It never ceases to amaze me how many utterly mediocre restaurants there are on the UES... This is one. I came here in search of good gluten-free options, which exist but they are not good. I personally enjoyed the potato cakes but my husband did not because they're made in a special way here. The French dip was good. Onion soup was not good. I never leave negative reviews, but this experience was extremely disappointing. The service was slow from start to finish, and the food was some of the worst I've had in a long time. I went to the beach café yesterday. I live close so I've gone a few times. I ordered the fish and chips. After I ordered, I went to the bathroom. When I came out, I jokingly asked the bartender if this was CBGB's. They didn't get the reference. I said, the bathrooms in CBGB's so bad that they used to make people sick. This was worse than that bathroom at my old haunt. They offered to let me use the private bathroom, but I said I already went. I asked if they had hand sanitizer and they said no. I got the fish and chips and I said they were OK and I said I would give them a good review, but I can't. The fish and chips were less than mediocre. And the only thing good about them I could say is that the oil is fresh. They've been there since God was a boy, and I guess they can rest on their laurels. I won't be going back. If you do go, I suggest you take care of any personal business before you go to the restaurant. read more

very disappointing We returned to Beach Café on the UES after having an enjoyable gluten-free meal the week prior. Our experience could not have been more different. We immediately asked for a gluten-free menu and ordered the gluten free egg breakfast as well as informing waiter about a food allergy. Halfway through the meal, we bit down into what felt like a sharp large piece of GLASS. It's just so happened the owner, David Goodside, was dining there - when we called him over to show him, he said it wasn't glass since he said he could "bend" it / therefore it was plastic, regardless, it was a sharp non-food/potentially dangerous item which was dismissed by him. To add insult to injury, we also learned that they gave the wrong English muffin, which was not gluten-free rather it was a wheat gluten English muffin (already halfway eaten). Instead of apologizing, he kept asking if we were sure we mentioned we were gluten-free. It's been six years and we always make it clear we are gluten-free. Besides the fact, we only had the gluten-free (not the regular) menu and pointed exactly to what we wanted. The waiter was lovely and we understand that people make mistakes but the owner spent the entire conversation gaslighting us - accusing us of not mentioning we were gluten-free and implying it was our fault. He also commented that we should have noticed the plates didn't have a stripe or a flag (apparently how they differentiate the gf items) - how would a customer know this unless they were regulars or if it was blatantly stated somewhere before ordering. There was no genuine apology for not only feeding us a sharp piece of glass/plastic but also the error they made which could have been extremely dangerous if we had been allergic or celiac. Instead Goodside repeatedly implied we must not have specified gluten-free, etc. He did finally apologize after about 10 minutes back and forth, but it was painful to get to that point. Thankfully, we are not celiac, but we have been very strict for over five years and that was the only reason we went to Beach Café to begin with Really disappointed by the owners behavior and will never return. read more

The Beach Cafe is certainly a reliable institution of the Upper East Side. The kitchen is consistent and very good. The place really has an interesting crowd. You will see the regulars who frequent TBC as a neighborhood place to gather, entertain and dine. You will also see newcomers, especially in the outdoor cafe area. Earlier this year, they created a "gluten free" menu which is the best in the neighborhood. Although they have a major take-out and delivery clientele, the dining experience makes the vist comfortable and easy. Young and old mix well in the welcoming environment. The bar is busy with an accomplished bartender who knows what he is doing. Given the neighborhood and local UES economy, TBC's pricing is reasonable. It is interesting that it is a place you will often find political personalities of both parties. Those dignataries sometimes host gatherings and book signing events there. The manager, David, runs a tight ship and watches everything morning ,noon and night. His customers are never rushed. It appears he knows his customers, his neighborhood and the "scene." This is an okay lunch spot. The brunch menu looks good, may have to come back and try it. We had: - French Dip - very good and the fries were cooked to perfection - COB Salad - tasty, with crispy bacon. Wish they would have cut the avocado as opposed to putting in half of an uncut avocado. Service is a bit slow, so don't be in a rush. I had the Monday special of Seafood Risotto (it came with a mixed green salad and desert). The risotto was cooked very well - nice and creamy. The seafood consisted of salmon and some type of baked fish chunks. It was tasty, but a little bland. I added pepper and it was delightful. The mixed green salad with a balsamic vinaigrette was refreshing, but the best was the dessert included chocolate mousse. Sweet, but not too sweet. Wasn't expecting much from this place since the brunch menu looked pretty standard, but surprisingly good food! French toast was fluffy, thick, delicious, and slightly custardy - and they added a nice touch by warming up the syrup. Avocado eggs benedict was also nice, nothing too crazy, but hit the spot. Loved the crispy potato pancake. Didn't get drinks but they also had good drink deals there... might come back for those next time I'm in the area. read more

Unable to accommodate food allergies. I had an awful experience. The waitress could not understand English enough to realize that I had asked if they had anything that could accommodate my food allergy. She had someone else interpreting it and spoke with the chef. They came out and gave me 4 or 5 options.I chose one of the options. Everyone else food gets served and the server( not the waitress) says we cannot accommodate your allergy. Gorgeous day out, they had outdoor seating, prices seemed reasonable. I was looking forward to taco Tuesday. Service was quick and nice. The food was out very quick and not good. I ordered each of the tacos. They arrived within 5 minutes and, somehow, were all cold. The carne asada was cold and dry but was the best one of all of them though that is not saying much. The chicken taco was drowning in sauce and I couldn't finish it. The fish taco looked good (was fried, with avocado and a chipotle sauce) but it tasted fishy, dry, the tortilla was like rubber, and I could only have one bite. I told the server that the fish tasted fishy and he said ok. Fishy means the fish is not fresh, right? They were $3 each in NYC so maybe I should have known. read more

I visited Beach Cafe for a weekday breakfast, which was pretty easy breezy. For my dining pleasure, I went with the Simple Breakfast (eggs, a potato pancake, small dish of apple sauce, an English muffin, and two sausages). The breakfast was fine, but at $17.95, I thought it was a bit on the pricey side. However, I cannot fault the restaurant for this because I saw the prices before entering. In my defense, there were not too many sit-down breakfast options in the area at that time. Prices aside, I will say that the service was pretty top-notch. One minor pet peeve: My tablecloth had several (old) stains on it. Here's my thing, ditch the tablecloths if it's too much work to keep them spotless or near spotless. read more

Beach Cafe is very unusual. I love the outside decor and I couldn't wait to try the Lobster Roll. They don't serve the Lobster Roll until 5pm and then you still need to call first to be sure they have lobster that day. I finally decided I would get here early one morning for breakfast. The French Toast looked great in the photos. Today I hustled down from home and arrived at my brunch time. When I entered I said I hope I'm not too late for breakfast and I was welcomed inside to sit wherever I liked. I presented my proof of vaccination and photo ID. I decided to sit at a table where I could see everything. I said a menu wasn't necessary and placed my order. I asked if it comes with coffee and it doesn't. I decided to pass on a drink and opted for ice water. It wasn't long before my French Toast and Bacon was ready. You have a choice of bacon or sausage. It also comes with syrup but I passed on that. No sense wasting it. The French Toast smelled so good and was plenty sweet enough. Everything on the plate was just enough for me. I left stuffed and happy. Naturally before I left I used the restroom. Everything on that end is fine too. It's clean comfortable and well supplied. I did need help finding the light switch. I'm recommending The Beach Cafe. The employees are very nice. Service was just right, not overly attentive. I met the owner as the employee said I should let him know how much I enjoyed my breakfast. He has a table in the back where he sees everything too! He said they have put a lot of work into the outside dining. It's evident. He also told me the enclosed area on 70th Street will have heat this Winter. I felt comfortable inside as I eat when most places aren't busy. I'm sure this will be my first choice when I have a craving for French Toast! And I want to splurge on myself! Some might say it's pricey. Today was a beautiful day in the city! It was about 67 degrees, extremely windy, partly cloudy, with sunshine coming in and out throughout the day. I was hungry and wanted some lunch. I had to take my dad to the city for a doctor's appointment (I got a parking ticket, but that's a story for another time). I thought I found great parking, but I misjudged my parking and the sign. Anywho... I spotted Beach Cafe as I was driving, and my windows were down, and I kept smelling this food on the grill and followed the smell to them. Their outside setup is nice and chill. The ambiance is excellent; I love the color of the settings as well. It's a real beach vibe but on the sidewalk. I went inside to use the bathroom. I can't tell how the inside looks, but it seems like a typical regular restaurant. I ordered the Original BeachBurger - circa 1966 with a side of French fries and a coke. The staff was very nice! I enjoyed the burger and fries. I don't usually order burgers, and lately, I have been diagnosed with TMJ (so it's hard for me to eat anything, especially things like burgers, tacos, crunchy stuff, etc.). The smell and the menu convinced me to get a burger. I got it medium well with cheese and bacon ($3 extra). It was very satisfying, and I must say I was impressed. They offer a wide range of cheeses to add to your burger. I got American cheese. I would suggest this restaurant! It's a nice vibe, especially with summer and warmer spring weather approaching. One thing I can say is the waiters or not always available, and you don't know who your waiter is, honestly. They need to work on that a little more. I witnessed one lady get out of her seat and said excuse me twice before she can get someone. I had three different people help me. After I got my food, that was it. By then, I was over it. The burger doesn't come with fries so make sure you ask for those, burger was really Good, fries were crispy and salty, huevos rancheros were a really large portion, eggs were cooked perfectly. I honestly don't know why this place has the rating it does! My friend and I came for brunch on Sunday and we brought our dogs, we sat on the outside patio. The waiters were very attentive and kind, even brought water for the dogs! We both ordered avocado toast, it was served on English muffins and had two poached eggs on top! We both ordered the bottomless brunch special which is $29.95 for 3 drinks (mimosas, Bellini, screwdriver, Bloody Mary) and an entrée! That is a wonderful deal in Manhattan!! On Sundays they also have half off bottles of wine!! The only thing I would mention is that they don't have very good options for non egg eaters! read more

I've walked by this restaurant for 4 years and always was shocked at how crowded and busy it is 24/7. Today was the day to try it. I was disappointed beyond belief 1) the wait staff have their masks off or at their chins. 2) I asked for mustard and the jar of mustard was put in the table. 1) it was expired. 2) I could not even think of how people scooped mustard out of there to begin with or how many people put their knives in there multiple times and onto their lobster rolls or whatever (scary for people with deadly allergies) 3) holy shit how unprofessional 3) my husband got the mashed potatoes with the chicken. He didn't even touch them- I'm sure the mashed potatoes was from a powder. Didn't taste like potato. 4) I got fries with my burger and I'm sure the fries were frozen. Really, add half a star for 3 1/2! Two out-of-town friends came to visit, so we just took a walk around the neighborhood until they were ready to collapse, lol, and we decided to eat at Beach Cafe; I know they're always crowded so I figured there has to be a good reason for that. We sat outdoors, & they do have an extensive set-up for that. We were comfortably distant from the surrounding tables; the servers all wore masks. One friend ordered the Cobb Salad; the other had scrambled eggs; I enjoyed the Avocado Eggs Benedict. Everyone liked their meal, but I can only speak about my own. It's two poached eggs over a bit of smashed avocado on an English muffin, would've been nice to have a slice of avocado on the side as well. The eggs were perfectly poached, runny the way a real poached egg should be, but not at all raw. On the plate were a large potato pancake, a bit on the greasy side but pretty tasty, and also a nice pile of mixed greens. Delicious & hit the spot! We thought 4.50 for a cup of tea was kind of up there, but it does come with an individual pot of hot water, so kudos for that. The coffee is 4. Anyway, the food was satisfying & the portions good; I wouldn't use the word 'ambiance' for seating on the sidewalk of 2nd Avenue, but the atmosphere was fine. That extra half star - the service! We were never rushed, & we did sit for a pretty long time (left a good cash tip). They were attentive & noticed when we wanted the tea/coffee that we needed towards the end of our meal. Perfectly fine weekday Brunch In the mood for eggs, I recently dropped in for a late morning weekday brunch and after perusing the menu I opted for the Eggs Benedict. It was perfectly fine - nothing exceptional but not bad at all. The one off note was that the breakfast potatoes were in the form of a very thin potato pancake - a bit overcooked and a bit greasy. Not much of a crowd on a weekday at 11AM and there was only one overworked waiter for both inside and out. Great brunch deal - 1 brunch entree and 3 brunch drinks for $35. Sharing charge of $5 for the littles who shared French toast. Huevos rancheros were excellent. 2 orders of croque madame - 1 plate had perfectly cooked over easy eggs, the other not as good but still very tasty. Came by last week and ordered a cheeseburger to go for my mom and it was perfectly hot and juicy. She is a cancer patient and had just finished a radiology procedure. It has not been easy finding food she enjoys, but this made her so happy, I thought we finally found something she'll eat! The same procedure was performed today and mom wanted the same burger. Sadly this time the burger meat was cold and dry. The bun was cold and soggy, even though it is packaged separately to prevent the likelihood of this happening. It was as if the burger had been previously made and heated back up just enough to melt the cheese. I work in restaurants and know the difference, needless to say we were very disappointed. I ordered at the restaurant and delivered the burger myself minutes later, just like last time. Note to restaurant, consistency is key when it comes to retaining customers. read more

Overall, very confused by this place and the atmosphere they are going for. I have passed it all the time in the UES and finally came for dinner with my boyfriend and cousin. I called to make a reservation but they only take reservations for 6pm and 7:30pm but "may have other openings earlier". We showed up about 45 minutes early for our 7:30pm reservation and got seated no problem. Not sure why they couldn't just reserve a table for 6:45pm like I asked? The menu is a mix of Italian/American/Mexican/Seafood. All of the food our party ordered was nothing spectacular and seemed overpriced for what we ordered. A small bowl of tater tots for $13? Service was almost TOO attentive and we felt like we were being watched by our waiter the entire time since there weren't many other tables. I realize this was them wanting to clear things when finished/asking if we wanted more. Decor was a bit all over the place - It looked like they were going for a "JG Melon" old school vibe but couldn't pull it off and felt a bit tacky. Overall, wouldn't recommend for dinner but the brunch menu looks like a good deal and outside seating looks nice since they are building a new patio! read more

Happened upon this Sutton Place area cafe that looks more like a bar than the named Beach Cafe. Even the decor doesn't really scream beach or a full on cafe. I'm going to presume the owner likes the beach and just wanted a different name to keep things interesting. LOL Truth be told, it has a neighborhood charm feel to it even though no one on Yelp seems to get why it is. Just accept it...and between us, I don't think they're hurting from the confusion or lack of stellar Yelp reviews. As I entered shortly after 9am on this brisk 10 degrees January morning, I noticed i was the only customer. Sign says breakfast served at 8am so I was excited to find a sit down (non-diner/non fast food-esque) place here in the East 70's. I had a choice of table, any seat I liked. I parked myself at a table closest to the bar so I could see the TV screen. Dining alone gives me time to read my newspaper or watch the TV without cartoons on. ;-) TV's at the bar were set to cable TV news and stock tickers scrolling across the screen. But interestingly, the music playing was rhythm and blues with jazzy songs in between. As I write this, I'm listening to "Unforgettable" (song by Nat King Cole), however it's sung by a woman...snazzy. Looking over the decor while I was settling in, I see Frank Sinatra on the wall. Guess that review I saw about the Friday night vibes and singers has something to do with the other singers on the walls. I couldn't decide what to eat with the yummy breakfast menu before me but I always love a Croque Madam if the opportunity presents itself. While the variety of eggs Benedict options were plenty, I had to take up this opportunity to try the French breakfast. I ordered hot coffee as well...boy it was plenty hot. Then when my breakfast plate appeared, it was just the right temperature to drink without wincing. My plate was packed with goodies... Side salad with house dressing to accompany my breakfast open faced sandwich. The eggs were perfectly sunny side up, on top of melty gruyere, tomatoes, and ham. The toasted French bread was a bit charred on the sides but soft and warm otherwise. Perfect. The sandwich was so filling and served with lightly seasoned tator tots. Great breakfast indeed. There was even a mini blueberry muffin served warm, on the side. Didn't need it as my plate was plenty full but it was a nice touch. By the time I was halfway through my meal, some locals came in as the waiter, Singh, seemed to know them by name or by their face. He even knew what they liked to order... Asking if they wanted the usual. At this point, he's already refilled my water and coffee without me asking for anything. Not sure what the bad reviews are about but I had no such experience here. I am curious though about the name of the place and unless there's some personal reason to keep the beach theme, this place doesn't need it. It is a cool cafe. I can just picture why it's the cat's meow on a happening Friday evening even though I was here in the daytime. Food was on point and service was great. I was really yearning for a steak as I don't eat much meat anymore. This was my second visit here. The first wasn't very good. Anyhow, it was Wednesday and the special was Prime Rib. Perfect, I thought. As the waiter walked by , I got his attention and tried to order the special, to which he told me that he would have to check with the kitchen to see if it was available yet. It was around 425pm. Moments later, the waiter returned and told me that the dish wouldn't be ready for about 40 minutes. It was cold outside and I wasn't pressed for time, so I told him that I would wait. 40 minutes passed and the prime rib dish came out. The runner who brought it, didn't mention that the plate was hellish hot. So, of course, I burned three fingers. Note: at no time was I offered a comp drink for the wait...or the burn. I took a picture of the dish because it looked pretty good. I cut the first slice , with growing anticipation and bit it off the fork. The meat was so salty and tough that it should have been served with show laces! I tried a few more bites and soon realized that the meat was totally inedible. I summoned the waiter and explained. His "deer in the headlights" look revealed that he didn't know what to do. I politely asked him if a manager was around. He mumbled something and disappeared. Minutes later , he returned and told me that the owner wasn't around. I told him to forget it and I asked for the check. He apparently was clueless about the problem in question as he asked if I want to take the prime rib home. I paid and left , and went to a favorite Italian restaurant on the upper west side. Like I said, this was my second venture to that place. The owner is one of those people who's been in the business too long and only extends himself to the local geriatrics. (No offense, it's the truth). Plus, this place is no Ciprianis and yet the owner asks you to take off your hat when you're seated. I didn't know if I was in a restaurant or a church. The ambiance is akin to a Bingo parlor in the Bronx. I doubt very much that I'll ever go back. Oh, the only thing noteworthy about this place is the music. They probably have it streaming but it's filled with classic tunes by Sinatra ,Bennett, et al. Then again , you can get that on your phone without paying $60 for a salty piece of leather. It was a good atmosphere w a casually NY beach decor. I went a long time ago during lunch or brunch, More recently, I went for dinner. It's cute and the menu is good with a variety of dishes. Desserts good, but no menu . They are in a glass case. It's mid range, but probably higher priced then it should be. Extra money for Fremch Fries with a hamburger which I did not order. It might get a bar crowd, I now forget what I ordered , temporary forgetfulness. It was good and it's close by. The service was not particularly attentive. Life saver decor and St. Patrick's Day decorations. Cindy Adams, the gossip columnist and other newspaper articles are on the wall. I think she was a frequent patron.. it's good for the night and lunch. read more

Tried to eat outside for a late lunch/early dinner. The restaurant was completely empty but we were told they have a strict no stroller and no baby policy. Our son is probably better behaved than a lot of the adults! The host was very rude and told us to go somewhere else that allowed high chairs because this was not the place. read more

We had Thanksgiving lunch at Beach Café today (11/28/2024). We chose the 3:00 PM seating as the 1:00 PM seating was not offered. It was a pleasant experience, and I hope that they attract more diners for the evening service. When we ate, only 5 tables were filled and a few people sat at the bar. For the T-Day holiday, they offered a $65 prix fixe menu that included soup, salad, white meat turkey, stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, an onion (?!), cranberries and dessert. They then sent you home with a second container of the turkey, stuffing and mashed sweet potatoes. We already had leftovers from the main meal, so the second take-home meal was an unexpected bonus. The desserts were very generous. Attached are pictures. I sense that Beach Café has a lot of regular customers. Nice casual spot on the UES. Had breakfast on a nice Sunday Hand sanitizer is on the table. Waitstaff all masked. Dividers between the tables. The eggs benedict and hueves rancheros were good. The basket of blueberry muffins was fair. read more
