I first fell in love with Beard Papa's in Boston, and I was absolutely elated to find that there was a location in Plano. As an experience junkie who tries to avoid going to the same place more than once (or at least never orders the same thing on the menu twice), I have repeatedly returned to Beard Papa's and always order the exact same thing: a chocolate cream puff with green tea filling. It's just absolutely perfect, particularly the green tea filling. It's a very potent matcha flavor (just the right sweet:bitter ratio - I find a lot of mediocre matcha flavoring is simply too sweet). Paired with the rich chocolate shell, it's the perfect light, airy, yet satisfying dessert! The only reason I give the place 4 stars is because I don't particularly love any other combination of cream puff and filling. The chocolate filling tastes kind of artificial, and the green tea shell simply doesn't do it for me. I have not felt a strong urge to try any of the plain/vanilla flavors. But I would recommend you to try a couple to see for yourself before you settle on your perfect combination! read more

We were in the area for an event and I decided to satisfy my curiosity by stopping in. This place is adorable and small with some furniture that's more cutesy than functional. That makes sense- how many people are going to stuff their face full of cream puffs in front of strangers anyway? I mean have some shame and devour that box hidden in a dark corner like the rest of us, emerging with pastry crust in your eye lashes and filling streaking through your hair! Just kidding, I got no shame when it comes to sweets. There were a few stools in one corner, but we took ours to go. I ordered an original with vanilla filling, a green tea and a honey & butter, both with a matcha filling. Then I asked my husband what he wanted. He got the Crispy Almond with vanilla filling. Frankly, I thought the menu with all the flavors was a little overwhelming. I also had to reconcile the fact that I spent over $13 on 4 cream puffs. However, the cream puffs are really large. They charge $3.20 for the original and $3.40 for other flavors. That's not too bad if you're wanting to try unusual flavors. This location has a rewards card where they sign off a stamp for every $5 spent, so basically for every 2 cream puffs you purchase. After 9 stamps, you get a free one! That's good because my dessert habit can get pricey. Though that can be more of a problem with fresh product that's more than $3 a pop, but also has to be consumed quickly or refrigerated. I don't think at this size they would very good refrigerated. There is something for everyone's flavor preference, but that may backfire. When there are too many combinations, and not necessarily all of them go together, it's definitely possible to get carried away and order 'wrong.' If you know what you like, no problem. If you're being adventurous, that's the potential price you pay. All the different shells have varying sizes and textures, but they were all crispy, to varying degrees. Honestly, the original was the best. It had a crunchy shell with the best texture, a flavorful and smooth filling and a familiar taste. Solid choice! I wasn't as impressed by the other shells, the varying shapes and sizes may make that crispy, crunchy shell softer or harder and won't necessarily be in that sweet spot. I didn't like that some of them, like the Green Tea shell, had a hardened cream on the outside. First, it was only on one side of the pastry and second, it threw off the texture contrast. Basically the other shells were just good, instead of magical. I did like the flavor of the matcha filling the best, but the vanilla filling was smoother, more traditional and better suited to that perfect bite. Though I intend to try both fillings with the original shell for a more accurate comparison next time, I'm currently leaning towards the vanilla. I also want to say that the ratio of filling was perfect, none were overfilled or messy. I noticed that was a complaint in some of the reviews, but we didn't have that issue. The staff was also friendly, helpful and very efficient. I can't speak for everyone there, but at least the staff on Sunday afternoons has it down to a science. The packaging is ridiculously cute and had me giggling all the way to the car! Was it worth the price? Maybe, maybe not, that answer will be based on your personal dessert line in the sand. I will say I'm glad I tried it at least once and may stop in occasionally. For me, the most impressive part of our visit, was how my husband responded to this concept. He is not big on sweets- at all! Anyone who is a lover of sweets, but has a partner who isn't, understands the complications and annoyances that can cause. I mean, it basically means that they won't (or rarely) partake in all your dessert adventures to justify your addiction by proxy! So you can imagine my shock when my husband loved his Crispy Almond with vanilla cream puff enough to mention it twice that day, again four days later and then again yesterday. Twilight zone! That in itself is a testament to how good this place is. I'm going to have to try the Crispy Almond next time too, just to figure out how they fixed him! Visiting Dallas and was looking for something new and different on Yelp. And it was not disappointing. Its a small nicely decorated clean place. It wasn't crowded. The girls at the cashier was very sweet and helpful. The cream puffs were big, bigger than expected. We got 2 cream puffs, Strawberry top with cookies n cream filling and the creme brûlée (pre made) And omg! They were not what I expected. We were blown away by the taste, the creaminess, the freshness. The cream puff were soft with the right amount of crunch, filling was cold and it was simply amazing. Best treat for the sweet tooth! The price is reasonable for the taste and size of the dessert. Going there again for sure before I head back home. I love that Beard Papa's has taken a chance at opening up shop in Dallas, TX! Originated from Osaka, Japan, Beard Papa's serves up cream puffs that are both high quality and consistent. I grew up eating Beard Papa's in Taiwan and LA. I do wish there can be more filling selections like the Beard Papa's in Asia (like sesame-flavored filling, among others) but my favorite go-to order is the simple original shell with vanilla filling, so I am content either way. Welcome to Dallas Beard Papa's! The cream puffs are filled to order and they have a small variety of combinations from the cream puffs themselves to the filling. Overall I really enjoyed the cream puffs. My favorite was the honey butter because it added a crunchy layer on top of the puff similar to how you get that cookie layer on top of bolo bao. The dipped puffs (chocolate/matcha) were alright, but the texture of the dip is similar to that of candy melts which isn't my personal favorite. This place is yum! It's a small shop where you just pick and choose what you want and take it back to eat. They have a pretty good variety of mixes you can pick. The ones i picked up to share with my friends were - matcha/ vanilla cream, creme brûlée/vanilla, strawberry/matcha, crispy almond/vanilla. Favorite was definitely the crispy almond! It's the only one that's donut-shaped but i love almonds in pastries so omg. I was like really confused how they were gonna fill it but it was very evenly and thoroughly filled! A little bit easier to eat that the regular shaped ones tbh. Creme brûlée was good if you have a strong sweet tooth LOL. Friends thought the flavored shells were overpowering the matcha cream and couldn't really taste matcha and all agreed it would be better with a plain-ish shell. Can't go wrong with any of the flavors. I ordered one of each except for the strawberry and the creme brûlée is my favorite. The vanilla and green tea fillings are yummy so make sure to try one of each. The chocolate fondant cake is good too. If you get it to go, make sure to warm it up and eat it with ice cream. This place has some hype and it lives up to it. I'm not big on desserts but these cream puffs may change my mind. They are not overly sweet and have a great mix of textures. The crispy shell with the rich cream filling, it just goes together. The menu is relatively simple, just choose a shell and a filling but there are so many combinations and they all go well together it seems. I haven't had a puff that I didn't like. Also, they aren't necessarily cheap ($3.40) but you could be spending more on most other dessert options out there. Plus if you order in bulk (6 or 12) you get a slight discount. I have loved Beard Papa's for years starting in Waikiki over 10 years ago. Since then, I've visited BP in Los Angeles, Pasadena, and now in Richardson, TX of all places. I am so excited they are here!!!!!!! The puffs here are almost always on point: crispy flaky on the outside, soft and cavernous in the inside. The vanilla cream is so flavorful. They're delicious, the vanilla filling isn't overly sweet, which I love and appreciate. I tried one right after buying it, and that one seemed too crispy on the outside. We were out and about, so I tried another one 2 hours later, and that one was the perfect puff texture and softness. It's so hard to find fresh puffs that don't taste dry, hard, or cold right out of fridges, so I hope this place can continue to maintain its puff freshness! The puffs are very large and messy to eat, so if you're planning to 'share', have a plate, knife, and forks ready. I tried dividing one in the car and ended up eating all of it by myself. The chocolate melts very quickly after touching it, the filling gushes out, and it really prevents you from wanting to give half of it away to share anyway :) The green tea puff was surprisingly delicious, and I almost didn't get it. It's less sweet than the chocolate and strawberry ones. I have to try the green tea filling next time. This place is 100x more delicious than meccha matcha, btw, since I just tried that dessert place last week. Comparing different items, but the stores are both from Japan and carry green tea items :) I'd give this place 5 stars for quality puffs, but for 6 puffs at $22, it's too pricey imo. YUM! I'm so glad Beard Papa's has come to Dallas. Each cream puff is a bit pricey at ~$4 but I would honestly rather have one cream puff than a scoop of ice cream/ gelato or boba tea at other places. Pick your dessert.. or have both. I first tried the chocolate shell with green tea filling. They have so many great combinations that it's easy to mix and match and find something for everyone! The puffs are crispy.. light.. simply delectable. The filling was just right - creamy and not too sweet. The green tea filling is personally my favorite because I'm a big fan of green tea and they do it right. It's best to eat your cream puff as soon as possible because it can get soggy if the filling stays inside too long. Beware: it can get a bit (or more than a bit) messy so have napkins ready! Overall, the shop is a bit small but cozy and cute. There are a couple of seats off to the side if you want to sit and eat your cream puffs quickly, but otherwise it's more of a grab-and-go store... might as well get multiple while you're at it and gift them to friends and family! If you buy multiple, they come in convenient boxes and look aesthetically pleasing (vs a paper bag if you buy one). I love their seasonal flavors and holiday deals.. just keep luring me back for more. If you love cream puffs then this place is for you. I arrived at 11:10, the store is supposed to be open by 11. I was walking in when the owner just turned on his lights. It smells heavenly inside. I wanted to order 2 of every flavor. But the owner said that it will take about 30 min for the crispy almond to bake. Also would take the honey butter some time to bake too. Well I was like 30 min isn't too bad. What he didn't tell me was that it's 30 min to bake from the time he went into the back to make it so it can be baked. Sadly, My family was sitting in the car and didn't want to wait so long so I had to cancel the crispy almonds. Once he brought all the flavors up, I had a total of 27 puffs that needed to be filled. They had several flavors but the owner didn't ask me what I wanted. He just filed it all up with vanilla. They weren't bad, but I was hoping to try other flavors like lemon or the coffee one. The honey butter and the matcha puffs were my favorite. The puffs were nice and crispy and very light. They are huge too. Maybe next time, I will not order so much since he didn't have any out in display, so I thought they were small. The only reason why they lost a star from me was he filed it all w vanilla and didn't give me a choice for any other flavors. Plus by the time I let there, I've waited almost an hour. And the crispy almond still wan not done baking. Yikes. My family was pretty upset. So maybe it's best to call ahead and then pick up. It did take a while. Place was cute and smells really good. The Thai iced tea was surprisingly great. I would definitely order it again. I would not return for the puffs though. I tried the original, cookies and cream, caramel, and creme brulee. The caramel was the best, simply because I liked eating the caramel on top. I didn't finish the puff though. I couldn't give this place more than 2 stars as I didn't finish a single puff. Rating all depends on when you go, who's working & what's available. My first visit was 5 star worthy - the puff shells were fresh, not too hard & fillings were delicious (the limited ed strawberry cream was amazing!) I ate 4 just to try everything out! The lady working the counter was sweet &very clean in food handling. My subsequent visits were mediocre - same sweet girl working but one time the shell was waaay hard it actually gave us "small mouth lacerations" and other times the filling would either be too liquidy or scarce. My most recent visit was disappointing. The creme brûlees had barely any filling, the butter honey shell was teeny tiny, we had to wait for a while on refill of a filling, and the lady (different from before) had no food handling etiquette. The same gloved hand was use to handle payment, touch everything including doors/trays/equipment AND of course the cream puffs. She was basically just protecting her hands from getting dirty and not the cream puffs! For $3-4 a pc, not worth it. We're not going back. 2 stars for our 1st awesome experience. read more
