An eclectic vibe in an up and coming neighborhood of Indy. You have to go out of your way to come here, but the service and food is worth it! The restaurant is on the smaller side. The staff are super friendly and are willing to give their recommendations. The kitchen is open to the dining area so you can see all the food being prepped. We just stopped in for a drink. Once inside, you are greeted by a friendly host, well-placed ambient lighting, avant garde décor, and a progressive dinner-time playlist. Seating options are tailored to the type of experience you prefer: a seat at the chef's table to see Brooks in action, a bar spot to imbibe a Gator Boots (one of Beholder's signature cocktails), the dining room for a more secluded evening (and a glance into the wine cellar), or the private room (IYKYK). No matter what, the food and drink will dazzle. The curation of Beholder's menu rewards exploration, but doesn't overstay its welcome. What a great place for date night. We sat at the chef's counter and was excited to see the action in the kitchen. The pork and rabbit lumpia was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Octopus dish reminded me of Spain and was just perfect. The pasta rags was my favorite entree with fava beans and melting summer squash. The beef was braised wagyu tongue. Pan roasted halibut has delicious potato hash and fresh snap peas. The horseradish shaved on the top was just the right accompaniment. Drove through not so safe looking area of neighborhood and arrived at cool looking building. I was bit surprised to see a fancy restaurant in that neighborhood. Parking was convenient because we parked right front of the restaurant. Definitely not a place to bring kids. I felt uncomfortable bringing a 6 year old because of paintings on their wall. Other than that food was great. Homemade olives were tasty. Wish it had some bread for the table but nothing else came with it. We had few dishes and shared food in family style. Brussel sprouts were crunchy out layer and soft insIde. Pasta dish was ok. Halibut fish and scallop dish was tasty. I wasn't a fan of Japanese curry sauce but it wasn't bad. Scallops were perfectly cooked so I enjoyed it very much. Cocktails were pretty good too. Overall food is great. I've put off writing this review for a while because I can't find the words to do it justice. Beholder is PERFECT. I would not change a thing. Let's start with atmosphere - the overall atmosphere of a restaurant is really important to me, and I prefer to sit in the bar. Our table at Beholder gave us the best of both worlds. We were seated in the main part of the restaurant, with views of both the kitchen area and bar (they faced each other) so there was plenty to look at. The music was lively and just loud enough. Our servers were so friendly, talking through each course, and made the evening so much more enjoyable. I also liked that Beholder is the experience you make it - if you want to dress up and celebrate with a fancy tasting menu, do it! But it's just as welcoming to dress casually and order a burger and a beer. I loved that. The food - we started with cocktails (amazing) and went with the tasting menu + wine pairings. I love a tasting menu (for special occasions!) because you can try a little bit of everything (especially things you wouldn't normally order), experience each course with thoughtful wine pairings, and get to know the chef preparing the menu. The tasting menu rotates, but this one had oysters, king fish, carrot, steak, and sorbet. We also added the optional cheese course (before dessert), which I would highly recommend! Even though it's just a piece of cheese, it was. Delicious piece of cheese and the perfect bridge between savory dishes and dessert. The dish I was least excited about - the king fish - ended up being my favorite, and our server made sure to bring out spoons so we could scoop up every last bit of the delicious broth. And even though we had cocktails and six courses with wine, I left feeling the perfect amount of full and happy. I truly don't have a negative thing to say about Beholder. I love this place, the overall atmosphere is awesome and the staff is attentive without being overbearing, I decided to visit again during devour Indy which is one of my favorite times of year. I made a reservation on Resy drove over and was seated promptly. They share their normal menu and their devour menu which is a nice touch. I started with six blue alpine oysters with gin and long pepper mignonette; they were fresh a delicious; I then got into the devour menu, started with the blue shrimp chowder, which was flavorful and had tasty toppings. Then I had the arctic whale cod in a delicious dressing or sauce (depending on the region you are from), but it was incredibly awesome. As for dessert, I had the perfect spiced orange sorbet, with pine nuts. Also, what's dinner without drinks? I had my new favorite cocktail, the Yuzo 75, which had gin, prosecco, and a hint of lemon. I loved it, and with my main course, I had a sav blanc. All around a great experience! I love this place and the production and can't wait to visit again! This was a unique and fun experience for a birthday dinner! For our first time at Beholder we went on my Birthday, and it was a Tuesday, so there was not much of a crowd. Our server was very attentive but not overbearing. We had an old fashioned to start and it was a great drink! The day we went they were starting their new french menu. It was fun to watch some of the line cooks watch the chef finish off dishes because it was the first day. We began with the bone marrow appetizer, and it was very savory and the bread was delicious. For our entrees, I had the duck (delicious!), and my wife had the french onion soup burger (messy and very tasty). The fries were good, and we finished it off with a unique dessert that was a layered cake of little thin cookies that was then covered in icing and had fresh berries on top. Very good! Their wine selection was great as well! Fun atmosphere and the service was great. The prices were on the higher end, but it was well worth it! Be sure to check their social media to see what specialty dishes they are offering that night. Wednesday/Thursday they usually have a specialty "burger" that comes with a shot and a beer for $20-30. They can get busy (even on a Thursday night) so make reservations if you have a larger party. Absolutely amazing! This is a small space on E 10th st with grey epoxy concrete flooring, drywall and exposed brick walls, and exposed beam ceilings. The main room has a bar on one side and bar seating overlooking an open kitchen area with bar height tables in the center. There is another room with standard height tables. We finally made it to Beholder as part of the Winter 2021 presentation of Devour Indy, and we were impressed. The a la carte menu is typically quite pricey, but the dishes on the Devour menu were strong. I started off with a great cocktail called Gator Boots - a sweet and smokey mezcal drink. I was a big fan and would order it again. For the Devour deal, we could choose an appetizer, an entree, and a choicee of sorbet for dessert. I had a cauliflower Caesar salad, and this was very good. The peppers mixed in gave it good flavor. The main entree I ordered was the beef tri-tip steak, but to be honest this wasn't my favorite. The presentation was interesting as it was paired with a tiny serving kf root vegetables, falafel, and a red wine sauce that lacked flavor in my opinion. That said, we ordered chicken-fried sweet potatoes as an a la carte side to split, and this was a great idea. The best thing I had all night was the buttermilk sorbet, which came with a great burnt peach leaf syrup. The combination of that sweet syrup and the smooth buttermilk flavor was absolutely incredible. We received good service in our dining experience as well. If I could, this would be the epitome of a 4.5 star review - good service and really good food for the most part. The entree that fell short is what is holding it up from a true five stars I have given other restaurants, but I would round up to five rather than down to four because of that sorbet. Four of us went for a late dinner on Saturday night for a birthday celebration. Loved the eclectic use of old and new decor in this Woodruff Place area neighborhood. Props for putting a great restaurant in a not so great neighborhood. The four of us opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings because why wouldn't you?! Each of us received three Big Rock oysters on the half shell in a slightly vinegary ginger lime minonette. Some of the best oysters I've ever had. The wine pairing was perfect . The seasonal salad with the with super thin sliced turnips radish sweet onion, ricotta Salata with super fine bread crumbs and pecan sprinkled over the top was a fabulous combination with the gruner veltliner wine. The beef carpaccio was very generous and thicker than typical. Ancovy sauce was a bit much for me, but other diners thought was the right amount. The anchovy was very pronounced but with the cheese and the crostini crisps made a not too fishy bite. Three of us had the bison. Three perfectly prepared medium rare bison loin slices with a Diane sauce, but the sauce seemed to be more of a little rich orange-tinted spicy sauce. A chunk of charred cabbage accompanied and was still pretty close to almost Raw and was a little tough to cut. No complaints just didn't add anything to the dish. One Diner chose the twice-cooked octopus leg with potato puree and warmed marinated manzanella olives. She loved it and she hates olives, but an olive, octopus and potato all in one bite was a delicious combination that took away the olive flavor. Both red wine pairings really enhanced both dishes. The Indiana banana cream pie ice cream was a perfect ending with the sautern being sweeter than the ice cream. Just the right amount of food nobody was stuffed and no one felt wanting. Wine pours were the perfect portion that we didn't need a DD. Our server was efficient and polite. The rooms are very live and makes it very difficult to hear the servers and conversation was challenging off and on which is the only reason not 5 stars. This is based off drinks and the bar only! We stopped in for a drink and was pleasantly greeted by the bar tender. We were under dressed for the place but that didn't matter and we got excellent service while we visited. We had a round of wine then cocktails and beer. The wine was very good (Pinot and Riesling), had the Clover Club (delicious!) and the Rothaus Pil (good). We had zero food, just drinks but they had a tasting menu that looked good along with their regular menu. The bartender was very friendly and made out visit worthwhile! Rude manager/host, never got to try the food. We arrived for an early dinner reservation for a birthday, a reservation I made a week in advance. I looked at the entire website and Yelp to see if it was a 21 and over restaurant and it wasn't. When we got there, on a day when more than half of their dining room was empty, they turned on the light in the side room which had no one and no ambiance and basically told us it was either that room for our special night or we could choose not to eat there. I was so excited this past weekend to FINALLY get an opportunity to dust off my mom-yoga pants and get to Beholder for a much needed date night. I've been wanting to go here since it opened, and this was finally my chance. Devour Indy is currently going on, and that was an option, but I couldn't trap myself I into the limited offerings that (all) devour menus tend to do. So, I let my heart (and stomach) guide the way and I wasn't disappointed. I started with the Beholder French 75 which was light, refreshing and an absolutely prefect way to get things rolling. Next we had a half dozen of their oysters which were crazy fresh, and crazy delicious. That was followed by the hamachi crudo that had a perfect balance of citrus to fish. Now for my favorite. The brussels sprouts were out of this world. Easily the best I've ever had. They had this perfect crisp and flavor that left me literally fighting my husband over the last few. I had the (vegetarian) version of the carbonara and just like everything before this, was not disappointed. Flavors were right on point. We ended the meal with the chocolate panna cotta. No doubt I was going to love this, as panda cotta in general is one of my favs...but this definitely was a good one. The vibe here is great. WHY can we not have more restaurants like this on the north side. Small, intimate, simple. Well done all around. The only thing I found slightly odd was finishing my dessert and seriously considering ordering more brussels sprouts. But, that probably should be considered a serious compliment to the chef. read more

I'm super torn between 3 or 4 stars. The food was well prepared, and the service was good but ultimately I just wasn't a huge fan of a lot of the flavor combinations (more details below) and I think what ultimately pushed me to 3 instead of 4 was that one of the major draws for me was what was supposed to be a top wine restaurant underwhelmed on that note. If there was an option for 3.5 star then it probably would be that. Food alone is maybe a 4 star. The white wines were served a little bit warmer than they should have been and the Sauvignon Blanc was kind of just....tasteless, while the vinho verde just lacked the fruity punch compared to everything I've tried in Portugal. The burgundy and Sangiovese were better but still nothing that I found super impressive. Maybe my expectations were a bit too high but hey, these guys did win top wine restaurant awards..... The bruschetta, carbonara, and mutton chop were excellent. Swordfish really added a nice touch of umami to the tomatoes. Carbonara was rich and pasta perfectly cooked al dente - although I would recommend skipping the truffles as they didn't add too much and were overpowered by the pancetta. Found it by accident and couldn't have been happier. What a hidden gem in this beautiful local neighborhood. The food is as good as any major restaurant in the world. It is extraordinarily well prepared with equal service quality. The drinks and wine pairings are incredible. The selections are beyond reproach. The menu is small but the tasting menu really reflects the quality of the food. I hate Back of House add-ons for required tipping and Beholder requires a 5% gratuity. I would prefer just an increase in the menu prices to cover a fair wage for the employees and staff. That being said, don't miss it! read more

When I saw that Jonathan Brooks was a co-owner of Beholder, my expectations for our experience there immediately skyrocketed. And, we weren't disappointed! I would say that this is a dining experience, but not a place I was frequent every week. I like that the menu changes and that all of the ingredients are fresh. We opted for the tasting menu and ordered oysters (my first time trying them!), sashimi, and grilled flat iron steak, finished with a scoop of blood orange sherbet. Absolutely delicious. As an added bonus, Jonathan himself delivered our steak, which was neat to see him so involved as you don't typically see owners working in the back and/or running meals. When I talked to Jonathan Brooks about the menu on the night that I went to Beholder, he said that he loves to take food that people think they don't like, and to turn it into something delicious, something that they didn't even know that particular food was capable of tasting like; he hit the ball out of the park if that's the benchmark for Beholder. Very similar to its breakfast buddy, Milktooth, Beholder has a small menu with no room for requests or substitutions, but why would you want to change anything? He knows what he's doing. I'm being serious: find an ingredient that you don't like in something on the menu and I dare you to order it, because I promise you it won't taste like what you think it does and you'll probably love it afterwards. While it's a little on the pricer side, I think of Beholder as a place to savor every bite that I eat and to really explore the flavors, which makes it worth the cost. I must start by saying I have been very reluctant to give beholder a try because of the poor experiences I have had at milktooth. But I decided to put those differences aside and head out on one of the rainiest nights Indy has seen in years for a double date night. I have to say, I was immediately impressed with the cutest of the exterior of the building and the set up of the inside. It's spacious but still Intimate, quirky yet still refined. The open bar and kitchen are great concepts to allow for a fully immersed dining experience. The menu, i believe, changes frequently but there was a ton of great options and we splurged and got many of them. To start (round one): cocktails (all delicious) and sugar wasabi snap peas, crispy okra & cabbage salad and tots with smoked roe. Each of the items was delicious. The peas were served cold which was a surprise but made the flavors burst and the textures of the salad were amazing. The smoke roe was flavorful and had a fun experience of eating it with the other accompaniments on the tater tots. Round two: seared tuna, mussels and spicy soba noodles. The tuna had a brown butter that gave it a very interesting taste. To be honest it may have been my least favorite of the night but I still enjoyed it. The mussels have a kick! This was not noted on the menu. The pork belly (they said) has a spice to it which for sure lends itself to the broth in the mussels. Now I love spice, but if I didn't i wouldn't have been too happy. Lastly, the soba noodles were delicious and light and very flavorful. We then ordered two of the chicken mole tacos. These were amazing! They were lightly fried and came with great toppings. We were about to ordered some ice cream for desert but also decided to order the meat & cheese platter. And my oh my am I glad we did! The desserts we got were the strawberry marscapone ice cream with balsamico on top. This was heavenly. I would have probably enjoyed even a little more of the balsamic. And the birthday cake ice cream which again - flavorful and tasty. But the meat and cheese platter was amazing. Spicy sausage, Spanish blue cheese, capicola, pickles and a honeycomb with delicious grilled bread. All in all the food was outstanding. For sure a night to splurge as many plates were quite pricey for what your received but delicious nonetheless. Service was good - not exceptional - but I don't have any noticeable complaints there. Gratuitously Quirky Menu Disappoints Ate here with 2 friends on a recent weekday. I was extremely underwhelmed. And oddly, surprised because I had been excited at the possibility of a tasty new spot on the East side. The small menu looked promising, chalk full of some quirky (and not subtle) combos like pepperoni and carrots. We ordered a beet and squash salad and a toasted bread and gouda to start. The salad was mostly romaine with cubed squash and some red onions and a light vinaigrette. The toast and cheese was good, but the portions for both items were very small. Bring some Triskets in your purse, folks. Because small plates turned out to be a theme. There were no vegetarian options for my friend who doesn't eat meat. The server suggested the fish dish to her when asked. I ordered the giant octopus and my friends ordered the sole. The octopus was tasty, served with some aioli and a single piece of cauliflower. The cauliflower prices must be through the roof, these days! Again the portion size was itty bitty: one octopus tentacle, unceremoniously slung across the plate. I have attached a photo. See green olives for scale. Bonus if you can "Where's Waldo" the actual octopus amidst the garnish. I think my friends fared a bit better with the sole, their dinner looked more substantial. We finished our meal with a couple scoops of icecream, because the rest of the desserts were needlessly offbeat like...parsnips... for dessert, salted blood orange, huckleberry semifreddo. The burnt coconut-sesame icecream was the worst dessert I've ever had. I know it's creator must be delighted reading that, because there is no way this reaction was unintentional. It tasted like volcanic ash or maybe the black crust that forms on an old baking pan. I told the server it was awful, and she retorted that it has charcoal in it. Even if you leave hungry (we did) you'll have fun. You cant eat this stuff with a straight face. The cost for 3 ladies (4 cocktails, two appetizers, 3 entrees, and two scoops) was $185. I deemed the place pricey, but then again, I wouldn't be saying that if I had enjoyed the food. Don't worry this story has a happy ending. My husband and I dined at beholder for the first time yesterday evening to celebrate my birthday. We had the 3-course prize fix in honor of Greg Hardesty. Everything was delicious but especially the sauces and broths.....amazing flavors. Every little tasty bit of green slivered herb, halved green olive, perfectly prepared mushroom. We sat at the chef counter and enjoyed the adventurous menu and wine pairings. A bit pricey, so go for a special occasion.

This place is new and a hidden gem! Random location but the art and decor inside is so cool. The kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant which I really liked and thought it was interesting to see the cooks at work. We got cocktails and the waitress recommended ones based on our taste and we loved them. I also got the walleye and it was cooked and crispy to perfection. The dessert was sooooo good and was a fancy twist on root beer float. The presentation was also well done. read more
