Be Love has the best vegan food in town, as long as you pick the right dish. Skip the overpriced salads and go straight for the big bowls full of delicious goodies - if you're going to be spending this kind of money on a meal, you might as well get something substantial. On my last visit I had the Numi Noodle Bowl, and it was out of this world. The first meal I had was the Macrobiotic Bowl, and it was equally outstanding. Almost everything in between has been just as good. On the other hand, a while back (before they changed their menu) I had an Indian chickpea curry, and it was entirely lacking in kick or, generally speaking, Indian flavours. In general, Be Love always errs on the side of underspicing rather than overspicing, with the result that some dishes can be a bit bland. Once I figured out what they do well, though (bowls with European or Japanese flavours, in particular), I haven't been disappointed once. Their desserts are another high point. Raw cheesecakes made daily in new flavours, tasty little chocolatey bars, and even tiramisu. They're pricey, but worth every penny and rich enough to share. Pair with a hazelnut milk latte or medicinal chai tea for some real indulgence. read more

The night before our wedding my husband and I decided we needed a date night before the big day. Every person we told we were vegan demanded we go to this restaurant. Which worked out well since we were already going to dine here. We arrived and were not greeted right away. We stood at the front for a minute before a girl took us to our table. The decor was clean and contemporary. A young gentleman came over to greet us and inquire on our evening. Come to find out it was the owner. He gave us great advice on our meal and after dinner drink locations. We both ordered a cocktail. I forget the names were but they were both delicious. We looked at the menu and after drooling we went with the curry chickpea soup and raw sprint roll as our app. The soup was so good we couldn't believe it. My husband took so long eating it to savor every bite. We then ordered our mains I got the brahma bowl and the mister got the love pad Thai. Both had such so much flavor and were so fresh. Everything was vegan and gluten free but taste and texture was not sacrificed. We both really enjoyed sharing each other's dishes. After we looked forward to having some of there ridiculous looking desserts. I ordered the lemon tart and he got the love sundae. Mine came with lavender ice cream and his with homemade vanilla ice cream, raw chocolate sauce, and chocolate granola cookie things. Our hostess must of thought we were crazy for ordering all that food but we ate every last bite! The entire meal was delectable from beginning to end. If there's only one place to eat in Victoria this spot is it. It seemed a tad pricey but then again we got 2 drinks, 2 soups, 1 app, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts for $130. Worth every penny read more

Best kind!!! Yay organic food! Yay pink salt on every table! Vegan, gluten free options, non GMO and the water they bring is filtered!!!!!! My favorite place in Victoria to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. A great place to go for someone with food allergies or restrictions. I tried a few different dishes which were all delicious, but I kept going back to the green bowl, but I subbed rice for quinoa. I want to eat it right now. Service wasn't slacking either. Everyone was polite and so helpful with any questions I had. The coolest thing is the glass jars. If you order a drink to go it comes in a cute glass jar and they only charge you $1. You can bring your jar back to re use it get your $1 back. Saving the earth and our guts at the same time! read more

Beautiful looking food that is healthful and interesting! The BIBIMBAP BOWL is a colourful combination of various flavours and textures. I enjoyed the sauteed vegetables, brown rice, and soft-boiled egg. I wish the dish tasted a little less acidic, but that may just be my personal preference. We also tried the BOUNTY BURGER; I would recommend it IF you would like the taste of an almond-chickpea patty, and pickled vegetables. The SQUASH SOUP was the soup of the day, and it was thick and delectable. I might come back to try the other soups, desserts, and smoothies, but the sandwiches and bowls don't quite agree with my ordinary taste buds. read more

While visiting Victoria, my husband and I were looking for a good vegan place for dinner. Everyone mentioned Be Love, so we were really excited to go. Upon arrival, it's very small but it was busy so that's always a good sign! We were starving so we ordered shortly after sitting down. We started with a veggie wrap and bruschetta. The wrap was delish! Nice Thai dipping sauce. The bruschetta...uuuuuuhhhhh I honestly thought we were being punked. It was 3 teeny thin pieces of bread (about the size of a toonie) with a few tomatoes on top and some pesto for 10$!! It was the biggest rip. On to main course, I got the white bean burger and it was delish! My husband ordered the Mac and cheese...he was fairly disappointed. It tasted good but really there wasn't much pasta. It was 80% onions, broccoli stems. If you are vegan, I would say try this place out. My burger was excellent, however I feel they skimped on other things. read more

I had been here in August for lunch and it was fantastic. However today for brunch was not the same experience. All of our meals were very cold and tasted like they had been made the day before. When I asked if they could make a scrambled egg for my son I was told all the eggs are pre poached so they couldn't. Which tells me the eggs that were in our meals were old and they tasted like it. The cashew Hollandaise wasn't flavourful and tasted like cold slop on top of hard cold eggs. The roasted potatoes were cold and hard and not seasoned. Overall not just cold but very bland. My son's pancake was hard but the coconut whip saved it a little bit. The service was very friendly and attentive but the food took a long time and was not enjoyable. Our bill in the end for two adults and a child with tip came to 83 dollars and my partner couldn't eat his dish, I muscled mine down because I was hungry. 83 Dollars for cold brunch. Food was good but the service wasn't great. Waited a long time for drinks and food took almost an hour. I ordered a specific dish due to allergies. When my food came I got the same as the other people in my party - I explained that it was incorrect and was told that I was wrong and it's the one I ordered. After waiting for almost 2 hours and never being there before I took their word for it, ended up needing to take my allergy medication. Asked the waitress to add my friends meal to my bill (for her birthday) and was given the bill right away. My friend asked for cheesecake and the waitress walked away to get it without asking if anybody else would like anything and charged my friend for her cake insted of giving me the bill or adding it to mine. Be love has won my heart yet again. I first went a year or so ago with a few friends as a recommendation and was instantly hooked. the atmosphere is upbeat, somewhat snobby but not overly so and the staff is always nice. back in the day the staff working in the up and coming IT vegan/Gluten Free restaurant had a very snobby and pretentious attitude but things have evened out over time and it truly seems like be love has come into its own. it knows what it is and it does it well. instead of being the IT place they are now focused on keeping the #1 spot with improved customer service and by always upholding a food quality standard. the Green Bowl is my #1 choice and my recommendation for anyone visiting the restaurant for the first time. Consists of Dark greens, broccoli, bok choy & summer veggies in a Thai coconut green curry sauce all resting on a bed of steamed brown rice topped with avocado, toasted cashews, cilantro & scallions what more could you ask for? and in my opinion, it gives just the right glimpse into the roots and the modernization of Be Love. Lately, however, I have been introduced to the Mac & Cheeze (made with brown rice macaroni pasta tossed in a creamy coconut-cashew cheeze sauce along with summer veggies & greens, topped with walnut parmesan.) and can not get enough. this is a perfect example of Vegan alternatives being as good and in this case even better then the animal derived version. Mac & Cheeze is the perfect dish for that 'i ain't gonna try that hippy sh*t' person or even just for the person wanting a delicious meal! i have been disappointed in the past but they have always redeemed themselves. they keep making it back to the top of my favorite restaurant list. 10/10 would reccomend read more

My wife and I had a great experience here. Everything about it was really well done. The atmosphere (although really crowded) worked. We thought the place was completely full, but they ushered us to a table for 2 at the back of the restaurant. Now, we were really close to the table next to use, but something about the way it was all setup, it didn't feel awkward. Which was very cool. The menu had lots of vegan options and we settled on a couple of mains and a couple of starters. Everything we had was super tasty, no real standouts because it was all high quality fare. Even the desserts were top notch. I would say our server was the icing on the cake though, she was funny, attentive, and helped us to have a great experience. Go here when you want to be social and aren't in a hurry. I soooo wanted to love this restaurant. Coming from Dallas, where vegan restaurants are as rare as snowfall, I was excited about the menu and the concept. The food was really good - inventive, flavorful and fresh. I had the Green Bowl, which had loads of bok choy, broccoli, snow pea shoots, and cucumber in a coconut green curry over brown rice. It was warm and nourishing without being heavy. Just the ticket for a rainy night. Unfortunately, service was painfully slow. Given that the restaurant was packed, I could have overlooked the slow service. Unfortunately, the server was neither attentive nor friendly when she did stop by. There was a definite attitude that we were a nuisance. The other problem for us is that the restaurant is very small and the tables are packed together. Sitting next to a couple where the lady was extremely chatty and desperately trying to impress her date, it was an excruciating experience for two middle-aged travelers who were tired from a long journey and just wanted a quiet, refreshing meal. read more

I recently came here on a Saturday, visiting friends in Victoria. I had not heard of this restaurant, and my friend loves it, so we met here for brunch. It was very oddly quiet for a weekend, which was nice and made for a peaceful meeting and meal. The inside is lovely, with dark wood tables, interesting huge art pieces, and bright cobalt blue water bottles on the tables for dispensing your own water. I ordered an autumn latte~it was deliciously flavoured, and NOT full of sugar, which was nice. I had the Chilaquiles hash ~ very organic tasting, interesting textures and colours in this. I skipped the eggs and my friend ordered one of their funky'bowl' dishes. Thoughtfully planned, and beautifully cooked vegetarian fare ~ we both enjoyed our dishes a great deal. Service is saccharine sweet, and very efficient here ~ a rare find in restaurants today. My friend and I split the chocolate hazelnut ganache- divine! Despite all the wonderful aspects of Be Love, dining here is quite expensive. My latte was $7- and my entree (without the eggs), latte and 1/2(shared) dessert totalled $32. Eeek- hence minus the 1 star. Still, it's an interesting establishment that takes great pride in sourcing local, sustainable produce and ingredients- I recommend this restaurant if you like vegetarian/organic food. They seem to be doing very well and are an interesting addition to downtown Victoria. read more

For the longest time, I was only ever able to afford the Love Biwl, which was a unique by-donation option to make high quality health food affordable to low-income people. In the times when I had a budget for 7/11 pizza slices, dollar store ramen, and good bank canned goods, Be Love came through with the Love Bowl for whatever changd you could afford to give in exchange for a hearty mix of quinoa, edamame, and ginger dressing. It was often the best thing I could hope to eat in a week, and I'm still thankful they had such an accessible option read more

The quality of the ingredients was very good. I found the price a bit high but for local and organic I suppose that's fair. I found the burger good but lacking in flavor and a bit on the small side. The grilled yam sandwich was good in flavor but the thinker portion of yam was under cooked. The sandwiches come on a raw vegan bread which is quite good. For me the price is too high. In the area a comparable meal would be in the $10 to $12 range whereas the prices here are in the $14 to $18 range. I won't be going back but don't regret trying it. If vegan raw food is your thing this is probably worth trying. read more

The space: Okay, so if you're looking for healthy, organic and allergy free food... this is your place. Just don't expect it to be a casual, free-spirit sort of atmosphere. This is an intimate, candlelit space. It has an upscale atmosphere, which can be a bit shocking if you walk in wearing ripped jeans and a tuque. It's also a pretty small area so the tables are all close together, which can be a positive if you like eavesdropping, or a negative if you're looking for privacy. The food & service: The food was great. I only had an appetizer, but it came very fast and the water in my glass never fell below the halfway point. The portion sizes are fairly small. My $10 bruschetta included 3 crackers topped with cashew cheese, arugula and olive tapenade. You're paying for quality food, as well as a sophisticated atmosphere. Oh my gosh, everything about this place was fantastic. I arrived a bit close to closing time, not realizing it's a bit of an upscale joint, but they seated me without a fuss. The menu appears strongly seasonal, so be advised that the awesome things you read about might be gone... but something else delicious will surely be available! I got the zucchini lasagna, and it was just amazingly good. Although it was made of vegetables and not noodles, it felt like the real thing. Beautiful food! I loved their winter and spring menu. I am a little disappointed with their summer menu. It lacks flavour and substance especially considering the higher prices. The tomato sandwich was very soggy, the pesto zucchini was not creamy it tasted watered down! and a few of the other meals were not as satisfying... The portions are very small, it is easy to still be hungry. After a $21 dollar meal without tip and tax one would hope to feel substance in the tummy. I think they would do even better if they increased their portions. I am sure more people would feel it is worth another visit. Most of the waitresses are lovely. read more

For those of you who know me, I'm definitely a carnivore, with mad love for steaks, wings and BBQ duck. However, I'm always open to new ideas. I recently received an invitation to give Be Love in Victoria a try. It's the new restaurant opened by siblings, Joe and Heather Cunliffe of Cafe Bliss. However, living in Vancouver, it seemed unlikely that I would be able to take advantage of this offer. As fate would have it, I was able to visit Victoria last week and had a chance to give this place a try! I really loved the high ceilings in the space. It's spacious but not intimidating at all, it was really cozy and had a nice cafe-style feel. Just because they are vegan, it doesn't mean that Be Love doesn't serve up a mean cocktail. On the right is the Red Cedar Swizzle. The gin is infused with red cedar, then mixed with lemon, honey, angostura bitters. The flavours were quite woodsy and the garnish really accentuated that. On the left is their Black Star Liner. It's a warm cocktail with Kraken black spiced rum, quetzal cola syrup blended into steamed almond mylk (no real dairy here), then topped with nutmeg. Our first two courses are from the Soup and Salad section. Here is their Sesame Miso. It's a miso broth loaded up with seaweed, kale, sprouts, and various veggies. The nori in the chickpea miso sesame broth gave it a rich texture. The flavours are reminiscent of meaty Chinese sausage, as well as sesame oil. The miso and shitaake really stand out, and I loved the warmth of this dish. Our next item is the Warm Quinoa Salad. It's loaded with lots of roasted beets, more kale, crunchy toasted hazelnuts,and lots of shredded carrot (which I'm mildly allergic to). The sauce had a cumin base with a sweet and nutty balsamic vinegar, sweetened slightly by some fig juices. Although I'm normally allergic to raw carrots, I didn't have any reaction with this locally grown variety. It is definitely hearty and fills you up without being heavy. As you can see, there is an amazing cracker served with this, loaded with seeds and nuts, this is crunchy goodness at its best. We also tried their Masala Dosa. A fermented lentil crepe. The fermentation makes crepe a bit sour, which I wasn't a fan of. It's filled with a potato curry & served with tamarind-date chutney (more sour). The side is a cucumber-mint salad with a dairy-free cashew raita. The sourness of the crepe ruined this dish for me, but upon removing the cover, I really enjoyed the curry inside. Another main we tried was the Numi Noodle Bowl because it seems most "traditional" with a vegan twist. The buckwheat soba noodles & kelp noodles are tossed in a adzuki bean miso garlic sauce. There is also stir fried sesame baked tempeh, as well as some shitaake. There are random greens as well as marinated burdock root. The tempeh was weird to me, I didn't like the texture at all. However, I loved the taste of the broth, with hints of hoisin. I found the texture of the dish inconsistent, some were al dente, yet other bits of noodles were very clumpy. Overall, it was good, but it could have been a bit more uniform. For dessert, we got treated to their Karma Bar, a nanaimo bar like sweet with Salty caramel, pecans and chocolate! Oh my goodness, this was heavenly. Salty, sweet and just the right amount of gooeyness. I can't say that I would convert to veganism because of Be Love, but I would join a vegan friend here. It's got what I like (bold flavours and textures) and it serves up food that vegans would love. read more

Incredibly fresh, healthy, inventive and delicious . . . On my second lunch visit I enjoyed the satisfying Macrobiotic Bowl ($14). Layers of beautiful greens, squash, beets, sauerkraut, seaweed, sprouts and seeds, not only pretty to look at, delicious flavours. I couldn't finish the quinoa at the bottom. The tahini-lemon dressing that comes on the side isn't even needed with the flavour melange, but a nice mild addition. The libations list is long and fun to read. This time I ordered a cedar hydrosol soda and it was a refreshing cleansing distillate - the west coast in a glass! The only complaint I have from both visits is that a lot of ice is added to the drinks therefore you are only getting maybe a third of a glass of the what you ordered, and they are expensive. Be sure to order sans ice. Service is great. Tables are close, so it's OK for solo dining, but maybe not necessarily for romance and telling secrets. I could eat this way every day and I'm not a vegan . . . The menu has so many creative and nutritious options . . . . The dishes are prepared with care. read more
