this review is based purely on beard puffs and deserts in general. We first came her for an ice cream. I was looking at those cream puffs every single time but never "dared" to try something I didn't know. Then finally after like 6 months tried my first. This has become an addition. Still beard papa's, but not as good as I remember from their Hawaii locations. Still super large cream puffs, but the ones I got here just didn't seem to cut the mustard. Maybe cream pan has spoiled me, but the fond memories of the beard papa's I used to frequent back home weren't re created by biting into the ones I got here. I've been a regular of Beard Papa and found this location on their website. I went around Sunday afternoon and it was relatively busy inside the Mochilato. You can tell the puffs were made in large batches and the chou cream was let to sit in the fridge for a period of time (they had vanilla and chocolate puffs). I can see why they put those extras as decorations rather than chucking them. I will either wait for the banana cream on Wednesdays, or Green Tea on Fridays. Mochilato, on the other hand, was a different experience and I will likely return for the Mochi or Macaroons. read more

I got a box of 6 original cream puffs, it was buy 6 get 1 free. The cream was delicious, but the puff was a bit dry, probably due to sitting out in a basket. My main complaint was that this store was understaffed. Only 2 people working, a line quickly formed. Took me 15 min to get my puffs, only 2 people were ahead of me. I want to give this place 4 stars because they kind of take a while to get your order out, BUT...the cream puffs are so incredibly fresh and delicious I can not fault them for taking a little longer to prepare. These are literally the only cream puffs I will eat. Most times cream puffs have an "eggy" taste to them and I absolutely can't stand that. I've known about bread papa for a long time and am glad they are available here. Though they have different kinds of puffs and flavored creams, you cannot go wrong with the original! I can't have enough. But if you do want to try something else, get the honey butter puff with the original cream. They are just as good and you can go wrong. Thanks to all the tellers who left the tip that the Beard Papas was located inside the Mochilatto! I almost missed it! So, after having first discovered this chain in Little Tokyo, my trips to LA would always end with bringing some cream puffs home. This time, I was in Long Beach with a friend, and threw in "Beard Papas" for a lark, and actually noticed one on the way home! For the actual experience, I would rate things "okay". I was bummed that my only filling choices were vanilla and chocolate. I was totally jonesing for the cookies and creme one I had before in little Tokyo and little Seoul. Service was friendly though, and if it wasn't so damn hot, I would've loved to have tried their mochilattos. They also serve my favorite tea, (tea forté!) so I know if I lived in Irvine, I'd probably make this place a frequent stop! read more

Their so spread out in OC and after having nasty lunch at the Elephant Bar I thought this would make up for it but boy was I wrong! We stopped by to pick up a bag of 5 mini Beard Papa cream puffs tonight(March 08, Friday). We were disappointed. 3 out of 5 were only half-filled. 2 had barely any cream in it. I remember the ones I got from their Little Tokyo store were always full of cream. It supposed to get on your hand and make a mess when you bite on it. . That's not the case here. . I was happy to say that they cream puffs were really good. I had a strawberry and vanilla original cream puff. I thought the vanilla was a little bland. The strawberry tasted amazing but it was a little bit harder to eat because the filling was runnier than it should have been. The puff portion was really good. I did like how they have the "we don't make it till you order it" mentality. It made sure that the cream didn't soften the puff part from sitting there for too long. In December 2011, our dream became a reality when Beard Papa's opened a store in Irvine. I was a little confused as the location kept saying, "Mochilato". Once I saw the Beard Papa's sign on the window, I was so there! Beard Papa's occupies a small section inside the Mochilato store. While the store displays some pricey specialty items, the unmistakable aroma of the Beard Papa's cream puffs reminded us of Vancouver. We placed our order with the courteous staff but had to wait a bit while they dealt with an empty or malfunctioning custard tank. A little bit of "Opening Night Jitters," maybe? That was a little disappointing hiccup in prep and presentation. Once our order was filled, they lovingly boxed our selections. Just a few steps away were long wooden tables where we had our coffee and Beard Papa's delights. We chose a couple of each type of puff shell - Original, Éclair, Cookie, Cocoa, and Paris Brest. We did a half and half with the original Vanilla filling and the Special Flavor was Chocolate that day. As I sat down to eat a Cocoa shell with Chocolate filling, savoring the fresh baked scent of the cream puff, I was ALMOST back in Vancouver. As I bit into it, the chocolate puff was crisp and divine, but the chocolate filling was a bit too viscous and messy, unlike the custard I had expected. The Vancouver puff filling was easier to eat without having it squirt every which way. When I went home with my box of puffs, I tried a different method of conquering the soft filling. This time, I chose the Éclair puff with Vanilla filling. I tilted it with the filling hole facing upward and broke a piece of the shell off. Instead of biting into it, I simply broke off pieces of the shell and dipped it in to the filling. That solved the "mess" problem. The Éclair shell is divine and decadent, kind of like a cruller with chocolate icing on top. The Vanilla filling, unfortunately, fell short of my expectation. It seemed to be a watered-down version of the Vanilla custard I first tried in Vancouver. read more
