I'm so excited to share my love for Beard Papa's! Whenever I'm back home in California, I always think about grabbing a treat from this place, but now I don't have to wait for a trip to Cali to get this - it's already here!! I'm so happy they opened in the Dallas area. Compared to some locations I've been to in the past, they don't really have seating or much decorations, but this location definitely has more of it. What I like about these is that they are made not too sweet compared to other American cream puffs. Additionally, I have a background in baking and pastry, so I appreciate how well these are made and would like to address some concerns (due to some reviews). The pastry bread part isn't supposed to be sweet (or taste like much really) - they're supposed to be light and airy so that the cream becomes encapsulated in the pastry. Also, these are an asian derivative of "cream puffs", so they're going to be different compared to European-style puffs. I'd say that they made them well to accommodate the popularity of baked goods in Asia - not too sweet filling and fluffy inside. The price that these go for are better compared to other bakeries and grocery stores that sell them, especially when these are rather large cream puffs! read more

Good quality and tasty but not for me. Flavors to get: creme brûlée and the honey butter shell with regular filling. The honey butter makes it so crispy on the outside! Delicious filled-to-order, freshly made-in-house cream puffs! Are they worth the $3 and some cents? They are if your brother's treating you to them, haha (thanks, bro). Beard Papa's is pretty poppin' on the East coast and West coast (and obviously Japan since it is a Japanese chain) so I feel pretty blessed to have one here in good ol' Plano. I was able to try the original and the honey & butter shells. The other flavors looked really cute but I don't get too adventurous with cream puffs and like to keep it simple. The outer shell is a Japanese choux that is pretty light and flaky. The honey & butter shell is pretty good though, it adds a nice layer of sweetness. I love that vanilla custard filling and I love how much of it is packed into the cream puff. It's sweet but not too sweet and is cool, creamy, and delicious. We ordered one of everything except green tea and all with the vanilla filling (original, creme brûlée, strawberry, chocolate, honey and butter). The puff was a bit hard/crunchy. I wish it was fluffier and it would make eating this cream puff probably much easier but because of the crunchy exterior and biting hard all that cream just oozes out and then it became super messy. From the outside we couldn't differentiate the original and the honey and butter and when we tried them both they tasted the exact same so still not sure which was which. Couldn't really taste any strawberry and I only tasted a little bit of the creme brûlée. Overall it was okay. It isn't suppose to be your store bought creme puffs or the typical asian pastry that has a soft bread like outer. These babies are a cross between a French choux ( pâte à choux ) and a creme puff custard filling. In a choux, the outer shell is golden with a slightly crunchy consistenncy while the inside is fluffy and airy - which is what this is. The custard filling inside is cool the the touch, not warm, while being lighter than your typical asian pastry custard. Think of it as a whipped, melted ice cream. No, it isn't super sweet ( the original ), unless you get the ones with icing - that makes it really sweet. A choux's filling is heaaaavy, with a light outter. I like their cream puffs and am so glad that they finally opened a store here in Plano. I haven't had a Beard Papa's cream puff since 2011 when I was in Vancouver. BUT their attitude is less than desirable. I asked them if I needed to order ahead for an order and they looked at me like an idiot. THE SMELLS. The store smells freakin' amazing! I was so excited that Beard Papa's made its way from California to home for me :) Running from about $3-4, these cream puffs are truly a delight! They have a wide variety of outer puff shells to pick from, as well as fillings. My person and I tried a creme brulee puff and a honey+butter with strawberry filling. The strawberry filling was delicious and probably my go-to in the future! The honey+butter gave the puff a nice crunch! The creme brulee was good, but probably not something I would get again in the future. The vanilla filling on this was on point, so definitely something I want to try with another shell. The seating in here is limited to a couple of barstools against the window/wall. But if you want extra seating or water, they cashier recommended going next door to Zero Degrees - apparently, they're associated in some way and will let you hang out in there as well! We opted to hang out in the small space and enjoy the sweet smells and the bright vibrant colors of the store. Never really been into cream puffs but had to try! It may not be the traditional cream puff you're expecting but for what it is... I like them. When you walk in you can smell butter and pastry cream right away. It's glorious. There are several different kinds of puffs and 2 kinds of pastry cream (vanilla and green tea). My favorite is definitely the creme brulee with vanilla cream. The puffs itself are a bit on the crispier side which I like as soft puff with soft cream is just one boring texture. I also love that they're not too sweet. These would be nice for a small gift or to bring to a gathering as they have very cute boxes! I've been hearing of this place for awhile and they finally made their way to the Dallas area. It's such a cute little shop. Not much seating inside, just a few bar stools but I imagine this as a grab and go type of place. When you walk inside, you're greeted by the concept of Beard Papa's on the wall. Basically you decide which type of cream puff you want and filling. Note that these aren't your typical cream puffs. They're probably triple the size and they're made fresh! So it depends on which filing you get to consider this a hit. We got probably five total and my favorite were the strawberry cream puff with I think strawberry filling (I forget if it was just regular filling) along with the matcha cream puff with matcha filling. I put the rest in the fridge to eat the following days and they were just as good!!! Definitely a hit in my books. A nice dessert that isn't too sweet to make you feel guilty. I love cream puffs, and I think Bread Papa's does a good job with their cream puffs. It's good that they fill the cream in the puff when you order, as opposed to having it sit and wait to be eaten. It retains the crispy part of the puff! In my recent visit, I had to try the pumpkin cream upon the recommendation of a friend. She said it had the pumpkin flavor without the pumpkin spice, which is something that is very hard to find nowadays! I got it with a regular puff and it was so good. I wish I could get it again but it is a seasonal thing that ends after Halloween. Other than that, they have a variety of other cream flavors as well as different puffs as well! The bread has this soft and crunchy shell, with a cold cream (filled with your choice). They are light and aren't too filing.. and the best part... they aren't too high in calories!! I can eat about 2-3 in just one sitting haha. My favorite would have to be the creme brûlée. I would recommend that and the matcha to everyone I see! I also am a fan of the chocolate cream puffs. Also the decoration inside is very cute. It's clean and trendy and on point with the interior design skills. Finally beard papa has landed in this part of the country. Always had them in LA. The shell is crunchy on the outside & sift on the inside filled with soft custard in the Centre. Many different types of shells to choose from. Chocolate shell, green tea shell, creme brûlée .... Currently they have two types of custard, regular & green tea. Hopefully they'll make chocolate custard in the future coz I think that would be s popular choice. Not sure why they don't sell drinks here at all. What's with that? This is a more To-go place.
