Digital receipt from purchasing a single small cup of hot chocolate at Piron.
    Steve H.

Heard from a friend that the hot chocolate here was great, so went to try it. Best part: it was descent (but extremely rich). Worst part: a small cup or hot chocolate here costs 8.76! Yes, eight dollars and seventy-six cents (not a typo, lol). Service was good, not much of a wait.

Amazing candy on a 3 tier candy dish.

I was looking for a chocolatier and came across this little place. The chocolate was to die for. Patty, one of the owners, was beyond helpful with suggestions of certain pairings of chocolate and how much to order. Every one of her suggestions was heavenly and amazing. I selected 6 different types of chocolate and of course the toffee. From beginning to end, Patty made everything as smooth as the chocolate itself. Thank you again for all of your advice and would highly recomend!

    Passion fruit, marzipan and cognac

Pretty pricy at $2 each; not bad but I'll probably not return. It was just okay. Major fail on the cognac one. I also got a marzipan and a passion fruit. I've been to my share of chocolatiers in US but also abroad in Belgium, Paris and Madrid. I understand the higher price point for quality unique pieces. I didn't get that mouthgasm that's expected with handcrafted Belgium chocolates.

1/2 pound of chocolates, beautiful wrapped!

If you need a last minute gift (or carefully planned in advance... that's just not who I am), this is the place to go! I called ahead (because COVID) and the woman on the phone was very sweet and patient with assisting me. I ended up getting a half pound of different chocolates that they selected, but you can make any number of requests like no nuts, no alcohols, type of chocolate, etc. They wrap it up for you in a beautiful gold box with a ribbon of your choice. Right now there's free 10 minute parking outside on the north side of the street and it's very quick to pick up. You can pay over the phone or pay inside. They also told me that if you're not comfortable going inside they will bring your order out to you. Also what a beautiful store it is! I'll be back!

I had Belgian chocolatier Piron bookmarked for some time now and this past week I had a chance to visit the shop. Belgian is a small high end chocolatier shop that sells a variety of items (mostly chocolate related) like truffles, cordials, caramels, hazelnut filled chocolates, molded chocolate figures, barks, chocolate coated fruits, toffees and the list goes on. Each piece is delicious and truly a work of art. During the winter season, they offer hot chocolate that is rich in cacao. It's like drinking chocolate ganache! It is rather sweet so it's not for everyone but if you suffer from the sweet tooth, then this hot beverage is the perfect drink to have on a winter day. I visited around the week of Valentine's Day and the lines were steadily moving. The one highly coveted "it" item seems to be the chocolate heart shaped box where the box is a 100% edible chocolate mold! That's so cool! Their small size is about 45 dollars. I'll have to say this place is on the high end but for the taste and quality, the chocolates are definitely worth a try.

    so much deliciousness

We know not every place is going to be a home run, but Kilwins in Evanston had one of the worst price-to-quality ratios we've ever experienced. The prices were shocking. We paid $66 for three tiny scoops and three small scoops. Even the cheapest single scoop was over $9, and if you wanted two flavors in one scoop, you had to order the larger $11 option. I've been to plenty of premium ice cream shops that charge more than average, but this felt completely out of proportion to what we received. The selection was also underwhelming. There weren't many flavors, and nothing stood out as particularly creative or memorable. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the ice cream itself. It seemed like it may have been made with quality ingredients, but every flavor we tried was overwhelmingly sweet. Instead of tasting balanced or rich, the sweetness drowned out everything else. We don't mind paying premium prices when the quality justifies it, and we certainly don't expect every ice cream stop to become a favorite. But after visiting so many great ice cream shops over the years, this was easily one of the most disappointing experiences we've had. Between the extremely high prices, limited selection, slow and blah service, and mediocre ice cream, we won't be back. Maybe their other stuff is good. But the ice cream portion of the store is best avoided.

Now they took their tap room and more than doubled its size. So glad to see that they're doing well, especially with the loss of Temperance. I hadn't been here in a while, mostly because parking is more challenging here than it was at Temperance or at Sketchbook's Skokie location, and I don't live anywhere near public transit that would get me to this location. But, the week of Thanksgiving one of my neighbors wanted to come here for Irish music night, so we got a group together and came over. It was super chill (they were playing in the background rather than performing a show), and it was perfect for a Tuesday night on a short work week. I also love that they have other events for the community, as I saw that they were doing a drag show that weekend (sadly I didn't make it out for that. I'm sure it would've been awesome). Obviously, the beer is great, as I've mentioned in my previous reviews of both locations. I also like that they carry some NA options, as well as their own hop water (which I haven't tried because I'm not a huge hops gal, but I'm intrigued). I'll definitely be back, and if I lived within walking distance I would be here all the time. The vibes are immaculate, as the youth would say.

I know from him that Sketchbookhas an excellent reputation as a brewery. My flight selections weren't bad, but didn't wow me. My favorites were the kiwi-strawberry sour and the Mexican Hot CoCo - a barrel aged choice that leans sweet so I can only have a little. The guest cider was also great. The grapefruit raddler wasn't my favorite; it felt a bit weak. Based on vibe and wide selection, I'd definitely return to see what's on tap next time!

My first thought was, "This is like Chipotle, if Chipotle was actually good," and I'm sticking with that. Perhaps that can be the new slogan for Guzman y Gomez. Run with it, put it on your bags and cups, just make sure to pay me back in free burritos. It's not exactly the same model as Chipotle. You don't watch the magic happen, so there's no opportunity to request a little more of this or a bit less of that. But the staff here are so eager to please, I always find I get exactly what I was looking for anyway. If you need a little more of anything, just ask, and they're happy to oblige. Plus, this place has so many more options than Chipotle, it's crazy. Better food, better atmosphere, just better overall. During my first visit, I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the chefs, Dustin, and I could hear the passion for cooking in how he spoke about this role here. He broke down all their vegan options for me and made sure my first burrito was an absolute hit. It's probably that first visit that got me hooked, so G y G is lucky to have a guy like him. Two vegan mayos, chipotle or herb, both delicious. Pulled shiitake mushroom, seasoned beautifully and cooked to order. Perfectly cooked rice, yummy fajita veggies, salsa options galore, it was all spot on. Super authentic Mexican? No, but that's ok. "Inspired by authentic Mexican food" is fine by me. And how'd they manage to get so many friendly employees? I've been here a half a dozen times, and everyone is so damn chipper and happy to help. Plus, the music is upbeat and fun, not some dreary corporate playlist. I actually *want* to eat in, which I rarely look forward to in a fast food spot. I'm loving it. There are times when you just need something satisfying and fast that doesn't break the bank. This place brings that energy via fresh ingredients prepared with expertise.
