We strolled through the neighborhood and passed Botte. Not only did they have tables outside the entrance -- still too loud -- but there was additional seating yards away. Not so bad. "Want Italian?" I asked S. (Sure!) Hank was happy. S was happy. T is always agreeable. And I didn't care. We ate family style. Arugula and pear salad with gorgonzola and balsamic dressing. (My daughter said that she's had better. I liked it). Spaghetti vongole. (The pasta is homemade and while there were a lot of empty shells, there could've been more clams.) Diavola pizza. (The spicy salami was delish.) I realized my preference for Montepulciano wine at this restaurant so of course we ordered a bottle. Better get dibs in while it's still warm. This is a great and pretty upscale place to eat, whether solo or with a guest. Their pastas and sauces are great. The ambience is amazingly peaceful and calm, especially when it is not busy--although they almost always seem to be busy. Botte has a nice atmosphere, but beyond that, the experience is pretty disappointing. The food is mediocre, not terrible, but certainly not memorable enough to make up for the service. We went on a Friday night around 10:30 and were told the kitchen would be closing in about 30 minutes. That was fine, and we ordered a pizza, which came out about 15 minutes later. After finishing it, we tried to order a pasta dish and were told the kitchen was closed. Again, no issue there because we understood we had arrived late. What was frustrating was everything that happened afterward. The staff asked if we wanted another round of drinks, which we ordered, and then almost immediately made us feel like we were in the way. We were sitting outside, and people started moving chairs around us, hovering, staring, and creating the very clear impression that they wanted us out as quickly as possible. That is what makes the posted late-night hours feel meaningless. If the restaurant is trying to shut everything down and push guests out, then do not ask people if they want another round of drinks. It felt like they were happy to take the extra money, but annoyed that we were still there to drink what they had just served us. At the end of the day, this was still about a $150 night for pizza and drinks, and we still tipped over 20%. For that kind of spend, guests should not be made to feel uncomfortable or rushed out the door. For a place with food that is only average, the service needs to be much better. Honestly, you can do better on the Upper East Side. I would rather go somewhere like Felice nearby, which may be more of a predictable chain-style option, but at least you are treated respectfully and not made to feel like an inconvenience after spending real money. read more

A solid neighborhood joint. There were plenty of seats on a Sunday night before 7 pm. The best part - a lot of stroller room! They have benches in the back so great for toddlers to sit and wiggle in. Or maybe struggling to hear us from how loud it was inside? The interior is warm with ambient lighting, loud (needed to shout), but a great intimate date type spot. We ordered: - avocado e gamberi (the star of the night, a salad, I know, but the fried artichoke, white beans, shrimp - perfection, really) - a squid ink fettuccini pasta special (second to the salad, but delicious - my mom raved about it!) - orichiette salsiccia and rapini (wouldn't get it again, but it was fine.) - a truffle pizza (wouldn't get this or recommend it...) - a blood orange Negroni for me (stellar, would come back just for drinks) That truffle pizza deserves some extra note - it's $37 for a fairly medium (small?) pizza that is noted on the menu as having shaved black truffle on top. They delivered it to our table with... nothing. It was a mushroom pizza with some truffle infused oil. We stared at it, confused, and had to flag down waitstaff to ask about it. One was a confused by us asking at all but the host (manager?) was quick to remedy it. It came back swiftly with a few pieces of truffle shaved on top. I'm sure our experience was dampened by feeling like someone was trying to pull a fast one, but the pizza really was forgettable. The pasta, salads, and drinks are worth your time. So I've been bc king to botte for a few years and this was probably one of the worst times. Here's a breakdown. We shared a pizza (during happy hour) and it tasted like one of those microwaveable pizzas. Not a lot of flavor and had hot spots. I got the spicy rigatoni and it was just fine. Nothing to write home about. We also had the meatballs and they were 100% microwaved. The outside of them were hot and the internal wasn't. The service was very egg our waiter was usually nowhere to be found. No "how's everything" "can I get you something" so it made the experience very "let's just get the check!" Their parm cheese is kept in the fridge so when it arrived at our table it was cold and clumpy which didn't mix into the dishes well. Our dessert was also microwaved not put into the oven. We got the Nutella tart and it tasted mediocre. Very chocolatey, which is on brand for Nutella, but there were hot pockets in the Nutella, so somewhere extremely piping hot and others were cold, which indicates that the tart was microwaved. Botte on the Upper East Side was the venue to celebrate Peters birthday after a night of tennis at the McEnroe tennis center. It was a Monday night and many restaurants are closed so we landed on this place for several reasons. We made a 9:45 reservation as we play from 8:00-9:30PM. The Botte team informed us upon arrival that the kitchen was closing soon and that we had to order quickly- Hmmm. I would suggest that there be better coordination between Open Table and restaurants to eliminate this tight turn- Maybe offer reservations up until 9:30 when a kitchen closes at 10pm?? Despite a shaky start the restaurant delivered with pleasant service and food quality that was very good. The arugula and pear salad and meatballs to start were really nice. The tiny bread offering to start the meal can only be described as skimpy- please increase this. The entrees of 1 Branzino, 3 chicken parm and a fettucine bolognese were substantial and very good. The circular chicken parm filled a big plate- plus a side of pasta. Service was attentive- and then it kicked into overdrive. Ashley warmed up to the group and delivered with some excellent desserts- Creme Brule and a custard of sorts- all with a candle for Peter. Complimentary lemoncello was served and it was a nice touch. Ashley even walked out an item left at the table. I guess the moral of the story is even a slow start can be revved up for success. Value was fair for what we received. BTY the place is homey and comfortable and we were able to glance at the bar TV for updates on the National Championship football game. It was our first time here and we loved everything we tried! My wife got the orecchiette with sausage and it was so flavorful and delicious! botteues is one of the best Italian restaurants in upper east side that serves a lavish cheese platter like the one pictured. The platter usually comes with charcuterie but the server curated a vegetarian version for us (which came with extra cheese!) on demand :). We highly recommend this place for all the ardent Italian food fans like myself. Must order the: 1. Charcuterie board 2. Salmone Arrosto: Atlantic Salmon, Roasted Potatoes, String Beans (I got mine well done which was cooked perfectly to my taste. Loved it!) 3. Cacio e Pepe: Really yummy!
