Okay in a pinch if you want to sleep outdoors. Being so close to NYC and a car-camping site, don't expect any quiet outdoor solitude. I camped here in the autumn of 2019. I am more than satisfied with quality of this place. Everything is clean and quiet. Especially during the weekdays. Restrooms are perfect, they have everything including shower. Camp can accommodate any type of the vehicle. I would like to come here again. Ive been camping here for 27 years almost once every year since i was two years old. Always was a fun place as a kid, recently in the last few years. We have a new woman who runs the camp. She is so rude. I had a racist experience with an old white ranger and an old white state trooper. It started with the old white ranger screaming at me as if i was a child that i was not supposed to be at the lake at a certain time. Where is that rule ? And if it is why the fuck is it a rule ? Anyway instead of the trooper hearing my side he told me to go back to my campsite or get thrown out. People if u want quiet camping go to w section or a section , b, c , d, e is for people who enjoy camping with fun. People are so prude. read more

DISCLAIMER: This 4-star rating is not for the whole campground. Only the W section. I love the piece and quiet of nature when I camp, but will stay up [quietly] chatting/laughing by the fire until pretty late. I've stayed at this site 3 times, and have always had an amazing experience. Here's my tips: * I would never stay in any section other than the W section. It's the only area where people aren't stacked on top of each other, and there are fewer people using the bathrooms/shower. There is a basin for washing dishes. * The showers have hot water that they let you control the temp of. A very nice treat in the morning! Always been clean, but obviously there will be bugs since you're in the woods. * No curfew. (Great for me, but maybe not for older people/families) * The music that comes from the beach during the day is sometimes loud. The Lake Welch area is great, but pretty busy in the summer. * Bag of firewood costs $12. I usually just buy it when I check in, so I don't have to wait on the truck to drive around. (I actually didn't see it at all this last visit.) * Love that you have the option to hike or go to the beach at the same location. * Bugs manageable. I've only ever seen raccoons once. read more

There is no enforcement of the quiet time after 10PM. The partying, music, drinking atmosphere seemed to be encouraged. My call to the ranger to complain was met with annoyance. We finally got to sleep at 2AM There was litter all around our camp site that I spent 20 minutes cleaning up. this was the worst camping experience I have ever had. The only positive to this campground is its proximity to the city. If it wasn't for that no one would ever visit this campground as it is run like a day care. at all hours there are kids screaming and since there are little to no trees to separate you from your neighbors it becomes very irritating especially when the kids are up and screaming at 6 am. The staff was rude and very unaccommodating. the rangers where speeding through the campground at all hours (for a campground with so many children I find this to be dangerous) the campground was not even 25% filled and we had no privacy and heard all of our neighbors at all hours If you are looking for peace and tranquility this place is not for you if you are looking to relax look else where if you want kind and accommodating staff you will not find it at beaver pond campground I will never return to this campground ever on a positive note I do visit and love harriman/bear mountain and recommend it for the trails just wish they had a better competing campground read more

I stayed here a few years ago and had the worst experience ever! Quiet hours were NEVER enforced, price of the wood at the campground was too expensive (luckily I found some cheaper elsewhere), campsites were too close together and as luck would have it there was someone who killed another person in town who was on the loose near the park and the few people who were there (myself included) had to leave. Luckily I got my money back on the nights that weren't used. What a wasted vacation.....never again will I visit this park! read more

We have A large group of us that go to this campground every year and we enjoy it. We usually go in late May so it's not crowded and bathrooms tend to be clean for the most part. This is definitely a no frills kind of park aside from the lake and nearby hiking. It's a hit or miss for the most part on noise restriction / quiet time. Ive been camping all my life. Im 41 yrs old and as a kid we went to different campgrounds and all all had something amazing to offer.so i raised my children the same way and they always loved it. that is until this weekend. I wish i can offer zero stars because this is what this campground deserves. Our first few hours there we were harassed by the rangers. They parked around our site and shut the lights to their vehicles and watched us. The next morning 6:30am a lady was complaining on how loud we were, how we arrived so late to set up and made a lot of noise. at that point the ranger approached us and started to accused us instead of asking questions first. If your latest check in is 11pm then what time do you have for setting up? and if we were making so much noise then why didn't the rangers that kept passing tell us anything? The conclusion is the lady making the complaint was of-course white and we were spanish. So after an argument the ranger took her side. We also had a bottle of wine that we didnt think would be such harm. well apparently we are in the same class as those who beat their spouses or significant others and were evicted. no time to even eat that morning. So if you are looking for a campground where you can relax and have a few beers have a good times, share a few laugh and not have to worry about anything this is not the place. you will be looking for the rangers that sneak up on you at all times. From the moment you arrive they search your vehicle making you feel like a convict. they sneak up on you, and god forbid you are spanish or black. then you are done. I tried to over look the dirty bathrooms and not to mention some don't even lock. But for harassment like that i stay home and let the NYPD do the harassing. Worse experience ever. read more

Beaver Pond Campground is perfect for the beginner camper as I am. After reading reviews I was a bit leary about going there. I have to say it was nothing but great. The first time we went with friends and got sites next to, but not close to one another. Look at the maps before booking. The second time was just as nice. We were close to the lake and the staff and rangers were very nice. Our car actually died and the rangers boosted out battery with a smile!! I only wished that there was plush grass ground tent pitching instead of platforms that I fell off the side of and jacked up my leg. Also, the bathrooms could be cleaner. Anyway, it's also close enough to the city,NY which was perfect for us. Camp and enjoy! read more

Pro's: The campgrounds are well kept for such a busy campsite and I found the rangers and park staff were pleasant. There a man-made beach. There's a playground for little kids. In the early morning when it was quiet we were visited by a deer which was lovely. Cons; I had read the reviews before going but even so, I was amazed at the chaos. Our neighbors (three sites with about 300 tents on it) had extremely loud hard core rap and salsa all day long. They broadcast their musical tastes thru external car speakers hooked up to batteries which also powered their lights! These same folks walked into our campsite to look for wood and kindling without even speaking to us as we sat there! They walked into the woods on our site and started hacking down a tree. Since the area is the northeast I was tempted to suggest that going in flip flops might lead to tick / infection but I was so sleep deprived I didn't have the energy. They were asked to turn down their music but this often led to confrontations. Walking through the campground, loud music blared from many of the sites usually by music systems from vans and cars. I saw electricity extension cords being plugged into the washroom area and running to sites to power lights and music, with rotating teenagers 'on guard' to unplug them when the rangers came into view. Nothing if not organized. There was lots of smoke and not all from fires. At one point my little kid asked why people were smoking incense cigars. The beach was even louder than the campsite and even more crowded. At 6am on Sat there was a loud base thump from somewhere. Our neighbors used their car alarms as actual alarms to wake up those who were sleeping at 8am. Not kidding. read more

If you are looking for a chill laid back campground where you can relax and enjoy nature with privacy and seclusion, this is not the area to go to. Many people crowded close to one another takes away from the authentic camping experience. I highly recommend checking out other places higher north or out in PA even. Some friends and I wanted to hang out and drink beers in peace and we constantly had little kids running around or park rangers snooping in on us. read more

This is a cute park. Bathrooms are clean. Their park office was nice and accommodating. Ignore the other reviews and give it a chance. I would recommend booking site D2 or one of the W sites. We did deal with one loud group but the park rangers came and shut them down quickly. Follow the rules, respect your neighbor, and you'll have a great time. Firewood is sold in plastic wrapped bundled at $8 a piece, a little pricey but it lights right up. Buy it at a nearby store before getting to the park if you want to save money. They do have a camp store with the necessities if you do forget something, but there are also stores nearby if they don't have it. Will deff be going back next year! The beach and volleyball court looked lovely even though we didn't utilize it (stayed 9/14). Great place to stay if visiting Bear Mountain or if you are into craft brews and wineries. I recommend visiting Palaia winery for a unique experience :) read more

Came thru this area last week. Called ahead after getting off I95 due to accident and alleged 2 hour delay. I called and advised the lady I was driving a 28 ft motor home with a 20 ft trailer. Upon our arrival, after 30 mile ride, paid and was sent to a tent site! I called the office and was advised that the trailer sites were filled! I reminded her that I called and was advised that a site was available to wit she replied, we can't hold a site on just a phone call... I was unable to park my rig at a tent site, and requested she refund my monies(28.00) however she said she could not do it but would the next day with a supervisor. I continued on my journey. I called 3 days later to inquire about my refund and was told a supervisor would call me. I have now returned home, 10 days later and have not heard anything. Poor customer relations... I have not received a refund and am unable to hear from a supervisor. read more

I've made a few trips to this campsite and am very satisfied with it. The sites with the tent platforms are closer together and large groups with children reserve these. You have to drive by them when exiting and entering the campground and the groups are usually pretty civil, and have lots of children playing and riding bikes. I like a little more space and privacy so I like to reserve in the wooded areas, hence the "W" section. The bathrooms are cleaned on a regular basis and the grounds are immaculate, I would like to thank the park workers, Enrique and Anthony for keeping the grounds super clean! lol There is a private beach that connects to Lake Welch Beach with a lifeguard. People walking in from Lake Welch beach are stopped by the lifeguard and told that area of the beach is only for campers and are turned around. The park rangers are very visible and so it keeps trouble at bay. If you want to walk to Lake Welch beach you can since the gate is open while the beach is open. There you can use the bath house, outdoor showers and there is a concession stand that sells pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers, ice-cream, ice, and other beach items, etc. The only negative thing I would say is that the paperwork given when checking in should reminder you to place all coolers, food and trash in your vehicle. My boyfriend and I forgot one evening and a bear reminded us! He pulled the cooler through our screened tent and most likely scared himself away when the cooler slammed onto the ground! lol Other veteran campers in the "W" section said they had similar experiences in years past when they left food out. One left glazed donuts out during the day and was scared away by a park ranger with a simple air horn, the other left food in a soft cooler that was never seen again and left the camper without breakfast! lol I will definitely continue camping here because it really is beautiful and watching deer grazing nearby is pretty awesome. So remember food, trash, toiletries in vehicles= a nice camping experience close to the city. read more

Great for a weekend family getaway. We were in section B -- there were a lot of families around us but the bathrooms and showers were never crowded. Bathrooms are clean and showers have hot water! It's supposed to be quiet time after 10, but you're still allowed to talk quietly. There were loud tents, but it didn't bother me and my family. If you want peace and quiet, this might not be the place to go. Overall, great time and not too far from the city (New York City)! read more

This campground is nothing special. We arrived on Sunday afternoon, and there was a ton of people there!! They were also very loud, especially at night. If you are going to stay here, stay in the W section! The campsites are relatively separate from each other, but also not many people are around in this section. When we arrived, we stayed at campsite W11, and thank god too! There were maybe 5 campsites in use as opposed to 20. By the time we left on Wednesday, most of the campsites cleared out, even in the crowded sections. But in the W section there was one campsite in use when we were leaving, so weekdays are definitely better. The worst part was the bathrooms. DISGUSTING! They smell like a horse farm. The shower turns off after 20 seconds or less, and then you have to push the button again to keep turning it on while you shower with mosquitoes, daddy long legs, and more gross bugs. It is really gross. I didn't like using the bathroom, nevermind the showers. Maybe I'm spoiled because a campsite in Virginia near Shenandoah that had hot showers, door with a lock, and most of all CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! I was disappointed in the "beach" on Lake Welch. I would never stick my big toe in that lake if you paid me. We took a walk to see it, and saw a dead baby rat floating near the weeds. Also the people who stay at this park are not the cleanest. I also did not feel comfortable in a bikini around certain men that made up the majority part of the A section, so we skipped the beach for our trip. What I enjoyed were the deer. There was a doe and two fawns that come super close to us when we were in our campsite. And then in the field to eat and sleep in the W section. I loved that! The hiking areas near the campground such as Bear Mountain and Harriman State Park are nice too. Stony Point Battlefield is a nice place to check out too. We also saw a family of deer there too, which was great!! Soo the areas nice, but the campground could be better. It definitely has the potential to be nice, but the people who go there make it polluted and a bit trashy. We made the best of it, and had a good time, but I've definitely experienced better campgrounds before! read more

a quick hour ride from Manhattan. As we arrived, we were greeted by a couple of camp rangers. Friendly receptionist who told us that we shouldn't be camping in this weather since it was raining but overall she was nice and quick with our check in. The tents get set up on platforms rather on the floor which is good because rain can't go inside your tent from the floor. Clean bathrooms. Designated garbage disposal spaces. I would have enjoyed it if the weather would have been better. The lake shore which has a large area to swim was a 10 minute walk from our campsite. read more

IMO, the fact that it's so close to the city it's perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Yes, it can get a bit noisy at times, but I've learned to accept it. In general, when you're sharing a common place with others, there will be pros and cons as we're not all the same. The campground is very well maintained and the staff are very helpful, and pleasant. The bathrooms are clean, and the showers are large, making it very convenient for parents with children. I would suggest to hit the showers late at night or early in the morning to avoid waiting. Lake Welch is absolutely beautiful, and there are an abundance of fishing opportunities for families and children (make sure you have a license). If you have a hand launched boat (Kayak, canoe and or inflatable) you can get a permit at the office for $30 for the season and are allowed to take your boat onto the lake. You will need to show life vests, whistle and there's something else but I cant remember. You also have access to the many other lakes and trails in Harriman State Park, which are all beautiful and offer many swimming, hiking, picnicking, fishing and nature watching opportunities. If you're looking for some fresh air, a chance to explore one of New Yorks most beautiful state parks (my opinion) and a chance to just enjoy the company of your loved ones then I highly recommend this place. The pros and beauty of the location out weigh the noise factor (and thats not all the time) by far. I will continue spending many weekends this year with my husband and son...fishing, hiking, swimming and enjoying each others company as we've done the last couple years. read more

Very disappointing. Campsites and tents are one on the top of another. Restrooms/showers definitely need much more attention than they receive. Post-Labor day weekend when you'd expect it to be nice and quite turned to be a nightmare. A crowd across from us were celebrating, screaming, laughing and smoking pot till 2:30am. Another big family decided to wake up at 6am and to loudly discuss plans for the day, close and open their car doors and trunk every couple of minutes seemingly making sure that the whole campground hears them. Later on during the day an owner of SUV on their site decided to entertain the whole campground with ethnic music from his car stereo system. Thankfully rangers were very responsive to the complaints as well as a very friendly lady from the office let us change the site after our sleepless night and early morning wake-up, pretty fast. But on the new site people were just walking through our site towards the lagoon as if it was abandoned place. I'd say if you are a camper who's looking to have a peaceful time to themselves and to enjoy the nature rather than loud ignorant and less-than-intelligent crowd, stay away from this place. read more

We were looking forward to our first camping trip with the kids but unfortunately our trip was cut short, and we had to return home early as we were literally attacked by ticks. I removed about 20 ticks from both of my kids, my husband and myself in total, and I am not counting the other two families that were together with us. I called the park the next morning to explain the situation and asked for a refund and after discussing with their supervisors they denied it. Unfortunately the park does not provide any warning via their website and supposedly only has a sign in the park check-in location that nobody even noticed. I strongly believe that it should be their due diligence to provide in advance warning and unfortunately the park does not care to do so even though there are cases of Lyme disease in the neighboring area. This review is a warning for those who choose to visit the area especially if you are bringing small kids. Beware! read more

Not a place to be if you are not WHITE.... Very Prejudice and they will pick on you if you are not one of them if you know what I mean. My family and friends camp together every year and we went there last July 4th 2011 and my group got pick on all weekend long except for my friends which there group was all WHITE. They walked around with a can of Bud in there hand and the rangers said nothing to them. But my group held a wine cooler... we were forced to dump it out or GET OUT. Worst part was, my friend's group kept on drinking away with no one saying anything to them. Later that night, one of my friend drank way too much and died the following morning. I wished the rangers made them dump the boos too , if they did he might still be here. But instead they picked on us and gave my friends group the special treatment because WHY???? They were WHITE. May his soul rest in peace and the rangers ruin our weekend of family fun and poker. read more
