My bf and I went last night for their late night happy hour. We got a few rolls and sashimi. I wasn't a huge fan on the Hawaiian roll, but the spicy salmon roll and Las Vegas roll were good. This place is hit or miss. There are some really good things and things that were disappointing. If you go, the salmon was delicious. Rich, creamy, and buttery texture. The other things... not so much. We tried the chef's special roll where they choose the topping of fish, and I wasn't terribly impressed. The sashimi was good, according to my friend, but she did prefer the salmon as well. Price was not too bad. We got edamame, two rolls, nigiri and sashimi. The vibe was really weird though. I was very impressed with Bei. The restaurant was clean and had comfy booths. They also have sushi bar but we were there to get other Japanese food. Spicy pork bowl from their combo lunch option was good size and had perfect portions of meat and vegetables. The chasu ramen had deep bone flavor and plenty of pork. However it was missing the traditional Japanese toppings such as the pickled vegetables. Other than that, it was really tasty and satisfying. Their combo meals really is enough for 2 people. Their traditional bento boxes were also very satisfying. The chicken katsu was fresh and hot and not greasy at all. Their hamachi Kama here was very affordable here at $8.95. It was moist and large enough to be eaten as a meal. Their calamari appetizer which was prepared more like cutlets were also tasty. No tentacles here. Service was excellent and fast. I was on the fence between 2-3 stars after my first visit, but the second definitely confirmed the 2star. Service was good, ambiance is casual, but food is very mediocre. There is plenty of parking in the lot outside, and there is happy hour daily. Nigiri and sashimi: Uni nigiri was good, amaebi disappointing, sake nigiri mediocre, and sake sashimi good. Rice on the nigiris were a bit too densely packed, and the fish on top was sliced thinly and then pressed too forcefully into the rice. Happy hour rolls: Very, very mediocre. I guess the happy hour price might seem like it's worth it, but I probably wouldn't order from the happy hour menu again. I had a Baked Alaska roll, which was room temperature and comprised of some tasteless fish with tempura powder sprinkled on top. The Golden Alaska was similar except the entire roll was fried on the outside.. and I could taste the staleness of the oil. The batter was deathly thick, and when I bit into a piece, I could feel my mouth coated with oil. My friends also ordered some rolls from the happy hour menu, which were equally unimpressive. Teriyaki chicken: There was a lot of food in this entree, but it came out on a hot plate looking like a soppy mess. There were a ton of sliced vegetables, some sliced meat, and a pool of (questionable teriyaki) sauce. It also came with tempura, which was good. Non-happy hour rolls: The first time I was here, I tried the Dragon and Caterpillar Rolls. Dragon was unmemorable with sparse unagi on top, and the Caterpillar was decently good but with mushy avocado on top. I liked the Scottsdale Roll, which had fresh fish and a good kick on the inside. As a random tidbit, the miso soup here is surprisingly good. Unfortunately it's not good enough to redeem the other disappointing dishes. read more

Got food poisoning . Could have been from the delivery service that let it sit out for too long.

We've previously been here a few times before and the issues are usually the same. The customer service isn't great, the food is usually pretty good but we only come here if our usual place down the street is to busy. We came here with a larger party a few weeks ago and we were told the wait would be 10 minutes yet we sat for 35+. It felt like the AC was out inside as well, it was so uncomfortable and sticky inside. There were two house fans going but that doesn't really help. The host never checked on us while we waited, our waitress was nice enough but kept forgetting things we had asked for. read more

No no no.....I know this is top on the list for best sushi spot in south Scottsdale but I did NOT love it and am actually surprised at its high rating. The rolls and sashimi I got did not taste fresh at all. The rolls lacked flavor and I only ate them because I paid for them. My friend got the Albacore Tataki and she did actually enjoy it. I tried it and it didn't taste spectacular, which I what I expect for $14. I got the salmon Carpacio and it was salmon sashimi with a lemon slice right on top with cucumber sticks scattered around the bowl. Salmon didn't seem fresh and all I could taste was lemon. Presentation was lacking. I gave 2 stars because the servers were great while placing our to go order and were patient with all the questions. It wasn't the worst sushi I've ever had but I unfortunately won't be back. Esp for the price point (higher) there's better places in Scottsdale to go. read more

This is my new favorite sushi place in town. The location is in a kind of sketchy area, but their happy hour is everyday between 4:30pm-7:00pm and 8:00pm-11:00pm and their sushi is seriously the best! We had the Las Vegas roll, the Volcano roll, and the Baked Salmon roll. I like my sushi cooked, so I was really happy to have a nice selection of sushi to choose from. The Las Vegas roll and Baked Salmon roll were expectantly good, but the Volcano roll was really something special. They also offered $7 sake bombs during happy hour. I had to asked one of them "how long is the wait?" then we're seated right away. The guy that wait our table was friendly. The restaurant is clearly understaffed and they should not be operating at full capacity if they can't handle it. Everything took way too long. Our server forgot multiple things including chopsticks, sharing plates, half of our drinks, etc. it was a terrible experience service wise. As for the food, I didn't even eat my sashimi because it was slimy and clearly poor quality or not properly stored. The rolls were sloppy and the gyoza was cold. We were seated at the sushi bar quickly, and they told me when I'd called prior that would likely be the case since happy hour ended at 6 and they didn't take reservation for parties smaller than 6. Our server was friendly, attentive and funny. We ordered 2 appetizers, 8 different rolls, some sashimi, nigiri, and mochi. Sushi was fresh and delicious. I first visited this restaurant with my family last week and it was so good we had to come back this week again for a dinner night out! This spot is quaint and you can easily overlook it in the parking lot it's at. It fills up quickly too so you know it's good. I loved the atmosphere, even though it is a bit of a tight squeeze, it is homey feeling and has a pleasant vibe overall. The staff are friendly but not over the top, they give you space to eat and enjoy your time. I got the avocado rolls and they are so good! I don't eat fish so I was blown away by how good these rolls were and didn't taste even remotely fishy at all. The prices are affordable (about what you expect for this type of cuisine) and they even have Happy Hour Deals too if you're trying to save a bit. My family had a great time and we would be happy to return! I recommend Bei for a date night or a family night- it's a great lil spot for any occasion. read more

This is a review solely based on VEGAN / VEGETARIAN comments & concerns There is a big sticker on their window which reads "vegetarian friendly" and I'd like to touch on that. 1. Many of their vegetarian options contains tempura used in a shared fryer with shrimp / possible other cross contaminants 2. Their happy hour doesn't contain A SINGLE vegetarian roll (not very vegetarian friendly?) 3. When I asked to make a substitution to lower the cost of a roll (in lieu of having no vegetarian roll on happy hour) our waiter said no because the owner wouldn't allow it Not very accommodating, seems disingenuous to have something that reads "vegetarian friendly" on the front window Our waiter, I believe his name was Christian, said he was working on creating a vegan / vegetarian menu & this would be a nice addition to this Resturant. Real Japanese sushi at reasonable prices. Here, the fresh fish is the star of the show followed by the perfectly seasoned sushi rice in the proper proportions and temperature. Came on a Friday right when they opened at 4:30pm. Not to fanciest of places but the fish is solid and I am a purest when it comes to sushi so I stick with nigiri mostly. Although I did not see Toro fatty tuna belly on the menu, I overheard someone at the sushi bar ordering it. I got a couple of happy hour specials: salmon and a spicy yellowtail hand roll. For my nigiri selections: amaebi fresh shrimp (came with the deep fried heads, legit), uni sea urchin, ikura salmon roe, mackerel, and spicy scallops. After my first bite I decided it was worth splurging on the fresh wasabi which is an extra charge but worth it. My companion enjoyed her Chirashi and I gave her my complimentary miso soup for the Yelp check on. She also ordered the monster Rolls Royce roll which was deep fried and delicious.
