This is the kind of place you would see on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, but would never want to be on that show because the Oakland hipsters hate Guy Fieri. There is a small counter churning out burgers like the mac'n cheese burger, which is a burger with a slice of mac'n cheese in it. The burgers are juicy and messy. They are tasty. Get one. I love the mac'n cheese burger. They have a decent beer selection from local breweries. They have a full bar in the back also serving some potent slushies. (03/19/17) Stumbled upon this place last time in Oakland when I needed change for the parking meter at Drake's. This place has a real cool vibe. The crowd was mostly hipster for an area that can feel gritty if you're not familiar with the area. Art and random stickers/fixtures surround the walls, doors, etc. The tables are communal with a couple smaller ones at the back bar area. They serve beer and liquor. Some beer is on tap and the rest are in bottles or cans in the fridges that you can grab yourself. The selection ranges from "low end" Olympia to local 21st Amendment, Modern Times, ciders, and more. We got a couple beers and some food. The burger was delicious. For $10 it's nothing fancy but just a damn tasty burger. It comes with kettle chips as well. I will definitely come back here to hangout and peep the random art/stickers when the weather is a little warmer. read more

This was totally yummy food and drinks. I had the mango vodka (could've been stronger but still good) with Mac and Cheeseburger (very good). Fast and friendly. Inside and outside decorations were nice and interesting. Loved the skee ball that was there. For the outside, they do have heating lamps for cold nights. We went early evening so not crowded at all. Literally the best burger I've ever had in my life. I got the Telegraph burger with American cheese of course. When I cut into it, it was a bit more pink than I am accustomed to, but oh my goodness. Seasoned perfectly, juicy, amazing. My boyfriend got the Mac n Cheese burger and I felt the same (because I of course tried his). The Mac n Cheese was seasoned well, and paired well with the burger. So when I sit in the patio I have not only all the present aesthetic sweet street walls and a fence topped with wheels instead of razor wires and ink and skinny jeans and fedoras, expressive glasses clove cigarettes, dogs running and sometimes music, I also have the memories of how happy the boy pulled by the red balloon up past the Eiffel Tower made me when I could procure him that one murmur and take him home to fill the last spot on the last wall that wasn't filled. Add to the memory the words can't describe how good these sausages are! and there's no doubt - this place is special. John I think his name is is the fellow who cooked the curry chicken sausages I ate each time (sorry, when I find something that knocks my socks off I always go for a repeat performance). With a chips and a beer it more than made up for the fact that I had foregone Skates to come here for free movie night to learn that it had actually been the evening before. Oh. I've made the most of it when I've shown up at SFO when my flight actually left from OAK, when I checked in for jury duty a week before I was supposed to, when I confused my flight number with the departure time. Oh Magoo. I made the most of it then and I made the most of no free movie night. Telegraph is delicious. The patio is the perfect pit stop for an Avenue sojourn. Fresh beer on tap (last night it was Firestone Union Jack IPA), check. Fresh, local art (D Young V, Nite Owl, Eddie Colla, Hugh Leeman, FIlth Grime for February's First Friday art murmur), check. Jason L and John M serves up delicious sausage made in-house with a side of potato chips and charm. Make sure you check this place out before it blows up and becomes the next over-crowded place you can only visit during the week. We had the chicken apple and whiskey fennel sausages last night, with a couple pints. I had planned on trying the merguez too, but the sausage sandwich was so big I barely finished the first. We were topped off with a Pepples vegan donut for dessert, which they were kind enough to continue supplying (due to public demand). All I can say is, for $25 for two (before tipping the sweet guys working), it's a very satisfying way to fill your belly and enjoy a beer for the afternoon or evening. With more beer variety coming, within walking (perhaps stumbling?) distance from our home, and being in prime 'First Fridays' art murmur territory, Telegraph won't need to broadcast it's message of delicious sausage sandwiches, local beer and a great art scene/local hang out joint. Pre-fabricated dive. Some dives are a product of age and just the way they run things. Over the course of time, dives somehow became associated or synonymous with being "cool". Enter Telegraph...this dive was created to be "divey". But I'll give them this... it somewhat works. Huge space but it is 2/3 outdoors. So in colder weather, the usable space shrinks big time. Basically the indoors area are the kitchen/ordering area, a couple of bathrooms and a game lounge with an inoperable skee-ball (darn!). This area can accommodate 8-12 peeps, other than that, you're forced to be outdoors among picnic benches encompassed by graffiti'd walls. The menu is mostly burgers, some sausages and lots of pork oriented things. The smell of sizzling pork actually dominates the air in the indoor area. Burgers are all over $11. I liked them for the most part (very juicy), but felt the buns were completely underwhelming. If you're going through the trouble of including stuff like porchetta or kim chee on a burger, the bun should not be the sesame type out of a bag. But that's just my measely opinion. Kono Burger: Kim chee actually works on a burger. Nice crunch and tang, but could be spicier. Nice contrast. Squeal Burger: The menu states "slab" of porchetta on top. But the porchetta seemed like thin slices of pork like you see in a bowl of ramen. Rather tiny and did little contributing to the final product. All burgers come on a paper lined sheet tray with some kettle potato chips. The 5150 Burger is half ground beef/half ground bacon. It taste good, though you don't get a strong sense of bacon. I think it is because bacon needs to get fried and browned to totally get the true effect. Being ground up "inside" the meat made the patty more "hammy" than "bacon-y", if that makes sense. Small beer list, maybe less than 10 but all are craft centric. Full bar available in the outside bar, which was a surprise to me, but a pleasant one. Great spot to get a quick meal and a brew, like before a show. But I couldn't see myself lounging here for much more than that. It's like dining at a friend's house. Small counter with 4 stools, but a large beer garden patio area with benches set up. Small menu with a selection of house made sausages on one of those old school magnetic signs. I went with the banh mi sausage which was served up on a toasted roll and a handful of chips. Nice tang from the coleslaw and topped with cilantro. Paired with a Shiner Bock on tap and you got a meal even a hipster would love. As a true Southerner, I've found certain things a challenge since moving to the Bay Area 4 years ago. Things like traffic, loads of people, crime, etc... My personal struggle however has found me searching for comfort foods that no longer frequent menus the way they did back home. At the suggestion of friends, I found myself at Telegraph on a Saturday night looking to get some calorie loaded food into my belly. One Kono burger & a grilled cheese sandwich later I was satisfied but, I must impress upon you that though the burger was outstanding, the grilled cheese was UNBELIEVABLE! The bread to cheese ratio was perfect and the gooey factor, on a scale of 1 to 10, was (at minimum) a 12. It was sheer perfection, wrapped in utter simplicity. My friends and I stumbled here (okay I was the only one that stumbled) after a few drinks at Lost & Found. We were hungry, so we ordered food in addition to our beers. The service was alright, and the place felt kinda dingy, especially the single restroom. Just a different vibe I suppose... casual. The beer selection was decent (small and simple) and the tuna melt was pretty good! The one thing that stood out to me was the bread... interestingly enough. Telegraph has rows of picnic tables out on the back patio so take your pick. It's nice to enjoy beers with friends outdoors on a cool Oakland evening. It certainly looks like a coffee shop and a pub but just didn't seem like a place that serves food. The only menu available was written on a small chalkboard that was almost too easy to miss. Sausage sandwiches. That is all they offered. You choose from a handful of their homemade wieners. There might be a vegetarian choice somewhere but I didn't bother to look. Wild Boar & Pear. Beer Brat. Those two just looked most appealing to me for some reasons. The outdoor patio area was like a separate world. You are immediately surrounded by beautiful brick wall painted in colorful graffiti and bold wooden furniture equipped with umbrella. It was a lovely day and perfect afternoon to soak in some sunshine. I was beaming ear to ear once I took the first bite of my sandwich. The bread was authentic baguette used in Vietnamese banh mi. It was fresh, crispy and light. The sausage was meaty and juicy. Flavors were great and the texture was awesome. I took a few bites with some of their mustard sauce and a few bites without. When I went there I ordered the wild boar & pear sausage sandwich as well as the longaniza sausage sandwich. Both were INCREDAMAZING! The sweetness of the pear & slight gaminess from the wild boar really go hand in hand like Oakland & crime... The longaniza was sweet, crispy, and so aromatic. I love their slaw served on the side of the sandwiches, it really does help each bite go down smoother. It looks like they have quite a few beers on tap, the place looked very Oakland and hipster. We had a huge party (but had placed our order beforehand, so everything came out pretty quickly), and there was plenty of space for all of us. The burger was good! Pretty messy to eat though. The mac and cheese wasn't really sticking together, the server dropped off a fork which is definitely a necessity when tackling this burger. The block of mac and cheese needs to be more compact, so it can stay together. Maybe if it was cold it'd stay intact, but that'd be weird too. Cold mac and cheese and hot burger.. There's no good solution. Such sacrifices come at the price of having mac and cheese in your burger! A little pricey, but they have some pretty unique foods and beers. But when I walked in, it was like Mama Buzz decided to get all grown and turn into Telegraph Cafe--same hipster feel (beer, vegan treats, homemade kambucha), but with a....cleaner feel. Their patio area is so chill and relaxed, perfect for the sunny East Bay weather. I love the street art outside and also the exhibit they had up in the inside room. Of all the dogs, the banh mi was def my favorite. The boar & pear made for a close second. I ordered the longaniza (typical) but it wasn't the best, something was off with the flavor, like it reminded me more of... a different spicier sausage, not the Filipino breakfast sausage it gets its moniker from. I think the toppings and the bread made it, though. Perfectly crunchy crusted bread, but not enough to shred the roof of your mouth! Amazing! The owner Mr. John "Sausage" made an amazing transformation from the previous establishment in this same location to this new cool space! A lot has changed for good. One of such change is the coffee which was switched from Equator to Mr. Espresso. The good thing about Mr. Espresso is that a cafe can have its own blend of coffee so the taste of drip coffee can be its own face to the cafe. I really like the blend this place came up with. One suggestion, though, is that the potato chips that comes with the sandwiches should be something better, since the sandwich is in such a high quality and the generic salty chips shouldn't be with such a goodness. I would be happy even if the amount of chips is a lot less if I get a gourmet chips. The sandwich is too good to be sitting with those boring chips! One of the recommended sausages, "Wild Boar," is not actually wild. It's a name of boar that are farm-raised. The ancestor of this strand of boar used to be "wild" long time ago. There is also a second register in the back of the garden that has alcoholic slushies (what more do you want). I can only speak on the drinks but the food looked awesome. There is also a Happy Hour before 6pm, which is always a plus. We visited late Saturday night with a large crowd. They take reservations. The patio area is nicely graffiti'ed up and filled with benches. It was cold, but bearable, especially with a freshly drawn glass of beer. The inside area is small, but there is a room with a pool table & board games. I tried the chicken curry sausage sandwich, which was quite yummy and not as greasy as DH's pear and boar sausage sandwich. Agree with other reviewers...I couldn't identify those flavors at all. Both had homemade slaw, crunchy and spicy with jalapeno slivers. Bread could have been better, but it wasn't horrible. It was a bit bland and flaky/dry. Our friend ordered a sandwich without mayo and they messed up more than once. My sandwich took forever to be delivered. However, we did have a large group and they seemed to be doing the best they could. Sandwiches are served on a tray with kettle chips. At least that's what they looked like. Just like kettle chips. Agree with other reviewers that fries (especially sweet potato fries) would have been awesome. Beer, chocolate stout, was hearty and enjoyable. I noticed a subtle chocolate flavor. My brother went to pick up some food for us (take out). When he showed up to pick up the food and asked for some extra condiments. Ben the guy working at the front was like it's "all in the bag". He asked what was in there, Ben then said "you didn't even tip bro", and proceed to walk away, which was completely out of line. He had no business saying that to a paying customer out loud and also walking away before giving a chance to response. After waiting for him to return he was asked for additional sauce, which he responded to by repeating "you didn't tip" and walked away again. I immediately regretted to spend my money there.
