I tried the regular chicken sandwich here and was blown away by the presentation and size of it! I honestly don't care for coleslaw, but took a chance and decided to keep it on my sandwich. So glad I did! It adds texture, crunch and neutralizes the hints of spice from the battered fried chicken. Speaking of the battered fried chicken. It was perfectly golden and seasoned. Not too salty or spicy, but just enough to make my tongue tingle. In a good way of course. I couldn't finish my sandwich because it was huge! Not complaining, but it doesn't take me much to get full either. Perfect size for those with bigger appetites. The crinkle fries were good, but overcooked, dry and cold. Wish they would have been warmer because I love crinkle fries. I also ordered the Arnold Palmer, which unfortunately was way too sweet for me. when ordering the food I asked for fresh chicken and fries as it appears the chicken and fries have been sitting on the rack for a while. The gentleman at the register told me now that they won't cook fresh chicken. It comes out every 10 to 15 minutes. read more

We got to the San Luis Obispo marketplace right before noon and we're able to find a parking space in the back. The best of all jaybird chickens didn't have a line so we ordered our usual chop with very mild spices and waited for the results. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Jay birds is a well oiled machine so within a few minutes our orders were out and we were able to take the to go boxes out to the shady patio where we feasted on the spicy mild chicken with the delicious comeback sauce on the side.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This place is popular, so come early and be prepared for a line but also for some of the best chicken you've eaten. read more

One of my favorite fried chicken places on the central coast! The staff are usually not too chatty but the food is awesome. Located in a food hall with lots of other dining options Jays Birds chicken sure does stand out! Service was quick and efficient, employees were kind as well. The presentation of the food was perfect. There is also lots of seating indoor and outdoor and even on the rooftop. There is even a play area for kids on the top floor. As for the food, the chickens was so juicy with the perfect amount of spice! Fries were great as well, as for the sauces i do wish they had more options, the ketchup we got had some extra seasonings in it that we didn't expect but was still good. read more

This was an enjoyable time at SLO Public Market. Had a pretty good hot chicken sandwich and the spicy fries aren't really spicy, but they have good flavor. The chicken was fried well and still juicy, the sauce had good flavor and nice under heat. Worth a shot if I'm the area and want some soul food. read more

I ordered the hot chicken sandwich. The portion of chicken was generous, perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The crinkle fries were crisp and exactly what you hope for from a classic crinkle cut. The ranch was a pleasant surprise - it was very flavorful and a perfect pairing for the heat. Next time, I'll kick it up a notch with a spicier level, but overall, this was an above-standard chicken sandwich worth coming back for. read more

Parking sucks !! That said, it's worth hassling with the too-small parking lot to eat their yummy chicken strips. I'm a spice whip so I get the plain or very mild, and it's just right for me. My friend got the very hot and my eyes hurt just looking at it. Drinks are on the small side and a side of Cole slaw is more than $4, but again - the chicken is really good. read more

We ordered "the chop" with no heat. It came with very spicy sauce all over it. I asked the manager for a new salad, and she argued with me that I had gotten what I ordered. She did not offer to replace it, so we had to scrape the sauce off and eat what was left. This was after we had left a tip. The customer service at this place has always been sketchy! read more

The tenders were not great and the service was subpar. The cashier seemed annoyed having to explain the flavors of the two sauce options to me. Then when I got my food they gave me the wrong sauce. When I asked for the correct sauce she seemed annoyed. The fries were the only good part. Go to Dave's for better tenders and WAY better service. read more

Stopped by here for a quick bite and was quickly obsessed! Their hot chicken tender & regular chicken tender with fries were so good. Everything was super crispy and moist. I would highly suggest getting their sauces too to go along with the tenders. Totally worth it! PSA. I believe they have the best fries in SLO. Super crispy and salted perfectly! I've been coming to Jay Birds for about a year now and honestly, every time I've paid a visit, the staff is always super kind and attentive. My usual order is either Two Tenders and fries or the Mac Daddy sandwich & fries- both are incredibly yummy and SO filling (sometimes I add a solo tender for fun). I tend to order take out and they're very accomodating to both eating in or taking out. There's always pickles added to the meal and I appreciate the fact that they're crisp and not super soggy. The wait time for Jay Bird's is honestly not bad- maybe 10-15 mins on a busy day but you're practically in and out in about 5 minutes. Jay Bird's is inside of SLO public market and there's plenty of seating. The parking can be a little difficult during lunch and dinner rush, but it's honestly not bad. There's also a tesla charging station in this parking lot. I know this isn't the only hot chicken spot in SLO, but I think the prices here are a little better than the other spot and the food is pretty yummy! read more

Enjoyed my first visit. Had the Mac and Cheese Bird Sandwich and it was delicious. Spicy fries were great too. Make sure to really think about how much heat you want on your sandwich because it is definitely spicy. Make sure to try the lemonade too. Highly recommend that you order in advance online too. Jay's is located in the Public Market in SLO which has various other restaurants/businesses and ample seating (two floors) full of chairs, tables, couches, etc. You can take your food and go upstairs for some nice views so the location is surely a win. Ordered the chicken sandwich with fries and for someone that LOVES a really good hot chicken sandwich I would say that this was a very mediocre chicken sandwich, I would much rather recommend Nate's Hot Chicken! The chicken did not have much flavor and was didn't taste like it had any sauce or seasonings. Overall, I would personally probably not go here again but glad I gave it a try. read more

Today was amazing!!! ..but I was pressed for time so no foodporn pics! Sorry.. I ordered the two tenders medium with the big sexy sauce! Winning combo for if you don't know if you want it hotter.. cause you can add big sexy sauce and slice it up but if you're not feeling it get a ranch to cool you down. Today I wish I had taken a pic but even if I had ya'll might of thought I zoomed in or took the pic to close the two pieces I received were so big in fact one piece was enough! I am a BIG fan of the blazin fries! They taste really good and are relatively inexpensive. So it is a good April to treat yourself after a long day! The one thing to be wary about is the spice levels jump up very fast. I only tried hot once but it was definitely too much for me to handle. I think the medium is a safe bet. The service goes back and forth... sometimes they people working seem a bit rude and low energy. However there is a man there who is always very polite and helpful when he takes my order. The shop is in slo public so there is a lot of area to sit, walk, and just enjoy your day! P.S: make sure to keep a track of your point as I have had people use mine :/ read more

This is the tastiest hot chicken in town for sure. I'd say half the time if not more the service is not good, actually fairly rude. We still go because it's yummy but just a heads up! They also recently started charging for any of their sauces. Their Arnold Palmer completes the meal for sure. I enjoyed my food (sandwich and fries) but the cashier was visibly irritated by me simply asking the difference between "cumback" and "big sexy" sauces. After receiving my food I sat down and realized I got the names wrong and asked to exchange for the one wanted. She gave me a dead stare for about 5 seconds and I asked if there was a problem, and she got mad and reluctantly gave me one and told me that now she had to throw the sauce away (0.5 oz. of buffalo sauce) and I sarcastically apolized for "the trouble". Just her demeanor is enough for me to not want to come back: chicken sandwiches are a dime a dozen around here, I'll be ok. PS: Her coworker gave me a look like she was afraid of her. Yeah. The chicken sammie. It earns the 5-stars on its own. The crinkle fries are damn good, too. Our cashier was on top of her game, and brought a nice smile to the counter, as well. Your challenge? Get here early. We arrived at 1145 on a Friday. Waited 10 mins in line, another 10 mins for food. Not complaining, because the food is served fresh. It's my first time trying Nashville Hot Chicken and it was a pleasant surprise! The owner Jay was there today and he came out to greet those that were in line :). The workers there have good energy and are customer oriented. I got the chicken and waffles and my bf got the Mac Daddy sandwich with fries. They let you choose spice level! I got mild, and he got Hot. We both think we should get more spicy next time - waffles are light and chewy, while crispy on the outside! Goes really well with maple syrup and chicken. - the mac daddy has a good texture. It was both crunchy from the chicken and soft from the macaroni. We would recommend both! read more

Food is decent but they have lowered the portion sizes noticeably over the months. They also raised the price of their Blazin Fries but decreased the portion size; used to comfortably fill up half the box so I think I'll spend my money elsewhere. read more

I hate to say it but in terms of Nashville hot chicken.. this is probably the worse one I've had. Howlin Ray's, Hot Boys, and Dave's Hot Chicken are tiers better. The spice levels here are way off, definitely not spicy at all. In terms of taste, everything was mediocre. The cole slaw was literally slaw grabbed from the bag and sprinkled with some lemon juice. Service was good and they offered free cold water to counter the hot day, so these bring up the 2 stars to 3. read more

It's good, but I think it's hyped up a bit. Jay Bird's is located in the public market; however, the wait is pretty long and slow. We waited probably a total of 30 minutes before we could even order... which isn't bad unless it's when you get to the cashier and she just tell you to wait, while you just watch her fold the paper sleeves. I bet it's to catch up on current orders, but it'd be nice to be told rather than just stand there without updates. We ordered the mild and medium chicken tenders with fries and Mac and cheese, and the chicken sandwich. The chicken tenders were very tender and quite spicy for even the mild. The fries were really well seasoned and good. I just wish they were more crispy. I didn't try the chicken sandwich, but it looked really good. Had mac and cheese in it with a bit piece of chicken in it. Yum! Will definitely try next time. Will definitely still come back when I'm craving fried chicken though. read more

We stopped into the SLO Public Market for a quick dinner and settled on Jay Bird's Chicken. We got the chicken and waffles and the chicken sandwich, both medium spice. I asked for extra fries too since the waffles doesn't come with them. The person behind the counter said there wasn't enough for two with the sandwich, but, there certainly was. It was a lot of fries overall! The medium spice, of five levels, was pretty spicy. I'd hate to see what the level five is! The chicken was pretty good but the waffles were pretty small. They were very flavorful, though, and mated well with the chicken. The sandwich was so big that it was almost hard to eat. But, it was also really good and the chicken was juicy. The fries were spicy but not too spicy and we loved all of it. This is certainly a place to check out at this building. read more

I've been to the market multiple times and wanted to try this place after seeing how good it looked. The service was great and you don't have to wait too long for your food. I was so excited to finally try this place. After my first bite of the sandwich, I was very disappointed. What's really weird is the chicken is tasteless but over seasoned. I know that doesn't make any sense but it's so true. The chicken is also very greasy. The fries are very over season and taste worse than frozen section fries at the grocery store. This was easily one of the best burgers I've ever had. My wife would not stop talking about hers. Her exact words were, "This burger tastes beefy." After I told the waitress, she said she had to talk to her manager and luckily they took it off the bill. In terms of the food, it was okay. The lights were really dim so I felt as if I was eating in the dark.

Is the rest of the menu also based on the cashier's discretion? Are you capable of pouring champagne and a splash of orange juice into a glass? There are 5 employees milling about, and none of them are bartenders? So... I'm not impressed by the service here and based on that alone I won't be back. I'm just gonna drink this mimosa, wait for my chilaquiles, ask for a box and bounce. I'm irritated I just paid $50 (yes, $50 for chicken chilaquiles and one begrudgingly made mimosa cost me $50) to feel like I inconvenienced them coming in. I didn't ask for a side order of apathy with my breakfast, and for that price, I'm sure I can find an actual bartender.

On arrival, my service dog was heeling calmly and under full control while the bouncer spoke with us. Despite this, I was told I could not enter because the establishment downstairs had previously had "an incident" with a different service animal. Denying access based on a past experience with another dog is not lawful. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service animals may only be excluded if that specific animal is out of control or not housebroken--neither of which applied here. My dog was behaving impeccably and performing their trained tasks. Loudness, past incidents, or personal assumptions are not valid reasons to refuse a service animal. This was not a misunderstanding--it was a refusal of access based on disability. I hope management educates their staff on ADA compliance so future disabled patrons are not treated this way. I will not be spending my money here and urge others to do the same based on their discriminatory behavior.

From the hostesses to the bartenders to the chefs, everyone knows how to create a beautiful experience for the guests! In the past I've tried the afrodisíaco dish and was blown away but I wanted to excite myself with a different dish so I chose the Mixto dish and wow! The flavors just burst in your mouth with how bright they are, the dish is set under Ceviche but this is so much more elevated than your typical view of ceviche dishes! My boyfriend ordered the Dragon Lake cocktail and absolutely loved it! The ingredients are so well incorporated you don't find yourself tasting a drink with overpowered liquor that drowns out the other ingredients! He's a bartender so he appreciates a well made drink! On his end he loved his plate although I didn't catch the name of it, it was beautifully plated and it showed through with the taste of each bite as well! This is a MUST visit if you're ever back in the SLO area.
