Why all the negative reviews?! I've been here twice now, and I had a BLAST both times. The first time was Y2K night, and I had such a great time I decided to have my birthday here last weekend for 90s night. Both times, I RSVP'd on do312.com. I received free cover before 10pm the first time, but I had to pay a $5 cover the second time despite getting there before 10pm. It did come with a ticket for a free PBR though. My favorite part is the room in the back with the disco ball. I also love that there's a Photobooth. Plus, who doesn't love a martini and manicure for $10!! Definitely give this place a try if you love to dance, but check out their events calendar on their website beforehand so you know what type of theme you're getting yourself into. read more

Warning: expect a drunken shit show of college art students here. Never, ever, fails. If that's not your thing, don't go. We used to come here all the time back in the day and it was always a riot. They host a lot of theme night dance parties which are great for a night out with girlfriends, or a (most likely) sloppy first date. Drinks are average prices, but it's usually so packed that it takes a while to get serviced. Perhaps I'm just an old geezer these days but when I stopped in last weekend I was pretty irked. So.many.drunk.teens! There were belly shirts, body glitter, and dance trains galore! We saw a girl puke on one of the couches and knew it was our time to bounce... Came here for a bachelorette party I planned. Had a good time! Music was good -- R&B night. Decor is cheerful and fun, kinda psychodelic--reminds me of a Spice Girls Spice World set, which was perfect for our bachelorette party. Pros: Cheap cover charge, good music, positive vibe. Really liked the diverse crowd. Overall very young, so I kinda felt like an auntie but I didn't mind! Cons: So crowded that I didn't even bother to try getting a drink at the bar. Also didn't bother trying to get my nails done. In general, just waaaaaaaay too crowded. Like possibly breaking fire code crowded. I don't mind crowds, but I eventually had to leave because I felt like a sardine packed into a can. Sunday night emo/punk dance night. Something my high school self would've been so proud to attend, and something I did actually enjoy. Came in with a group of friends for a birthday - the decor is funky. Definitely minimal, and I'd love to see the place fully lit up but it was fun. Drinks were very reasonably priced ($1 old styles, $7 cocktails and $3 drafts) and there was a lot of seating. The crowd was a bit weird, and there definitely needed to be another bartender working, but overall it was a fun time. I'm not running to come back because it's so far out of the way, and was freezing cold the entire time we were there (contrary to other reviews, every single person who had a coat was wearing it). OK, I came here years ago for a martini and manicure. Sure, it's $10... because the manicure is terrible and the martini isn't very strong. Fast forward to a recent experience at Beauty Bar for one of their "dance nights" on Saturdays. They typically have Facebook events advertising these themed dance parties and - surprise - they had one for the one we went to. The event page said that if you RSVPd to the party via their website, you could skip the $5 cover at the door. So, we all fill out this stupid form online and (I'm sure) sign ourselves up for mailing lists galore and we're ready to go. Once we're in line to get in, we hear people ahead of us complaining that they're being asked to pay the $5 cover even though they RSVPd ahead of time. It's kind of a lot of people complaining. Of course, my friends and I are prepared to complain because that's not how the event page explained this would work! Once we give our names and get our stamps, we're asked to pay the $5 cover. We argue and the hostess or whatever says "That's not what the Facebook page said." Oh yes it did, honey. So we stood there, two of us, attempting to pull up the event on our phone to show her... and guess what? THE EVENT PAGE WAS GONE. Erased. Like it never existed. That is shady as hell. Welp, I guess you're right... that's not what the event page said because it no longer exists. Shady. As. Hell. So we paid the $5 cover for the music and got a free PBR ticket for it (so we paid $5 for a $3 beer?). The bar wasn't too crowded at 9 but by 11 the whole place was like a sardine can. The line at the bar was three people deep and it was impossible to get a drink (or close a tab). Needless to say, this place got gross pretty quickly. I'll definitely never come back here, even if they advertise some kind of super awesome theme night. It's not worth it at all, especially since the place turns into a douche-haven with a line three storefronts long outside. This place is not that great! Why are so many people waiting to get in? Beauty Bar is a place I've been wanting to try for quite a while. Every Friday and Saturday night there's a huge line to get in, which led me to believe it would be pretty awesome. I had a good time, but overall was underwhelmed. It's a fun dance club (I went for their Y2K night) but it becomes so packed that it's nearly impossible to get a drink. They had two bartenders working on a Saturday night, and given the number of people there it's no wonder it took forever to get served even once I finally shoved my way to the bar. I am looking forward to trying their happy hour $10 martini and manicure deal sometime during the week, but as for a weekend place to go, I'd recommend pregaming so you don't have to wait forever for a drink. read more

So admittedly, I'm past my clubbing prime, but there's something about beauty bar that get's it done. The event I love is the Freedom Party which is held on the third Friday of every month. They play old-school, hip hop, R&B, Dancehall. Whatever they're spinning, it's generally sure to keep the dance floor packed. Typically on an old school night you wouldn't expect the crowd to be very diverse, but to my surprise (a happy one) it was a very mixed group. Overall good atmosphere. Years ago this place was a fun place to dance. Now, it's utterly lame af! Today 7/12/19 was supposed to be a tribute to Destiny's Child, specifically "The Writing's on the Wall" 20 year anniversary. They played a lot of new music and repeated a lot of the same Beyonce or Destiny's Child songs, none from the album they were celebrating. They played like 2 songs from the album by 1am! The rest were all mumble rap, new school with a peppering of Beyonce or Destiny's Child. The music was at least late 90s/00s between 9-11pm. Then it all went downhill. If you're going to promote Destiny's Child who have a huge song list, then that's what you should deliver. read more

When my friend told me about Beauty Bar - a bar/club that is also a nail salon - I had the biggest bewildered look on my face. Now, whenever someone mentions Beauty Bar, my eyes light up w/ excitement. A bunch of us went on 90's Night, and we all had an awesome time. None of the girls in our group got their nails done, so I can't comment on that aspect of it, but the music and atmosphere at Beauty Bar is amazing. If you're a fan of 90's music (honestly, who isn't?), you're going to LOVE 90's Night. Mariah Carey. Biggie. Ace of Base. The Backstreet Boys. No Doubt. NSYNC. The DJ was on point - every 90's classic jam was played and the crowd definitely loved it. Drink prices are fair. It's a fun crowd and everyone else seemed to be having a grand time as well. Yelp should really consider labeling Beauty Bar under "Karaoke" as well since everyone is basically singing along to their favorite childhood songs! Ironically, I've never attended the Beauty Bar for anything "beauty" related. I know a few people who enjoy the mani-martini special, for $15, and they love it! Let me start by saying that I didn't exactly know what to expect. I knew it would be salon-ish, I had the feeling it'd feel retro, but in no way was I prepared for the kitschy awesomeness that was the interior of Beauty Bar. Pink and green sparkly walls, old school hairdryers, a dizzy disco ball on the dance floor, compounded with MORE PINK and offbeat details makes this place alterna-bride's bachelorette party central. I can also say that in retrospect, because we were here for a bachelorette party, and I bet every girl in our group was disappointed that the DJ wouldn't heed our Gaga requests, this isn't the place for everyone. The "oonz oonz" of the music may have allowed us to shake our booties respectively for a while, but sometimes you just need to hear a song you (or everyone) knows. Now, I know that some of you might disagree. A groovy place like Beauty Bar shouldn't give in to playing mainstream music on a Saturday night just because some yuppie bridey girls came in to order vodka cranberries. And you may very well have a point. Just because it wasn't my favorite place to get my groove on doesn't mean it can't be yours. Service was decent, nothing spectacular. Something tells me that Beauty Bar is one of those places where the experience is going to depend on what you're looking to get, and possibly what night you're there. I say this because according to one of the manicurists, there's one DJ that plays elevator music, her words, not mine. That said, we had a good time. Already planning to meet some friends because a DJ pal was spinning, we also took advantage of a deal on Google for some manis and martinis. The martinis were not the strongest on this planet, but I am actually still pretty pleased with my manicure and the gals doing the nails were fun. The place was pretty dead when we arrived around 8:15 but by 10:00 was getting a little more crowded, though still pretty chill. I liked the vintage salon themed decor and lighting. Also, they have a photobooth and the night we went they had a Brooklyn Brewery tap takeover going on and the prices were pretty great. I got dragged here by friends on a Saturday night. I paid $5 to dance to songs that people of a certain age danced to at grammar or high school dances. Sorry, not too keen on hearing (and paying to hear) "Barbie Girl," "Another Night," and "Everybody/Backstreet's Back." Not a music snob here, but I'm not feeling the nostalgia for the 90's. Probably because I was among a dwindling number of people here who lived through the whole decade (and more) and have memories that start before 1996. I also didn't get the memo that it was ugly sweater, knit cap and handlebar mustache night....I'm sure it wasn't planned that way by the bar, anyway. The temp in there is about 87 with 100% humidity. It's gross, just like the floor covered in PBR and broken glasses. Beauty Bar began to smell rancid, from the washrooms and dirty, sweaty hipsters. However, most of the youngins' here are super-friendly, and everyone just dances ( I got high-fives because I was one of the few who knew what to do for "Tubthumping." This was our first stop on our Girls' Night Out for obvious reasons -- what says GNO more than martinis and manicures? And for $10? Perfect. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I thought I'd walk into a salon that serves drinks. Wrong. A bar that gives manicures? Hm, okay. We called ahead to make reservations for five of us, but it wasn't needed on a Wednesday night at 10pm. Walked into this glittery wonderland of a bar dressed up as an old-fashioned salon. The atmosphere was very girly and very fun. Pretty empty, but the night was young. We all ordered the same drink -- Bed Head Martini. It was a bit strong for my taste, but $10 plus a free manicure? I wasn't complaining. We sat around this little desk in the front of the place while one girl did each of our nails one at a time. Nothing fancy, but it got the job done. Would I put this on a "Must do at some point in your life" list? Probably not. But I don't regret going either. Dance, get your nails done, take pics in the photo booth, and socialize at this quirky 'playground'. I went here for a friend's birthday, and I had a lot of fun! Admittedly, I was a little moderate in my fun, as I was driving AND had work the next morning, but I still had fun. The bar itself is very easy to find. It's right on Chicago Ave. and it's very straightforward. Parking was easy to find; I found a spot about two blocks away on the same street. When you first walk in, it's very cold, as the lobby is where they check IDs and get the cover charge. It was a very simple system, my friends and I were there early (at nine), so there was no wait. The cover charge of $5 was super reasonable, and the coat check was $3. I have a personal fear of coat checks, so I did not take advantage of theirs. I have to write about their decor. The Beauty Bar is definitely a themed bar. As soon as you walk in, there is a spot for their mani/martini deals, but there's also old school beauty shop appliances artfully placed. I loved the fact that they had hair dryers as chairs, plus it was made for a nice photo opp. The bar portion was very clean, and since it was early, their bartenders weren't too busy. The music was good, not great. We attended the Freedom Party, and I was expecting hip hop the entire night, but they played somewhat lame motown-esque club remix hits for the first hour we were there. Lame. So it was my 27th birthday and I wanted to feel young again. My friend Matt Roan was DJing at Beauty so me and my two best homies gave it a shot. BOOM. The crowd was attractive but not pretentious. The booze is affordable (we were sipping on Hendrix G n T's all night and our bill was only around $80 combined) and the dance floor is a great size and conveniently set away from the bar and seating area so that you don't have to mess with the people trying to chill out to get your groove on. The acoustics (leftover from Sonotheque) are still great and this is now my goto lowkey non-clubby place to get my dance on in Chicago, a place I miss dearly. This was my second visit to beauty bar and this place does not disappoint .. As long as you know what you are going for. Beauty Bar is first and foremost a bar/dance club with manicurists. If you go expecting a polished and trendy salon that serves drinks you may not be pleased. Manicurists are ready to go from 7-12pm everyday. They have a martini and manicure special $10 Mon-Fri and $15 Sat/Sun. This deal cannot be beat, especially in Chicago! They have a nice selection of trendy nail colors. You may have to wait a bit but who doesn't mind sipping a martini and listing to music while waiting for a cheap manicure? My boyfriend was surprisingly happy with the beer selection and prices. If you want to drink and get your dance in, stop by even if your not in the mood strobe lights and glittered walls help get you going. read more

Interesting concept. Martini and mani for $10 plus tip for both bartender and manicurist, so it's actually more. I came for an 80s dance party and the music was really good. The nail part of the bar was a little disorganized, there's just a bunch of girls waiting in 2 separate lines for 2 manicurists working. The manicures take about 5 minutes each, it's just filing, buffing, and polish, that's it, and the color options are quite limited. For the price it's okay though. The drink I had was good. I was excited about the photo booth, but we went in there and it smelled disgusting. Not sure if that's how it always is but we couldn't do it. Oh, the other complaint is around 10:30 or so, the volume of the music went WAAAAY up in volume; I left after my manicure, since my ears felt like they were assaulted and I could no longer talk to my friends. There was once a girl who grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. Upon visiting Chicago, she heard the term "hipster" on a crowded el train. She asked a native friend "what is a hipster?" The friend then drove her by The Beauty Bar on a friday night. He pointed to a group of guys wearing skin tight pants with v-necks so deep they write poetry while drinking PBR, and then a girl who spent three hours trying to look like she only took 15 minutes getting dressed. But I actually had a great time. Cheap drinks, not many douches, danceable music. Later, Beauty Bar would go on to host "Half Way to Halloween;" and showcase the DJ duo, Mr.Louis Kha and Mr. Mikul Wing; another anomaly in the space time continuum where these two DJ's happen to be quite cordial. Even DJ Alex Zelenka has made his cameos; yet choosing connect with everyone through his own unique style of electronic music. On the flip side, I consider myself quite the nightlife virgin. My opinions are coming from horror stories I've heard from people dealing with the same kind subculture in trendier downtown venues. I happen to be a music snob and have no interest putting on a cocktail dress and heels, just so that I can try to dance to Euro Trash techno; while hoping I meet a celebrity dude that's rich enough to marry. I'm too independent and I have a mind of my own. Change is Good, and young people grow older. Styles change. Come on, everyone, this is what we've made of ourselves! After 5 minutes, if you're not "over it," then you're too old; and you've fallen behind culturally. Sonotheque was an homage to the moment. Beauty Bar is about bringing its own irony into a Chicago neighborhood that supports it. Beauty Bar may be a chain; but I consider it a separate entity, proclaiming, "Hey I am a bar with a beauty salon theme, but don't get it twisted!" Beauty Bar made friends with Chicago, and you come here to observe the relationship that broke right out of its shell resulting in a hipster attitude which resonates, "Don't judge me." Like all bars, Beauty Bar has off nights where I swear some of the terrible reviews on here are not a far cry from the truth. I've been there on an 80's night where it looked more like a Quinceanera. During my college years, lots of bad hip hop on the radio made my ears bleed; and honestly, I don't want to be here on a night where the DJ is playing "Barbie Girl" either. I can promise you, this music is most likely played out of irony, and if you're caught dancing to it, this is probably serving as more entertainment for the DJ watching you, than the kind of enjoyment you're getting from dancing to it. "Oppa Gangnam style!" Then again, there are crappy DJ's. I just don't want to believe that Beauty Bar would pay them. Beauty Bar is all about hosting other kinds of events that aren't necessarily focused on the music; but more like events raising awareness for some kind of cause; and even poetry readings. On the right night, you can even witness the Zombie Apocalypse. If you're broke on a Sunday, come here for cheap beer and free pizza. Beware, there will be Disco! Beauty Bar, you're doing just fine.
