This is a true gem of a find. It's not easy to find a good seafood spot in GR and this one really hit the mark. Came here for a last minute birthday celebration and the service was fantastic. Everything we ate was DELICIOUS. I had recently heard about Beacon and remembered after I ordered our apps that the coconut shrimp was supposed to be amazing so called our server back and inquired his thoughts. He insisted we would love both but that we should stick with the calamari and gave us a voucher for 10$ off our next visit to try the shrimp. Ambiance was laid back and comfortable. They have a seafood boil which seemed to be the highlight of the menu and the best part for me was the Oysters (which they have on sale as BOGO on Thursdays!). Really pleased with my experience and dinner at Beacon Corner Bar! My mom and I came on a Saturday evening - we made a reservation ahead of time but there was nothing really going on downtown so the reservation was unnecessary! We started with drinks and I had the frozen lemonade mocktail and my mom had the frozen pina colada. Both were very tasty and refreshing. To start, I had 3 oysters and I loved these. They were not grainy at all/cleaned really nicely and overall just great taste! For my meal I had the brown butter perch. This was pretty good. The butter sauce was a little heavy and made it taste greasy at times but overall good and loved the asparagus and mashed potatoes on the side. My mom got the Connecticut lobster roll which came with potatoes and she loved her meal! It was a good amount of lobster in the sandwich and the potatoes were a unique cut but we both really liked them. The server was extremely nice and attentive. Looking for somewhere new to try we stumbled upon Beacon. As a Seafood lover it sounded up my alley. As usual I quickly learned there was not much I would be able to try with my allergies. Luckily, I could order the Shrimp Cocktail with lemon. They were delicious, fresh and nicely sized. I've also ordered the Oysters which were great. My husband ordered the Clam Chowder. He really enjoyed it and thought the flavors were great. This has become our staple order when in town. Shrimp Cocktail and Clam Chowder. On one visit they had a delicious frozen Creamsicle drink. My wife and I celebrated a birthday at Beacon! We really enjoyed all of the food we ordered and the atmosphere but we had an issue with our reservation, which was frustrating. When you make a reservation, you have to pick a table or type of table. When we arrived, we were not given our choice or even a table in the dining room. We were seated at a high top in the bar area that doesn't even have dedicated servers, so you have to wait for the bartender to have a break to come check on you. These tables are so small that it was less than ideal for a large seafood boil and appetizers. The bartender was literally some of our stuff on the empty chairs at our high top, which was beyond annoying. With our table issue aside, we loved the food. Everything we ordered was delicious and the portions seemed fair for the price. The quality seemed high and everything was fresh and full of flavor. Overall, we will come back but I wish they'd sort out the reservation situation. We escaped one of the rainy, dreary days this week by stepping into Beacon Corner Bar! This was our first time here- my fiancé is a newly converted seafood lover so I feel like we're still catching up on seafood spots! The nautical theme runs deep here- there's really no where you can't look without thinking about the sea. I, personally, loved the giant octopus mural. I got their flight from the flights of flavor campaign, which included three different types of oysters on the half shell, as well as drink pairings. This was my first time having oysters, so shoutout to Flights of Flavor for giving me a good reason to try them! The drinks included with the flight were: a bloody shooter, a Grapefruit Hefeweizen, and a Brut Rosé! We also got the boil experience with snow crab, and a side of mac n cheese. Honestly, my fiancé and I had no idea if there was a technique to getting to the crab meat, so we just got in there (and made a mess but that's expected!) It was such a fun experience, it reminded me of our time on the coast in Maine Overall, we loved Beacon! We stopped into Grand Rapids for one night, and we were staying nearby while craving some seafood, so Beacon was an easy choice. It was a casual Monday night so the restaurant was fairly quiet which we enjoyed. The host and waiter were very attentive and friendly for the entirety of the meal and didn't push hard on up-selling. The wedge salad and hush puppies as an appetizer were both absolutely stellar and came out about 5 minutes after we ordered them. I had the lobster Benedict and added sides of American fries and bacon. The Bennie was lighter on hollandaise than I'm used to seeing, and the lobster meat was plentiful. And Beacon used biscuits instead of English muffins. Brunch menu is a la carte. The Bennie comes with just that. After a year of wanting to try the seafood boil, I finally got enough people with an appetite to try it! We ordered every item and was happy about the experience! They give you bibs, gloves and wet naps so you can stay as clean as possible. The amount of food that we got had to come in 2 different serving dishes, and everything was delicious! They do not actually overfill you with "filler items" like potatoes, corn or sausage. However, I'd really prefer if they gave one corn per person to enjoy something other than seafood in the mixture. I'm sure we could have asked for more, but didn't. They also give you various sauces for the boil, that I felt was completely unnecessary, except the butter for the crab legs! My family really enjoyed the experience and I think it was well worth the money and flavor. First time visit. Strolled the half mile from DeVos Place Saturday afternoon, arriving 3:30pm. Only a few diners. Nice atmosphere. Ordered hard cider and craft beer, both draft. Started with cup of clam chowder, $6. Pleasantly surprised, it was served with a few clams still in shell. Very tasty, next time I will buy a bowl. Had the mussel appetizer, $16, as my main course. Came here to try their BOGO oyster deal. Drinks were well balanced, refreshing, and a multitude of options. This time around we only tried the oysters, so I can only speak on that. We got 72 oysters, and all of them were shucked perfectly. A variety of different selections from the East and west coast, my favorite being the more meatier ones. Definitely inquire with your server as my waitress was very knowledgeable on the different ones they had and why someone would like that particular one. Everything was delicious and quick, my only qualm is it isn't truly BOGO, as they only make the cheapest oysters you get free. So if you go for this deal, make sure you're aware of that, as we were surprised at the end when our bill had an extra $60 to it as it wasn't explained to us better. Needless to say, we pretty much had the place to ourselves and enjoyed a relaxing dinner with good service. Born and raised on Long Island and growing up constantly dining on fresh-caught fish and shellfish, my husband and I were excited to see if Beacon Corner Bar was going to feel like going home. We started with the hot crab dip and fried calamari appetizers to share. The calamari was delicious, crisp, and light. The crab dip was a bit bland and we found the portion sizes to be a bit small for four of us to share. Full disclosure: I think we arrived hungry. For dinner, we had to have a lobster roll (Connecticut style) because that was truly the reason we chose the spot. My husband and I shared a lobster roll and a Smashburger, both coming with their unique version of thin-sliced and heavily seasoned fries. The lobster roll was good, not great. The lobster meat was fresh, a bit bland, and what is historically a slightly sweet split-top sturdy roll, was basically a hot dog bun - no sweetness, and it did not hold together when dipped in drawn butter. Truthfully, for $30 it was small and we expected more. Restaurant week was such a great way for us to get out and try a new to us restaurant! Beacon Corner Bar had a great deal: three courses for $30. I made a reservation on OpenTable and we were seated right away when we arrived. Our server was Rese and she was great - she told us about their weekly specials including BOGO oysters and live jazz on Thursdays. We ended up arriving for dinner during happy hour, so Nate got a discounted beer. I went with the restaurant week deal with the intention of sharing, and Nate got the lobster roll at the recommendation of our server. We started with an order of the Brussels sprout chips and added an order of the hush puppies. I am not usually a big hush puppy fan, but these were moist, nicely seasoned, and not overly onion-y. The Old Bay-cayenne honey was a unique twist that gave it a savory element that I enjoyed. These came five to an order. The Brussels sprout chips were delicious! Super crispy and seasoned well, with some salty capers and a touch of vinegar. They were a little awkward to eat with a fork. The portion size was great. For my main, I got the walleye basket, which wasn't listed on the Restaurant week menu, but I saw it on the RW website. The fries were unique and really tasty - they were flat slices with skin on. The walleye pieces were nicely sized and perfectly cooked. I really liked the cornmeal coating which made the fish crispy on the outside. I had some of the lobster roll, which was incredible. I was worried it wouldn't be very big for the cost, but it was a generous amount of tender lobster, served with a lot of melted butter. It was decadent and delicious, and I would definitely get that again! Dessert was a brookie - brownie/cookie served in a skillet. It was just okay, but I liked everything else so much I didn't care about dessert. My husband and I have been craving seafood for a couple days and we chose this casual seafood restaurant. Don't let the casualness fool you. This place is delightfully nautical, chic, and warmly decorated. You can totally walk in with flip flops and shorts or walk in dressed up and you will fit in fine. The staff are very friendly and laid back. There is no parking on site so be prepared to park in a garage or in the street. We made reservations at 5:00 on a Thursday for two. We didn't really need the reservations but when we called they suggested making one. We were torn what to get so we got the scallop linguine and Maine lobster roll and just split it between the two of us. The scallops were delicious and perfectly cooked. The dish had a nice lemon zing that cut through the sauce nicely. Each bite had capers and artichoke hearts too. Wonderful! The lobster roll was delicious and probably one of the best I had. Wow. We needed this place in GR and didn't even know it! I loved the ambience, our server was fantastic, and the food was absolutely delicious! My cousin and I decided to stop in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon after getting pedicures down the street. So silky smooth, not at all gritty like some I've had. A very good size portion. I would absolutely order these again! They were also good, though a little dry since I didn't love the sauce. I also wish there were 6 instead of 5, or made larger and had 4. That way you can actually split them. The lobster roll was also very good. Nice, meaty chunks of lobster, and you could pick up the roll without the bread being too soggy and falling apart. And our friends who ordered the oysters devoured them! Connecticut Style means: Toasted New England bun and warm buttered Lobster. The Lobster Roll was excellent. Stuffed with quality lobster. The Crispy Corn Wheels may have been the best corn I've ever had! The Corn is tossed in house seasoning, wow I really want to know what that seasoning is so I can try it on my corn. If they sold the seasoning I'd buy it. The Biscuit was awesome too, so flaky and full of flavor. The person I was with ordered the Scallop Linguine ($25). She stated it was very delicious. It had very large Scallops and lots of capers. The service was good, but could use improvement. It was friendly, but awkward at times. Also a little slow in taking order. We had very high hopes for the Beacon Corner Bar which fell a bit short, but overall a positive experience for a new restaurant. Lobster roll: having been to Maine, and then also experiencing other restaurants in Michigan during the summer when they offer lobster rolls, we were disappointed with this one. Connecticut style often refers to lobster meat that's warm due to the warm butter on it. It's usually pure juicy lobster meat drenched in butter on a toasted buttered bread/roll and that's the beauty of it. As you can see from the photo, the lobster meat looks (and was) a bit dry. The flavor was fine but it just seemed like they tried too hard and overcooked it and all you really need is good lobster meat and warm butter. Portion size is smaller and fits the price point of $22. Fries were tasty, an interesting cut. The bread it was served on was average. Side of coleslaw: a good blend of tangy/citrus and mayonnaise. A bit salty, but overall a decent coleslaw. Clam chowder: Very rich/creamy, filled with bacon, potatoes, clams and several littleneck clams on top. Potatoes were underdone, but the richness of the chowder made up for it. Bowl sized portion was good as a meal given how rich it was. Flourless chocolate cake from San Chez: delicious. Do I think ice cream would be better pairing than whipped cream with it given that it's warm like a lava cake? Yes, but overall delicious and quickly polished off. We thought we could share but given the size, next time I will get my own unless I'm already stuffed :) Overall, the ambiance/service is great and I think that's what you pay for. If you're into getting drinks, the selection looks good. Ultimately, having experienced no frills but delicious lobster rolls at other places - next time we come here, we'll try something different like the baskets. However, I'm not sure we'll try the seafood boil as we've also had hole in the wall/chain type delicious seafood boil for better price points and I fear we will be disappointed if we try it here. Beacon Corner Bar is truly a beacon in downtown GR. Drive an hour. Pay for parking. Walk ten blocks. Whatever it takes, I promise that the effort will be worth it! It is light, airy, and nautical with high ceilings, a colorful octopus wall mural and icy-looking lights that hang from the ceiling held by what look like giant fish hooks. My friend and I took advantage of the Happy Hour specials and ordered half off glasses of wine--light, crisp, and deliciously complimenting our meals. Our sweet and helpful server recommended the peel-and-eat shrimp, but we love Brussels Sprouts, and these did not disappoint! They were crisp and flavorful and the capers added a yummy, addictive saltiness. My friend ordered the shrimp po-boy with fries and enjoyed every bite! She swooned over the seasoned French fries and had me try one. So good! In fact, she asked for a box to take them home to try to figure out how to re-create the flavor profile of that seasoning. Keep me updated, Josie! The whole reason we were there was because I love a well-executed lobster roll (with warm butter--never mayo) and I saw the pictures from this place. The sandwich itself? Honestly I did not plan on coming here, but after everywhere on Ionia having a 45+ minute wait I walked until I found this place and OMG I am so glad I did! They had an actual section on the menu for mocktails, so automatically a win there. I got the sea shanty (ginger beer and pineapple) and my boyfriend got the low down (peach blueberry) and they were great! The hush puppies were brilliantly crisp and warm and fluffy and so good. The cayenne honey was not spicy at all which was a little bit of a bummer but they were still amazing. We were visiting from out of town and passed Beacon and knew we wanted to try it because we love seafood. The ambiance of the restaurant is so inviting. We felt totally comfortable being there in casual clothes. The staff were incredible. Even on a super busy night, they still managed to be kind and conversational making the experience memorable. I had wanted to love this place, but sorry, no. Our server was very uncomfortable in his role and made the visit less than it might have been. The decor was a mish-mosh. The bar, walls, and ceiling, along with a mural of a sea creature, were a contrast to the IKEA-style booths. The food was no better than average. I had oysters, clam chowder, and salmon. None were remarkable, and the chowder was unusual as the shells were tossed into the bowl. We have better options available so next time I'll pass. read more

Pretty disappointed with my experience here. We came on Christmas weekend, so maybe they were having an off day. We had dinner at 5:30 and we were practically the only people in there but service was slow. We were not overly impressed. We had the calamari as an appetizer and it was cold, the cocktail sauce tasted terrible too. Server did not come by to ask how it was. Then we got the seafood boil. We got a full pound of crab and a 1/2 pound of mussels. It was overcooked. The skinny pieces of the crab were VERY dry and the corn on the cob was mush. Server didn't check on us much. We sat with dirty plates for awhile too. We will likely not go back. There are much better seafood places in town. Also, what's with the cheap office chairs as seating? read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. The food is always top notch and everything seems fresh. I usually get the seafood boil and my husband has had multiple items he has enjoyed. I love the ambiance as I well. Service is sometimes a little lacking with people forgetting things or bringing courses too quickly or too slow. Overall, if you love seafood, this is probably the best seafood restaurant in the city. read more
