I've been on a sandwich hunt all year for the best Turkey Sandwich and decided to give this spot a try. Parking was easy with a little lot in front, ambiance is dated and very casual, and the customer service was quite good with a friendly guy behind the register. I opted for the "build your own sandwich" option and had Turkey & provolone on wheat. All the veggies were fresh, the turkey was pretty good, and the wheat bread was standard like something you'd get at a grocery. This Sando was a little basic and forgettable, but a great value at $12.99. This is less a sandwich place than a chicken place now. Their chicken takes center stage - and honestly - it didn't look that good. Think 7-Eleven style chicken under warming lights. But I did get a veggie sub which was excellent - although the mayo and mustard made the bread soggy it was still delicious. I also got a small container of pasta salad which tasted and appeared freshly made with a lot of veggies in it. The service was quick and kind - the girl in the kitchen saw the long line of people ordering and walked my sandwich out to me - that was nice! I've been going to Ben Franklin's for over 30 years, but ever since it sold, it's just not the same. The classic numbered sandwiches--like my longtime favorite, the #11--are gone. The new focus seems to be on fried chicken, which feels totally out of place for what was once a beloved sandwich shop. The bread has changed (not for the better), and the Turkey Ortega now comes with chopped canned chilies instead of the long, flavorful Ortega strips they used to use. They toast it now, when it used to be warmed--yes, there's a difference, and it matters. On top of that, they've removed the iconic purple dragon artwork that helped give the place its charm. Ordering online on their own website? That'll cost you extra, which makes zero sense when phoning in the same order is free--so much for convenience. They call the extra charge a 'convenience charge' for placing your order online when it is only saving Ben Franklin's time. I've given it about five chances since the ownership change, and each time has been a letdown. My last sandwich was a sad attempt at recreating the old #11 and was drowned in watery mayo and mustard. It's a real shame--this used to be one of my favorite spots, and the location is still super convenient. But the heart of Ben Franklin's is gone. read more

I used to come here extremely often and the staff were always amazing and polite and the food was amazing. I came in on a Saturday and I waited for a sandwich order for 40 minutes!!! I walked up to ask about the status of the order and the girl at the counter had left it sitting there the entire time and didn't call my order. Mind you, there were only a few people in the restaurant. It was not slammed with people. She was polite about it and apologized though....the bigger concern was that the whole place has a lot of baby flies flying around and landing on food. From my experience from other deli places specialty sandwiches have the items chosen out already unless your "Building your own." No need to pick unless you're going to omit. Anyhow, I ordered their special (pastrami,strip with a sauce on marble, toasted), hubby their specialty Rueben toasted, and son his tuna melt. All 3 was $60 w/chips. Dry,dry,dry. Mine had the wrong bread, which could be overseen If it tasted good. Sauce only on 1 side the other dry. The Rueben did not come toasted and dry. Tuna melt was OK. I walked in and it's a cute little shack of a restaurant with tables inside and out- and smells divine. The man that was inside was super nice! For my Too Good To Go he made me a cold Italian sandwich. I shared it with my friend in a parking space on Marsh sweet. We both took a bite and just looked at each other and sighed. This was the best sandwich we had ever eaten. The roll was warm and fresh- i think it was French bread- I'm not good with bread names- the veggies were super fresh and the meat combination was tasty. Not a very cheerful young woman taking orders although the owner handed me my sandwich with a great smile and the service was quick. Chip variety is off the chart. The sandwiches offered all look good or you can build your own. I ordered the Ben's ATC. I found it difficult to eat. The avocado was thick and made the other sandwich toppings slide around. It was messy after the first two bites. Very annoying so I just started eating the insides by hand. An older gentleman commented while I was waiting for my order that he ate his with a fork and knife. Now I know what he meant!! Wish I would have had his utensils.... Ended up at Ben Franklin's after getting into town around 1:30 with a couple friends and attempting to order lunch at High Street around the corner, but their wait was over 2 hours long and we were starving. I liked this place so much I came back the following day to try their Tuna sandwich with the works & mix veggies. The tuna itself was pretty good & complimented well with the oil & vinegar. Way better then the tuna sandwich I order at subway. Subway got nothing on these sandwiches lol. I also got myself their AMS sandwich before I left town which has all of their meats & mozzarella cheese. The meats were all so tasty & fresh. Definitely recommend this one as it's clearly a winner! I also ordered their side of chicken noodle soup. It was decent however you can save those calories for the sandwiches. I might've been here once before in my 35 years on the central coast. But I usually go to high Street. It takes so long to get anything from high Street and today we couldn't even get it quick enough ordering on the app two hours in advance so we Went here after doctors appointment. When we walked into the sandwich shop, I thought for a moment that it was a chicken restaurant because when I looked up on the wall, I saw was a electronic menu board with chicken Things on it. A turkey sandwich and then an eggsalad for my mom customized with wonderful vegetables on Dutch crunch bread. We also picked up a fabulous pasta salad. Whilst we were waiting for our food, presumably because I had asked a gentleman behind the counter if he was the owner and if it was a new owner, he said yes, etc---but while we were waiting, he brought a little box of chicken strips and a chicken thigh and some roasted potato wedges. He said that we could sample the chicken while we were waiting for our food. Wow! How nice is that??? Was very very good chicken and potatoes!! . The place was super clean and very fast service. No problem getting parking, we did arrive well in advance of noon though. The food was very good. my son and I split a turkey sandwich on French bread. Delicious bread, onions, good tomatoes, wonderful, shredded lettuce. As far as other recent comments about people being upset about the change, I totally get it because I have a very low tolerance for change myself and literally get so sad and cannot stand change. But I thought this was completely fine and I was very happy. I especially like the customer service. Customer error service in SLO is often the worst ever with the students that just do not care. This place had a very nice young man at the register who helped me making sure (at my request) that I got a couple of good sandwiches built.
