Great breakfast, the way a home cooked breakfast should be. Chicken and waffles are perfect and they let you swap any waffle out for your plain with no upcharge. The ham and eggs were spot on. Coffee was hot and fresh. Ask for the loaded shoe ( biscuits, cheese, hashbrowns, 2 eggs any way you want, covered in sausage gravy) if really hungry, you will set til lunch or longer. read more

First off, I must say Jimmie's Diner is my all-time favorite. But for convenience and variety, I often try other venues in order of preference: Doo-Dah Diner, The Good Egg, Riverside Cafe, - they all have expectations, but the locally owned Beacon has history and falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. When I was younger, "Dragging Douglas", we'd stop in for a late night omelet to kill the buzz... those days are over, but the tradition of a good greasy breakfast live on. Let's not forget the competition that tries to move in - how the new Jimmie's Egg survives is beyond question - not a good experience there! Other national chains like Denny's and IHop just don't do it for this kid. So about once every other month or so, I hit The Beacon early or to meet a friend/client for breakfast or coffee. I often think a good writer would appreciate the Beacon, because of the atmosphere - which has been nicely updated in the past year (booths, tables, etc.). The waitress, humming out of key to Deep Purple's - Smoke on the Water classic while she refills coffee and the obscureness of the other people lining the walls and various 4-tops....everything from "this is my last 2 bucks" to top level judges and attorneys before they start their day. My mind swirls with opening chapters for a crazy novel. Anyways - the eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes and usually the daily specials are typically spot on. In and out in 20 minutes or you can sit for an hour and enjoy the refills. Nothing less than $10 for the sit down service, so if you want McDonald's - hit the drive-thru! I'd recommend this place. Drawback #1: Update some of the plates and mugs that are chipped - that's sorta gross! Food handling 101. Other than that, it's a "Get what you want" joint. Dine on Yelpers! read more

Maybe they could tell I wasn't a local, maybe they just don't care anymore, but I did not enjoy my breakfast here. I ordered two poached eggs with bacon, homestyle potatoes and toast, and coffee. Well, my coffee mug was obviously dirty, with lipstick still on it and spots of coffee all over the mug. I didn't notice until about halfway through my first cup and thought "f* it, the damage is done" so I didn't mention it. My poached eggs were basically hard boiled and the potatoes were awful. I should have gotten hash browns. Oh well. I ate the eggs, toast and bacon, and I drank the coffee. I will never come back. read more

This place has a cool theme of "light houses" all around the restaurant. They have lunch or breakfast food but they're more known for their breakfast food so that's what I ordered! I got the beacon plate that had eggs, hash browns, muffin, and ham. My cousin ordered their biscuits and gravy with their country potatoes. I honestly didn't think the food was "out of the world" good. It tasted like a breakfast plate that I could have made myself. The ham was a little too dry and hard to chew. The muffin part tasted plain that I decided to dip into my cousins gravy for more flavor. I tried her biscuits and gravy and the biscuits were also dry. I'm not a big fan of the breakfast food for being my first time there. On the bright side, you get A LOT of food for a cheap price. read more

A Wichita institution, the Beacon is the preferred breakfast spot for "real" power Wichitans, and for Tommy Lasorda when he used to visit the city on a regular basis for Lone Star Steakhouse business. People may tell you it's smokey and greasy. Those people have no idea what they are talking about. The place has been smokefree for years and no, it's not greasy. What the Beacon is is friendly- as in, they get to know you so quickly that you feel like a regular by your second visit- and filling. Seriously, consider ordering a half-order of whatever whets your appetites, or share it with someone you're dining with. Even if you eat light, as I do, you'll find the prices very agreeable. Heck, I'll go ahead and say it. The place is cheap. My usual order of two scrambled eggs and a piece of wheat toast dry are a fraction of the cost of the same at the fancier power breakfast spot in NE Wichita. Expect a wait on weekends. read more

I don't know why people don't give this place more love. It's a diner. It's where you go in the morning when you've been doing shots in Old Town until 2 am the night before. You're not going to get a smoked salmon gastrique here. You're going to get pancakes the size of your face. You're going to get hash browns that are crunchy and soft on the inside. You're going to get an old waitress named Flo who takes your order and is kind yet a little lippy. We were out in Old Town all last weekend, and this is where we went the next morning. There was a wait, which is a testament to how good the food is. I had the breakfast burrito, and it was fantastic. It hit the spot and allowed me to rally that morning. This is my favorite place to eat breakfast in Wichita. It is right next door to the Wichita Eagle building (the Beacon was the old afternoon paper of Wichita. Now, there is just the Eagle in the morning). It is usually busy, and has the feeling of a "big city" coffee shop/diner. The staff seems to always be pleasant. As far as the food, I enjoy the breakfast skillet, pancakes, and their omelette selection. They always have a board posted with daily specials. I highly recommend the Beacon. read more

A line out the door is always a great sign. Me and my baby had mommy/daughter day and started off at The Beacon - great start to our day together. She got the biscuits and gravy, which actually had real sausage in it (SCORE) and I got an omelet, I forgot which one. Honestly it doesnt even matter - everything was fantabulous! The menu is typical, nothing too creative - hence only 4 stars. Nonetheless, the service was great, the food was hot, and the environment was relaxing. Plus the prices are very affordable. MUST try this place out if you are in Wichita, Kansas! I wish I could give them more than just 5 stars! Portions here are awesome, and the prices are even better!!! This is as good as it gets.... a diner w/amazing food, quick service, friendly staff, and great prices. I've visited here more than a dozen times when I come visit my family in Wichita, and I have not once left disappointed. If there is a wait/line, don't worry, it moves fast! Everything on the menu is delicious, but a few of my all time favorites are Biscuits & gravy, pancakes/waffles, all the omelets, and their BLT w/turkey sandwich. I'm pretty picky when it comes to the temperature of my food served to me at restaurants...and Beacon has ALWAYS served me fresh/hot food. Given the food, atmosphere, and high regard, you would think The Beacon is quite a bit older than it really is. Opened in 1987 and named for Wichita's second newspaper, back when people cared enough about reading their news on dead trees enough to warrant two newspapers. The owner, Al Harris, had a hobby in art, and wanted to display it on his walls. With respect to the name, much of the art gravitated towards lighthouses despite this type of beacon being completely inappropriate for a landlocked state. Given Wichita's status as the Air Capital of the World, I think a non-directional beacon would be a more fitting type of beacon, but I don't know if radio waves would make good art, especially in the late 1980s. Despite the name incongruities, it has gained a following over the past 23 years, and weekend meals can get crowded. It's not really worth delineating between breakfast and lunch here - as the writing on the windows indicates, The Beacon's bread and butter is breakfast, which is served all day, and is probably for which the restaurant is best known. It is this line of thinking that inspired me to try the Beacon Traditional - two halves of a toasted English muffin topped with two eggs, topped with cheese, topped with a meat, and alongside an impossible amount of either hash browns or home fries. For me, over easy, bacon, and hash browns, respectively. The eggs could have used a little salt, but had nicely runny yolks, which my toasted and buttered muffin helped sop. I like my bacon crispy, and the generous four or five strips I received had a great crunch, so I had that going for me, which was nice. My big issue was with the potatoes - the hash browns were piled onto the grill, and the bottom layer got a nice crust, but the potatoes piled on top didn't see the grill at all, producing a cooked, but the mushy texture that wasn't good at all. And again, they were completely devoid of salt, though the mineral plays a much more important role in the potatoes than they do in the eggs. There's nothing wrong with simple diner food, but there's an expected tradeoff that the lack of creativity comes with a product that's expertly prepared. I didn't see that in The Beacon's flagship dish, and I think in the future I'll avoid the crowds and go to Brint's. read more

Raving about a hole in the wall will get you everywhere with me. After hitting around the 20 hour mark, I would've eaten anything. Others have given you a brief history of this place however, no one mentioned that the art is for sale. Keep your hands off that 1970's woods painting, it's mine. Sadly, I saw the breakfast burrito offered AFTER I had ordered my biscuits and gravy. Regardless, I was excited to plow into the pallate of brown and white. (I ordered a single pancake too.) The country potatoes were the best part, the B & G could have been a little more salty. The pancake was really fluffy and the breakfast dessert it should be. My colleagues got the Beacon special, in addition to various egg and meat dishes with sides of toast. Not sure if I came even close to attacking much of it because the food coma I was placed in wiped my memory of that part. The service was great, I will say too that it does get chili in there. The coffee is mostly for hand warming purposes, even though I had 3 cups. You can buy a coffee cup to commemorate your visit, I suggest you at least give it a try. read more

Nothing special. When asked what they do well, the server did not have an answer. The food was fine, typically breakfast food, standard taste and flavor, and nothing creative from the menu. Servers seemed overly stressed even though the restaurant was mildly busy. I had to wait until my meal was basically gone to get a water refill. We had gone for brunch the other day & I had the Pattymelt. Burger on RYE bread (RYE IS DELISHHHH) with melted swiss Cheese. Served with a side, which i just had a salad. It was okay again. Greasy Food Decent to Good Service This has been a long time favorite for locals in Wichita Kansas. I have never understood why, other than the fact that it has been there for so long and its located downtown, where until recently, they had no competition in that area. The food has no presentation qualities, is seasonless, unhealthy and is cheap because it is cheap food. You could go to a more upscale breakfast spot in town and pay just a few dollars more and have the best. So, in other words, I have no idea how this place stays in business other than the fact that the baby boomer generation had a lack of breakfast options when growing up in Wichita and have continued a tradition by taking their children there to enjoy the "comfort food" that they serve. Then at this point, Generations X & Y have adopted the idea that they serve good food. I most often find that the X & Y's visit this spot after a long night of drinking because you definitely don't have to dress up at this establishment. It is dingy and needs a severe remodeling job. The artwork on the walls are quite tacky and tasteless. This is NOT a place to see artwork in Wichita Kansas. read more

I genuinely feel bad for giving this place a bad review - but it's just not that great. The bf and I stopped in for a late Friday brunch a couple of weeks back. We were both a little disappointed with the lack of variety on the menu. Of course, they had the greasy staples you find at all breakfast places - friend eggs, bacon, pancakes, biscuits & gravy...but I wanted something different! I guess I was in the wrong place for this! I ended up settling on an English muffin and two sunny side up eggs. I know...yawn.... The bf ordered the veggie omelet - and added turkey. Yea, we're a little different... I felt like the service could have been better. Again, I feel bad for saying this, but this place could really use an update in décor. I felt like I was eating at my grandma's house. Good service for sure. The waffles are surprisingly good. My friend got the blueberry French toast and can't stop talking about how good it it. Home potatoes are good, could use more salt and pepper and be fried crispier. The consistency was very soft, almost mashed. The chicken fried chicken was cooked perfectly. If you are like me and feel the burning desire to taste that everywhere they have it, definitely give it a shot. My only other gripe is the coffee. You expect bold and hot and both times I've been here it's lukewarm and so so mild. Either a really cheap brand, or a very light roast. That could use some work, but the waitresses and chicken fried chicken are so good it made me forget the so so coffee momentarily. read more

Walls are decorated with lighthouse-themed artwork -- pretty amusing when you remember that you're sitting in Wichita Kansas. I came here on a Saturday morning and it was pretty busy. It was hard for us to find parking, but once we got inside we probably waited less than 5 minutes. I ordered the philly steak omelete. While the portion looked large, there was barely any meat in my omelete. I enjoyed the hashbrowns, however, my fiance said they were too greasy for him. Was able to go here on a busy Sunday morning for bunch. This place is down to earth and everyone is so friendly even when it's wall to wall packed you. The waitress we had even got a cinnamon-roll made just for my mom (the were out) due to it being her birthday and had everyone sing to her. Asked how long the wait was, was told 15 minutes, after a literal hour of watching people that came in after us get seated, while standing in the tiny doorway we were seated. 10 minutes later the waitress came to order our drinks and food at the same time. One of us received water with something floating in it, and when he asked for another water the waitress did not take the water away (he even held the cup up to her) so it sat on the table the entire time. 32 minutes later we received our pre-packaged unseasoned freshly thawed food. I do not recommend this place, I am going to get food on the way home because on top of all that- my bacon cheeseburger and fries was not in the slightest but filling. The Beacon has the best breakfast in Wichita! Super delicious, very fair priced, and a great staff. The food here is much better than most of the more popular breakfast joints in town, and it's a great atmosphere too. Service is prompt and the food is always hot! The only downside is the location. Parking can be hard to find, because there's not enough of it, but even if you can't park on site, you won't have to walk far. I've never had to wait more than maybe 10 minutes even when they were super busy. The Beacon is one of my favorites! read more
