To celebrate our wedding anniversary my wife and I enjoyed lunch @ Sushi Sen in Scottsdale. The atmosphere inside/out had a relaxed and welcoming feeling. Not a huge space but it felt larger because of the high expansive ceilings. When we entered we were warmly greeted and seated. The menu was expansive so we were happy we previewed the menu at home. We both settled on the Bento Combination. You get to pick one item from each of the three categories (Sashimi, Sushi, and A la Carte). I selected the Sashimi - Maguro, Sushi - Spicy Hamachi, and À la carte - Chicken Katsu. My wife selected the Sashimi - Hamachi, Sushi - California Roll, and À la carte - Chicken Teriyaki. A delicious Miso soup accompanied the Bento Box, not too salty or heavy feeling. Our Bento Boxes came out relatively quick, the presentation was excellent, every item was fresh (sashimi melted in our mouths), and perfectly prepared. The portions were perfect (no leftovers and we didn't walk away hungry). The service was exactly as I had imagined it should be, welcoming, attentive, and courteous. Overall, I highly recommend Sushi Sen for the quality, service, and ambiance. Notes/Tips: you could easily miss this location as the only indication of its location is a sign posted high above on an archway (see one of my photos). Another well known dining venue is right next door, the "Alma" to help you with location. Parking is free and plentiful. The walk from the parking lot to the entrance is not too far. read more

Sushi Sen is our go-to restaurant when we're craving Japanese food. We come here a lot because the food is great, the prices are reasonable, and it never disappoints. This time, we ordered the sushi boat, chirashi bowl, uni nigiri, and o-toro nigiri. Everything was fresh and tasted amazing. The uni and o-toro were definitely our favorites. The chirashi bowl was also a favorite, yes, we have a lot of favorites here! The staff here are always nice and friendly, which is another reason we keep coming back. read more

Salmon nigiri was tender as well. Highly recommend the agedashi tofu which is really nicely fried and in a sauce with lots of umami. Food came pretty quick as well even though it was happy hour! I ordered the chicken Katsu curry, it was delicious. Came to me hot and fresh. The chicken was perfectly cooked, crispy, seasoned very lightly. The curry was sweet, perfect accent to the savory chicken. The rice was soft and perfectly cooked. My friends ordered ramen and sushi rolls. We thought the sushi rolls would be $5 but they were $20 each. That was unexpected! Huge rolls, meant to be shared! The serving sizes were perfect for dinner. The food quality is so good here! We've ordered different items in different time we visited, the price was very reasonable. I loved their unagi donburi and chirashi don, you can taste the freshness of sashimi. The beef and tofu sukiyaki is a warm appetizer to start a meal, and the amount of meat was quite generous. The dynamite was on the heavier side, it tasted good but better to share with others. The ramen in noodle combination was a small portion, and I really liked this combination because you can choose two smaller dishes. The quality of food in this combination was still there. This spot is such a gem tucked away in Scottsdale. The home of the $5 sushi rolls and the chunky rolls are incredible -- fresh, thick cuts of fish piled generously on top make them taste far beyond their price tag. Quality and presentation are on par with much pricier places. The full menu covers all the classics, from customizable bentos to mix and match entree combos. Everything feels thoughtfully made, and the kind, authentic service from the Japanese staff adds a genuine warmth and authenticity to the experience. Happy hour menu had decent deals but was a limited selection. We had the spicy tuna roll, crunchy roll, chicken katsu curry, and the happy hour gyoza. Bill came out to 80ish (including tip) for two people. The sushi was decent, curry just alright, and gyoza tasty but needed a thicker sauce to pair with the crispy fried shell. We went on a Thursday for happy hour . The food was good. Nothing Wowed me. The happy hour sushi roll menu was pretty limited from other places I've been. I didn't have a favorite unfortunately. There was a roll that had eel and octopus that I tired for the first time. It wasn't bad. It was fresh and was not chewy how I imagined it would taste, nor was it fishy. The waitress was great. I've ordered both take-out and delivery from Sushi Sen and it has always been top notch albeit a bit pricey. So when my friend suggested we meet here for a girls dinner earlier this week, I was all in! Upon being seated, I was pleased to see a more extensive dine-in menu (including a great bento box deal where you choose one item from three different categories), and a nice cocktail / wine / saki list to... Service was on the slow side to start but it was fine after we ordered. The sushi was all very good but some of the cooked food was blah ie: hamachi kama and chicken teriyaki that were served with our bento boxes. One friend had a noodle dish and enjoyed that. The oshinko roll was not what I'm used to in Hawaii so that was a little bit of a disappointment. The eel cucumber roll was good! I also got the chicken katsu don as this is one of the dishes I get to test an establishment. It was really good. I loved the flavor and was able to take some home for lunch the next day! I can tell they get busy during prime meal times. I sat up at the bar and food came out fairly quickly. Everyone was hustling to get food out especially from the sushi bar. The location is not directly visible from the parking lot. There is a sign and you have to walk through the entry way a little bit to get to the restaurant. They offer a variety of sushi as well as traditional Japanese dishes. They are consistently good too! The place is always full but it is also on the smaller side. There's a sushi bar and also a small outdoor patio to enjoy nice weather. Space heaters are available. My go to most of the time are: agedashi sushi and edamame beans to start off. Then nigiri or sashimi (salmon, toro, yellowtail). These are always fresh. Cooked rolls: dragon or caterpillar roll. Then for dinner entree, I love the eel in the box, pork katsu curry (dinner portion), and tonkatsu ramen. The sauces and flavors are so yummy! I love having some of these for leftovers. It's hard to narrow it down to what I want to eat. But those are some good options if you're having a hard time choosing. read more

We got the crunchy tuna roll, crunchy toro roll, dynamite California roll, and the negihama ponzu. Our fave was the negihama ponzu which is a classic yellowtail roll. What I love about this place is how extensive their menu is. They offer many dishes other Japanese places in the area do not. On our most recent visit, we ordered pan fried gyoza, spicy scallop nigiri, sea urchin nigiri, salmon skin roll, spicy scallop roll, and tempura udon. The gyoza, always a classic standard, that one can't go wrong with. The nigiri and rolls were of good quality. Not the best I've had in the state, but also not the worst. Props to the scallops, they were plentiful, plump and tasted fresh. The only dish we were disappointed with was the tempura udon. The broth was overly salty. Generally, service here has been a hit or a miss. Sometimes we've felt rushed to order, other times we've felt ignored. If you're looking for decent Japanese food in the area for a reasonable price, I would still recommend this place regardless of the service. We used to dine here regularly before moving out of state for three years, and now that we're back in Arizona, we wanted to place our weekly sushi order with them. When I called in, I was very clear that we do not eat crab and that all sauces and mayo should be on the side. We spent $129 for two rolls, one order of sashimi, and two orders of jalapeño poppers (with crab substituted for spicy tuna). When I got home and unpacked the food, the jalapeño poppers were filled with crab and covered in sauce and mayo--exactly what we asked to avoid. We called to let them know and even offered to text a photo. The first lady who answered was apologetic and transferred me to someone else who refused to give her name. When I explained the issue, she laughed loudly over the phone, which I found disrespectful. She then said she would refund the poppers but told us never to return to the restaurant. I waited a day before posting this review to give them a chance to correct the situation, but no effort was made and they did not refund the poppers. Sushi Sen is the closest sushi place to my house, and my girlfriend and I decided to stop in tonight. We were seated upon entry and we felt right at home. The decor in here is minimalist and sleek. They have this weird statue in the corner that made us go "WTF". Our server was sweet and helpful. This place has some very fresh tasting sushi, I ordered the Dynamite California roll and the Soft Shell Crab roll with fried gyoza. My girlfriend ordered the miso soup. The Dynamite California roll was the superior roll, and it was exactly the flavor explosion I was looking for. It was so yummy! My girlfriend's miso was also very tasty and so smooth. So my review is a little biased but I feel rightfully so. Sushi Sen has a really nice vibe and Japanese feel to it. Small but quaint and perfect for a date or if you want to go with family. Their sushi is very good and their menu is diverse for people who are looking for all types of Japanese food. The sushi is slightly on the higher end of the price point for sushi. Traditionally sushi and good quality and service was good as well. My review would be a good 4 stars but what really made me feel weird was that I went to this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon and wasn't at capacity, with my wife and three children ages 5,9 and 1. Our total bill came out to $300 which I expected, we ordered a lot of food. What rubbed me the wrong way is that they added an auto gratuity of 18% to our meal and we didn't even have a large party. We were technically 3 children and two adults and one of those kids being 1. Definitely a bad sour taste we ended our meal on, but none the less the total experience until the end was good. read more

After a session at Perspire Sauna, I was looking for a dinner spot close by. Sushi Sen happens to be in the same charming shopping center, so I walked over on a Tuesday evening. There's plenty of parking. Ambiance (4/5): Pretty much what I expect at a Japanese restaurant. Cool decor, tidy, and intimate. I sat at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. Service (4/5): After greeting us, the waitress was a little slow to come back to take our order, but other than that, she did well. I arrived about an hour before closing, and I'm a slow eater, so I didn't finish eating until half an hour after the restaurant closed. No complaints from the staff until 30 minutes after close as I was finishing my beverage. Understandable, though with a little quicker service, I would have been out earlier, too. Drinks (4.5/5): At Japanese restaurants, my typical go-to is a hot sake and a Japanese beer. Which is exactly what I did on this visit. I went with a Kirin light. They have a nice menu of beer, sake, wine, and liquor (with an emphasis of Japanese liquor and Japanese-focused cocktails (lychee, yuzu, etc.). On Wednesdays, they have a special deal where you can get a bottle of wine and two rolls (from a select list) at a good price. Food (4.5/5): They have a large menu! I'm talking Cheesecake Factory style. So making a decision wasn't easy. Since I'm all about variety, I tried their pick-two combo. On one side, you can select between 10 or so noodle dishes (including ramen). I went with a classic Tonkotsu ramen. On the other side of the menu, you have 10 or so entree options. I went with the tuna poke bowl. Both were delicious. The broth of the ramen was on point. The chasu pork was flavorful. The noodles were tender and cooked just right. Up there with some of the best ramen I've had. And the poke didn't disappoint either. It had a nice sweet sauce and some tempura flakes to give it some crunch. The tuna was fresh. I was expecting smaller portions for this pick two, but they were essentially full portions. So it was quite a feast! You also get a nice side of sliced cucumbers with sesame seeds in a soy sauce-based sauce. When we're talking about quality, Sushi Sen's food was high up there. It's my favorite Japanese spot I've been to since I moved to Phoenix. Since I'm a night owl, I just wish they were open a little later. Next time around, I'll have to try some of their sushi. read more

Authentic Japanese food owned and operated by great folks from Tokyo! And the food was simply the best! Kaori was our server and so nice. Food came out timely despite it being a full house. I think we will come back before we depart on Friday! My wife had beef sukiyaki with tofu. Our guess is the meat was prime rib. My wife is a great cook and she loved it!! I had my favorite, katsudon! Plenty of tender pork katsu with plenty of egg and onions. The sauce was spot on especially the sweetness. I would have to say the best tonkatsu I have ever had! Yes, I am old.....60 plus! The place is medium size and very clean! Nice sushi bar with about a dozen seats. We did not have a reservation on a Monday night so did have to wait about 30 minutes.
