We had two very night and day experiences here during the same visit. We started on the cool looking rooftop for round número uno, and quickly realized we were about 15 years older than the average age. It felt uncomfortably like a bar for those who are barely turning legal drinking age and eager to pound vodka Red Bulls and lemondrop shots. Not great. We moved down to the ground level bar for round número dos, which easily turned into tres y quatro, where we were impressed by the bourbon selection and felt much more at home. If I could leave one star I would. My boyfriend (black) went to the bar to order me a drink. Every bartender saw him, but did not move to serve him. I (white) decided to step up and once I did, I was served immediately. It left a bad taste in both of our mouths. We come to Bell's because we know they have good service. To be treated this way only turned us away from the bar. It came off as nothing but racism, and I believe that Belle's is better than this kind of bigotry. We will not be coming back. read more

I don't go out to bars often ( and definitely not late at night), but I do enjoy going here in the summer early evening simply for the rooftop bar. Its a great place to stop by after Thursday Night Live and has become one of my favorite places to stop for drinks after work on Fridays thanks to the all you can drink Rose deal from 5-9 pm. I've attended a few private events here inside as well and I've always enjoyed myself here. read more

My husband and I attended the Belle's Happy Hour last evening-a Friday evening during Keeneland racing season and UK Homecoming weekend! What a great crowd! At 7pm the crowd consisted of 20 somethings to 50ish in age. The music was low so it was easy to converse and engage easily with the knowledgeable bartenders! When we have been there in past it seems that between 10-11pm the crowd gets a bit younger. The happy hour was definitely making me happy! us They call it Pappy Hour and from 6-8 PM, they poured $10 1 oz pours of Old Rip Van Winkle, $15 glasses of Caymus Cabernet, and $12 glasses of Veuve Clicquot. I have never seen a Caymus wine special and I was all in!!! We made the trip this particular night to Belle's specifically because of this special. I hope they have these higher end wine specials more often! The wine was fantastic and it was a nice pour. We enjoyed the atmosphere and ambiance of the room while sitting at the bar. We got to chatting with another couple who also enjoy bourbon and wine. Just an enjoyable evening overall! I should absolutely add that Belle's bourbon selection is top notch!! The hard to find bourbons well, you can taste them here!!! We have been to Belle's many times! We love it here and be sure to check out their rooftop bar!!! A big misunderstanding occurred and before I was spoken to about it I was violently grabbed and drug down 2 flights of stairs by 2 MEN while begging to be put down so I could walk myself out. Belle's is a good alternative to a lot of the UK "college" bars that are common in Lexington. With slightly more of an upscale feel, you won't find giant fishbowls with blue alcohol or towers of beer here. The bouncers do enforce a dress code (basically men need to be wearing a collared shirt) and there have been times where I've seen people be turned away because of it. There are upstairs and downstairs bars, with the upstairs having more of a "hunt club" feel- leather couches and animal trophy heads on the walls. I've always had good experiences with the bartenders here- although with the more "upscale" feel comes more "upscale" prices- anytime I have to pay more than $3 for a bud light I cringe inside. It can get pretty packed on Friday and Saturday nights! Overall, Belle's is a solid addition to the Lexington bar scene. read more

I lived in Lexington a few years ago and started becoming accustomed to visiting Belle's weekly. After moving I was sad to hear the establishment had a fire, but nevertheless they prevailed! Back open and better than ever! The bar has three floors, each with a different vibe. The main floor has a wrap around bar - showcasing a wide array of bourbon (if it ain't Bourbon, it ain't Kentucky). The second floor also offers a bar, but has lounge seating and plenty of area for dancing. Last but not least, the top floor - enclosed in the winter and overlooking to the city. Will update the review after they're open longer than a week. It's too early to make a call, but this place amazingly doesn't duplicate the feel of any other bar in the area. The main bar is huge and the setup is very stylish with illuminated quartz sheets providing a background for displaying the impressive array of bourbon. Tv's adorn the walls, but it's not sensory overload, and he vibe lends itself to social interaction. The Upstairs lounge has another smaller bar in the far corner, and the seating is both couch and bar top table. The exposed brick appointments are warm and don't make the place feel too industrial. I'm excited for what this place will provide for bar patrons in the Short Street area. As for now, it may take them a while to get its sea legs but it seems to be off and rolling on the right foot. read more

Really cool place. 3 levels with bars at each level. The rooftop is cool vibes. Only thing that sucks is that the drinks are overpriced, but that's because it's all college kids there from UK. Also lots of underage kids with fakes in there. Other than that, I'm giving it an extra star because of the staff there. The bouncers were soooo nice to us! If you are looking for laid back this isn't your place. This was suggested to us by a local. We had just left a Saturday night game at Rupp, so you could guess how we were dressed. This place looks very cool inside. Awesome rugged cabin feel upstairs with trunk tables and a small bar. Downstairs when you enter you see a large very stocked bourbon bar. Hard to get a drink downstairs and if you aren't wearing a sport coat or a suit as a guy, and a dress for a girl you won't fit in. This place has the very upscale crowd on Saturday night. Most people looked like they just left an executive board meeting. Music playing was good. No DJ or live music is a downside for me. A bunch of us guys, a bachelor party, came here after dinner on a Saturday night upon recommendation of our waiter at the restaurant - SOLID recommendation. Decor: Downstairs is a pretty average bar/quasi-club area. The bar is huge, but understaffed, and it was wall-to-wall people. It was, oddly, very well lit for a bar. Upstairs was more of a lounge-ish feel but still not many places at all to sit. There is more of a tavern feel upstairs and much less "going on" compared to the floor below. It is still very much a bar but the much more enjoyable choice. Bathroom: Pretty clean and well lit, it got the job done. Staff: The bartender upstairs was great! He was fast with drinks and made delicious cocktails. Downstairs, however, was a train wreck. I don't know if they were understaffed when we were there but there were 3 bartenders working the HUGE bar - really there should have been about 7. It took FOREVER to even get someone's attention to order a drink. It was absolutely ridiculous and frustrating. Food/Drinks: It was a bar so they had everything you could want. I stuck to beer but a few had mixed drinks without exclaiming that they were "exceptional" or "horrible." Value: The prices were not bad. Beers were pretty cheap and any cocktail was (it seemed) less than $10. Where you really get your money's worth, however, is the clientele. Seriously, this place is a GOLDMINE of hot... and I mean HOT! chicks. If you're looking for a place to go with your buddies than this is your spot. You won't be disappointed. Let's start with your bartender that night: after promptly taking our drink orders, she proceeds to get the glasses for our drinks, then, while holding them in her left hand, applies lip gloss in your mirror behind the bar. Gross. She then makes our drinks and serves them in those very glasses. Maybe no gloss fell in the glass, but still, I don't want to see that. Can get really crowded- but they are typically staffed well enough to accommodate the crowds ! Extremely rude and prejudice! Went here with 5 others, three girls two guys. All the girls got admitted in after being carded while the first guy to be carded got denied. I asked him why our friend wasn't allowed and he gave the cliché "holes in jeans". When I asked the bouncer if it had anything to do with him being Mexican and gay he looked us girls up and down and said if it was up to him he wouldn't let us girls in for how we were dressed. Ironically after he allowed us entrance. I do wonder how many POC or lgtbq they decline at the door. I'm very glad we didn't spend any money at this establishment. While seemingly they are genuine and grateful they will always be there to tell you how horrible you and every person is. Aside from Collin (a fabulous bartender) the entire establishment is shit. I understand trying to close down a bar as I was a bartender in a nightclub for 5 years. However, the security staff took advantage of me while I was only trying to finish a drink. Grabbing and throwing me down stairs as I simply said "I can walk down the front". However, they did ask everyone to move down stairs, as I had made my way toward the exit they targeted me and had displayed aggression towards me as they ripped me down the stairs. However may I mention that I believe that this was not only a lash out but a sexiest moment where I was amongst women who were left alone. I spoke with the police and they all said it was ok and said to just go home. So not only was this incident harmful to the bar and me but it was also harmful to the Lexington community saying that the Lexington PD is NOT protecting those who need it. This is shameful to both the community and the bar. Sorry to say lexington that this bar is a horrid mess and I wish it was otherwise. The doormen are nice. That's about it. This place is very hipster-ish. VERY. I stood at the bar, cash in hand, for 24min37sec (yes, I timed it) before the bar tender upstairs acknowledged me. All the while, about 14 other people had been served and the cocktail girls got their orders filled. "Do you need something?" he asked. "Well now that everybody else in the bar has a drink, would you mind getting me one?" I replied. Also, any bar that is attempting to portray an upscale atmosphere in Lexington had better learn how to make a Manhattan. At first, this amateur grabs Jack Daniel's to start. You don't put that Tennessee swill in a Manhattan, and I would certainly never drink it otherwise. Secondly, after he remembered what bourbon is, he makes the drink and pours it over ice. Of course I insisted that he make it again - he was very upset that I disapproved of his interpretation of a Manhattan. Perhaps he was just upset that he had no idea how to make a Manhattan. A MANHATTAN. When it finally appeared he had figured it out, the taste was pretty far off. I guess if you like Manhattans with Jack Daniel's and 30 shakes of bitters, this is the place for you. I suppose if you just need somebody to open your beers for you and want to look at cool African animal mounts on the wall, you will love this place! read more

Tried this place for the first time last weekend. I'm a craft beer drinker so I was happy with the selection. Yay for New Belgium! Other than that, the bar was VERY packed. It took me 10 minutes just to get a glance from the bartenders. I was more frustrated that people had to ask for complicated drinks when they could see how slammed the bar was. Just get a beer....geez!! I may venture back on a different day that is not so busy to see if the service gets any better. The atmosphere is accurate to another review - "here's my daddy's black AMEX" and lots of side-eyes given. The price for my beer, being craft, was what one would expect to pay for good quality beer. Based on the other reviews, I expected this place and its customers to be a lot snobbier. Maybe I'm a snob so I just felt like I fit in or maybe we just got there at the right time (before the UK game got out), but I thought Belle's had a really cool vibe. I think the experience you have definitely depends on the night and time you go. Obviously 10pm the night of a Saturday UK game is going to be nuts, but otherwise you should be able to have a pretty chill time here. It definitely looked fancier than the kind of hipster vibe I got from it, so if you're expecting an upscale speakeasy environment that's not really this place. But if you want to hang out with a great drink, come here! Also props for using the proper glasses for each drink. It makes such a difference! read more
