After moving to a new place, then braving the drive back north to clean my old apartment before surrendering my keys, I was ravenous. Unfortunately, allowing myself to get all worked up about some banh mi from Nhu Lan, I encountered the saddest thing all day: IT WAS CLOSED. Ugh. So I decided to hit up my usual spot for bagels for a sandwich. I LOVE the bagels, they make a kick-ass iced coffee, and I knew I'd had a pretty delightful Cuban from here before, so I figured that this just might take the place of my grilled pork and an avocado bubble tea. One home on the range and a sparkling water later (consumed on the now-clean floor of my old empty apartment), I was STUFFED. The multigrain bread was toasted to perfection, and my sandwich was piled high with turkey, cheddar, spinach, tomatoes, red onion and some mayo. (I'm usually a "no mayo" kinda girl these days, but moving day, like vacation, is always a free day, diets be damned!) Lovely. And it got me through the day. This is the epitome of what the neighborhood coffee shop should be (in my humble opinion). It is run by a friendly staff of folks who enjoy their jobs and interacting with the community. This isn't your average Starbucks, and not that there is anything wrong with Starbucks either. But the coffee you'll find here is made the natural way and traded at fair market prices. And while I don't think that makes the coffee any better, if you're the guilt ridden type, you can drink this joe knowing that no puppies were kicked nor were children made homeless in the process. All joking aside, they can also make speciality coffee drinks here as well. Do you know what a Cortado is? Me either! But I got one in NYC once and the only other place I've ever been that makes one is Beans and Bagels. Look I don't know any of you who will read this review, but I do believe that Beans and Bagels has a little something for you. Veggisaur menu? They got you! Do-rite-Donuts your thing? They got you! Just want a cup of black coffee before you hop on the train... eh sorry, that don't do that well. I'm joking of course. What the heck? Isn't this place supposed to be a friendly local coffee & bagel breakfast place? Apparently not, bad business practice and garbage service. I went at 10:38 am on a Tuesday only to be told by the frail, snarky, flannel wearing, over sized skull cap wearing hipster the kitchen is closed. And he didn't say, oh sorry the kitchen is closed, he pointed to the door in the most smug manner & and smugly said, kitchen is closed is says right there on the door. Really?! So bad service. After that I didn't even grab just a bagel to go. They are only open till 3:30 to begin with why wouldn't ya serve breakfast while you're open? If I wanted to be denied breakfast I would have gone to corporate McDonald's. But it's their business, to each their own. I just hate that I will not be supporting this local business. read more

The place has generally good quality food and delivers this soundly. The challenge however is that they try to have a reputation for being no nonsense at the cashier stand or when ordering. The staff on occasion have pretentious attitudes which I think is what they are shooting for. If you don't care about this then it's a good place to frequent for the mornings as I can't speak to their lunch hour menu or service. Also disappointed by the set-up of no bathrooms because if you ask be prepare to get a no or only if the kitchen staff has no open food containers. read more

The best chocolate croissant in the city (no, really)... But very spotty service. Beans & Bagels is just around the corner, and I'd love to go there more often. But, my rating above is tied directly to their spotty service record. They've made great strides in getting the surly staff away from the register, but it often takes forever to get your order. Perhaps they need more kitchen staff, or just need to light a fire under the cook. That said, they REALLY DO have the best chocolate croissants in the city. They're flaky on the outside, and chewy/eggy/buttery in the middle. I simply won't buy from anyone else now. Their other menu items, whether pastries or sandwiches, are also really great. So, if they can keep their friendlier staff, and get the kitchen motivated, I'd definitely change my tune. I have noticed a truly concerted effort to improve the customer service here. They've listened to the feedback and are quite pleasant now. I've always enjoyed the coffee, bagels, and donuts. The trick is get out of bed, get to B and B, and get your BREAKFAST. Coming here at 11 am for brunch is a mistake, you missed out. The early bird gets the worm. I come here after I drop the kids off at school, and never have an issue with selection. Lastly, this place has a dynamic "it" factor that I love. It's original, hip, fun, and feels like a true neighborhood coffee shop. It has an unmistakeable identity that suits our neighborhood perfectly. read more

Locally sourced products? Check. Can they make a latte? Check. Great neighborhood location? Check. Friendly staff and excellent customer service? ...Not so much. While I love supporting local business, even Starbucks finds the opportunity to crack a smile or make you feel welcome. I go to Beans & Bagels often because it's convenient for my morning commute. Never once have I been greeted with a simple "Hello" or even a smile. The owner, I suspect he is at least, is the worst. Always grumpy and uninterested in making you feel welcome. It's like making a coffee for you is such an inconvenience. In general, everyone working there seems miserable and uninterested in their job. I've purposely stayed clear of this place from time to time because of the customer service. If I'm in serious need of a coffee, I'll probably head back but with seriously low expectations. read more

Unfortunately this cafe has gone way downhill in terms of food, service and worst of all, coffee. Had quite possibly THE worst iced coffee I've ever had this weekend, which is no mean feat. It completely lacked ice and tasted like week old filter coffee watered down. Just awful and undrinkable. The food selection leaves a lot of be desired. A random selection of donuts and a menu board covered in blacked out items. Prior to the last visit I had pretty rude service from the staff, and the coffee was mediocre at best. I tried to ignore it and kept going back thinking it was a one off, but unfortunately it isn't. I spent a lot of time there summer 2014 when there used to be lines out the door but this year its a completely different place. And no more pastries :( Sad really. read more

First off, let me say I hate to write this review. I love Lincoln Square and the Rockwell business district, and I've had decent experiences at Beans & Bagels in the past. Last Saturday, however, I experienced a heinous manifestation of the shop's legendary hipster apathy. The two 20ish guys I see there on a regular basis are usually pleasant, but the mid-30s angry mustache man is, well, angry. My boyfriend asked for an egg sandwich at 11:30, and he pulled the classic "we only have egg sandwiches until 11:00" bit. We all know the eggs are still sitting in the back (in PLAIN SIGHT), so he grudgingly agrees to make one after a few surly looks and labored sighs. I ordered a latte and a sandwich to eat there. He gave me a lid with a hole, and I proceeded to spill the latte all over my laptop. He also put our sandwiches in a to-go bag, and literally threw them on our table, which was sticky and covered with crumbs. Don't get me wrong--the sandwiches are delicious, the bagels up to par, and the drinks fairly tasty. That is, if you can get them without the "how dare you ask me to serve you" attitude. Also, their WIFI requires a network key, which is nowhere to be found (and don't try asking the guys behind the counter for it). When you're a coffee shop with free WIFI and I've hauled my laptop and LSAT study books down the block, you damn well deliver on your WIFI promises. I'll probably continue to go occasionally, as I live around the corner. For any serious coffee shop trips where more than a couple of dollars are involved, I'll be heading to the square for some Julius Meinl or Cafe Neo where I can be treated like a customer rather than a nuisance. read more

Yeah, sometimes the service is slow. Who gives a crap. The people are cool, they play good music, and the product is always tasty. The bagels are so freaking good, and I have yet to find a salt bagel anywhere else in this city. Salt bagels! So bad for you! So tasty to eat with veggie cream cheese! And the sandwiches are tasty, too -- the Smokin' Winchester is my favorite, but watch out for all those onions. They brew & sell Metropolis coffee, and damn, those're some good beans. I only ever get a regular coffee, but I'm sure their fancy/espresso-based drinks are delicious as well. Bonus points for having free wireless that reaches the patio, so during the non-winter seasons, you can chill out with your iced coffee & laptop in the sun. This isn't Dunkin' people. They are not in the back microwaving pre made "egg" sandwiches. They are MAKING fresh beautiful never disappointing quality FOOD; real food not food flavored substance. If you don't like waiting please see your self to the nearest drive thru, the line can be long sometimes so you'll be helping me. This place is amazing! When I was first walking by this place I thought that it was cool that a place would serve all kinds of high protein beans with high carb stuff like bagels. But I never went in cause I didn't think that I'd like a bagel with black bleans. Then about three months later I was telling that to my boyfriend and he looked at me like I was stupid and said that they meant coffee beans. Now that I've finally gone in here, it's pretty good. I like to get a bagel with flavored cream cheese and they fill that niche. Their new full-service breakfast addition seems to have kind of limited hours, but it was pretty tasty went I went there before...plus they have lots of vegetaran options. One negative was that the decaf coffee was really bad. It tasted burnt and like it had been sitting out overnight. When I asked for a new cup, they gave me one...and it was still bad and they said that that was the way it was supposed to taste...ick. There are few obstacles to overcome in your enjoyment of Beans and Bagels. First- to get to the seating area one must walk outside and in to the unlabeled next door. Your second task- going to the bathroom. For whatever reason you have to walk back through the kitchen to get to it. It feels weird. The third task- getting on the free wifi. This one involves a simple question to the barista asking for the password. It's often something memorable from childhood, like the number to Empire Carpets. This Beans and Bagels is RIGHT off the Brown Line-Rockwell stop towards Lawrence. The employees here were nice and brief. They brought my bagel out to me even though I was hiding in the corner with my computer. This location is small with hardly any seating. The seating is built against the wall with rickety small wooden tables, like a foot by foot. Free WiFi with no password and spotty connection. I was there for a few hours with not one iota of bugging from the staff. If you want some specific breakfast food, come here early. There were only two kinds of bagels here at noon. read more

Yeah, the food is fine, the coffee is fine, the service is beyond incompetence. It's a bunch of friggin' morons working here. Today, ordered two bagel sandwiches. One was the special of the day, the other was this doozy of an order: roast beef, chedder, spinach, mayo. I know, crazy hard, right? Well, after waiting for 25 minutes, they come out with my order, "here's your special and the roasted red pepper". Excuse me? That's supposed to be roast beef. Then the two geniuses behind the counter get into this discussion - IDIOT 1 - You put RB on here, I thought that meant roasted red pepper. IDIOT 2 - Why would RB mean red pepper. Wouldn't that be RP? IDIOT 1 - Yeah, you put RB, so I thought that meant roasted red pepper. So after apologizing, she says it will be just a moment while they fix that. Annoying. Until 3 more minutes later when they came back to tell me that they were out of roast beef. What? It took you HALF A GD HOUR to realize you were out of roast beef? Went here about a week ago. Just popped in to get some coffee and maybe a bite to eat. It's the closest coffee shop from my place so I was really hoping to like it here. THEY WON'T SELL YOU ESPRESSO TO GO. Why? Snarky answer is that they are illogical pretentious a$$holes intent on providing you with your very own scene out of Five Easy Pieces but here are the answers I got: 1. It wastes the 8oz cup. So, let's think about this one for a minute. The drink I want (a double espresso), because it isn't more voluminous, is "wasteful", but adding 4oz of water to it to make an Americano that do I not want and frankly, have at home with better coffee than they have, somehow makes that not wasteful. Let that sink in. 2. The paper cup ruins the integrity of the drink. Okay. So that at least explains why they don't just buy the small paper cups like every decent takeaway espresso bar from Seattle to Rome does. But shouldn't I be the arbiter of whether I want to take that oh so important first-world-problem chance? And so are they also then saying that their Americano and every other drink they offer in a paper cup is sub-par? And that their espresso is better than all the other bars that respect their customers (it isn't)? Anyway. Just walk a block over to the Green Post. Great ambiance, service, and choices. read more

The smoothies are really tasty and actually use real fruit (my favorite is the Rockwell Pucker). There are a surprising amount of sandwiches for a bagel place (my favorite is the Ferdinand). And I also appreciate that there's more than just cream cheese offered to schmear on the bagels (a surprisingly good combo was the onion bagel with hummus). Also, the baked goods, like the brownies, are very, very tasty. Why this place doesn't get 4 or 5 stars is this: like others have said, the workers have serious attitudes. I think they're trying to turn it into a hipster only zone, so they're slow and rude with anyone who isn't, which is nonsense, especially considering the amount of families that live around there and come in on the weekends. Also, again, I will echo another comment: sometimes they blast very unfitting music. I'm okay with hipster indie music, but when I'm there, even if I get my order to go, I like to sit down with the Reader or the Onion and wait for my order to come up. I can't really concentrate when I'm listening to loud music. This hasn't happened all the time, just a few times, so I'm not going to take away a star for that. read more

Forest Gump said "Life is like a box of chocolates, because you never know what you're going to get." Well, this is indeed true with the employees, and wait time, at Beans & Bagels. I have a love-hate relationship with this place, and always get a sick feeling in my gut when walking here to get food or coffee. Will I get a human that speaks, makes eye contact, and is courteous; or, will I get some plaid shirt wearing hipster who thinks being a barista entitles him the right to be a prick? Will I have to wait 15 minutes simply for a cup of the great Metropolis coffee? You really never know... Now, why 4 stars, you ask? Well, I must admit, the food is really good. Albeit not healthy, it really is quite tasty, and reasonably priced. BUT-the coffee is really the main reason why I continue to come here. Granted, this doesn't come easy, and without sacrifice, because the layout of this place sucks, and is too small in size for a handful of midgets. Nevertheless, I continue to endure getting squeezed in like a sardine, in order to get my fix of Metropolis coffee. The love of Metropolis coffee will continue, and the hate for the attitude and long lines will most likely remain as well. I find this place to be hilarious, especially lately. I think they're going on 2/3+ months with no 'chef' during the week. If you come during the week expect a bagel that they refuse to cut (apparently these hipsters are not qualified to cut them), a plastic knife and cream cheese on the side, oh and no toasting. How hard can it be to cut and toast a bagel? You don't need a chef to do this. Everyone comments about they're bagels, but they actually don't make them. They're ordered from Bagel and Bialey. And the best part, they're ordering sucks so bad! By the time it's 8:30am on Saturday/Sunday, they're actually selling out of bagels. Why don't you order more?! It's happened about 8x now where I've placed my order and am patiently waiting (takes 15+ minutes to receive a bagel with cream cheese) and they'll come out and say 'oh sorry we just sold out of this'. There's only one guy there who's actually friendly and smiles. The rest are too cool for work hipsters that are unfriendly, unwelcoming and rude to every customer who says that they're kitchen isn't open. We've actually stopped coming here because they're service pretty much does suck, especially for a product that you can find at a handful of other bagel places. read more

I used to live down the street from Beans & Bagels, and my brother now lives relatively close. When I'm in Chicago, this is still my place for coffee and a croissant on the go. I prefer Metropolis to anything else I can get in Chicago, and I've never had a bad cup here. The pastries, as others have mentioned, are also top notch. My only wish is that they stayed open later hours. There have been times I've come by late afternoon (based on the hours I found here on Yelp actually), and the chairs were already up and lights off. I suppose one can't expect a neighborhood cafe to lose money staying open late for relatively few people. And one can't trust the store hours they find on websites not sponsored by the business. When this happens, I make my way over to The Grind, a cafe that rivals my affinity for this one. And for all of you supposedly getting bad service here, you probably don't tip well enough or at all. I tip $1 on every medium or large drip I buy, and the baristas have always been extremely cool to me. I know many disagree with my sense of entitlement regarding servers, but that is the reality - they obviously aren't obliged to serve you with a smile. I suppose you could always just brew your own coffee at home. The pleasant experience I have at this cafe is worth the $1 per visit to me. read more

Basically your neighborhood coffee shop, but this one serves a variety of midwestern based roasters (each of whom have some attention to the needs of their underpinning farmers) and has fancy homemade pastries that are quite well regarded. Yes, some will have kvetched about the service - I've never had an issue. And yes, others will note that the seating can be a bit chaotic (but you'll end up finding a place, most days). Okay, first off, figuring out who does what in this joint is like trying to understand how the great pyramids were built. Seriously, there don't seem to be any set procedures, which makes for a verrrrrry long wait for a simple coffee. That annoys me. Speaking of coffee, it's pretty tasty, as it's metropolis. Unfortunately, I'm not sure it's worth the wait. Why do I give my order to one person, who just listens to it, then another who takes the order, while I'm standing in front of the register, and then I have to repeat myself a third time to be rung up? The bagels are decent, nothing special, but their list of combinations for sandwiches is impressive. I go because it's close, not because it rocks my world. I used to live by the Montrose outlet, and yeah, they do have some tasty sandwiches and delicious coffee. Beans are from Metropolis, so how can you go wrong there? (Answer: you can't.) But that being as it may, the service... Oh, the service. Apparently food-service or any sort of point-of-sale experience are not necessary to work there. There's minimal organization, so what should be a fairly efficient in-and-out operation becomes a hectic wait. Orders appear to be taken in order, but after that, they seem to be filled arbitrarily. People who order two behind me get theirs before either of us. Suddenly the guy getting coffee is making bagel sandwiches (which are good, by the way). Oh, someone else is serving coffee. No wait, he's getting something out of the kitchen. Who's that guy? Is he getting someone's coffee? No, no... just talking to the coffee-cum-sandwich guy. The gf and I placed orders one after another. Both iced coffees, both peanut butter variations on toasted bagels. While they start on drinks for the people behind me, she gets her sandwich made and coffee poured. Then, a little later, I get my sandwich. Then I wait for my coffee. And wait. And wait. Finally I have to go ask, which triggers one person to ask another to ask another to get my iced coffee. Points for: coffee, food quality (satisfactory), location, and fast free wi-fi. I am a huge fan of this place. The coffee is great: usually a light and dark roast option. The decaf is also really good. The bagels are heavenly and the new pastry chef is delivering great croissants. This is my go to spot for morning coffee for the commute or weekend pastries or bagels for a treat. Update and pro-tip: If you need to make a larger order, you will need to pre-order, since they don't make a lot of extra (anti-food-waste, which is great). Oh, Beans and Bagels. I've lived in the neighborhood for years and operating a small business myself, I find myself friends with a lot of the business owners and employees in the neighborhood. Not this place. I also wonder why I always tip them at B+B because I've gotten: sneers, comments made about what I have ordered, (while I was standing there) listened to the employees make comments about other people, and I have waited 30min for a bagel or came home with the wrong order. My boyfriend has completely stopped going there after they messed up his order a few times in a row, but being a loyal customer, I kept going. Now I am joining him. It's not like we would be customers they would hate either, which means they give bad service to all their customers hipster or not. I love trying to support independent shops and I do love their coffee/food, but it is worth it to walk to Lincoln Square and go to The Grind. read more

Interesting ... first comes to mind. On a search for Lox sandwich and yelp said this was the closest... I usually love going to new places but this space was -- definitely out of the ordinary. I did other my sandwich which was great personally, but the out of ordinary thing was u have to go into one storefront ... place your order run back out.... find the door to the next storefront and it's a tabled spot. But it's not like it's set up as a restaurant mmmmmm felt more like a camping inside to me... community bench seating on one side( I'm drawing this from memory) and little tables on the other. Problem was it was a visit in the winter so when that door opened, the entire room temp dropped fast. Was a different experience like I said not bad or good just ----different. The saving grace of Beans and Bagels is that the food is actually quite tasty, if occasionally messy to eat. Though my meals here have been limited to breakfast, I have been relatively pleased with the results. The breakfast bagel is good and the regular bagel with cream cheese is tasty (though sloppily made). I must, however, reinforce the somewhat negative experience with the service. The dudes who work at Beans and Bagels are laid back. Laid back to the point of relaxation that makes me feel like I'm a bit of a hassle. Once a bagel was made for me during an especially crowded time and it took about 15 minutes to actually receive the bagel which had been waiting for me since I had reordered it and it sat languishing behind the counter after one of said dudes announced my order in such a whisper that he must have thought we had made such a special connection during my order that I'd be tuned in to his voice. Ugh. Same bad experience two weeks in a row, I am done with this place. I have a really adverse reaction to eggs - as in, I will throw up on their floor if I eat one. BF & I went in last weekend on our way out, & I ordered a bagel with cheddar & bacon ONLY, & stressed no egg, to dine in. Some 15 minutes later, our bagels showed up, both with egg. Went back to the counter to get the order corrected, which didn't arrive until the BF was done with his (I told him to go ahead & eat while it was still hot). BF went in for pickup yesterday, having ordered the exact same thing for me. He even said that eggs make me sick & that it needed to have no egg. He walked back home & even mentioned to me that he was glad he called in ahead b/c he heard them say that they ran out of eggs, but he got egg on his since he called before they ran out. I opened mine up, & there were eggs on it. So not only am I completely annoyed, but someone who WANTED egg didn't get one. So the wonderful BF went BACK, having not yet eaten his, & got the money back for my sandwich before coming home to eat his now cold sandwich (he insisted on going since he's the one who picked it up). If you can't accommodate "special" orders, then you shouldn't take them in the first place. Even Dunkin Donuts makes these for me all the time without issue. read more

Their espresso is a bit strong for me... verging on bitter. Other things I've tried have been good though. Good enough to warrant 3 stars instead of 1 for customer service. It's an awesome location for a coffee shop and it's the only one I pass when walking to the Rockwell Station... but, I actually hesitate going in because the times I've been there the cashiers have looked completely unapproachable. I feel like if I say something wrong I'm in for a beat down. ... except for the one time I went in with a friend... who's a girl and up there on the hotness scale. I've lived in the neighborhood for four years and come here pretty often. The location is super convenient, and they have good coffee and pastries, and pretty interesting food specials. However, this place seriously needs to get it together. Every time I come here, they are slow as molasses. Getting an untoasted bagel to go has taken as long as 10 minutes. In my most recent experience, I waited 15 minutes for my order, finally asked how much longer the wait would be and was greeted with a blank stare and a "I'm not sure, sorry, what did you order?" from the same person who had taken my order. It wasn't even busy in there - I was the only person waiting for food. As much as I like that this place exists, I will only go there if I have plenty of time to spare and am not already hungry. Beans and Bagels has excellent food, drip coffee, and whole bean. The staff members are extremely friendly and efficient. However, my only qualm is that my cold brew is filled almost completely with ice after politely asking for light ice when I order... this is pretty upsetting because I spend $5 every single day, tip well, and always order the same thing. Not to mention, I regularly buy food and whole bean there. At one point, after ordering it the way I usually do, I was told "you're going to get the same amount of coffee." I was in the barista business for 10 years and have always appreciated it when my customers gave me feedback in person, rather than on social media. Firstly, the coffee is fantastic. Not sure what brand it is, but it's among the best I've found in the city. The bagels are similarly excellent, and the variety of homemade cream cheese options is extensive and delicious: honey almond, cranberry walnut, veggie, chives, et al. But the breakfast sandwiches are very dry, and overpriced, as are the fresh fruit cups. Moreover, as previous Yelpers have noted, the place is staffed by a collection of hipsters who don't always (OK, hardly ever) appear enthused to help you. That can be a bit off-putting. Also, there is virtually no room to stand in line to order or to wait while your order is prepared. The place is very popular among neighborhood 30-somethings and their kids, so it fills up fast. Again, I'm just not a people person before I've had my morning joe, so I could do without the proximity of bodies. The adjoining indoor seating area is smallish, but at least there is room between the tables. The outdoor patio on Leland is better. This place probably deserves 4.5 stars, but I'm rounding down. Still, try their bagels and coffee. You won't be disappointed. read more
