I have ordered from BEI many times. All of the previous orders were fantastic. Unfortunately, tonight it was a 2 out of 10. The house salad dressing was the consistency of water. It literally wouldn't even coat the lettuce. The salad was ok but it would have been nice to have had dressing that I could taste on the salad. The yellowtail sashimi was good. No wasabi. The eel was good and size was as usual. The roll was horrible! The rice was a big mushy mess and old. The avocado tasted old. The nori was like trying to chew a rubber band. The chicken teriyaki was 80% old mushy rice, 18% over cooked vegetables and 2% of bits of chicken. The amount of chicken wouldn't even make up a single chicken finger in size! We are trying sushi places around Phoenix and Scottsdale. Went at the beginning of August. The sushi is of decent quality for the price. The venue is very casual and quite loud. The floors are sticky. Focusing on the food, we got the Bei special roll, a couple rolls on the happy hour menu, and a couple rolls off the menu and were satisfied. I let my date pick all of the rolls, except I picked the Rainbow Roll, so I'm not quite sure what we got. Every roll was good! This isn't the best sushi I've ever had, but it came out quickly and tasted fresh! The yellowtail sashimi had a great fresh and lemony flavor. Freshness is key when it comes to sushi. I think this is my 2nd time at Bei. I was part of a very large group and they were able to accommodate all of us in one super long table. Most of my friends had sushi as it was Happy Hour. I had the vegetable tempura, which I always order when at any Asian Restaurant. I specified no sweet potatoe as it always seems too heavy and I just don't like the taste as tempura. Been to Bei twice this month and digging the low key hip vibe. And the simple and tasteful decor. The bar and seating areas are comfortable and casual, and the service is friendly. The food is great! Each time Iv'e had the Ahi Poke bowl with side salad and a beer. The side salad is greens with slivered carrots and daikon radish chopped tomatoes and a tangy sweet dressing, very good. The Poke bowl has a generous amount of tasty cubed Ahi on sticky rice with thinly sliced avacados and a creamy dressing "like crab salad" with slivered carrots and diakon. As you dig down in the bowl you can taste a hint of sesame. This with a dash of soy sauce, wasabe and ginger is tasty and satisfying. I need to try some other stuff on the menu, but hooked on this Ahi Poke bowl. read more

Pro-tip: Really nice happy hour hours including early dinner and late night happy hours with a pretty wide variety of options on the happy hour menu. Highlights: It's been years since I came and I remember not being very impressed, but we were in the area and wanted to give the late night happy hour a try. I was actually really surprised by the quality of fish and the size of the nigiris and the salmon sashimi (the first time). I'd definitely return at least one more time to get another data point. I like how they have a pretty big variety of appetizers, nigiris and rolls as part of their happy hour menu. Lowlights: When we ordered the salmon sashimi, we were so impressed with the large cuts of fish and how nice and fatty they were, but upon closer inspection, there was this weird grey spot on the top one. I asked the server if we could have a different one because of the spot, and the replacement that they brought out was sooo meager in size and a much leaner cut as well. We were so disappointed. We honestly would have gotten more fish if we just kept the first order and tossed the first piece and ate the other four slices than getting a whole new plate of five slices. 90% of their rolls are just crab mix or spicy tuna mix inside as opposed to real fish. Three stars because we could tell they were understaffed, but there was a lot left to be desired. :/ Got seated right away, but then everything was really slow from there. Staff forgot almost everything we asked for and when the food came it wasn't it. The sushi itself was super meh and the udon was really salty. The best thing we all ordered was the tempura. I called ahead to see how busy they were and had a delightful conversation with the person who answered the phone. Very courteous and welcoming so we decided to try it. We went in and sat at the counter. Service was speedy. They have a LOT of options on the menu. I'm a pretty basic sushi person so we ordered a salmon roll, a tuna roll and a spider roll. It was delivered fairly quick. Presentation was not great but it was okay. We started with a miso soup but didn't order any drinks. I think the total bill was about $50 with tip. We've gone here 3 times and it's been very consistent. The plaza has awful parking but manageable if you go during off-hours. The food has been quite good. The salad and dressing that came with the beef teriyaki plate, from what my bf said had no taste whatsoever. We decided to stop in for dinner on a Tuesday night. Pros: We were sat instantly, no wait. The servers and staff were friendly. They have a robot to bring the food out. Cons: Incorrect items and missing items were brought out. The quality of food is poor: crab mix (imitation crab) in majority of the rolls, canned tuna in rolls, edamame was soggy indicating it was likely frozen and microwaved, overall, easily determined that food items weren't of standard quality. Had to request new dishes as the ones presented had visible stains. House Hot sake was room temp and had a strange taste. Extended wait time for server to check on us and to cash out. To go in and spend almost $100 on 6 rolls is disappointing considering the issues presented. Definitely will be the first and last time we go to this establishment. read more

From first appearances, it didn't seem like much, and honestly it wasn't. It felt a little old and rundown on the inside, and the experience was just average. One concern is that they are not particularly clear on what is in the sushi, which could be an issue for dietary preferences or allergies. If you have any concerns, ASK about it! For example, despite letters on the window of "Vegetarian Friendly," it was very unclear what was legitimately vegetarian. There are NO soups - even miso - that are vegetarian. The miso soup is actually made with PORK broth, which is a very unexpected surprise. There are no lunch specials or rice or noodle bowls that appeared vegetarian either. And while there is a vegetarian sushi section, multiple dishes come with eel sauce. When did eels become vegetables? Then, to make it even more complicated, one person in my party ordered a sweet potato roll and asked for no eel sauce, but when the server listed a few things that come in or on it, some things (like cream cheese) that were not listed on the menu. I actually felt a little weird a few hours after eating and wonder if there was something non-veg in my roll (the Green Bei, which on the menu appears veg). All in all, it was ok, adequate for a lunch, but far from a fancy sushi restaurant and contrary to the signage, it is not nearly as vegetarian friendly as a lot of places! read more

Felt the need to update my review after coming back, this is still one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Scottsdale. It's locally owned and they only source the freshest fish. I've been to Japan several times, and I can confidently say that this matches the quality and service I've seen across Japan. The staff is super friendly too. They recently opened Bei express, which maintains the quality of this location but it's more convenient. I'd be happy to eat at either since their sushi is always so good! read more

The place smells great the nigiri is fresh and clean, Tuna, yellow tail, salmon sashimi were all excellent, the rolls were portioned well and full of flavor solid variety as well. This reminds me of home in the Bay Area a great weekly sushi joint you don't mind spending a little more for better quality but not so expensive you're worried about paying bills the next day.
