Update: I was instructed by staff to purchase more items because my total was under $5. This is because I chose to use a credit card. Based on my research, I learned that some merchants cannot require a minimum. I then left the items behind because they truly wanted cash. This is predatory in nature due to the proximity to Howard University. Based on my analysis, so many college students are "strapped for cash". A beauty supply store should not be predatory in nature. This is why I chose not to purchase anything from this store and I will never return. Often as a reviewer, one will have to allow the company and the representatives of the company to try again. But after being, what I feel, "in my opinion" as scammed with predatory practices, I will absolutely never return. read more

I don't typically write reviews, but if you have the means to avoid this place, definitely avoid it. Terrible customer service, marked up prices (found all the items I purchased on Amazon for cheaper), and poor selection. I came here to buy products for a new hair endeavor, but decided against it and re-did my usual braids. I ended up not using any of the products and came back to return them as they were no longer needed. I came back within the 14-day return window, and they would not accept my items. They accused me of opening and using all of them - even though I had not touched the products since the day I bought them. I brought them back in the exact condition that I purchased them along with the original receipt, and they refused to refund me. They almost gaslit me into thinking that I had used them and forgotten, but I bought these products for a wig I did not end up purchasing! So I am definitely sure that I did not use them... Shocked and confused, I decided to check the items on the shelves and saw a few products that had broken seals just like mine. I told them this, and they still would not accept my items. I simply left the items there because I had no use for them, and I will happily take my business elsewhere in the future. I am sure they put the items right back on the shelf, and as a warning to future customers (if you unfortunately decide to come here), please make sure that the items you are buying are actually new so you are not scammed like I was. In order for me to write a review I had to give them a star when I think they deserve nothing. We bought 3 hair and scalp moisturizer (brand we use all the time) because we go through them fast and don't have the time to keep going backs to Beauty Island. However, the ones we got was a bad batch. Tried to return and they gave us run around by saying they could not give us refund without the Owner. BS. No refunds or replacement. Absurdly expensive products. Sadly with the flux of investment in historically black Shaw/U st corridor there's the precipitous decline in stores catering to African Americans. It's awkward for all the new residents. If you're black, distressing, when you can't get the essential/niche products that make you look "proper" for said residents. Beauty supply stores used to be a dime a dozen but now I have to pay a whopping $19 for shampoo that I can get from Amazon for $10. Great selection of African American hair care products at ok prices! Yes, for some products they are a bit more expensive than big box stores, but they literally carry every single product that I've needed! Supply store is located on the second floor up a flight of stairs, usually with a security guard standing at the entrance to prevent theft. Although I hate for someone to stop and check my bags after making a purchase, I've never had that problem or seen this happen here. The manager is literally always here and very sweet! He remembers your face and if you frequent he'll usually slide you a few shampoo and conditioner samples :) The young ladies are also very helpful and knowledgeable with the products and offer recommendations for stylists. read more

I've spent hundreds of dollars in this store and I'm normally someone who gets what I need and keep it moving, so I previously ignored the reviews! I'm telling you please do not give these people your money! Unfortunately it's too many that make money off of blacks and don't know how to coexist and feel that customer service isn't needed. Stores like this are the main reason people shop online. There's a huge lack of transparency at this store. I went there yesterday for the first time and a woman helped me pick out clip-in extensions. I explained that I'm unfamiliar with extensions and I'm not sure about the purchase. I asked her "What is your return policy?" She simply told me not to use or open the product to compliant with their return policy. I got home and realized I would never use it and reached for my receipt that was stuffed into the bag to see that they don't offer refunds or exchanges. How convenient to state that on the receipt once the purchase is made and never speak of it when a customer is asking. I called the next day and explained this incident with the person who answered and the manager, Maria, who then brought over the woman who helped me. She lied through her teeth and told her manager that she explained the store policy in detail. I can't explain how frustrating it is to deal with people in retail with no regard to their customers. Sneaky place. Be careful. It's unfortunate that they won't take the product back because I have not and will not use it and I've already disputed the charge. I suggest using one of the many online stores that offer returns and exchanges and actually treat their customers with decency. read more

I will just shop online. This has been my go to for beauty supplies since moving to DC area, mainly because they more accessible. Truth be told I use to travel to NYC to get products because the stores out here are terrible but the pandemic stopped that. The store has an outdate debit/credit card system, half the times I'm told their machine doesn't work and they don't take cards. For the brands they have , they carry a lot, which is mainly ORS, Taliah Wajd , Creme of Nature and very limited Carol's daughter . But They are missing key brands including Camille Rose, TgIn, limited Shea moisture , TCB, Alikay , Jane Carter, Melanin, uncle funky's daughter. They definitely limited on Black owned hair companies. So i usually end up picking up 1-2 products, its not worth the visit. And the attitude of the ladies working there could improve . read more

This business should set and stick to operating hours that it is comfortable with. It's not respectful to announce to your customers that you need to close the register 10 minutes before closing time. Nor is it professional to deny customers entry to your store 10 minutes before the posted closing time. I inquired with an employee about this, and basically they just really want to shut down and have everyone out of the store by the posted closing time. I suggested that her manager post their closing time as 30 minutes earlier - preventing new customers from entering while continuing to service customers that may still be in the store. She wasn't unpleasant, but she was clearly annoyed by the conversation. It seemed like I wasn't the only customer to have brought this up. Oh well. There aren't alot of beauty supplies in arlington where I live and I ran into this one after getting my hair cut down the street. I think it's okay. they don't have a huge selection. The did not carry the dye I prefer to use but they have everything a black woman needs to survive in this world. I even like their cosmetics section for my LA Girl Pro Concealer. They also have a beauty club for you to earn points! I will say I bought the 2L jar of eco styler for about $14 and today I went to sallys for my dye and saw the same huge gel for $8... that kinda did annoy me a bit but I'll just remember to go to sally's for those two items. I won't go out of my way to come here but if I'm near by I will certainly slide through for my essentials. read more

I love this store. I usually come here for the adore hair dyes when I'm dying my hair crazy colors and they have all the supplies you need. The wig girls in the back are super helpful too. Such good prices! I wanted to buy a black wig to hide my pink hair for and interview once and the staffer helped me look through different wigs and even told me how to wrap my hair so I could fit my hair under my wig. Worst experience of my life they are located on the corner of Florida and 7th where a lot of blacks live I just moved to the neighborhood and entered the store I was followed around even though i looked far from broke but I am African American so they just thought I was going to steal I got what I needed and when I got the register I asked the cashier what was that about she ignored me and mumble some shit that sound like " for safety " I went off and said I pretty sure I make more money than you and I'm the customer if me and every other black person stop shopping your done she didn't say anything. Amazon sold it for twenty dollars cheaper. I went to take it back the next day, unopened and they said "no returns unless its makeup." I went to this store on Sunday and bought some hair. After the cashier handed me my receipt I noticed she had charged me for an item that I did not purchase. She apologized and admitted it was an accident. It's okay, accident happens. The issue I have happens after she calls the other cashier over to help. They both inform me that they could not give me my money back, even thought they both knew she charged me for an item I did not have. They offered me a store credit instead. I asked to speak to the manager, but they said the manager was not available. They said my only option was the store credit because they could not put the money back on my card. I accepted the credit, but I would have much rather had my money back considering the cashier admittedly made the error. read more

She was aggressive and rude when I asked for the price of an item she said she wasn't going to look up the price and if I want it I should go to the Register and just buy it! Why do folks come on Yelp and review on everything BUT the nature of the business? This is a BEAUTY SUPPLY STORE and their inventory is excellent. They have almost anything the average person who takes care of their hair could want. I've noticed other reviewers mention that they don't hold true to their hours (but mention nothing else about the actual store). That hasn't been my experience, but this is Yelp not the Better Business Bureau. This beauty supply is the worst I've ever been to. I've called in advance on 3 separate occasions ahead of time to confirm they had in stock the product I needed. Over the phone there response would be "Yes we have the product your looking for. When I would go to the store the same day I called the item was not in store. I was so happy to find a store that had everything I needed in stock. The workers in the store were friendly, the downstairs neighbors not-so much. My go to beauty store. I come here quarterly when I get my hair done at my salon nearby. Where I live we don't have real beauty stores like this one, so I have to wait until I come here to get sleep caps, black castor oil and other beauty products you won't find anywhere, but at niche stores like whole foods (in the whole body area). they have literally everything you want here,...including weaves, wigs, every hair accessory you can imagine,...although some of their stuff is cheap.
