October 5, 2024 - Jacksonville, OR We were walking through Jacksonville, looking for a place to eat lunch, and we just happened upon Bella Union. We stepped in, and were greeted immediately. Our hostess asked if we wanted to eat outside on the patio, which we decided was perfect, especially after she told us they had outside heaters. We walked through the bar area to get to the patio. The bar looks like a fun place to hang out...for another time. Today it is all about lunch. We were seated at a table, and we noticed immediately that the patio was covered with a vine bush. It wasn't long before we realized there was a bit of bird activity going on above our heads as vine leaves floated down on our table. Kind of charming, but also I couldn't help but hope that only leaves were going to come from the birds above. We ordered a meatball sandwich to split. The sandwich came with a side salad, and we ordered one extra side salad. They served the split sandwich on two separate plates, which ALWAYS earns extra points for the restaurant in my book. The meatball sandwich was delicious, and the salad was fresh and served with a house blue cheese vinaigrette dressing that was wonderful. Sounds like a change in the previous menu. The Mediterranean salad my husband had with chicken he said was really good. They had some tasty white bread for the table. My Mom and I got the BBQ pulled pork which had a great smoky flavor almost didn't need the sauce. Really enjoyed. I opted not to get a side with mine and they gave me an al a cart price which was nice. My Mom got a salad as her side and it was huge!! I do wish they had fries or tots as an option for a side. Sat outside and they had heaters and coverage for rain. Birds around hoping for a snack but no fries to steal. Cool old building so spend some time reading the signs and looking at pictures. We have eaten at the Bella for years and love coming here when we are in town. We were here on a busy Friday night and for some reason they were understaffed. However, we would never have known because our server, Sam, was absolutely incredible! He never seemed stressed or rushed and our service was perfect even though every table was full. How this place only gets a 3.5 star rating is a mystery to me. I have been coming here for about five years, albeit once a year when visiting friends in Medford. I was just here again last week, and the experience was great as always. The street view is deceptive, as there is a beautiful wisteria covered patio once you travel through the foyer and bar area. The bar area has a great vibe itself, although I have yet to spend any time there. All of the employees including Lindsey our server were very pleasant and helpful. As for the food, it is always amazing. I had a gluten free pizza that was delicious. Once of my friends had a pastrami sandwich that he claims was the best he has ever had. Vegetables are perfectly cooked and lightly seasoned. Oyster shooter are fresh and well balanced with a light cocktail sauce. One shooter has 3 smaller oysters, one shooter has 2 medium sized oysters (enough to fill a shot glass) $4/per without alcohol. The cucumber cooler with gin for $10 was served in a tall skinny glass with a slice of cucumber and lemon. It was well balanced and refreshing. It wasn't at all boozy, but it was nice to sip on in the heat of the day. The add-on of a stuffed potato for $9 was a large russet potatoes, double cooked. It was tasty, but it's still just a potato for $9 *eh* Cod entree with a butter garlic baby shrimp sauce was delicious! Came with a small portion of spaghetti noodles, small portion of seasonal vegetables and a nice sized side salad $30. The back patio seating was very inviting but there were a lot of flies on a hot summer afternoon. Green plastic lawn chairs to sit in. Came here for lunch on a recommendation. Menu looks amazing, ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce + 2 meatballs ($17). The bowl of spaghetti came in something the size of a small cereal bowl and was the smallest portion of spaghetti I have ever received at a restaurant. The meatballs were small and dry (pretty sure they were once frozen in a bag - similar size, texture and taste of bulk frozen meatballs). The meat sauce flavor was good, but there was an oddly large pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl (what??) which prompted me to transfer my spaghetti to my small bread plate (which was large enough given the tiny portion). I took a picture of the pool of oil to post because it seemed so odd. I would not come back here given the price point vs portion size and odd preparation method. Well worth the wait on a busy Saturday evening during the holidays. We were seated in a lovely booth in the back that was comfortable, fairly quiet, and very relaxing. Service was mediocre and slow. They cut like half the ingredients from their salads and I swear they shrunk the proportions. The only saving grace of this place is the atmosphere, but I would highly discouraged anyone about to eat there. Based on the responses from the newer owners or management I don't even think that complaining to them will get you anywhere but more disappointments. We stopped here at the recommendation of a local couple - it was perfect for a weekend lunch with kids! We arrived at 12:30 on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. Servers were friendly and responsive. Kids Mac and Cheese was actually the best we've had anywhere (I was reaching over to get extra bites from my 10-year old!) my husband and I also agreed the clam chowder was outstanding. I loved the ambiance. Not sure about the back rooms that feel a little compartmentalized, but the stars of the ambiance show are the bar area and the patio. This is a weird way to put it, but the secluded, lit, pretty recessed patio was as formal as you can get without being formal at all. It just seems nice but casual. The funky, casual bar has saloon vibes despite the kitschy feel, so I found it very welcoming and high energy with the overabundance of young staff and the live blues act in a corner stage. I think they were singing the blues because they ate there. Nothing atrocious, but the mushroom appetizer was a bit clunky, with runny but tasty masala sauce. The blood orange hef was one of the best beers I've had. But we weren't a fan of the pizza. The pizza flavors were good, but the crust was somewhere between flatbread and middle school cafeteria. read more

Upon recommendation by our AirB&B hosts we were pleased to sample the food here. We had the choice of being seated in the patio which we opted for. Beautiful tree arbor, and lots of festive lighting. If you prefer a little quieter setting as there is live music and dancing inside, the patio area is quite accommodating. My husband was craving pizza so he ordered the Pear Blossom with several types of cheese including blue cheese. I chose the Mediterranean salad which was huge (see photo) with lots of Kalamata olives my favorite and tasty artichoke hearts. Also the dough knots with the sweet pasta dipping sauce. All the food arrived per their preferred temperatures- pizza was hot, and salad was nice and cold. More then enough food to share and leftovers to take away. Should we venture this way again we will definitely return to the Bella Union and ask for Alise who is very friendly and personable as our server. Prices are very reasonable. One of the most disappointing meals in a long time. Two stars for great wines (local of course) and the music (Danielle Kelley is amazing). Service was excellent at first then turned to sad at the end. We waited 30 minutes to get our check. We also waited 15-30 minutes between EVEWRY item we ordered. We were there 2.5 hours! (sad face emoji) So... Let's start with the steamed shrimp appetizer (they charge .30 each). They tasted pretty good till I noticed that they all had their "veins" intact. Then I started cleaning them with my knife figuring they missed a few (it happens). Oh no! When I talked to the manager later, she said, "Oh we don't de-vein the shrimp". The server said "We get a lot of complaints about that." Can you say culinary 101. I don't want to eat shrimp intestines and poop. My chicken dish was cold, overcooked, dry and tasteless. They did remove it from the bill. I ordered Zoodles instead of pasta. It was a minuscule 2 Tb size little plop of zoodles (see picture), and was supposed to be a substitute for the pasta (at a $3 charge). PATHETIC! The rest of the dish (steamed veggies) was cold. The "melted" cheese on the chicken was cold and congealed. The Mrs. had some really good ravioli's, and the sourdough bread served was excellent. Now admittedly they were jammed with Britt Festival patrons, but that's not really an excuse for sub-par high-priced restaurant food. The servers were all running around and over worked, bartenders too. The wait was ok (30 minutes on a Saturday night), and we enjoyed a glass of great wine at the bar while we waited. I've been a sporadic patron of Bella Union since the '90's. Bella Union has always been the McMenamins of Southern Oregon. Beautiful building, inside and out. Nice outdoor dining. Great art. Good entertainment. But, consistently mediocre service and food. Not terrible, just not outstanding. It's definitely worth a stop, but adjust expectations accordingly.
