Our family went for the first time last night. The food was delicious. We had a variety of items including crab legs. Everything was hot and plentiful. The hushpuppies were so good it was difficult to stop eating them. The service was wonderful. Everyone was friendly and helpful. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Went to eat about 2:30 this afternoon. Hardly anyone there so there's no excuse for the nasty greasy food they tried to serve. I tried my best to eat what I could and what was edible which was only the deviled crab and fries. I got the deluxe plate with shrimp, scallops, oysters, and flounder. After eating the undercooked oysters that about made me gag, I had enough. My food was falling apart from being so saturated in grease. I've worked at a few seafood restaurants and grew up on seafood. This was not it. There's too many places around to eat at for this to happen. I probably would've let this go but the manager or owner who took the plate off the bill, still felt the need to charge for the fries and deviled crab. How petty do you have to be to charge for these when it's a plate of pure grease that was served to me. Becks is an old favorite and we were surprised to discover that it's been completely renovated to a more upscale version with a bar. I was braced for the worst, but the food quality and reasonable prices are still here. They make their own cocktail sauce which is heavenly. Cleanliness could be a bit better, but we arrived at the end of the lunch rush so I'll give them a pass. We'll definitely be back. read more

Upon entering the restaurant we were immediately seated at a nice clean table. The place was not crowded for a Friday night. We ordered calamari to start. before the calamari came the waitress (who was extremely pleasant) brought out a basket of hush puppies. they were served with honey butter which was a nice touch. The calamari came out in just a few mins and was hot and fresh, however, it had been cooked in old oil where it was obvious something had been burnt in the oil. the calamari was not burnt and was cooked well, other than it was gresay and had a burnt taste due to the old oil it had been cooked in. it was truly a shame as we could tell it was fresh cut calamarI. I had shrimp and clam strips. my shrimp was delish but the clam strips must have been cooked in that same oil. not good My husband had flounder and clam strips. His flounder was good but had bones. His clam strips were cooked with mine so they were the same. When our sweet waitress came back to check on us we told her the issues we had and she went back to talk to the owner. we were not after a discount on our meal. We just felt the they needed to know . I usually get the Low Country Crab Bisque and/or the lunch special with deviled crab and Calabash style shrimp. First time visit here even though my parents have lived down here for 11 years now. I got the clam strips with fries and coleslaw. They were so yummy and fresh (slightly fried more than I would have liked, but still tasty enough for me to eat them all. I would definitely come back to try more on the menu. The food was good and portions were large. I had shrimp salad and hubby had small seafood platter. Both of us are now miserably full, but that's the mark of a good restaurant. This place was slamming, and for a good reason. This is some of the best fried seafood I've had. I got the deluxe seafood platter. Spouse & I had an early dinner at Beck's a couple nights ago after sitting in the car googling reviews for seafood in the area, given that our "go-to restaurant" at the beginning of this corridor of seafood houses is closed on Mondays. Beck's seemed to have the best, recent review. Upon entry, my first impression was that it was open & airy with dark (faux ?) wood floors, tables & chairs with white plantation shutters & beadboard partitions. The decor was simple, budget-conscious, and family-friendly. I was quickly struck by the hostess, an older adolescent, who appeared to be friendly (i.e., flashing a smile that quickly disappears) who showed us to our table, dropping our menus there & left. But as is the case with interactions, in general, & service, specifically, there's a very big difference between "appearing to be friendly" and sincerely being "warm" (i.e., making eye contact, waiting for a customer to be seated to hand them a menu, making conversation). That was my impression of the staff in general. Further, the floor needed sweeping & the white partitions needed some serious touch-up paint and the ladies room needed attendance. This is all a backdrop to the fact that the dining room was still quite empty & from where I was seated, I was able to observe several staff (mostly but not entirely teens) huddled around the hostess station, happily bantering, and texting. One even playfully swatted the other on the rear with a fly swatter...EEWWW!!! Seriously?! I'm eating!!! And, no, he/she did not immediately leave to wash their hands. So...why aren't these people WORKING?!! There was a manager on duty (I learned at the register). How a manager/owner could tolerate such WASTE is beyond me. It was hard to watch. For the food, it was....good, I guess. We both ordered combo platters; I had shrimp & oysters (fried) & the oysters were my favorite part of the meal. They weren't as good or sweet as our "go-to" place next door but I did enjoy them. The coleslaw was disappointing...nothing more than what you'd pull from the shelf at the grocery store...ick! I switched my French fries for a baked potato. The first one was hard & undercooked. Our server brought another that was better. I inquired whether it was cooked in the microwave; however, she stated that they were baked in the oven. I have some doubts given their lack of flavor typical for microwave preparation. Although my husband finished his meal, I had enough to bring home that we shared as "appetizers" so the portions were generous & were served hot & surprisingly fast. My wife and I have another spot in Calabash that is our "old faithful." That being said, after our second visit to Beck's -- the first several years ago, before their fire -- we're putting this on our list of regular places to frequent in Calabash. My wife had a lunch special: deviled crab and flounder with a baked potato (only .25 extra) and cole slaw. I had the stuffed flounder with a baked potato and cole slaw. My wife was very happy with her selection. My stuffed flounder -- it was actually two pieces of flounder with the stuffing (crab meat and shrimp) between the two pieces -- was exceptionally good. Our server was attentive and pleasant. The hush puppies, brought to us fresh from the frier, were fabulous. Beck's opened in 1940 in Calabash. It is no wonder that they've remained in operation for 79 years. Highly recommended!!! read more

We've been to Beck's several times before and it's always good. This time was great. I usually get the fried shrimp, which is delicious. This time I got the crab cake appetizer as my meal ka(and ordered a baked potato to go with it. For $9 I got 2 good size crab cakes with actual visible chunks of crab meat. The flavor of them was excellent. I'll definitely get them again. Beck's has a the best hush puppies in Calabash. They are a good consistency, not grainy... And they are served with honey butter, which just puts their deliciousness over the top. My husband isn't a seafood lover, but he got the hamburger steak and said it was good. Interesting place to try out. Portions for platters were large. But I would give 2 stars overall except for one thing... My plate of scallop gold! Even though they charged me 2$ extra to broil, they were fabulous and plentiful. We laid 32.99 for AYCE crab which some in my party had. Kids menu not good and portions small.. We got the 2 type platter w shrimp and clams and it was 7$ with only fries as a choice, no drink, no slaw, no choices other than fries w out up charge. The shrimp were popcorn shrimp and a very small handful all together. No healthy choices at all.-- all Fried. We ordered a side of crab clusters to add on to a seafood platter. Came out very small compared to the other crab clusters. So be aware that the clusters vary greatly in size when you consider ordering AYCE vs the dinner plate vs a side of one cluster. You could a nice juicy one or a tiny skinny wasted runt. If it's AYCE and u get a skinny one or two fine, but if you order one for a side at 7$ and it comes out a runt.. That's a shame. Hushpuppies are like that fried carnival dough with out powdered sugar. Tasty though. All in all, we paid 42$ for a kids meal, scallops and a crab cluster side, waters for all and tip. Our friends paid 75$ before tip for AYCE crab and 2 sodas... Super expensive and although the broiled scallops really were great, I wouldn't return bc of kids choices and lack of alt sides. read more

OMGOODNESS!!!!! They play Christian music!!!!! The prices can't be beat, I don't know how they make money? Service is exceptional. Very low key and friendly. Only just started on the hush puppies So I'll finish this in a minute. Okay, my husband ordered the Lunch Special of fried flounder and clam strips and I ordered the lunch Special of deviled crab and shrimp. They both come with hush puppies and Cole slaw with French fries. How do they make money? For two it was less than $20 minus the tip which was generous because we were very happy with our food and service. I'd recommend Beck's to anyone. Great place to eat!! read more

There's just something about this place. It isn't fancy yet my family has been coming here since the 1960s. My father even admits to going multiple times while in town visiting the area beaches. They recently remodeled and there is usually a wait during the peak times. The parking is free and they have a big lot. They are located right across from our favorite place to shop in Calabash. The location is easy to find and can't be beat. As long as Becks is around our family will be there. read more

So its a great place for all you can eat crab legs without the buffet line. The crabs legs had a very good taste. You can get an entire plate of crab legs for $24 or all you can eat for $32, so all you can eat is definitely the better deal. Each round comes with a baked potato. I also had the crab cake sand which, wasn't the best. Mostly bread. The staff was friendly and on this Sunday night it was busy but immediate seating. My friend has chicken fingers and fries and it wasn't the best. The broiled shrimp and fish was great. I probably would only come back for the crab legs though. One of only a couple restaurants on this little restaurant row to be open for lunch. Lunch special 5.99 - choose 1 or 2 (or maybe 3) of fish, shrimp, deviled crab and maybe another. Comes with fries, cole slaw and I think hush puppies. The puppies were addictive - almost like doughnuts. I ate 5. The shrimp was good. The fish was odd - very thin fillets with skin left on and overcooked I think, too dry. There were other interesting things on the menu but the lunch special was such a good deal our whole table ordered it. Atmosphere - a little dated but fine with a nautical theme.
