First of all, our sever was so friendly and helpful so I don't want you all to think the service was at all inadequate because it was on point. The food on the other hand was subpar. Used to come here when it was The Meetinghouse -- which I liked a lot, despite it being rather pricey. Well, fast forward a few years: This place is still rather pricey, but something fails to work this time around. Maybe it's this: In trying to be tres hip, it lost some of its old upscale ambiance that was perhaps what I was paying for.... In any event, for lunch the personal pizza was decent, but some of the other lunch menu items carried price points that verged on the silly. Maybe its time for Bedfordites (Bedforders?... My husband and I have been to Bedford 234 several times. The service is wonderful and the food exceeds our expectations. The chef is very creative and is always adding new food ideas to the specials. Flavorful food and a warm atmosphere! This was my second time dining here- I came once for lunch and once for dinner- and both meals were delicious! I think dinner stood out more for me. I had the grilled octopus appetizer and the striped bass special as my entree. Both exceeded expectations and left me very full (portions are on the larger side). Service was great both times! Waiters were very personable and the food came out pretty quickly. The reason I'm not giving t 5 stars is because its a little pricey. But so good! So I'd say it's worth the splurge. Meh. Poor service, food is overpriced and really not very good. Place is well decorated an all, but it took 15 minutes at least to get bread and water at the table, another 10 minutes to put our order in, another 30 minutes to get our food even though it wasn't very crowded. The food was not very tasteful and it was super greasy. I will say that they have a good burrata dish and they served a nice wild Mushroom side but the fish and chicken entrees we had were just not good and cost over $25 each. Got the feeling that the staff felt they were too cool for school and didn't really care about offering a good, quick and professional dining experience. They were definitely not friendly. It's a shame because it's one of three restaurants in the village of Bedford but I definitely wouldn't recommend this place unless you like being treated like you're not welcome in an expensive place with blah food. read more

From the avocado fries and hangar steak my first time, to the wings and seared tuna my second, and now the hummus and chopped salad... truly delectable across the table. Cute decor, but food is just okay. Pricey for the quality of the food. The chicken BLT was not proportioned well. It a super small slice of chicken, really was just a BLT and should be marketed as such, loads of bacon, lettuce that added no crunch or taste to the sandwich. The hummus was good. After having a wonderful Sunday meal here a few weeks ago, I was extremely disappointed in our experience last Saturday. Finding the restaurant no longer takes reservations, I called ahead of time to find out how the seating looked. We were told there was currently no wait and that our best chance of immediate seating was to hurry over, which we did. When we arrived there was no table for four available and we were told by the hostess to take a seat at the then-empty bar to wait. We ordered a round a drinks as the bar filled up. When 20 minutes passed and I noticed others were being seated, I checked with the hostess to find that she'd begun taking party names and we weren't on the list. I was told we'd be moved up to the top of the list. Another 20 minutes passed and I looked at the hostess's list--we still weren't on it. The owner of the restaurant who was in the area chatted with us and we told him the situation and were assured by him we would be seated within minutes. More time passed with no seating so we decided to leave. The bartender then took my friend's credit card for the round of drinks but returned the card without a receipt. A few minutes later the bartender put a bill for drinks on the bar. When told we'd already paid, she denied having gotten the credit card. My friend then gave her the card again, we paid, and left. At this point we had spent over an hour in the restaurant without being seated. While the food may be good the service here appears to be nonexistent. This restaurant has serious problems with organization and management. We certainly won't be returning. read more

An absolutely thoughtful restaurant. A train ride away from New York city, Bedford 234 is the epitome of small-town, family cuisine. The breadth of the menu makes it nearly impossible to hold back from trying more dishes than normal. would like to say we dined here, but we walked out. We called earlier to make a reservation for a Tuesday night dinner but were told that they don't take reservations. Arrived a little after seven and were not greeted at the door...were not greeted at all. In asking how long a wait, we were told about 5-10 minutes. Fifteen minutes later we approached the desk, to ask the best guesstimate for our wait time and were asked, "how many in your party?" There was a table for 12 in this small restaurant having dinner (and they had made a reservation). The decor is so cluttered that when a departing diner grabbed her coat in the entry way where I was standing, she knocked over a potted plant all over my shoes (staff was efficient and kind in cleaning it up). For my wife's birthday, we came here for brunch last Sunday. Having had fair to poor experiences with two previous visits, we decided to give it another chance as we live around the corner and wish this place would be as dependable as the Meetinghouse or before that the Butcher & Baker were. We were one of only four occupied tables so we were served our drinks right away. The waiter took our order for an Eggs Benedict and the omelet special. After waiting an inordinate amount of time given the lack of a crowd, our food arrived. My wife's Eggs Benedict was way overcooked and my omelet appeared to be a grilled cheese and ham sandwich. The waiter never made it back to our table until we finally got his attention and by then, I had already gone ahead and started on by "grilled cheese" and my wife was working on her eggs. She pointed out to the waiter that the eggs were overdone and he offered to redo the order, but she was half finished so she just asked for some more hollandaise sauce. I asked what I had on my plate to which he said, "That's the Cuban sandwich." I explained that I ordered the omelet and he also offered to replace the order. At this point, I just accepted the Cuban. When he returned with the hollandaise, it was a stainless steel cup with what looked like whipped cold, hard butter. My wife asked if it could be heated and he explained, "That's the way it comes." Really? When it came time to pay the bill, I looked at the check and it said $84 or so. I handed over my credit card and when he returned with the receipt, it read $32 or so. I went to try to find the waiter, who had disappeared again and when I did find him I asked if he had comped some of our meal and showed him the two different amounts. Without missing a beat, he said, "Oh, I charged your card to the wrong table. May I have your card back so I can charge the right amount?" Really? We had hoped the third time here would be the charm but, needless to say, we will not be coming back. Pity. read more

Strange reservation policy. Nine accepted before 8:30. But never mentioned that if you call for a table at 8:15. Instead come on in and sit in a pretty tight bar for 45 minutes waiting for a table while someone with an 8:30 reservation sits down at 8:40. Hey - we could have an 8:30 reservation too and actually been there at 8:30 if the restionist had thought about it . Food was ok. Better than Meeting House but not sure worth waiting that long for a table. And then the restaurant is EMPTY after 9 so they should organize their customer flow a little better. The people on the next stool told us if you want a drink in the bar you need to be your own advocate otherwise you can wait a long long time to be served. But when finally served very nice man at the bar and a good pour. read more

I totally understand why this place is rated between 2 and 3 stars. We were there at 2:00pm Sunday afternoon and it took forever to get our food. The wait staff was well meaning, but they all acted like it was their first day on the job. When my $18 burger arrived it was very tasty - However, it was rather small and it was $18. I asked for a side salad instead of french fries and ended up with a dozen pieces of arugula in a heap on the corner of the plate - Also, none of our burgers came with frizzled onions which are described on the menu - we had to remind our waiter of the fact. Had the burger which was delicious, in particular because the give you goat cheese as an option, which I hadn't had before. My girlfriend got the soba chicken salad and also really liked it. Service was excellent, and they brought out a water dish for our puppy (there is outdoor seating where you can bring a dog). AVOID! Promo says "food served with integrity and love". Ha! On a recent weekend night when the place was only half full, we waited 60 minutes for the salad, and then another 45 minutes for the entrees, the meat was cooked to "dry" when the request was for medium rare, the cake was a crusty several days old, and there was not even a manager to whom to escalate our concerns. For the same amount (or less), we could have had EXCELLENT food and pleasant, prompt service in a nearby restaurant with a renowned chef delivering on their promises. The owners/management don't seem to read or care about the consistently bad reviews. Diners honor their contract to pay for the food and drink they receive but there seems to be no corresponding obligation for BEDFORD 234 to provide good service and timely, well-prepared food commensurate with the prices charged. In a nutshell: Pretensions of grandeur and top prices without any integrity, love, or sense of obligation to the customer. read more

Everything our party of four ordered ranged from OK to Good with the following exceptions: Kale salad was wonderful (I'm not even a fan of kale), BUT two huge disappointments: the accommodation for my vegan wife was to serve her a large chuck of tofu; I can't think of a more uninspired presentation. I guess I expected so much more from the house made ice cream with gluten free brownie; that left me flat. Had been a while since my last visit to 234. Stopped in the other night and found a restaurant hitting their stride. Service was on point, timely and friendly. Clearly the regulars have begun to settle in and there is a great neighborhood vibe taking hold. The food was nicely presented and tasty. The menu has seen a few tweaks and revisions, all for the better. The offerings at the bar have become more extensive and compelling. The newly renovated space is warm and inviting. Had a frustrating experience at this restaurant. They don't take reservations, but our party of six was told over the phone that if we came at 7:30, we'd have perhaps a 15-minute wait. That turned out to be well over an hour, largely because there was a "ladies night out" table that simply wouldn't leave, even though the women had all finished their meal. I have some empathy for the restaurant on this, as it's awkward to ask them to move along, but--at some point, the restaurant has to politely say, we have other people waiting for the table, could we buy you a drink at the bar? (Especially because one of our party was nine months pregnant and really needed to sit down.) Management dropped the ball in not bringing them a check for over an hour after the table was cleared. The result meant that we were the last people to eat in the restaurant--and when we ordered desserts, they took about 25 minutes to arrive. We couldn't help but wonder if there was some correlation with the fact that the entire restaurant staff seemed to have retired to the bar to drink with each other. The manager comped our desserts, but still--it was ridiculous. The waiting-to-eating ratio of our meal was about 7:1. The food itself is solid--some hits, some misses, all generally farm-to-table-ly. It's not good enough to justify that level of service. If there were more options in Bedford, I suspect this restaurant would really have to up its game. read more

My husband and I had an excellent meal and experience last night. As vegetarians, we found truly unique and delicious choices, particularly on the appetizer menu. As portions are substantial,we even brought home extra. Really interesting ingredients including fresh figs yielding delightful flavors. Server was knowledgeable and very helpful. This restaurant is a dream. My friends took me here for my birthday and I could not have happier. Most- if not all- of the ingredients on the menu are locally sourced and fresh. I had the Quinoa bowl for my main course and it was flavorful, filling, yet "light" all at the same time. After dessert, I left feeling satisfied while not feeling "heavy" the way I do after eating at most other places. The restaurants commitment to using wholesome and locally sources ingredients is extremely admirable which is why I was more than happy to spend my money there. read more
