I'm still undecided if the surly guy behind the counter was funny or annoying. His flip attitude made me laugh, but really bothered my friend. However, I am inclined to think the guy was okay because when I was asking for recommendations he steered me toward the 50/50 burger, which comes with delicious crispy pulled pork on top of a juicy burger. I don't even like hamburgers that much and I ate the whole thing. Yum! Telegraph also has great beers on tap of which I am a huge fan. As a personal preference I think it would be awesome if they cleaned up the patio a little more. I know it's supposed to be Oakland gritty, but I'm not a big fan of not being able to tell if my table is clean because of the many layers of spray paint on it. read more

We came here because they had a vibrant beer garden and seemingly perfect small bites. Ordered a cider, beer, grilled cheese sandwich and a bag of chips (how hard is that?...), and it literally took 17 minutes. Being proactive, we went up to the order counter to inquire on our food, and saw our order sitting literally ON the counter. When the cashier finally returned, we pointed out that our order was ready, stagnant, and the irate response from the cashier was, "Well I've been bussing tables, sooooooo..."* It's not an easy job, but pretty easy to acknowledge that a $25 order of beer, grilled cheese and chips is actually ready; sorry guys, but here's an Oakland resident that won't be back. *Ironic, but this reflects other recent reviews on how the staff have been impatient & abrasive. read more

Accidentally ended up at this amazing beer garden because I misread a text from my cousin. Ended up ordering food and drink before I realized my (happy) mistake. The mac and cheese burger that I had with homemade kettle chips on the side was AH-MAZE-ING. Great flavor and sauce on top. I thought it was slightly overpriced but I'm a sucker for mac and cheese on anything. The staff was amazingly nice and helpful. As eclectic and as good as it gets; truly an Oakland, CA experience; we love this place! 1. The burgers are cooked so that they have that tasty "char" on the outside. Wow! As good as it gets! 2. This place has provided safe-and-pleasant outdoor dining since its inception; so, it was prepared for these current challenging times before they had arrived. The staff now all wear masks and take the temperatures of all patrons before admission into the venue. 3. The place is locally-owned, hires local staff, and has earned our consumer support. I drive over to this neighborhood bi-weekly from Marin County to pick up groceries at the Korean supermarket on the same block and reward myself (and my dog, too (the Telegraph staff will make me a burger patty without a bun for my dog and serve it to me in a paper coffee cup)) with the real "Oakland Renaissance" experience. I am truly amazed how this neighborhood has become multi-cultural, non-pretentious, and a safe destination. This was my first time ever eating Oakland and I'm glad Telegraph was my first stop from all the great options Oakland has! We came after First Friday so it was pretty crowded. Telegraph is an order at the front and seat yourself kind of restaurant. The vibe here is really casual and they have a ton of seating. Even though it was really crowded we were still lucky enough to find an empty table within 5 minutes. I ordered the tuna melt and my boyfriend ordered the Mac and Cheese burger. Even though it was super busy our food came out within 10 minutes. I absolutely loved my tuna melt! It's something that I normally never get, in fact I'm not even sure if I've ever ordered a tuna melt at a restaurant but this was delicious! I got a bite of the Mac and Cheese burger as well and that was also delicious! Overall, we had a great experience here. The food was delicious. Prices are affordable. Fast service. Odd, random, and welcoming is how I would describe Telegraph. I really like the ambiance of Telegraph with random drawings on the walls and long park benches to sit on. Since my cousin ordered for all of us during our grub crawl I'm not exactly sure what he ordered. I think he ordered a basic bacon cheese burger which is one of the best burgers I've had in awhile. It was simple, but done perfectly. One aspect that is often looked over is the bun. The bun was buttered and toasted and together with everything else was amazing. The other sandwich my cousin bought I think was the porchetta. I have pretty high standards when it come to porchetta and on a scale of 1-10 I would give this a 7. I wouldn't order it for myself but I would share it if someone else wanted it. Telegraph is definitely a spot me and my friends would hang out at if I lived here. read more

If you're looking for the best burger in Oakland, look no further. Telegraph is a wacky wonderful place that does their straightforward burger menu REALLY well. The burgers are big (6oz patties) and come with anything from classic toppings to kimchi, pulled pork and mac and cheese. They feature some sandwiches too which are good (tuna melt!!!), but the burger is really where they shine. Great outdoor space with lots of cool artwork, with heaters for when it's cold. Yes, we admit it! We are guilty of drunk yelping to stumble upon this fantastic spot. We had spent the evening in SF at a concert and were on our way home when we felt the urge to have a tasty, umami satisfying and quick burger. Telegraph was easy to navigate to--not too far off the freeway and plenty of street parking. The place seemed very low key and artsy in the best possible ways. We ordered beers and two burgers: the double burger and the 51/50 variation. It was impressive that our food came out so quickly and tasted so delicious! The burgers were perfectly cooked, well seasoned and paired with great produce. It almost seemed to good too be true to find this spot where we could relax and avoid pretentious attitudes. I've been several times since moving out here in 2018. Love the vibe, the art, the picnic tables, doggies allowed! I always got the black bean veggie burger, delicious! Today I tried the Impossible Burger instead, which I have had before at restaurants and at home. I took a bite and it tasted like a salt lick! That was all you could taste...SALT! ACK...threw it out. I also tried the Mac & Cheese...it was macaroni soaked in an abundance of oil with a thin coating of cheese flavoring....ACK! I also tried the home made pickles which I was excited about...love sour dill pickles...took a bite and my mouth was on fire. I love spicy food but not the mouth burning kind. I thought they just needed to describe them as spicy on the menu so people know what they're getting. I decided to call and give some feedback. The groovy hostess apologized for the salt which she referred to as, "O, too spicy"...I said, "no, too SALTY, I love spice!" Then I mentioned the home made pickles and she cut me off saying I was basically the only person in the history of BeeryLand to complain about the pickles being too hot, that she doesn't like spicy food and loves them. hmmm...find that all hard to believe as I really love spicy food and had to spit it out, it was so hot. They were covered in red chili peppers. I never got to say, "how about just putting on the menu that they are spicy." Never got to mention the mac & cheese, cuz then she was too busy to talk to me...pretty uncool, and all that groovy vibe felt pretty fake. I would go back for the great black bean burgers and say NO SALT just in case, and would meet friends and dogs there...but today was a total drag, with about $30 down the drain on food I couldn't eat...and no offer of, "hey come on back and have a bean burger on us!" I got the Telegraph burger, their basic burger, and added cheese. My first bite was such a surprising shock. It was really good. Like, really good. Not that I was expecting it to be bad, I just wasn't expecting such an awesome tasting thing! I thought about getting a second burger after but restrained myself. So yeah, that was super enjoyable. Helps that it comes with a side of chips too! I also got a cider and a stout and both were enjoyable. Prices are not cheap, but not ridiculous either. I think the burger was $11, and it's sizeable. What I liked most about our visit to Telegraph - besides the hunky gourmet dogs, pleasantly overwhelming beer selection, and graffiti'd picnic patio - was, after our meal, when my beer-buzzed pal said in her chipper girly voice "I really enjoyed eating your sausages, John!" Think about it. It's kind of amazing. I encourage you to say the same thing after you eat John's sausages, and keep the mantra alive. Because, as long as you're not a PETA supporter, you will undoubtedly enjoy them. They are made in house, by experienced hands (these guys have worked at top restos all over the Bay), cooked to order, and come in all the best varieties: bahn mi, merguez, spicy italian, etc. Sausages and beer - simple as that. I would like to think I was the first person to compare their spacious patio to Zeitgeist in SF, but I'll add to it and say Telegraph's outdoor digs are far superior to the 'geist, mainly because we have better patio weather here in the East Bay and less douchey folk. And the graffiti art is beyond amazing (I actually witnessed some of it being "installed" by some local artists, and wanted to drop to my knees and do the 'I'm not worthy' schpeel'). And it's dog-friendly...perhaps unofficially? There's way more space outside than in, with tons of wooden picnic tables to make you feel like a proper meat-eating hillbilly, but on a slow night it's fun to sit at the bar and chat with the sausage gods, grabbing drinks from their optimally-stocked beer fridge. And these guys make a mean brownie, all crispy on the outside and fudge-o-matic within. A dude who can grill AND bake gets 5 stars in my book, for sure.
