A Disappointing Experience from Start to Finish. Save Yourself the Trouble We were a group of 12 celebrating a friend's birthday and had been genuinely excited to try this restaurant. Unfortunately, it was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in recent memory. The service was a disaster before we even sat down. Two members of our party, including a 92-year-old woman, arrived first and stood at the entrance for five full minutes without a single staff member greeting or even acknowledging them, and the hostess walked by them twice. When the rest of us arrived, I politely asked the hostess if we could pull over two empty chairs (that were sitting unused right next to our table) to accommodate our group of 12 (I made a reservationfor 10). What followed was baffling. She said she needed to check, then came back and completely ignored my request and half of our party were left standing patiently waiting. I then asked the sous chef directly, same runaround, but this time he chastised me for making the request. My boyfriend asked a third staff member. Also ignored. It took three separate requests before they finally brought out chairs from the back. The condescension throughout this whole ordeal was palpable. The service at the table was equally poor. Our server never introduced herself, never told us her name, and never asked if we needed anything, she just silently poured water and walked away. When we ordered six sparkling waters, only three arrived. When I asked again, she disappeared into the kitchen and came back to tell us they were out. We also had to ask separately for silverware, it was never brought to the table. The menu was shockingly sparse for a "nice" restaurant, three appetizers, two salads, and three entrees (lamb, duck, and market fish). The brisket we saw at another table? Not on the menu because they'd already run out. One of the appetizers was literally store-bought Lay's potato chips with crème fraîche. At a high-end restaurant. I'll let that speak for itself. The entrées were the final letdown. We asked what the fish was and our server had to go ask the chef, it was snapper. Nine of us ordered it. It arrived in small bowls that appeared designed to disguise just how tiny the portion was, think one fish stick's worth of fish. It was clearly a normal portion divided among multiple plates to cover the demand. I had three bites and left hungry. The lamb eaters in our group didn't rave either. The one bright spot, the Johan wine was superb. For the price point and the promise of this restaurant, this was an absolute failure in hospitality, food quality, and basic service. Then our evening turned. We didn't get our entrees for over an hour after our apps and they avoided coming to ask how we were. When the food eventually came out after asking multiple times it was cold and seemed smaller portions than what we'd see online. Would not recommend. Very sad about this one. read more

Visited after the reopening with new Chefs and menus. We opted for the à la carte menu offered on Mondays. We were treated to a lovely evening out which included the amazing Cowhorn wines suggested by our Server (who turned out to be the Chef the evening we were there) and fine dining courses also suggested by our 'server'. Wine first... we had three different pairings each wine with a unique note unlike any other we've tried... in the best possible way! Food next... a true fine dining experience with beautiful presentations and spectacular flavors. Now, we are not typically fine dining people, however last year we had the opportunity to dine at French Laundry as a celebration for a deal closing (for which the host making a ton of dough). I have to say, while the atmosphere and service was a bit different at French Laundry, the Cowhorn courses were on par with French Laundry. So, if that experience is outside of your price range or ability to actually get a reservation, give Cowhorn a go. On atmosphere... the restaurant is in a cute little rustic cottage. Very charming. Overall highly recommend the Cowhorn experience, either à la carte or for their multi-course meal. read more

We have been looking for a new place to eat near Jacksonville and we were so excited to try Cowhorn. From the moment we walked in, the entire experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Twelve of us went to Cowhorn to celebrate my daughter's birthday. The reservation was for 10, but we had a change in people the day before. We tried phoning with no luck. When we arrived, we notified the staff there would be 12 of us. The sous chef pushed back and stated that, "it doesn't work like that". He told us that we can't just change our reservation and stated there was not enough room at the table. He also stated that he would have to check with his team. WE moved the chairs around and made room for two additional chairs easily. They made us wait approximately 15 minutes before finally bringing two more chairs. Our waitress arrived, didn't introduce herself and passed out the drink menus. We ordered a couple bottles of wine. She brought the wine but didn't take our order. One hour later we still had not ordered. The menu was extremely disappointing. There were only three entrees-lamb, duck and fish. When we asked what type of fish, our server didn't know!!! Additionally, we asked if the beef salami in the Waldorf salad had pork in it. She stated no. It was only after we pressed her that she stated she would need to check with the chef. It did indeed include pork. The only starter that sounded the least bit appetizing was the chips and dip. Little did we realize they were actually serving potato chips. In our case, it was the bottom of the bag potato chips. Several in our party ordered the fish (it turned out to be snapper). When they brought the fish out in a bowl, I was confused. It looked like they were bringing bowls of soup. My husband had to scrape the fish off the skin. The fish was no thicker than the skin and no wider than two fingers. There was absolutely nothing else in the bowl. $32 for two bites of fish??!! Our server didn't ask if we wanted dessert nor did she bring a dessert out for the birthday girl. Needless to say, we all left extremely hungry. The only saving grace of the evening was their wine. Perhaps they should stick with wine tasting tours and leave the fine dining experience to the Jacksonville Inn. read more

I always enjoy going to a restaurant's official grand opening and putting the new business on Yelp for others to consider. There's a certain fresh energy I find captivating from the front of house staff as well as in the kitchen. Sure, there is usually a bit of confusion as everyone begins to settle into their tasks, but it's really nice to see it in action. This new establishment is a great mix of culinary variety paired with a wine bar vibe. Lots of wonderful food options that are crafted by a seasoned chef (Tim Payne) who utilizes local ingredients including those grown in their own garden. Their wine list includes locally grown varietals from both Cowhorn and Johan vineyards. The selection of entrees I tried for their first lunch service was fried chicken chopped salad and tagliatelle pasta with a lamb merguez (Ragu). Both were prepared beautifully and tasted great. My husband and I are local to the area and had heard good feedback from the community about the food quality, service, and the overall experience as a whole, this area lacks fine dining options therefore we were truly looking forward to dining here. Unfortunately our experience was sub-par. Our waitress was abrupt, seems rushed, and distracted, I ordered the NY Strip which was bitter which an employee told was due to it being crusted with coffee beans then charred as the "owner is from CA and that form of prep is how they do it", I had to cut off 1/4 of my stake due to the bitter inedible taste. My husbands top hamburger bun was damp/moist to which we were told that the cook washed his hands and must not have dried them well enough before pick up one of the pre-toasted buns. There was no offer to reduce our bill or provide a dessert. Unfortunately we will not return. read more

Very disappointed with my experience at Cowhorn Restaurant. There are extremely limited gluten-free options, and when I ordered one of the few available dishes--the half chicken--it came topped with croutons, making it completely inedible for me. This was after waiting nearly 30 minutes on a Britt Festival night, when time is tight and guests are trying to make it to a performance. Serving a dish that takes half an hour to prepare on a busy event night is a bad idea, especially when dietary restrictions aren't taken seriously. I left hungry and frustrated. I also noticed that the restaurant doesn't seem to respond to reviews, which tells me this feedback will likely fall on deaf ears. That's unfortunate, because guests deserve to feel heard--especially when their health is involved. I'm heading to Gold Beach next week and had planned to eat at Tu Tu' Tun, but after this experience, I'm second-guessing that decision. I can assure you I won't be returning to Cowhorn. We dropped in here for a meal on our way to the airport and it was fabulous. The food was absolutely delicious and the waitress was so nice. She had my husband and I each sample a couple wines so we could get a glass we each liked. Our daughter was with us and she made sure her food came out with the appetizers to keep her happy. We went into this dinner looking to be disappointed and we definitely were not. We've had our eye on this place for a while, but the reviews weren't convincing that we would have a great experience. We made reservations for a Monday night and there were no Britt shows so I think it was pretty slow to begin with. Our server was great, didn't try to be part of our meal, just focused on answering our questions and enhancing the experience whenever possible. The food was outstanding. We had the mushroom toast (truly one of the best dishes I've ever had), an arugula and goat cheese salad, one of the pasta dishes, the chocolate pot, and a bottle of wine. Everything was at the perfect temperature, thoughtfully flavored, and appropriate portions. The only reason it didn't get five stars is that I had emailed the email address provided when you make your reservation with a special request and I never heard back. I have waited to leave this review but now that the latest promotional email blast from this restaurant also came with a computer virus, I don't feel at all bad about reporting our experience. As this is a small operation, we were surprised, but willing to pay a $25 (non refundable if cancelled) deposit for each diner to just make a reservation. The event was Easter brunch. Very few times were available so we were quite surprised to find ourselves the only guests in the entire restaurant for the entire meal. To be fair, we were told that all other diners had already eaten and left before we arrived just after noon. The menu was very limited, included nothing gluten free or vegan in case you're wondering. We deliberated about an egg dish, and asked if we could get the eggs scrambled rather than poached. We were told "no", which seemed odd. Our selection sizes were small, and presentation was average, but the taste was subpar at best. My root vegetable hash tasted of chemical cleaner or disinfectant, the french toast was just toast with an odd bright faux looking pink sauce over and the biscuits and gravy was just one biscuit. The menu descriptions were so vague we had to repeatedly ask questions before decisions. So the food experience was somewhere between a 2 and a 3. What was really the most irritating was the wine experience. We tasted a couple of open wines available and none were really good. Pours were only about 4oz per glass, which was also odd. The real kicker to this most unpleasant experience was the bill. The $75 deposit was not deducted from the bill, but promised to be refunded later. For three people, with gratuity, the total came to $167. Pretty pricey for such a total bust of what should been a lovely meal. Shall I say "not recommended"? read more

My wife and I were really hopeful that this would be great we've been to the vineyard and enjoyed it there but the ambiance, food, and host at the restaurant weren't so good. I'm not sure of his name but we arrived with a 5:00pm reservation and upon arrival noticed there was another couple already there and seated we were then told we would be sitting right next to them. The restaurant is very small and as there was no one else there aside from us and this other couple I thought it would be awkward to be seated next to each other and make it hard for either table to feel like we could enjoy a dinner and conversation. So, I requested a different table and was told 'There is another reservation at 5:00pm that has that table so we won't be able to seat you elsewhere.' Perhaps I should have made it clear that we would take any other table but I didn't, not to mention we were there on time with our 5:00pm reservation and it seems it could've been an easy change. So we awkwardly sat next to the other couple and they seemed to think it awkward too. This would all be fine because I get if you are booked out you need to organize everything but during our meal a walk in came in and was seated across the restaurant from where we are, which made me wonder why we weren't seated there when I had made a request. That all left a bad taste in my mouth but I was open to letting it go if that was only the bad taste left in my mouth. I had a vegan chef plate and my meal was mostly very good except the chef seemed to mix up burnt vs slight char. The broccoli was burnt and inedible, I had to drink more of their wine and plenty of water to get the burnt taste out of my mouth. Due to the way the host had disregarded my request for another table I didn't bother pointing out the poor execution of the burnt broccoli. My wife's meal was the half chicken and she said it was largely just oily and salt. The wine was fine. Long story short I would've rather spent $100+ on cooking at home and gotten some rare bottles of wine. Two stars instead of one because they had vegan options. It's hard to decide where to start this review because the entire experience from beginning to end was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. Being fans of Cowhorn Winery we decided to celebrate our anniversary here and treat our friends to dinner at the same time. The derailment began before we had even arrived at the restaurant. One hour prior to our reservation we received a phone call to firmly remind us that we had a two hour time limit and we would be expected to clear the table in said time. This was extremely poor etiquette and took a bit of enthusiasm out of our mood. Upon arriving at the restaurant we were promptly seated and just as quickly reminded once again that there was a two hour time limit. At this point this was outright rude and in poor taste. Things only got worse from here. First the dinning room was cramped and freezing. As you looked around you could not help notice all the guest sitting with their coats and sweaters on, huddled over their plates like a Siberian soup kitchen. It was a 28 degree evening and the front door was like a subway entrance. There was a steady stream of people coming in and going out to use the restroom, and we were constantly blasted with freezing air. Yes, you have to go out to the shed to use the restroom. By the time we received our first bottle of wine and multiple appetizers, nearly one hour had passed. The anxiety of the time limit was building rapidly and it was hard to focus and enjoy ourselves. The house made bread was not warmed through and the butter it was served with was a salt bomb. The butter may in fact been pulled from the Dead Sea. The rest of the appetizers were your standard bar food fare. Once the entrees arrived we were left grossly underwhelmed. The salmon was MIA and thus I got the halibut. The rest of the party ordered the tartine and two different pasta dishes, and all the entrees were dead on arrival. The halibut was Luke warm, under seasoned, and sitting atop drowning spinach that was not properly trimmed; the whole bowl was a cold, soggy mess. The tartine was basically an appetizer claiming to be an entree, and both the pasta dishes were under seasoned as well and a gummy clump. At this point we were all suspiciously looking at the butter and realized where all the seasoning had gone. If things were not bad enough, about 15 minutes into the disappointing entrees we were kindly provided with a 20 minute warning and asked if we would like to order dessert. We actually had more than 20 minutes, and had to uncomfortably do some basic math with our server to confirm our remaining time. Now I completely understand the need to turn tables, but if you tout yourself as fine dinning and charge on the upper scale for this area, then you better ensure your guests are comfortable, not rushed, and may actually want to return. Four entrees, two bottles of wine, and the unfinished appetizer all staring at us, and the pressure of ordering dessert so we could quickly vacate was enough discomfort. I asked for the check. There was not one clean dish on the table. We dragged our beaten souls out, and as we drove home dazed, confused, and hungry it dawned on me that I had paid $325 for a very poorly executed concept and presentation. We have always been more than happy to spend on good food and service. But frankly, this whole experience let us feeling scammed. There are a lot of things that can be said about such an experience and restaurant, but I will kindly just say that this is a bad restaurant. I can not implore upon you enough to avoid making the same mistake. read more

The burger was presented with a completely burnt bun, the bacon was burnt and the burger, the size of a slide patty was burnt to crisp and seasoned with cayenne pepper instead of normal peppercorn pepper. The fried chicken salad was so good / the dressing was fresh and creamy with a hint of heat and the house-made pasta with Lamb Ragu was complex and delicious as well.
