I write this update with great sadness, as I had previously proclaimed Bengali Sweet House as the best destination for ghar ka khana in the NYC area. But after a recent fire, it seems they've opened up under new management. Turns out the old manager and chef have moved to Hungry Restaurant across the street! Gone are the free mini dosas on the weekend buffet. The bhindi fry used to be my favorite here, and while it looks the same, it now lacks all of the old incredible spice and flavor. Chole was also watery and lacking. Palak paneer was still tasty and paneer had good texture. Even the hot butter rotis they bring around don't have the same soft texture they used to have. Food is not terrible overall, but its certainly no longer my favorite restaurant along the galli. On top of it they raised the price! I will be going to Hungry for Gujarati style brunch in the future.

Was exploring the area and stumbled on this sweets store. The people at the counter were very helpful in answering our questions and introducing us to desserts that weren't too sweet. There were cases full of trays of sweets and the counter tops were filled with other goodies packaged in plastic containers. Apparently there was a buffet area towards the back with food in trays out in the open. There was also maybe four or five tables with seats in the establishment. I'd be interested in coming back to try more of the sweets but maybe not the buffet.

I am a big fan of family run food joints. This is an amazing place and always my go to for the weekends. A 15 course fresh food that you can eat with joy and feel like home food. I am mostly happy to eat here. Plus the new Gujrati chef/maharaj has improved the food quality a lot. Try this out and you won't be disappointed. Expert tip - Try their tea and ask them if Ganga Aunty can make it. Her hand is magic. Also, they make very tea order fresh from the start. Love it.

Service is good, the guy behind the counter- Pawan is very helpful and sweet. Food is decent, nothing great. Prices are on the cheaper side. I ordered dhokla- 12$ per lb. a little hard and not much moist (3/5) And samosa chaat- 6$ (3/5) samosa are not crispy and not even warm. They packed it right from the buffet spread.

This is an informal Indian restaurant. It's a great dining haven for friends and family. The restaurant is very clean. I actually saw one of the staff ladies wipe the tables within minutes of customers leaving the restaurant. Food is delicious and affordable! It's $9 for the buffet. The buffet has about 10 Bengali and North Indian dishes. There are appetizers, entrees, and sweets. The food is absolutely delicious. So, it's easy to make a 3-, 4-, or even 5-course meal. Who says you can't make it classy for $9. :) The food must be authentic because I only saw Bengalis and Indians dining here. Just a few heads up: * The naan the waitress distributes is free, but the idli is not.

There are a whole lot sweet houses on newark avenue(Little India) as it is knows as. One day I was craving for the Indian sweets so decided to give this place a try. The spot right at the end of the Indian street, it has decent space to sit and eat too. Apart from sweets they carry and serve staple indian snack items. I took a box of sweets to go,went with different kinds of sweets. Had the Gulab Jamun, Rasgolla, Mango barfi, Cham Cham. Overall it was just okay, I liked Mango Barfi the most apart from that everything was on the dry side. My quest for an awesome Indian sweet shop is still on!

Their weekend and dinner buffet is $8! On the weekdays, it's $6 for lunch. Now don't let the interior intimate you...it doesn't look much on the inside but the food is pretty good. The quality of the food feels homecooked and is well-made. The buffet is in the back corner of the restaurant and all the food is vegetarian. The waiter was also very nice and would periodically ask us if we needed anything. They serve you fresh rotis and dosa while your'e eating. The dosa was so good - hot and crispy! I'll describe some things I had on my dish clockwise. Also, I don't know the specific name of everything so it's a little embarrassing for me to describe it. There's cauliflower, samosa balls, okra, curry, saag paneer, yellow sauce/curry that tasted buttery, yogurt dessert, flavored rice, roti, baati. You don't come here for the ambiance but for cheap and humble food that will fill you up! They also sell a variety of sweets. They have a takeout lunch box for $5.

Holding it or tasting it gives a substantial, high-quality feel. However, the consequence is that even the staff struggles to scoop it out with their spherical ice cream scoops, let alone the disposable plastic spoons provided to customers. Green Tea: The highest praise Chinese people can give for desserts--not sweet--and it truly tastes like green tea, not matcha. The refreshing bitterness was incredibly pure, even bordering on slightly bitter, which is extremely rare in the US. Vanilla Peanut Butter: Very milky, but extremely salty, like eating peanut butter spread on bread. The vanilla flavor was almost completely masked. Coconut & Cream: I've always trusted American coconut ice cream, but this time it was a bit of a disappointment. The cream completely overshadowed the coconut, so much so that it took me a long time to recall what flavor I actually ordered. Ube: One bite brought back childhood memories, exactly the same as the ube flavor Wuyang五羊 ice cream cone. It was so touching I didn't order this in the end since I want to try more flavors as possible. I don't know why, but ube flavor seems to be gradually fading in China... Blueberry Cheesecake: The initial taste was a rich, sweet cream, with a refreshing hint of blueberry tartness in the aftertaste. It's pretty good, but honestly, it's not particularly outstanding. Banana Peanut Butter Chunk: The staff recommended this signature dish, and it once again made me realize how subjective taste can be... It's on the sweeter and saltier side, with a very strong flavor, but more importantly, it has a noticeable artificial banana flavor.

There's so many yummy flavors - it's hard to choose! I ultimately went with the rocky road (my classic favorite) and the cheesecake with rainbow sprinkles (because why not!?) and enjoyed every bite! I think the rocky road could've used more marshmallows but that's my personal preference for my favorite childhood fave ice cream. Service was great and allow you to try a couple flavors if you're unsure which is great as not all ice cream spots makes the flavors the same! It's only street parking so get ready to search for that when you come to visit - but it's worth it! And read street signs so you don't get towed or ticketed.

So get anything fresh, like made to order cakes or things you see come out right when you're there. Otherwise you run the risk of getting old stuff, which sucks that they don't manage that at all. On a Sunday afternoon lines moved quickly and we were able to find seats. This is a cute cafe that offers plenty of savory items and lunches, plus drinks like matcha, cakes, pastries and cookies. There is also a bathroom! The women behind the counter were all nice and patient with my questions, they also kept the line moving and were quick. I had high hopes for the Alfajores as this is an Argentinian bakery but unfortunately the ones given to me were stale. The cookie was very hard. Also the Dulce de leche was too sweet and burnt tasting to me. I also got a chocolate covered one and the cookie in that was also hard and dry. The strawberry croissant was amazing. Never had anything like that before. Not too sweet and very flaky. It has a ribbon of red on the outside which gives it a unique look. I would love to come back and try savory items. I'll continue to stick with the cakes and croissants for desert and make sure it's fresh!
