I wanted to try Behind The Pines for a family breakfast First off the atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming. The chalkboard and mini pool table were big hit with the little ones.The menu had a nice selection. I chose chicken fried steak with gravy, hashbrowns, and eggs. The breading on the chicken fried steak was delicious. It was tender flavorful. The gravy was clearly homemade and awesome. I didn't have high hopes because sometimes gravy hit or miss but these guys knocked it out of the park. This restaurant used to have really good food but was pretty much a dump and didn't appear to be all that clean. But a little while back the relatives of the owner took over and they have done a fantastic job of cleaning the place up and making sure that the food remained really good. In fact, they honestly have made the food even better. There's been a major overhaul of the restaurant in terms of its interior. They're not yet done but it is looking, smelling, and feeling pretty darn good. Seriously, it looks really good even if you didn't compare it to how it used to be. But having that comparison, it is now over the top remarkable. The person who served me over a lunch period was knowledgeable and super friendly. And I often order take out for my staff. They love the food. Most Chinese restaurants that I have ever eated at use so many ingredients that are really bad for you like corn starch, soy sauce, sugar, and a whole host of tasty but nasty things. Stuff that is not good but is just so natural to how they cook in the restaurants. And they do knock it out the park with flavorful cuisines. Since dropping the carbs a few months back, I figured take out Chinese food would be off the table. But Golden Mum has nailed it...They have Keto-friendly dishes! And the Keto food they serve up is tasty! Low carb, gluten free, dairy free, no cornstarch, no soy, no root veggies... ...Just leafy and cruciferous vegetables, meats of your choice or none if you prefer and seasoned so deliciously you can actually taste food not additives and such. Last night my son went there and picked up dinner. It cost 45 dollars and was terrible! They shorted use one crab Rangoon, the fried rice was dry and almost tasteless but the worse part was my 5 year old granddaughter got food poisoning and threw up in the the night because the sauce the used for the honey walnut shrimp and chicken tasted like it was made from rancid mayonnaise. So, a disclaimer, just to get this out of the way: I've never actually eaten at Golden Mum. I have, however, gotten takeaway from them many times, and while it can be hit and miss and times, they get it mostly right, and there's a few things here that you shouldn't miss. The place itself doesn't stand out, and sort of plunked in the middle of East Bremerton in the middle of a small shopping center, would be easy to miss. But it also happens to be close to my house, and right next door to my favorite pizza place in town, so we gave it a shot when our old favorite Chinese restaurant converted to a Pho place. Inside, Golden Mum is as nondescript as on the outside - clean and nice, but nothing that stands out. So, the food - we've had to experiment a little to find the things we like here, but it's been worth the effort. First, the definite hits. The best thing on the menu is easily the spicy garlic prawns, lightly breaded and incredibly flavorful, with just the right zing. Though these are the most expensive appetizer on the menu, they're not to be missed, and there's enough there that they could be an entree in themselves. The broccoli beef, green beans in black bean sauce, cashew chicken, and honey walnut chicken are all worth trying, and coming back for. It's not been perfect, though - for several months the moo shu pork could not even be ordered, and when we finally did get it they only had tortillas, not the usual thin Chinese pancakes. The orange chicken was too sweet and too gelatinous; the BBQ pork was dry. Pot stickers are good, but the egg rolls are hit and miss - at their best they're big and crunchy and almost a meal in themselves, at their worst they're kind of greasy and full of some strange goo. And if you're ordering spicy, expect inconsistencies in the star rating for spiciness - a one star might have you need a break between bites, while a three-star will have you shrugging and wondering where the zing is. So, Golden Mum isn't perfect, but if you know what to order it's tasty, the service is friendly, the prices reasonable. And, to be honest, experimenting to find the hits on a hit-and-miss menu has been kind of fun, and led to some truly excellent discoveries - the kind of food that keeps us coming back for more. read more

I can't believe this is my first review of this place! This has been my go-to spot for Chinese for 6 years, ever since I moved around the corner. I was hooked the first time I came in 2010 - their egg rolls were delicious, authentic and weren't laden with oils. Their entrees and rice/noodle dishes were excellent as well. You could taste the different flavors that meld together to create some unique dishes they had to offer. Sadly though, their food has gone downhill every year since. New ownership, new management (changes have occurred at least a couple of times).... Just 2 weeks ago, the previous owner sold the place to his nephew. Much smaller menu than before (which is fine for me, I didn't stray far from the popular dishes anyway). I ordered my typical lunch special today, almond chicken with sauce on the side and pork fried rice. What I got was definitely not what I had expected. Yes, I get the chicken is fried - I KNOW - but just because it's fried it doesn't mean I should be able to feel the oil in my mouth after taking a bite. The chicken pieces are so heavily weighed down with oil, it's all I taste. I took bites from 4 random pieces and they all taste the same - like oil. The rice is mushy and not appetizing in appearance. I'm disappointed with what I got today, but it doesn't mean I've given up all hope. I'll come again, mostly out of convenience, but I'll be wary about anything fried. Hopefully the new owners get their menu and recipes figured out quickly. read more

This review is for take out, we did not eat in the restaurant, so the review is for the food alone. So here's the breakdown on what we ordered: Potstickers - pretty good. We got the steamed and "grilled" which are the steamed ones, pan fried on one side. Everyone liked these, so they were a winner. They are $8 for 8, so a dollar a potsticker, and they are on the small side. A little expensive in our opinion for this type of restaurant. Wonton Soup - very very very greasy. It didn't taste bad, but we literally kept having to clean layers of oil off the top, not good. The actual wontons were okay, but not stellar. Teriyaki chicken - don't come here for this. There are a lot of other good places in the area for teriyaki chicken, this is not one of them, but we didn't order it, someone else in our group did. It wasn't bad, but it didn't taste anything like teriyaki, nor was it very good. Chicken chow mein - This was okay. The sauce was pretty strong on this, our kids wouldn't eat it, but the adults seemed to like it just fine. The noodles were a bit over cooked and gummy, but it was edible. General Tso's Chicken - Very good! Sauce was good, chicken was good, would order it again. Fried rice came with combos, it has BBQ pork (Chinese style) in it, everyone really liked this. The combos also came with egg rolls, and those were very good too. All in all, there aren't any really good Chinese restaurants in Kitsap, but this one is pretty reliable for a few staples when you're craving them. I would consider this a little overpriced, but not too bad. For everything we ordered, it was $60, which isn't terrible, but I would have expected it to be cheaper. Especially the potstickers. We will probably be back for potstickers, egg rolls, and fried rice at some point but I wouldn't say this is joining our regular rotation of fave restaurants in the area. read more

My last review was in 2016 and we had a great meal. Once since then we had a great carry-out meal (during the lock-down). A couple of weeks ago we got another carry-out and it was very disappointing. The sweet and sour chicken was good. The garlic wings were not crispy like usual and seemed like lower quality wings. The big disappointment was the kung pao chicken. The serving was half what is was in the past. The sauce was bitter and chicken not tender. Missed all the nice veggies. We will be back but it will be a long time before we try again. read more

When our waitress arrived at our table, she seemed to be in a poor disposition....this seemed to remain true for the rest of the meal. All had a glisten and shimmer to it and left a weird layer of grease on my lips and on my plate. I'm a clean eater too! My napkin validated the fact that the grease/oil were apparent lol. The fried batter just squished with juicy grease. But I mean, in the Kitsap area there aren't a lot of Chinese food places. I know I said greasy a lot, but there was just too much. Absolutely dreadful experience. I ordered some Orange Chicken and Fried Rice to go. (This was 13$ btw) the hostess explained that if I didn't like it the next meal was on her. Well I guess I'm gonna be waiting for the next meal. I barely got any rice and it wasn't the fried rice (extra 2$) that I ordered, it was plain white rice. As for the chicken, doughy soggy and all of it poured out in a slop of mess. I would love to get a response and I would also recommend Chungs and Teriyaki Delight as you get quality food for a cheaper price. I have such terrible mixed feelings about this place. Ive had a number of items here but not the claim to fame garlic prawns. My favorite is easily the golden mum house fried rice. It's basically all the meats and their fried rice. The place supposedly has great wings too but I havn't tried them so I won't weight them into this review. What I will measure is their word. Pick up delivery times! I made a fantastic fried rice omelette but my fried rice isn't up to par so I use Golden Mums. They always tell me I can pick it up in 20 minutes and every time I'm stuck waiting in the stuffy entryway waiting for an additional 10-15 minutes. Grrrr. So I have never dined in the place either but I've looked around. It seems to have an identity crisis: a night club, a restaurant, and a bar. I just think if you can't do one thing very well, then why do 3? read more

The food at Golden Mum is fantastic! They have changed the menu and since the change the quality of the food has gone up tremendously. I'm not sure if there are new owners, but the inside is in the process of a total remodel, and it looks like it is going to be really nice when completed. I wandered in here on a whim recommendation, the server was terrible, didn't know the menu. The food was good, I enjoyed it, although on a hot plate the pork slices are served cold which I thought was weird. It's close to my home so I have been back about 3 more times. Never anyone else in there but the bar is always busy and loud which filters into the dining room. I have ordered the same thing each time, but the waitress forgot my soup 3 of the 4 times I was there. So we did take out. Normally we just order the spicy garlic wings and my husband stops me at that. We love on a budget and the wings are a treat because they are so good. The wings are GREAT. AND I MEAN GREAT. I have no complaints about the wings. I wanted something else so we ordered pork fried rice... something pretty simple. It was literally white rice, a touch of egg (it couldn't have even been a whole egg) and a scarce amount of meat, no peas, no carrots, NO VEGGIES.
