1/20/26 Updating my review to include the fact that the person who worked on me was Shirley, the spa owner. Today I received a text from an anonymous person at the spa apologizing for the poor treatment. They offered me another complimentary massage which I turned down because in my mind if the owner was that bad how could her employees be any better? Then this person offered to refund my money if changed my review. I declined that offer too because #1 I can't be bought and #2 these reviews need to be honest and EARNED, not PAID FOR. It made me seriously wonder how many of the other reviews are legitimate. As a business owner, Ms. Shirley should have thought about the possible Yelp! review while she was treating me so poorly, not trying to sweep it under the rug after! The anonymous person stated multiple times that they will take my feedback into serious consideration and they'll be extra careful to treat customers better in the future. You're welcome. 1/19/20 I saw all the positive reviews on Yelp! so I decided to check this place out. After my Massage Therapist introduced herself to me I explained to her that I recently had a trauma and that I am very sensitive and I need a very gentle massage. She said OK she understood but when the massage started, she was very heavy-handed and rough. Over the course of the next 55 minutes I had to tell her six times to please be gentle. The last three of those times I had to physically restrain her by putting my hands over her hands and telling her that she was being too rough. The final time I did this she said well OK we're done and walked out of the room about five minutes before my massage was supposed to have ended. Throughout the entire massage I had thought about walking out, but I didn't out of respect. Apparently she did not have the same respect for me. I paid for my service, but I did not tip and I will never go back again. And if the service wasn't bad enough, the neighborhood is also disgusting. There were at least four mentally ill drug addicted homeless people on the block, two of them yelling, one was a bare-chested woman who was clearly out of her mind, along with a handful of other shady, looking characters. read more

My former wax tech has lost her touch so I thought I'd give someone new a try. I found this place on Groupon. They were having a sale so I contacted the business directly, since I'd rather all proceeds go to the business. Their Yelp reviews seem decent enough so I booked the appointment. During booking, I texted a screenshot of the price and they confirmed to honor it. (This isn't my first rodeo) anyway! It's in the middle of Oaklands Chinatown so parking was a real challenge. Upon entering the building, you can tell it's due for some upgrades. But whatever. As soon as I get there I was asked if I had purchased the Groupon. I said no and showed her the text exchange. There was a bit of unnecessary haggle about the price, eventually we agreed on pricing ... first red flag. When I entered the wax room, I was immediately hit with the heat from the space heater. Woah! It was dark but I can tell the wax warmers hadn't been cleaned in a very long time so I almost walked out. But! I lifted the lid and can see the wax looked newish so I proceeded. No baby wipes to wipe with beforehand. No small wash clothes to cover yourself while you wait. Ok.. I'll live. Tech comes in, tell her what I've told 10 other esthetician (my preferences) and she seemed confused. We chatted about it for a little while, eventually she got started. Unfortunately - the wax was beyond a suitable temperature and when I told her she told me that "it's just how I need it" the entire experience was beyond painful. And it was scary. I hope she didn't burn my skin... second red flag! She lacked technique, left a lot of hair and I am completely dissatisfied. Even though I repeatedly told her to please pay extra attention to a certain area that always goes ignore. She didn't listen and I was left half done. During my session, she left to grab something from reception and left the sliding door wide open where anyone can see me on the table. I did Eyebrow Reshaping (where she used a combination of waxing, scissors, and other tools to reshape my brows perfectly to suit my face), as well as a Facial session. I tried out the 'special' for first time spa users here, which was $180, and later, I requested to try out the wax for my underarm, which costed an additional $20. However, after checking the website, she charged me regular price since none of the specials listed cost $180. It's not a matter of ignorance either, since she acknowledged it was my first time at a spa, and I mentioned it several times as well in both English and Cantonese to her. I also accepted her $20 wax package to try out on my underarms, and she also did my face without me asking, so I thought it was part of the package--she also charged an extra $20 for that. I pointed that charge out, so she took back the extra $20 charge; I guess she knew and was trying to get a little more money out of me. A large chunk of the spa was mostly lying on the irelaxbot robotic massage bed. So basically a fancy massage bed. It is mostly for comfort, and feels very weak, and as someone with a very high pain tolerance and scoliosis, this did nothing for me, and even the spa lady acknowledged that it takes multiple trips to the spa just to feel any difference. From experience, I know a single trip to a massage therapist can help realign your neck and cost less than this. The facial and facial massage, however, is a completely different story. I don't know exactly what she did to my face, but I think it was some sort of intuitive spa thing, where she noticed I had sun spots, acne, and a few wrinkles popping up, so she worked with what she had to try and correct them. It was so relaxing, at some point, I fell asleep a little, and that's saying a lot, because I have had insomnia stress issues for weeks now. After the facial, my face was glowing; The sun spots on my face diminished significantly, and the sagging around my neck diminished significantly as well. I used to have an issue where I'd scratch my face all the time, and after the facial, it stopped feeling itchy. Not sure what she did or what happened, but despite the cons, it was worth the trip trying once. I recommend the facial, but the massage would be better done by a Swedish deep tissue or Thai massage. And make sure to double check the charges before and after. I would have rated a couple more stars higher if her charging was honest, and she talked a bit more about the procedure before doing it, since she will add a procedure and then charge without saying a word, but the atmosphere and quality of the actual facial felt very nice, and results for the facial were overall positive. read more

I was in Oakland for the day so decided to try out this place for a facial. I had Lanny. Her English wasn't perfect, and I think she might be new because she was asking the owner a lot of questions throughout, but the experience was still great. The best part was the face, neck, and shoulder massage; it was extensive, and the pressure and areas she covered were just awesome. The massage part alone makes me want to revisit, and I will when/if I ever drop by Oakland again. At the end, she spent a lot of time teaching me about how to take care of my face, which I really appreciated. Very nice lady, just be patient as the communication can take some time. I think the only (very tiny) flaws would be the fact that they don't seem to have everything they need in the room; she was constantly leaving to get products/tools. Also, I think they use napkins to clean up each phase of the facial, and I personally prefer hot towels. Finally, they might leave your door open, then talk with people outside the room, so that might kill the relaxation vibe if you need total solitude and privacy. I personally was fine with it, but I can see how others might not like this. To me, these are really minor things and didn't take away from the facial itself. Rip me off!!!! I called and asked for the price of the facial before making the appointment! It confirmed that $100 dollars for the first time treatment. When i arrive the shop, the person who in charge the shop, open the door to me and ask me to wait for her. I entry the treatment room and the facial treatment is beginning. The lady does not tell me that the facial items have been changed for what reasons. Nothing telling me about the prices need to upgraded and what kinds of the items have been changed! Once she completed the skin facial treatments to me, she needs me to pay for $180 dollars for the treatment! That's rip me off! She should tell me before or when the facial is beginning. WOW, that was the BEST facial and massage I have had in my entire life! I got a Lymphatic Drainage massage on Groupon. I didn't know what to expect, but it blew me away. Then she offered me a facial which was out of this world - amazing traditional gua sha techniques, stuff they do at Face Gym (but there's no face gym here in Oakland). This was a rough experience for me honestly. I came on a whim from a Groupon I purchased for a 1hr facial. The stairway up to the spa is a crusty carpet covered in dirt and crumbs. The first 15 minutes of the service apparently are for being in this enclosed steam bed where the face is exposed. I was left there for probably around 20 mins, I felt like it was a missed opportunity to do work on my face simultaneously and I don't understand the benefits of that bed. I was taken out of the bed and moved to a table. Throughout the service the esthetician continuously tried to upsell me on other services like a chemical peel or micro needling during that day without even considering what my life is like (you can't just go to work the next day after a chemical peel). When I asked her about the recovery times for those services she didn't give me a straight answer. When I asked about active ingredients in the offerings she did not answer. Both poor answers are perhaps due to her lacking the vocabulary. She offered me hair removal and lymphatic massage "for slimming"without me saying anything about it and it just felt like old school body shaming as a means of marketing. At the end she tried to sell me some service for $100 that I still don't completely understand what it was for. I told her I would see how I benefited from the service and think about it, and in turn she tried arguing with me how the service that day was not at all for skincare but for relaxation. Let me repeat, she was trying to sell me something and started to argue with me about it. NOT relaxing! My conclusion is that I simply have a completely different understanding and outlook of beauty and skincare. I'm very in touch with trends and I'm very invested in my own skincare. I did not feel like I was a client being cared after, more like a moving target trying to evade a business trying to take more of my money for offerings that would probably cause more harm than good. I know what lymphatic massage is for and to market it as a means for weightloss is misleading, irresponsible (what if I had heart problems? And had a heart attack?) and downright offensive if a client did not ask about it. If I had been a less educated customer with less self confidence they probably would have gotten a lot more money out of me during an appointment that was initially a $79 Groupon. Avoid this place. Totally unprofessional. Look at pics if you are even thinking about going here. I will absolutely never never go there again. Too many great places in the bay to pick from than to risk your sight here. I had my lashes done before my trip to Europe. The lashes were absolutely horribly. Both my eyelids were swollen and hurting for a whole week after my visit. My entire tip to Europe my eyes looked like I had been stung by bees. The eyelashes were totally uneven in length. An obscene amount of glue was used so much that the lashes were clumping together and my own eye lashes were just falling out underneath. I sent the owner a message about my unfortunate experience. She promised me an appointment where I would get the lashes removed and reinstalled for free. When I showed up for my appointment no one knew anything about it. The owner had not even bothered to notify the salon. I ended up paying another $90 for a semi removal as there was no appointments available for me that day. When I called the owner she said I needed to reschedule. I told her I wanted my money back which she said she'd give me back the following day. This never happened. I found Beauty Island Spa through Groupon and got the massage and facial. I had some misunderstanding between what I purchased on Groupon and what I got. I was under the impression I was getting a full massage and facial, which turned out to be a short, 10-minute massage, and then the rest of the 90 minutes was a facial. This is my fault for not checking with the Spa in advance. If you're thinking about getting the Groupon, double-check with the Spa before purchasing! Pros - Clean - Calming music Cons- - I wish I had been given more information about the facial, i.e., what she was putting on my face and what each step was for. It was concerning not knowing. - Lots of interruptions, the phone ringing, this took away from the relaxation part - Spa is very cold, even with the blankets - There wasn't a changing room or place where I could set my clothes and personal belongings. - In the middle of the facial, I was asked if I wanted to purchase an additional exfoliant for $20. I thought this was unprofessional and made me feel awkward. I found out after leaving that this should have been included in the Groupon - My credit card was also charged twice. Overall the experience was just okay. If you're thinking about going here, I would recommend getting the massage and skipping the facial, which I didn't see any benefits from and was concerned about the products she was using. read more

Honestly, only came to this salon because of the enticing groupon offer- 17$ for a gel manicure. This place is on the bustling streets of Telegraph Ave, so parking is horrific. If you're lucky, there's a 2 hour street parking located up the street on 24th. I kid you not, I was there for 1.5+ hours for a gel manicure. I did have gel polish on before that she had to soak off, but I do not have that much time to spare. The chairs are uncomfortable and rolled around every time I repositioned. Each nail took almost 2 minutes to paint one coat, and because I chose a lighter shade, she had to do 3 coats, which turned out bubbly and uneven. My nails didn't even turn out to look like someone worked over an hour on! My nail shapes and length were uneven. Very disappointing. But I was desperate to get my nails done.
