Craving a sandwich and not wanting to deal with the crowds from another local sandwich place, we decided to give Ben Franklin's a try. I'm glad we did! This place is delicious! I got a Ben's ATC which has a Avocado mixture in it (cream cheese and avocado) on a soft French Roll, and the works (Oil&Vinegar, Mayo, Dijon Mustard, tomatoes, pickles, onion, lettuce and black pepper). I might've been here once before in my 35 years on the central coast. But I usually go to high Street. It takes so long to get anything from high Street and today we couldn't even get it quick enough ordering on the app two hours in advance so we Went here after doctors appointment. First of all the service was instantly 10 times better than you get at the doctors appointment where they make you enter your own data nowadays. When we walked into the sandwich shop, I thought for a moment that it was a chicken restaurant because when I looked up on the wall, I saw was a electronic menu board with chicken Things on it. But I was corrected by somebody that was a customer and he showed me where to fill out the paper form. We ordered our sandwiches. A turkey sandwich and then an eggsalad for my mom customized with wonderful vegetables on Dutch crunch bread. We also picked up a fabulous pasta salad. I could not believe how delicious that salad was. Whilst we were waiting for our food, presumably because I had asked a gentleman behind the counter if he was the owner and if it was a new owner, he said yes, etc---but while we were waiting, he brought a little box of chicken strips and a chicken thigh and some roasted potato wedges. He said that we could sample the chicken while we were waiting for our food. Wow! How nice is that??? Was very very good chicken and potatoes!! . The place was super clean and very fast service. No problem getting parking, we did arrive well in advance of noon though. The food was very good. my son and I split a turkey sandwich on French bread. Delicious bread, onions, good tomatoes, wonderful, shredded lettuce. As far as other recent comments about people being upset about the change, I totally get it because I have a very low tolerance for change myself and literally get so sad and cannot stand change. But I thought this was completely fine and I was very happy. I especially like the customer service. Customer error service in SLO is often the worst ever with the students that just do not care. This place had a very nice young man at the register who helped me making sure (at my request) that I got a couple of good sandwiches built. The first thing I noticed upon parking in their oddly shaped parking lot was the sign advertisement for "chili salads." Upon further inspection of their menu there was in fact, no chili salads as so blatantly advertised. A staple of many sandwich shops includes a toasted bun, which to my disappointment was not found on the menu. Decor was tasteful. I was hungry after a doctors appointment. I had the breakfast sandwich with sausage on jalapeño and cheese bread topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It was delicious. I've held off on reviewing this place. I worked there about 7 years ago so I have an idea of what the food was like and how great the long term staff was. So dedicated to making great food and being efficient. Sometimes they would have orders out before the customer was even done paying! However... my former coworkers and friends that worked there for years got sick of it and left so there's nothing stopping me. I've tried this place again since they changed owners and they've changed EVERYTHING. Everything is canned and barely anything is homemade... I'm bias as a former employee, and of course I loved the food before. But even so, if I had never been there before and knew the previous quality, I would be disappointed. I've tried a few times and have never been able to finish a sandwich. Ingredients are flat out sub par. I walked in one day before I knew it had been sold and thought, wow that's a terrible employee just texting and scowling while standing at the register. Why would they hire someone like that? We decided to stop in for lunch after the Lemon Grove hike. There was no line so we were able to order right away. The service was very good and it did not take long for order to be ready. They currently have indoor and outdoor seating. I ordered the ATC and my husband had the BLT. We also had a side of the jalapeno potato salad. Everything was good, but we wished we would've just split a sandwich as it was way too much! The sandwiches here are awesome! First off, the ingredients are REALLY tasty. Everything tastes fresh and healthy :) Secondly, the portions are BIG. I got the 7 inch sandwich (their smallest one) and it is HUGE!!!! So how much you get for your dollar is great! I have been coming here for years and loved their food, fast service and quirky mural painted on the walls of the dining area. Imagine my surprise to return after a two year hiatus to find it completely renovated with new owners. The interior has been modernized a bit with large screen TVs, beverage center and a self catering fridge full Of drinks and containers of macaroni and potato salads! The menu is not displayed and I assumed they offered the same sandwiches as before. I ordered a 7" roast beef with cheddar for hubby and a ATC for me. I was charged $9.99 each plus a $1.00? Not sure why there was that extra dollar- and the woman taking my order was obviously new. She kept asking what I wanted on it and I kept saying "the works". She was very slow. I paid, got my order number and waited. The staff appeared a bit disorganized and distracted. Finally my order was ready but sat on their counter while the staff distracted themselves. I caught the eye of one and she packed up my order to go. The sandwich was good- meats and bred were fresh but I bit on some hard(old)? Lettuce that was weird. Anyway it's okay but not the same and that makes me sad. The staff aren't as quick, the sandwich not as big and sloppy and the vibe is not the same. Fun atmosphere and friendly service greeted when we walked in and received a suggestion for the ATC (avocado turkey cheese) when we asked what was good. We tried Ben Franklin's as part of a SLO Sandwich comparison food tour. For $8.15 you get a stacked 7" sandwich which is pretty fair and won't leave you hungry. Unfortunately Ben ranked at the bottom of our sandwich tour when scoring for bread, quality, and sauce. The bread was a sourdough roll/loaf with baked well not flimsy. Pretty ideal bread to filling ratio with a guacamole cream cheese sauce with a little vinegar keeping it fresh and good. Much better sandwiches than they had the previous owner, and they done or are in the process of updating the inside. Great job. Only complaint is that I came in at 11am to beat the rush which I did. I was only customer in store but it took well over 10 minutes to get my sandwich. You're going to have to do much better if you want repeati business. The torture they do to make the customers fill out on a piece of paper exactly what they want and then the cash register person having to transfer it to the computer is also a bit maddening. This place is, and has been, my favorite sandwich shop. The #17 and #19 are amazing - and do yourself a favor - just try the french bread. The team here are all very friendly, and the quality of the sandwich is excellent. Ben Franklin's has become a part of my morning routine on my way to work. I'm either stopping by and eating a sausage breakfast sando or picking up a large salad or avocado and cream cheese sandwich to eat on lunch for work. Each time I'm greeted warmly and it's become a highlight of my week to come here. The breakfast sandwiches are the best I've ever had from any sandwich shop in SLO county. The sausage is cooked perfectly, the scrambled eggs are fresh, the cheese is melty perfection, the french roll is bliss (there are multiple bread options available), but you must get the sandwich with the works! It is condiment heaven and I love it on my avocado and cream cheese sandwich as well. It just blends so perfectly with everything on their menu that it either accentuates a flavor (like mustard) or highlights it (like the creaminess of an avocado). Their salads are by far A+ with quality and quantity. I believe it's $6 for a regular, but I always opt for the $8 large as it fills me up on my lunch at work and gives me the energy I need to power through the day. I particularly love their taco salad because they add salsa to it. Which sounds weird, salsa in a salad? But believe me, it works and it works damn well. Today I had their chef salad with house made blue cheese and I was in heaven. They also serve house made brownies, rice krispie treats, and cookies with all of the ingredients plainly listed on the front of it. It's so helpful for people with allergies. I highly recommend coming in and enjoying everything they have to offer. You won't leave unhappy. read more

Simply Subpar Get: I would go to Gus's or High st. deli Pass: Everything First off the place is not very nice on the indisde. The tables were sticky, the ceiling tiles are water stained, and it just didn't feel very welcoming. I got the 26 which has bacon avocado and jack cheese and tomatoes. Nothing was really fresh. The tomatoes weren't bright and juicy, the avocados looked a dull yellow green, the lettuce was iceberg, and the bread was nothing special. Not sure what it was but the avocado was mixed with something waaay too sweet with a hint of spice. Made the spread too much to handle, and I literally did not want to eat anymore. The only redeeming quality (and the reason for one extra star) of this place is the size of sandwich for the price - a 7 inches for 5.47 + tax. that isn't too bad, but still, the quality and price is comparable to subway...and I am almost leaning towards subway for the better sandwich. Came in for lunch. The counter person was very friendly and accommodating. The mister ordered the #1 ham, turkey and cheese $6.48 I ordered the #9 Roast Beef and Jack cheese $6.48 each sandwich is 7 inches. The shop has plenty of seating and is pretty clean. The parking lot is a little odd to get into but not bad. Our food was delivered very quickly!! Blindingly fast! These sandwiches make subway look like amatures! Lots of fillings and locally sourced bread. It was very delicious! The only and I mean it's a tiny thing- is it would have been nice if it where cut in half. I suppose next time I will know to ask.
