Christmas roast with veggies, Yorkshire pudding, and a side of fois gras.
    Anne F.

I came here for their Christmas dinner last year, and it was one of the most fun experiences I've had. We ordered the roast, which was tender and juicy. It came with the traditional sides: veggies and Yorkshire pudding. The meal came with a choice of appetizer. For me, I chose the fois gras on toast, which was oh so buttery. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. It was so decadently sticky, caramel-y sweet. I loved it. Oh, and our meal came with this wrapped gift that you pop open for a surprise! We had loads of fun here. If you're looking for something to do in the city on Christmas day, try this!

3.5 due to service. Food 4 stars. Food Ordered the Scotch egg, calamari and fish n chips. The Scotch egg and fish n chips were delicious and I would order both again. The fish was a little on the pricey side at $31, but that is NYC. Calamari was good, not amazing so I would try a different app next time. Service We sat at the bar and 2 of 4 meals came out a whole 15 minutes before the other half of our group. We were done eating by the time the second round of food came out. Ambiance Cool pub scene. They play soccer games.

Jones Wood Foundry is a British pub/taproom and I went for a work event in the back room! The front part of the bar is narrow with mostly bar seating; in the back there is a big space with couches/tables and perfect for a private event. I'm not that big of a beer person but I really liked their cocktails. The Pomegranate-Ginger Fizz and Crisp Britannia were both on the sweet side which I enjoyed. The ginger beer came through and the cider was great, respectively. For food, we got a wide range of apps/sides. The fish and chips were tasty. The fish was pretty fresh with a classic thicker British batter. The arachini was pretty good - I liked the spinach one more than the salmon one, which could have used a little bit more seasoning. The kale salad with strawberries was good. I got to the apple pie a little later in the night but it was still crispy and crumbly; went well with the vanilla ice cream. Drinks came out at a reasonable time for the amount of people present. Staff were polite!

It's a nice place with great ambience. I came here to try their JWF Salmon Burger, and it was good and tasty, the chips were delicious too. Also got a Caesar salad with anchovy for an appetizer, which was fresh and nicely dressed. The sticky pudding was decent, but the rum sauce was a little bitter for my taste. They've got a good beer selection, and the one I had was crisp and refreshing--perfect with the meal. Service was friendly and smoothly timed, no complaints. Overall, food was solid--not wow-ed, but I've never been disappointed. Still a great gastropub, and I don't know many places that have a salmon burger! Definitely worth the visit.

1/25. Burns Night Supper- Scotch Broth. Warming and tasty
    Glenn C.

I went to this British pub with a small group back on January 25th for a special night that is only done that exact day though I wish they had these dishes otherwise as it was excellent. That night was the Burns Night Supper and they serve a small tasting menu for $65 a person based on the Scottish tradition, the Burns Supper. They also serve solely the main dish for the next week or so and it's nice to see that a place in the city that serves haggis. I got some alcohol along with it which was a glass of mead as they had a fun selection (yes I didn't get Scottish whiskey/sue me) which was tasty. The service was fine though a bit slow occasionally. The appetizer was Scotch Broth and it had lamb neck, barley, and root vegetables. The broth was warming and would be perfect on a winter day and had some pieces of tender lamb and a good mix of veggies along with some barley for texture. There was also some pieces of bread to dip in which was a nice touch. It was tasty and I will order her this from here if I had a cold and it was available. The main dish, the Haggis, Neeps & Tatties was better. They list solely the description of the haggis consisting of American lamb, onions, Scottish oats and Andrew Hamilton's special spice blend. For the latter two, neeps refer to swede/rutabaga and tatties are potatoes. The haggis had some richness to it and an interesting texture and there was certainly was a lot of spices in it ranging from a pretty strong black pepper to some other stuff I really couldn't identify. The rutabaga was sweet with a good texture and the potatoes were soft. The whole dish came with a nice broth presumably made from lamb also which was thickened and richer than the broth before. Dessert was Cranachan listen both in description as a traditional Scottish dessert and also as a dessert of cream and fresh seasonal raspberries bolstered by Scottish oats and whiskey. It almost reminded me of overnight oats in terms of texture outside of the very tasty cream on top and there was plenty of raspberries for sourness. There was also a light sweetness to the dish as well some type of cookie on top which I believe was a shortbread with some powdered sugar on it which was a nice touch. I'm not sure if they're going to do this dinner next year but for people who like lamb and for people who who want a very comforting meal during late January, I would recommend doing this. Mid 4 for the fun special and I hope they bring it back in a few months.

    Scotch Egg with tartar sauce.

I'd say it's more 3.5 than 4 but definitely better than a 3. I came yesterday with my mom for dinner. The staff were very friendly and inviting. My mom wouldn't tell me where we were going but when I saw the menu I knew she picked this place specifically because they have Scotch eggs and she knows how much I love them and how hard it can be to find one. I'd give the scotch egg 3.5 out of 5. They do a blend of chorizo and breakfast sausage, a mix I've never had before but sounded good. We decided to share one to start because we weren't that hungry and both were getting separate meals. It's perfectly crispy on the outside and the meat was tasty. The biggest downside for me was missing the description reading a "semi soft boiled egg". My favorite part of a scotch egg is the runny yolk from a soft boiled egg and this wasn't the case. I've also always been served some type of mustard, whether it's spicy brown or a curry mustard, here it comes with tartar sauce. They do have a spicy brown mustard so it worked out. My mom had Bangers & Mash and I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich. She really enjoyed the bangers & mash and my chicken sandwich was ok. The sandwich wasn't spicy at all, which was what I was hoping for based on the name but it tasted fine after I added some of the brown mustard. The French fries were very tasty! With all the restaurants to try we probably won't come back on our next visit to the city.

    Full English Breakfast
    Cyrus A.

Jones Wood Foundry is all about the English roots. So I had to try a full English breakfast, one of their brunch offerings on the weekend. It was okay, a decidedly mediocre dish. The eggs over easy came out overcooked instead. The rest of the dish was good, but again, nothing in particular stood out. Service was okay as well. It seemed like they had a lot of area to cover, between the outside seating, long bar, and the dining sections in the back. But aside from a couple of delays in orders, the servers were really nice and did their best. I could see this being a good spot for a beer in a quieter, local pub setup. Not sure I would seek it out for the food in particular, though.

Update from December 2024 - much better this time around. Came here with some friends and the service was still slightly slow and the food could have been hotter, but the food itself was tasty and everyone else liked their meals. The vibe is very cute at night (came for brunch before).

I finally got to this place and honestly if you blindfolded me and put me inside I would think I was in the UK. I had such a perfect experience here and the menu is so expansive that it will take many visits to try everything. From this current trip, I would definitely recommend the burger with "chips," the scotch egg and banoffee pie. I can't wait to go back to this charming cozy spot.

I have been to Jones Wood Foundry a few times, but this is probably the first time I have been blown away by the food. The shepherds pie is definitely my new favorite. WILL 100% BE RETURNING FOR THIS.

What a hidden gem. There is a courtyard and sky lights in this English style Pub. We went for a work lunch and the pre fix menu is awesome. Lots of great choices and you can do 2 or 3 from apps, mains and dessert. The service was top notch. The restrooms are fun with recipes on the wall. We had a great meal and will be back. The caramel crème brûlée was so yummy!

Yes, the place is small and the available seating space is limited and sometimes cramped, but that is rendered irrelevant by the quality if the meals and the service. (Word to the wise: Do not simply drop in, as the place is usually packed with customers who made reservations beforehand, so make sure to book your table online.) The food is always superb, just the kind of comfort food that I gravitate to whenever I visit England, and the cozy, intimate vibe of the place reminds me of what it feels like to be human after enduring ongoing dialysis three times per week for the past six years. The staff is always courteous and friendly -- special shout-out to the most excellent Molly -- and the restaurant's proprietor is quite a character who clearly gives a damn about the quality of the restaurant's every aspect. I have tried many of the items on the menu, but my go-to repasts include the Full Monty (the full English breakfast ), sausage rolls , and the bangers (sausages), bacon, and beans plate with an excellent multigrain toast. And though I am not really a dessert guy (I favor savory flavors) , I have great appreciation for their deliciously tart rhubarb crumble with hot custard. And don't get me started on their comprehensive roster of fresh teas served out of individual pots at your table. (I favor the blackcurrant tea with milk.) In short, Tea and Sympathy is a singular oasis in a mad city that becomes ever more of a nauseating tourist trap with each passing day. An eatery of its singular excellence is as rare as hen's teeth and is to be held most dear. It is rare for me to find zero flaws in a restaurant, and I say that as someone who anchored the kitchen at an award-winning barbecue joint, so take that for what it's worth.

A Yelp search for 'Best Fish & Chips in NYC' brought me to Dame. After a long work week, nothing…read moresounded better than this comfort classic. I made a reservation for a Monday evening around 8pm. Even at this time, reservations were scarce. It's not a very large restaurant so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. I ordered the Sourdough Bread & Butter, and the Squid & Scallion Skewers to start. The bread was crispy and tasty; a solid sourdough, but wasn't anything overly unique. The skewers were herbaceous and light. The green sauce was super flavorful - especially when dipped into by that sourdough. For my main I ordered the Fish & Chips (of course). Were they extremely good? YES. Were they the best Fish & Chips I've ever eaten? No, however this accolade belongs to an actual Chippy I ate at in the UK. As far as 'restaurant' Fish & Chips go however - these are the probably the best I've eaten. The fish was expertly fried and super crispy. The chips were thick cut and well-salted. My only complaint is there wasn't more of them. An extra handful of chips and you wouldn't see the bottom of the plate in photos - just sayin! For dessert I got the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Now this WAS the best Sticky Toffee Pudding I've ever had. Extremely flavorful. Extremely sweet. Would be perfect for two to share. As a solo diner, it was pushing my sweet tooth to eat the entire thing. But naturally, I did. The service was great. Super personable and attentive. I was seated at the counter overlooking the kitchen. Watching the chefs prepare every dish was fascinating and entertaining to watch. Definitely recommend this place!

A seafood centric restaurant? That's what Dame is. This has been on my list for ages and finally…read moresnagged a res to check it out. The resto itself is pretty tiny - probably why reservations are so hard to come by. As for the food, lots of seafood options. 1. The oysters were good albeit very rich 2. Sourdough was actually great especially with their cultured butter 3. Squid skewers were probably my fave. Perfectly cooked. That green sauce is herby springy and zingy. 4. Cucumber salad was pretty good. I liked the smoked mussels 5. Tuna was also good not much to say about it 6. Kedgeree was... just alright. I could have skipped this tbh. The rice had a bit of bite to it which I actually kinda liked. My friends thought it felt undercooked. It's basically just like rice soaked in a light curry 7. Sticky toffee / date pudding: I was excited for this since I've heard all about how Dame makes a banging one but this kinda fell short for me. The vanilla bean (sour) cream didn't really do it. Sour cream with a sweet dessert? I suppose it was to cut the sweetness but hmm... I've had much better sticky dates elsewhere Service was good. Overall a good restaurant especially if you love seafood. Probably not worth all the effort to get a res. But good nonetheless, would come back if it was a lot easier.
