Having travelled extensively throughout Europe, personally & professionally, I am a fan of Belgium Chocolate, generally, with a higher Cacao content, over the Swiss Chocolates, generally a higher content of exceptional milk fats. With that being said, Belgian Chocolatier Piron does not disappoint, and their chocolates are on par with those I enjoyed and purchased in Belgium. My quest for the perfect gift brought me to Evanston and Piron. I was greeted warmly when I entered the shop. I mentioned what I was after (a gift box of assorted chocolates), I was asked a number of questions (milk/dark, liquor infused?, spiced, marizipan? etc) to guide the selection. Alternatively, I could have chosen each individual piece. The chocolates were placed with care into an attractive box with a pamphlet describing each variety by shape. I even got to choose the color of the ribbon wrapping it. They certainly take great pride in their product and it shows. While everyone is heading downtown to buy their Vosges "High" chocolates, I find solace in knowing I've found my favorite low-key chocolate shop. (Yes, men like chocolate too!) Piron is the anti-Vosges. There are no designer packaging or fancy corporate logos. No non-intuitive flavor combinations like vinegar/hazelnuts, chilis/cinnamon or ginger/wasabi/sesame seeds. Piron makes its chocolates in small batches with traditional flavors like dark and milk chocolate with almonds, hazelnuts, caramel, orange and Grand Marnier. And it uses a refreshingly traditional gold-colored boxes with a small logo. But what really sets Piron apart is the quality of its chocolates. Like most European-style chocolate, it has more cocoa and less sugar and yields a complex taste experience. Unlike other shops where exotic flavors completely overpower your taste buds for the first 30 seconds, then end abruptly leaving you hanging, Piron chocolates, even the most traditional flavors, stay in your mouth for an extended period of time, giving you a complex yet properly nuanced bouquet of flavor. read more

Discovered this place some 10 years ago after I returned from Brussels, Belgium. Prior to my trip, I always thought I was not a chocolate person. I don't like Hershey's and definitely not See's. Godiva is good but I can do with or with out. Well, real high quality Belgian chocolate changed my view on Chocolates. Chocolates in Belgium are soft, almost always freshly made (on premises), flavorful and creamy. Upon my return, I learned from a colleague that there is a Belgian chocolatier that makes fresh artisan chocolate just 2 blocks away from where I lived at the time in Evanston! Apparently this guy and his father before him have been making chocolates forever. When I lived in Evanston & Chicago, I used to visit Piron virtually monthly to buy birthday and holiday gifts and a box or two for myself from time to time. It's some of the best chocolates around. The first time I had Piron's chocolate was at a gala for charity back in 2000. I couldn't believe I'd been by the shop dozens of time and never noticed it. Since then, it's become my go-to place when I'm in need of a high-quality gift of chocolate. I would pick up bars of their high cacao dark chocolate for my nephew on occasion, some truffles or toffee for a girlfriend. On my visit of February 28, 2014, I discovered their hot chocolate. I purchased my first electric guitar down the street at Guitar Works up the street, and found my sales guy there so laid-back and helpful that I also picked him up a thank you, some chocolate covered raspberry animal shapes. What they have is beautiful, not just flavorful. Hard to say to chocolate that looks to be a piece of art. read more

This is by far my favorite chocolate shop in Chicago. The truffles are made fresh daily and will seriously melt in your mouth. So delicious! The staff are all very nice and happy to answer questions. They have a wide variety of specialty chocolates as well as the standard favorites. In addition to the truffles, I also like the bladij and the chili pepper chocolates. Beware - the line can get long, especially right after the work day, and the truffles run out! read more

These are absolutely the most delicious chocolates I have ever had! I stopped by to grab a few gifts after hearing rave reviews about Piron. When I walked in, I was so pleased that the store just smells like real chocolate. The front of the store is small, with just the display cases of chocolates, toffees, and barks, but you can see an expansive kitchen in back where they make everything. On a whim, I decided to grab some chocolate, toffee, and bark for myself. I'm usually not a huge fan of chocolates, because they sometimes have a strange aftertaste. But these chocolates were incredible. The only way to describe them is REAL chocolate, with delicious, flavorful fillings/ganaches/etc. The English toffee was perfect, and the dark chocolate-almond-cherry bark was incredible. Yes, prices are a bit steep, but so very worth it for that special occasion or when you just really need some good chocolate. I will certainly be back to sample some more things soon! read more

If you love dark chocolate, need to avoid preservatives and fillers and other junk even in some more well known high end brands, this is the place for you. I was up in Evanston with a friend and we were waiting for Kuni's (on the same street) to open, and so we ended up in this lovely, lovely shop. The man behind the counter was engaging, fun, passionate about the product line and the owners, and after coming home and trying one of the items I purchased, I can see why. The flavors are rich, with the depth of home made chocolates where there have not been shortcuts taken. My mom used to make chocolates occasionally, and there is absolutely nothing better than hand made chocolates done with quality ingredients. Since I was having company, I purchased a medly of chocolates, including the dark chocolate with rice (yes, like Crispies!) and it was like a bite of heaven. Their dark chocolate with dark cherries was delish. Okay, so everything I bought was Nirvana disguised as chocolate. As a chocolate lover, I'm also very, very picky about what I consider to be in my "must have" category, and I found it incomparable to anything currently on the market. They are not cheap, but they shouldn't be. The chocolates are handmade, incredibly fresh and AMAZING! Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to chocolate selection, but having tried everything they make in this shop, I can assure you that you will pick a winner every time. What I really like about this place (aside from the delicious chocolates!), was the fantastic service provided. One of the ladies behind the counter asked if I had ever been in the shop before, and when I admitted no, she explained a little bit about the owner and his experience w/ creating the sweets. Piron offers filled chocolates, pure chocolate, chocolate barks, and chocolate-covered fruit. I've tried and liked most of filled chocolates, and I love their almond and cherry dark chocolate bark. Pro tip: if you're just buying chocolates for yourself, save some money by buying the chocolates from the "ugly tray," which are just as tasty, if not as pristine-looking, as the regular chocolates on the adjacent shelves. If instead you're buying chocolates as a gift, they offer both regular and nicer packaging options. In general I've received great service from the staff here. read more

I understand that Americans generally have a different taste for chocolate then Belgium, and that this store has to accommodate that, but when say that you have a Belgian chocolate store, I want fine delicious Belgian chocolate!! Yes, this is the best Belgian chocolatier in the state - as far as I'm aware. I would even venture to say that the chocolate treats here are awesome without being attached to Belgium. I needed to buy a gift for a chocolate lover and ventured into this store. The chocolates looked lovely but having never been here before I inquired about samples. No samples Ok fine. I'll buy some samples for myself just to test out before buying in bulk. Taste them and they're great. Go to pay and have a heart attack because they are $2 PER TINY PIECE! Uh what? I felt like I was back in Belgium the minute I took a bite out of the nut barks. I bought a variety of the nut bark pieces for the family. I finished it all in two days. My husband nor my child know this place exists because I ate it all. The chocolate has the just right amount of deep, bitter and sweet flavors. It was so smooth that it just melts away so quickly. Truly, I believe chocolate should be its own food group. Lately, I am finding chocolate shops are popping up everywhere. But alas, this is still the finest chocolate in all of Chicagoland. No, they do not have modern flavor infusions like wasabi and black sesame seed or Hawaiian red sea salt. They do, however, have the finest Belgian chocolate and the smoothest fillings around. If you're looking for a gift "in a pinch", you can't go wrong with this chocolatier. Want proof? Visit them right before Valentine's or Mother's Day and experience a continuous line of fifteen people who are ALL buying chocolate. Mind you, I'm not complaining. Nor will I complain about $1-2 for a single piece of chocolate, given that it absolves me from having to last-minute shop anywhere else. The staff is friendly and very helpful in navigating the vast selection. Once finished, they offer to wrap it in a box a ribbon, ready to gift. Personally, I'm not such a huge chocolate fan. The chocolates we served and sent home at an engagement party today were exquisite. Glad I bought the goodies for the hostess gift for Thanksgiving already, as I imagine the place will be very busy. They had the usual hallow turkeys, and turkeys on a stick. My favorite is the big chocolate wishbone I also found to bring along. I have never seen that shape before and think it will be a winner. The chocolate cornucopia of goodies was also a sight to behold. These are the most clever chocolate artists, with the best tasting treats. They put Godiva to shame. read more

I had to stop in here because the bottom of their awning said 'Exquisite Chocolates'. Not just 'fine chocolates', but 'Exquisite'. They did not disappoint. I'm a toffee fan and their toffee was miles above others I've had. It had a good crunch to it and the chocolate just melted in your mouth. My wife and I also got an assortment of their other chocolates and everything was fantastic. Not overly sweet or rich, just the right amount. It is expensive, so I would limit this to special occasions, but if you want 'exquisite' chocolates, for yourself or a gift for someone that appreciates good chocolate, then this is the place. read more

My wife loves chocolate. Not just an chocolate though, she will only eat chocolate from Belgian Chocolatier. She has eaten other chocolate in the past, however she prefers to only eat the chocolate from here. I love coming here, not only to pick something up or because I am with my wife, but I like to stop in once in a while on my own to just look around. I love the variety. Great place.
