After having lunch with a family friend, who was visiting from out of town, we were in the mood for something sweet. As I searched for a place, I came across Beard Papa's and thought this was the perfect sweet treat to have post-meal. When I arrived, it was fairly busy, but the employees were fast and efficient. From the moment I walked through the door, I loved the bright interior and sweet aroma in the air. I was also able to see employees take out fresh batches from the oven, so I appreciate how the eclairs are cooked to order. But, I recommend visiting at an earlier time on the weekend because they did run out of certain shell flavors on a Sunday afternoon. However, I was pleased with the cream puff I customized. I ordered an eclair covered with a Green Tea shell filled with chocolate. I liked how the Green Tea flavor was subtle and not overpowering. The cream puff was flaky, fluffy, and the flavor and texture of the chocolate filling was a pleasant surprise. The consistency of the chocolate filling reminded me of a frozen custard. Also, my family friend tried the Ube shell and Ube filling which is a Filipino purple yam and mentioned they would order it again. Let's start with the pros, the puffs are delicious!!! I loved each and every flavor, but man was the original puff with great tea filling super good!!! I loved the honey flavor as well, but the vanilla custard was a tad too sweet when paired with that one specifically. I wish I got it with green tea filling as well. The cons are that the wait was much too long for only five puffs. They got two of my puffs, both being the dark chocolate, wrong. I asked for vanilla and green tea filling and they didn't add filling to EITHER of the buns. I was super disappointed when I realized this since..again, I waited about an hour and a half for them. :( I would've went back if not for the fact that I was already in the car ready to go home. We went to the store opening this Saturday. It was a long line. My husband and I was so thrilled to see Beard Papa's opening in Concord becuase all of other store locations are so far from us. As we all know that Beard Papa's has the fresh and best creme puff, and they are known for the fresh and amazing creme filling. I personally love it and belive no one else could duplicate it. Although we had to stay in line for 3 hours, I think it's all worth it based on my previous experience with this wonderful puff shop. Then, the speachless comes in. I understood regarding inexperience staff with unfamiliar cashier system operation issue on the promotion. Buy 5 get 1 free. We asked to buy 10, and cashier said 1 free puff, right? I was like 5+5=10, then there were should be 2. Another thing is the Instragram adversting is missleading. They advised on Instragram saying you will get a free puff when you purchase one. In my understanding, it's buy one get one free. However, I didn't keep a screenshot of it. So I didn't bring it up to the store. But, I see someone posted a picture of it. Just to proof my point that I didn't make it up. It's all okay as long as the puff is okay. But the puff creme filling was not as good as previous one I had from other store location. The SFO shop permanently closed so I went out of my way to go to this location as I remembered the cream puffs being really good. The server was clearly very confused and I don't understand why since the order was simply... 4 chocolate, 2 vanilla and 2 ube filled cream puffs in two separate boxes. It took an unnecessary long time to place the order as I had to repeat myself while she also repeatedly kept punching in the order. I even offered to just place and pay for two separate orders if that would make it easier but she declined. Lucky for her there were no other customers in the shop or the poor thing would be even more flustered. Finally left the store with the goodies, lo and behold, all I got were chocolate! We saw this place was open after grabbing lunch at Fresh Tray and decided to give it a try. It was only open for about a week so we made it in before the line backed up. Service was pretty quick and we received our order within 10 mins. We never had cream puffs before aside from the mini frozen ones from baby showers so we weren't sure what to expect. The place smells sweet & amazing. We chose a strawberry & cookies n cream puff with vanilla custard and (2) crème brûlée puffs that were a limited flavor. My son loved his cookies and cream. The strawberry was a bit too sweet for my daughter's liking. I think a plain puff with custard would have been good. The creme brûlée actually tasted like a plain puff with filling although it didn't have the same oomph as a filled puff. Overall it was good, not fantastic. We stumbled pass this cute little shop while walking around the Santos Plaza. Basically, the offer "cream puffs" where you get to choose the filling and the topping. (It becomes an "eclair" if you get a topping.) I love cream puffs so I went with no topping and vanilla filling. DH got the ube topping with ube filling. The shell is a bit crunchier than a traditional cream puff. Both were very good, with neither being overly sweet. I'm not a fan of super sweet desserts so these were right up my alley. For my personal tastes, I don't think the toppings are necessary. Just the shell itself with a filling hits the spot. read more

We have always enjoyed Beard Papa's for dessert but I am sad to say we will not be returning. Went for dessert with our toddler and had a bathroom emergency in which our newly potty trained little one needed to use the restroom. They have a bathroom for customers, but they refused to let her use it even though we made a purchase, and we had to leave to find one elsewhere. My thought it they had just cleaned it and wanted to close since it was around closing time. Didn't seem like a family friendly establishment and will not be returning. read more

There is that little crunch of the (not soggy) crust on the perfectly baked choux pastry, and then the luscious real vanilla crème that has the perfect body, filling your mouth with awesome goodness. The sweet cream has a great foil with the dark chocolate, all in all making a wonderful experience. We are so lucky to have a Beard Papas here in the East Bay cause these crème puffs are worth traveling miles for. OMG! I think I have found my new favorite dessert at Beard Papa's in Todas Santos in Concord! I blame this on my girlfriend, Alice, who had raved about them. Beard Papa's was originally founded in 1999 in Japan, and they make the best darn cream puffs/eclairs I have ever had! Why did it take them so long to bring this evil deliciousness to our area? I had wanted to go to the grand opening, but I heard hundreds of people were in line, so I opted to wait until a week ago. I have to say the oreo cookie crumble and the honey butter were my favorites, but everything I tried was so good! I had both with vanilla filling, but green tea and chocolate are also available. I loved going to their location in SF, so I was even more excited that they were closer to where I lived. The first time we went, the line was too long so we didn't stay. Two days later, my amazing husband left work early to get there 30 minutes before opening. He said there were only 5 people ahead of him. We purchased 10 cream puffs: 2 Oreo with chocolate filling, 2 matcha with matcha filling and 4 creme brulee with vanilla filling. When he got home and I picked up the first one, it looked smaller than the ones in SF. The taste however, was the same. The puff had a nice crispy outer layer but was light inside. The pastry creams were not overly sweet either. The only gripe I had was the creme brulee ones must not have set properly because the it was melting off despite the cream puffs being cold. For those who have not tried it, a word of advice. If you are not going to eat them right away, it is better to store them in the freezer vs the fridge. In the fridge they get soggy from the cream. Storing it in the freezer keeps it from getting soggy. read more

I saw a long line and I felt happy we have so many local people to support their business, but at the same time, I read a not of bad reviews and they said they are never going back. They've been open for a few days now and people don't get that cream puffs take a while to make and it's not easy to make so that's definitely a factor into the long waits. It's not like frying chicken nuggets lol. On the flip side, they only have one POS and one station to bag and box them which definitely plays a SIGNIFICANT role into why they can't meet their demand in these busy days. One POS system means the kitchen is only receiving one order at a time so they can't fill an order if the traffic jam is happening at the register. Secondly, if orders are in queue and ready to be given to the customer, it hits the second traffic jam, the packing station. If a coworker is boxing up an order (which takes forever because the box has to be assembled and napkins etc) the employee with filled cream puffs then has to wait. The staff is SUPER NICE and very appreciative of everyone's patience. Give these people a break. It hasn't been a week, cream puffs take forever to make, and like any new business, it'll take a few days to sort out logistical issues. They'll hit their groove soon. Good luck team!!! read more

New dessert place in town. Cream puffs! The day I went was a Saturday afternoon at 3pm, out of the special cream puff which was the salted cameral. Also noted they only had vanilla filling. I got all the flavors they had to offer that day. They had matcha, cookie n creams, chocolate, plain & vanilla. I got 2 of each flavor, that cost me $43. So doing the math they run for around $3.50 to $4 each. I especially liked the matcha out of all the flavors. Though they weren't like to die for. They are okay. Definitely not like mouth watering delicious. I brought 10 to share with my family. My mom and husband didn't care much for them. They though they were too plain even with the multiple flavors. I probably won't come back unless they have new filling flavors too try. Overall, give them a chance at least once but probably once is good enough. read more

I've tried them before in their SF location and was looking forward to having something closer to home. I was visiting the downtown Concord farmer's market on Tuesday and decided to grab a cream puff on my way out. Seemed like this was a perfect time because there was no one there and I was in and out quickly. For this trip I ordered the green tea shell with ube filling and what a yummy combo, the colors also reminded me of the hulk lol. They have quite a bit of different shell and fillings options so you are bound to find something that you'd like. Once I ordered it was made right then and was ready to eat. The cream puff itself is not that sweet, which I enjoyed. This could have very well been a sugar overload but I feel like they got the right combo where I have that bit of sweet and can still taste the flavors. I happened to go in when they first opened on a Saturday morning and lucked out with being fourth in line. They were friendly, answered questions, not standing around and working the best they could to get orders out. Orders are made when placed, so it's going to take time. Be patient! I was so excited to see there was a Beard Papa closer than San Francisco. Once you walk in you're hit with the aroma of sugar and baked deliciousness. Then you see puffs of pastries ready to be filled with decadent flavored cream. You have your choice of original, chocolate, matcha and my favorite: ube. I know the place is new so I wanted to try it with the fam. Each of us had different flavors- ube puff with ube filling, Oreo puff with chocolate filling, and green tee puff with green tee filling. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and texture 10/10!!! The only two things I could recommend to the owner is the the flow of the place - I like to see all the good in one place and there were two oddly positioned displays of the puffs. If they are put together will make just more sense for the customers. The second thing would be the menu - I would take beautiful pictures of each item and enlarge them. The food is the bomb and is lacking the proper promotion. I can come and take the pictures for you and set up the menu on the screen so people are drooling over the food. I wonder how it would taste fresh from the fryer and with the cold cream would've been good. But what do I know it's my first time. The place could use some music inside. It seemed quiet and cold... No life inside.. When you enter an establishment you want to feel welcomed. Would hate for this place to go out of business due to little changes that can be made.
