The service was impeccable. The food is an experience if you do the tasting menu. This was a great business meal and the atmosphere on the balcony is delightful. It's a one time deal as it was quite pricey, but I feel it was worth it for the experience.

We love Jose Andres restaurants and have been to several around the country including this one on prior occasion. This time, I wasn't wowed with the food unfortunately. The food seemed underwhelming despite the attempt to do something different. Even the steak was off which I requested as medium but came out more rare than medium. No, I didn't send it back as I attempted to enjoy it although it also lacked flavor. My wife wasn't even impressed which says a lot. The dishes were artistic looking but didn't meet the standard for which we appreciate at a Jose Andres restaurant. After paying the bill, I couldn't help but wonder where we could have enjoyed a better meal for a comparable cost. I likely will try another option before returning to this restaurant. With being in town to see the cherry blossoms, I figured I would try to wine and dine my wife with a nice meal.

Is it better to call for reservations or book online?

Either. We booked online when we went

Are the 2 tasting menus available during the lunch time hours, dinner only or all day? I eat my heaviest meat midday, between 11AM-1PM, for health reasons..

Do men have to wear jackets?

No, it's not required or that formal, but it is smart causal or date night clothes.

Does one need a reservation for the bar area?

I dont believe you have to reserve the bar. I believe its first come first serve.

Are shorts ok for a man when eating in the afternoon from the bar menu?

Yes, if at the bar you should be fine! Enjoy!

Does anyone know how far in advance they take reservations?

We had to book a month in advance, however, for us, it had just opened 2 weeks prior. So, hopefully, it is more available now.

Can dietary concerns be accommodated? We would like to leave off caviar and egg products, etc. from some dishes.

Yes, the waiter asked about dietary restrictions. They are accommodating.

It is typical of Spanish flavors, heavily relying on high-end cured meats and cheeses, and classics such as croquetas. There is something very special that goes into tapas because its suppose to satisfy you based on good taste over quantity. Large shrimp in a generous skillet of olive oil and slow cooked garlic slices and a iberico mac and cheese are some examples of how they elevate classics we are familiar with. We really liked that they learned into garlic and spice. We found dried Aji Caballero in our meal, great attention to source country. They have a very robust and generous drinks menu. Loved watching others not dining alone and embracing that share quality of the menu design. Perhaps it is not the best tapas I had, I would have liked to see a balance with lighter citrus flavors but maybe that was an ordering issue. At some point, since the menu heavily leans towards rich and decadent, its better to plan around that. Our waitress was amazing, she explained the questions we had on the ingredients and was on it with the refills.

After having a full meal with cocktails, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee (about $70 per person), I concluded that Atxondo will be a definite future destination for Happy Hour and light bites, but that my full meal dining dollars will be spent elsewhere. The Patatas Bravas (Fingerling Potatoes) were outstanding, with their two tasty sauces and rich, crispy flavor and texture. The Hibiscus Margarita with its salt and tajín rim was good enough to warrant a second one... but the Sangria was lackluster due to the complete absence of cut-up fresh fruit in my glass. The "Crispy Duck Breast" is no longer served whole, but sliced on a bed of sauteed kale... and, sadly, seemed to be only a shadow of its former self. The Lamb Meatballs suffered from being mushy (a coarser grind would have made a world of difference in the texture) and lacked that meaty exuberance one treasures in any kind of meatball. My serving of Basque Cheesecake was almost comically tiny (at $9 per serving, perhaps not so funny after all). But my cup of Americano came out of the espresso machine strapping strong and piping hot, with a gorgeous head of natural crema from the oil of the coffee beans. So I will definitely return for a future Happy Hour to devour the outstanding Patatas Bravas and sip the good Margaritas, and to try the bargain Manchego Burger and other Happy Hour bites. For serious dining, Atxondo falls short of the mark... but for drinks and bar food, Atxondo turns out to be a real neighborhood gem. .

Atxondo really strikes me as an underrated gem. It's only about a mile walk from the Petworth Metro, is right on several bus lines and for us, coming from silver spring, the drive was a very easy ~15 minutes. Intrigued to hear how often people in the neighborhood come here. It's mostly a tapas style, so everything but the paella is smaller plates. Everything is wonderfully tasty. The mini chorizo, with the accompanying chips absorbing the chorizo liquid were awesome and our group also loved the cremini mushrooms. I love a good paella and Atxondo's is a standout. really wonderfull flavored and plenty for our group of 5. They say it's enough for 2-4, but unless its your only meal of the day, I fully think a group of 2 would have leftovers. It's definitely on our list to return

I'll definitely be stopping by often to grab some to go for my home-cooked meals! I'll be dipping everything with Jeow Bong! Good start to the meal. The lamb kleftiko is the standout of the three. Slow-cooked until it falls apart easily, with the seasoning penetrating all the way through rather than sitting on the surface. It's a dish that rewards the time it takes to prepare -- nothing rushed about it. The kofte kebab holds its own too -- well-spiced, good char on the outside, moist inside, not dried out the way kofte can sometimes end up. Solid textural contrast against the kleftiko. That made the experience feel even more special in hindsight. We walked in on a Monday night without reservations (clearly a theme for us!), not knowing they were needed. Thankfully, they were able to seat us in the bar area, which turned out to be a perfect spot for a relaxed dinner and a glass of wine. We ordered a mix to share: hummus, spanakopita, kofte kebab, and adana kebab. Everything was delicious, but the spanakopita really stood out. It was a bit unexpected--not layered like the traditional version, but more of a rolled presentation. Even so, the flavors were wonderful and elevated in a way that made it memorable. The only slight disappointment for me was the wine selection. The red wines leaned more dry than I typically prefer--I tend to go for something more fruit-forward--but it didn't take away from the overall experience. Dessert was the one miss. We were really hoping for baklava, which wasn't on the menu. Instead, we ordered the walnut delight. While it had all the right flavors, it didn't quite deliver the wow factor we were hoping for. That said, the food, atmosphere, and overall experience were still impressive. I was excited to learn that Zaytinya has locations beyond D.C., including closer to home in the Bay Area--so I'll definitely be visiting again. Highly recommend, and maybe make a reservation!

We had reservations to dine at Amazonia, we arrived before our reservation time and were greeted not very amicably. The service the rest of the night was equally as mediocre. Our waitress was unfriendly and didn't check in as often as needed. We were done with our food and a good 20 min went by without getting the dessert menu we had requested. When we were done another 15 min went by before we got the check even though there were only 3 tables occupied. We sat in the patio, the ambiance was nice but the cherry on top of the mediocre food and bad service was when we saw a mouse running under the tables. Luckily it was when we were waiting for our check because I would have definitely left mid dinner. Definitely not the dinner experience we were hoping for. Now on to the food: I will start off by saying that we love Peruvian food. We have traveled to Peru a few times specifically to try their amazing cuisine. We have tried various Peruvian restaurants in DC (at different price points) and around the US and this one without a doubt has been the worst. - lomo saltado: we ordered this because it is hard to mess up this dish. It is always tasty! Well, somehow it was not the case. The sauce was way too thick and tasted like straight up tomato puree. - ceviche amazonico- the portion was small, the sauce was tasty but nothing memorable. It was too fishy in a bad way. - papas de huancayo- these were the best out of all the dishes ordered. But weren't amazing. We order a pasta, I forgot the name, with a ragu sauce- it was ok-ish. Is this even Peruvian? For dessert we had the chocolate cake with Lucuma ice cream- the portion was tiny. Again it was ok, but nothing amazing or memorable. Overall the food was not at all what we were hoping for. The portions don't match the steep prices. And the flavors are not there. At least not the traditional Peruvian flavors. The service was terrible but of course they automatically add a 20% service fee on the tab. What motivation do the servers have to do a good job if they know they are getting the tip anyways? Overall this was a bad experience, we won't be back and won't recommend.

The organizer had booked the brunch about a week in advance and had coordinated with the restaurant to pay a large group deposit. The reservation was for 1:30 PM, but our table was not ready until 2 PM. When we were finally seated, the table was only set for 20 people. We were in the upstairs room with another large group, so there was no space to really add two more chairs to our table. We had to crowd into the table to accommodate the last two people. Even though the brunch is bottomless with a menu to choose from, the servers decided to just bring random items from the brunch menu to the table. Honestly, some of the worst food I have ever seen. The vegetable vitamin salad looked like slop, as did the rice/salad dish, which I'm not even sure what it was called. We were also brought a trio of three dips as well as pita and cornbread. The dips were very bland, the cornbread was dry and flavorless. As I did not like any of the items that the servers selected, I begin requesting other salads/appetizers off of the menu. I requested the Greek/Mediterranean salad and the pickles, both were very underwhelming. As far as the brunch foods, the menu was literally all over the place. Even though this is a Balkan-inspired restaurant, there were items such as fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and shrimp and grits on the menu, which don't actually make sense in light of what Balkan cuisine is. The best thing I ate was grilled steak, which was on a platter with eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes. There were two Belgian dessert waffles as well which were underwhelming. The only decent thing about the entire experience is that our servers kept the mimosas flowing. Each person in our party paid $75 inclusive of tax and tip-- 100% NOT worth it.
