and it's the 1st place I go to for take out pizza. Ah the pizza that never came...... I've slept on this review for over a week now. This place was a huge disappointment. I live in the area so it's been on my list to try and after the great Barstool Pizza review and outdoor seating, it seemed like a great option one Friday evening a couple of weeks ago. We ordered a few pasta dishes for the family as I was the only one who really wanted to try the pizza. Strike 1: fried calamari app came out COLD and rubbery. It didn't taste right either. We never send food back but we did here. SAME plate comes back 5 minutes later with warm fried calamari that tasted even worse and was even more rubbery. I don't know how a place like this could even screw this up so badly. Strike 2: pasta dishes arrive one by one like 5 minutes apart from each other. The rigatoni with oil and garlic was the worst, pretty much pasta in a bowl of warm water and garlic chunks. It was like a dish you'd expect to see on some Restaurant Rescue show. Strike 3: ah, the pizza I came for. We kept asking where it was? Everyone was long done with the staggered pasta dishes. Server said that they were busy but we saw pizzas making it to other places and out the door. Getting all the dishes to the table together should have been the priority. Now here's the grand finale - we finally give up, said cancel the pizza and asked for the check. (Oh this place only accepts cash so if you go here stop at your preferred ATM first.) As I'm waiting to pay the bill the table near us that had arrived maybe 20 minutes earlier tops gets several pizzas to their table. We politely ask the server how it wasn't too busy for those pies. Seriously how did it take so long to get our food and theirs comes out in 20 minutes? She stumbled to explain and finally confessed they were friends of the owner.
