We had my daughter's 12th birthday party here in the Spy Room escape room and the kids had a blast. It was well calibrated for kids (not easy but not impossible either) and the guide provided a walkie-talkie that the kids could use to request clues. The guide also provided periodic updates (you have 30 minutes left etc). We had 7 kids and 1 adult providing supervision to give a helping hand in a few instances. The customer service was great, easy to book and they were right on time. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a kids birthday. read more

This place was pretty rad! Located in downtown San Jose with easy paid parking lot next to the building thats hardly full on a weekend plus there was a sharks hockey game that night. I went with a group of 8 and we did the Silicon Valley room in what is a jail cell. A ton of super cool brain teasing tasks to complete. We decided to try "hard mode" which only allowed us to get 3 hints from the game master. Pretty cool, they give you a walkie talkie to ask for hints if you get stuck. We came to find out that 3 hints was not enough about 20 minutes in haha! We went off hard mode and had the game master help us a few more times. The lady who helped me was so kind and was able to extend a 20% off promotion for my booking. Was about $32/person (not a bad price at all!). Booking experience (online) was 10/10. However, when I went in person for my escape room experience, the "game master" assigned to us did not seem very enthusiastic and the overall vibes felt off (when compared to my other 15+ experiences at other escape rooms). The escape room we did was a little disappointing as it was only 2 "rooms" and anticlimactic (you don't "escape" the room, you're let out by the game master), but there were clever puzzles/riddles. Came to Beat the Lock for a corporate event with a group of about 40-50 people. Parking is a little hidden, there is a narrow path off The Alameda street that takes you to the parking lot in the back. We were split into 5 teams of 8-10 people. Each team got assigned to an experience - our team got the Adult Spy Room and we had 60 minutes to solve it. It was tricky but after getting some hints from the game master, we were able to get out with less than 3 minutes to spare! Overall I liked it. As an avid escaper, I thought that the Attic room here was actually fairly reflective of the price (~$38). The overall feel of this escape room is one step above low-budget--not a bad thing, especially because it seems they made the most of what they could with the decor, the locks, and the puzzles. What I liked: - fair price - relevant puzzles streamlined to the theme (no random gimmicky, unrelated, time-suck puzzles) - clear objective - friendly, observant-during-the-escape staff - big parking lot What could be improved: - the background noises were WAY too loud (hard to hear teammates, hard to hear necessary audio beyond the background noise. This made us waste a lot of time just listening over and over to each other and the other audio) - the room was slightly too dark (they let you bring in your phones to use as flashlights) - having certain clue pieces hinged onto the scene so if it does happen to get messed up, there's no time wasted second guessing if the clue is set up correctly or not Overall, would book again and would recommend to others! read more

The staff were nice enough to be able to accommodate our group running late, since no one booked the room after us, which we really appreciated. But that's probably the only thing I appreciated about the experience. That and the fact that the pricing only came out to about $37 each (on the cheaper end for most escape rooms), but we got what we paid for -- a cheap experience. We do escape rooms on a regular basis (our current favorite is Omescape in Sunnyvale! Go there instead), so we have many other experiences to compare this one to. We did the Xternal Forces room. I hate having to ask for hints, but we had to start at some point because the reference map for one of the puzzles was so difficult to understand/read. The game master was showing us clues on the screen, but the screen in the second room was disconnected so they had to send someone in mid-game to fix it. And there were so many clues per puzzle, which shows that there are many other groups who encountered the same frustrating issues -- the puzzles were not clear enough nor thought-out enough. I don't want to give away any of the specifics that went wrong because I wouldn't want to spoil the puzzles for anyone who does come. But just know -- it's not worth it. We passed, but instead of feeling accomplished, I left just feeling frustrated. read more

We had to wait 10-15 mins to start bc there was a large group ahead of us. My group was 5 people but would have been 7 if two didn't cancel. If you want a challenge, this is the escape room for you! If you're running late, there's no way you can adjust your reservation. We were roughly about 10 minutes late and our time already started. Despite being late, they still let us in and try to finish the escape room with the time we had left. Unlike other escape rooms, the escape room master here was quite absent throughout our entire experience. We were lost for a majority of the time and the escape room master would only give us hints after a significant amount of time being lost. The second and last time the escape room master gave us a clue was literally a minute before our time ended. Not sure if they were understaffed that day, but I wished the escape room master was more present. The escape room we did was Secrets in the Attic which I thought had some really cool elements. Oh my goodness. 100% do NOT recommend. I went to an event here with a small group of content creator friends and we were sorely disappointed. I have done several different escape rooms and multiple locations and this was, by far, the worst experience I have ever had. Check in process was quick and easy. It was probably the most enjoyable part of the evening. When our gamemaster came out, he was nice, but had the LOWEST energy. It's hard to get hyped when your gamemaster isn't even excited about the intro. The clues in the first room were promising. They made sense and we were able to make some progress without asking for any clues. However, we were still looking forward to the second room where the gamemaster said we would have access to a walkie-talkie to get hints. When we finally make it to the 2nd of the 3 rooms, there was no walkie-talkie to be found. The clues given to us on the screen were either super convoluted or already existed in the room, and we were jumping up and down in front of the camera trying to get the gamemaster's attention, but had no luck. When time elapsed and the gamemaster entered to debrief, we informed in that we never got the walkie-talkie. He apologized, but had nothing else to offer us as penance. As he continued on to explain the clues, we quickly realized that there were pieces of a few clues missing. Oooookaaaaay. How are we supposed to solve puzzles that we don't have all the pieces to? NEVER AGAIN! Save yourself the horror and go to Omescape, PaniQ, or anywhere else instead. So disappointing. We didn't even bother recording content even though we were given the okay to do so within the rooms. read more

The clues were great and solving each and every step was such a great time! We had people ranging from 95 years young down to 17 years old working on escaping. Came here for some team building with a group of nine people! We had a wonderful time solving one of the "mysteries" (45 minutes with a 60 minute limit). The rooms were big enough to have nine people inside, so it didn't feel crowded. The clues were also something you had to think about so it wasn't a walk-in-the-park. The props were great and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. This is my second time going to an Escape Room but some of my colleagues have gone to four or five and they said Beat The Lock was one of the best. The staff was friendly and there were multiple waiting rooms that could have hosted a dozen people. We came here for our first in person escape room since COVID started and we were super psyched to play! We did the Spy Room. For reference, our team was comprised of people who regularly do escape rooms, so that certainly affects this review. The room was very clean. I've definitely done escape rooms that weren't just disgusting by design, but downright filthy, and especially in these times I really appreciate how well kept and clean all the surfaces of the room were. The escape game itself was...fine. My guess is some of the aspects of the room, like items being locked behind covers, are a product of it being covid times, but they unfortunately contributed to a less immersive experience. The production value was okay; it didn't seem to work well enough to feel like we did thing A that caused thing B. Minor personal gripe about the locks being boring (I like directional and letter locks!). That all said. This is a pretty good room for a newer group of people, or for a group of people who haven't been spoiled by high production value escape rooms (which I totally am). Omescape didn't have any last minute bookings available, but I came across an opening for the attic room and easily convinced my group to venture out for some spontaneous fun. We were a bit underwhelmed by the experience. Our game master was pleasant and helpful, but we didn't like the puzzles itself and the fact that everything was all about locks. I didn't realize we would be split up into 2 rooms, so that was interesting. The clues themselves are also strange. They're located outside and correlated with the numbered puzzles in the room. You aren't allowed to take the clue into the room though. If you need more help, the game master can prompt you. I've also never experienced any bookings asking for tips before. To the owner: if you truly value your employees and think they are doing an exceptional job, just freaking pay them more. read more

Visited this place back in 2018 with my team for a team activity. Ah, the good old days! Must say it was really great and I loved the entire experience. Our team was divided up in 2 rooms and I believe we solved the same puzzle. The goal was to find out which team would solve the puzzle first. They had a lot of swag to take your photos with. They do give some hints on how to solve it. There is swag for winning and losing teams both and taking your photos. They're generous with clues so don't forget to use them if you're stumped. One room could use some maintenance since the walkie talkies were low on batteries and reminding my group throughout the second half of my experience.
