Oh my: where to start. Well at least the exhaust fans were working today and the place was not full of smoke. The meal began with barely warm soup and I for one prefer my miso soup hot. Next came a small salad which was ok, but the star of the salad, that wonderful ginger dressing was missing in action. I did find a trace of it at the bottom of the bowl, but no matter how hard I tried could not distribute enough of it around the salad to save the day. Next came the fried rice again only OK, but way too salty. Geeezz why so much salt?! Then on to the main dishes. All the shrimp hit the cook top, but the chef did remove the tails and de-vain as was the practice on previous visits. It wouldn't have mattered anyway as the chef didn't have the necessary knife skills to do this at the table anyway. Heck that was a great part of the Benihana experience; now perhaps gone forever! The shrimp were cooked and plated and tasted alright (the only well cooked part of the meal.) Next came my Lobster. He took the tails out of the shell and tossed them into his hat... well at least he tried to. The lobster sat on the grill for way too long and turned into lobster flavored gummy bears. What a waste of good lobster. Next came the steak (Medium Rare), again cooked way to long with tons of garlic butter! Suffice it say, not so good, but I ate it... Sorry I did; I can still taste the garlic. Then came the Veggies, again no thought as to what cooks faster, no logic at all while preparing the meal. Again due to the obvious lack of training and experience of the chef. Finally after the entire meal was complete, the chef emptied a bowl of sliced mushrooms on the grill, heck the entire table had finished eating by then. Well there they were... and on to most of our empty plates. Then finally came the onion volcano! He managed to assemble it, added a truck load of flammable liquid, and presto the very impressive ball of fire! I have a couple of suggestions Benihana - Your chefs need more training in all aspects of food preparation - Where are the knife skills that Benihana chefs used to be known for? In this market silly jokes and small talk isn't enough. Sorry to say the once exotic Benihana's is now one big over priced disappointment. Unfortunately for this restaurant, it was compared to Wasabi in the Jax, FL TownCenter so it gets a 3 mainly because it does not have the white sauce and it's a bit pricey the waiter forgot our salad but gave us a discount. Other than that it was not bad. read more

Benihana is a fun place to eat because of the entertaining show put on by the chef as he or she slices, dices, and grills your meal right before your eyes. Diners are generally seated in groups of eight around the grill as the chef goes to work. The food is OK, but not the greatest, and actually the main point of going to Benihana is to WATCH the chef "perform". When I'm in the mood to just EAT Japanese food or a grilled steak, there are other places I would rather go to. In addition to the chef who does the cooking in front of you, there's also a waitress who takes care of your drinks, side dishes, tea, etc. Overall, the service was excellent and really friendly when we were there recently. One thing to be aware of is that your clothes will smell really greasy when you leave because you're seated right in front of where the cooking is being done. So, I leave my coat in the car to spare it from smelling greasy and I make sure that the clothes I'm wearing are easily washable. You should still expect greasy smell to stay inside your car though! My car still smelled "like a kitchen" the next day and I had to leave windows down for the day to air it out. If you keep these little details in mind, Benihana can be a very good experience if you've never been there before. read more

Holy crap! I forgot how expensive this place is! Food is good, and I get that you pay for "the show" at your table, but it's not worth my money. I used to say "We'll save this place for special occasions", but to be quite honest, there's so many amazing places out there, that we end up at other places for those moments. I will come back to bring the kids for the experience at some point, but I won't be coming because the food draws me in. They have such a history, and people know what to expect, so they won't be hurting any time soon, but it's just not the place it once was back in the 1980's. A little back story , I've been to Benihana's all over America 75+ times and I decided to take my friend out here to eat for his first time. We made reservations for 6 yet took 30 minutes to get seated then after we were seated another 15 minutes to get drinks. The miso soup and salad were lacking ingredients. The Chef messed up a request for the rice and then we didn't get that rice till after the rest the food was ordered. The rice and vegetables were more on the burnt and crisp side, the steak was ordered medium rare it came out medium, no pink at all. We couldn't tell if the chef was drunk or if it was his first day. I would rate Benihana about 3.5 stars at best. It's a little over rated at this point. We go for every birthday because we get sent those $30 gift certificates for birthdays each year. Our tab is never less than $50 after the fact going. Which is fine if the food was actually something special. I have learned over the years that it's not worth buying the better cuts of meat or lobster, but rather sticking with simple steak and chicken meals. Although, I have been ordering the seafood diablo (which is udon noodles, veggies, and seafood,) thus dish also includes the soup, salad, shrimp/veggies, and rice appetizers. Sometimes you get lucky with a great chef and sometimes not. Most times, the wait staff is a pain and inattentive. The last few times we went, we have had a lot of problems with waitstaff. The waitress we had a few weeks ago, swiped our card for our meal AND someone else's!! Not thrilled about that as you can imagine. The food the last 2-3 times has been awfully bland! this location in particular is absolutely poorly run. there needs to be better management running the front of the restaurant, they completely over book themselves almost every night which over works the wait staff and puts them in a bad mood so when you enter the restaurant you are not greeted in a very happy manner. My husband and I ordered some food to go and we were told it was going to take 20-30min. and it took over and hour to complete. Once we were handed the food some of our sushi rolls were smashed and falling apart and we had asked for them to be remade buse for the amount of money spent and time waited it just seemed fair; the amount of ATTITUDE we got back from the staff was appalling. Had lunch with my family today. It started out strained but our waiter Horacio was super nice and patient with us. He was able to break the tension with my group. Chris the bus man was funny and very attentive to our needs. The kitchen manager even came to our table and offered us an appetizer for the delay in our cook coming to the table. I hate here for the first time last night. We ate in the non show area. The dining area that is near the sushi bar had a weird feel to it. It looked/felt like a McDonald's. Aside from art on the walls, it was a real shitty area. As for the food, it was nothing to write home about. We both ordered hibachi dinners. If I could give a negative star I would. I will preface this by saying I have been a long time customer of Benihana for almost40 years. This was the worse meal ever. We arrived and there was a truck blocking the handicapped parking area so we had to wAlk around to an area my disabled husband could get up to even enter the building. We talked to the hostess and shE ran off without an explanation. When she came back she said she could seat us. When we were seated we noticed the other patrons had received their drinks. The waitress asked if we wanted anything from the bar. I ordered a mai tai and since she had taken everyone's order we ordered our entree and beef Gyoza as aaa apppetiser. 20 minutes later the server came back with our soup Luke warm at best. Still no drink. Asked what happened to my drink and our Gyoza. Blank stare ooops I guess I forgot do youu still want it? Yesss or I wouldn't have ordered it. Fast forward another 10 minutes everyone has their salad still no drink or our appetizer. Server finally makes it back with my drink and the Gyoza. The Gyoza is cold. Send it back I said and please bring me a hot fresh item. 10 minutes later no server the children (not ours) at the table are losing it because we have been waiting over a half hour since the salads. She finally shows up with second set of Gyoza still cold everyone at the table are wondering if we aree ever getting fed.. I talked to the manager explaining that 2 times the Gyoza were below 140 thus in the zone for food borne illness and I cannot get ill do to my cancer treatment. She decided instead of Listening to her customer she would talk over me instead. Went back to the table wAited another 10 minutes I looked at my husband and saidd I'm not waiting any longer let's leave. We get up wAit at the hostess stand for our check waiting another 10 minutes for the manager to talk to us. Again not listening to her customers she talked over me at which time I loudly explain to her that if she doesn't change he food storage issues sh is going to kill someone and it's not going to be me. She replied the Gyoza were frozen so I should be ok. She then said she's comping our meal. I have always LOVED Benihana!! I have dined at this particular Benihana more than any other simply because I live here, but have also dined at other Benihana's in other states. I have only had wonderful food and service at all the Benihana's,,, but...there is a problem at this Benihana and only this one as far as I have noticed...something in their filtration system is not working correctly. The last two times that my husband and myself have eaten here, our clothes had a terrible stench to them. They smelled like very dirty old French fry grease from a greasy spoon diner. My husbands wool coat had to be taken immediately to the dry cleaners, and everything else we were wearing was washed immediately. It was awful!!! Just really really stinky!! Hey! The food and service is great but we decided that we won't return to the particular Benihana, the stench on our clothing was terrible and we have never had this type of issue at any of the other Benihana's read more

Had not been to a Benihana in more than 20 years. I was surprised it was so busy....so therefore did not realize we'd need a reservation. The hostess, after telling us they were full till 9:30pm with a tone that implied we should have known, suggested we could go to the bar. Since we had driven some distance to eat there, we opted for the bar. The bartender, whose name I didn't catch ( but it was 2pm on Saturday February 11th, 2017) was busy but not overwhelmed. He proceeded to ask questions, then walk away before he even got a response. Long story short, my food which I ordered off the menu and was a 6 course meal and was appx $28, looked like it had been tossed out of a frozen dinner box onto a plate.....I had to ask for my fried rice and when he asked if I wanted dessert (which came with my meal) he was walking behind me and didn't even wait for a response. My friend ordered sushi as her entree and it arrived with my soup....I think it should have come with mine. Nevertheless the food was adequate, the bartender was telling a coworker right in front of me that (I'm paraphrasing here) "this place is going to be a mess when I leave". I actually wanted to tell him to leave right then. So it could've been worse and it certainly should have been better. I think being banished to the bar to pay the same price for shitty presentation and service, is evidently the punishment for having the gall to show up and not realize a reservation was needed and in yoga pants :) read more

Often I have Friday lunch with my parents. We usually eat at one of a handful of restaurants, OK, not a full handful. I have been trying to think of new places to go with them. Somewhere different, but somewhere everyone will be happy. Then Roman S, wrote a review of here (yes, his was for dinner, but idea!) Today was the day, they called, did I want to have lunch? Yes! I thought of somewhere new to try! Arrive on time and see my parents. They look unsure. I tell the hostess we want to sit in the room where they cook on the table. My mom looks around a bit. She thinks the room with the windows is brighter. I tell her they are already setting up the table... Oh look here comes the hostess. All that about 5 minutes after we arrive. We set down, My mother notices the cherry blossom picture which the lights shine through. another family joins us. Its their dads birthday. Soup comes, my mother loves it, my dad seemed to like it he ate it all. It was really good. Looking around there is one table ahead of us in service another filling. I try showing my mom how to use chop sticks. The Chef arrives and is great, He starts making the fried rice. As part of his routine he plays with an egg, Tosses it in the air and catches it on the side of his spatula. hard enough egg leaks slowly out so he can write on the tables grill but not so much that it breaks completely The fried rice is really good and very garlicky from all the garlic butter. The show continues and he makes the main dish. Everyone loves it and the dipping sauces. My mother talks about bringing her sister here. No surprise it was a hit. My dad was surprised how cheap it was. We averaged about $15 +tip for everything including pop to drink. That seems cheap with the chefs and all the staff. The restaurant is very nice as well. We will be back, soon, but we may sit in the brighter quieter sushi side next time. It is fun to watch the show every few years. The food itself is fresh and flavorful, but nothing compelling where your eyes are fluttering from mouth-gasms. Food is pretty decent, but not sure if it's worth its dollar. I guess because you're paying for the "show". I commend Benihana for their teppanyaki show and excellent service. We celebrated my sweet wonderful husband's 37th birthday here the other night. Yep, I married a younger man! Yes, this is another chain and yes, this seems to be the kind of place that the only reason to go is to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion. My nephew really enjoyed the "show" and service and food were both good. I was impressed at the offering of a "couples special" for $45 that included steak, chicken, veggies, soup, salad and rice. The husband and daughter also shared some kind of shrimp sushi roll and were very impressed at the quality and quantity. We probably won't return for another few years but it was a fun celebration and a great way to spend some quality family birthday time. read more

This place is really noisy, full of kids, and not romantic at all. So come here for birthdays and skip it for other occasions. Now, let's talk about the food. Food were decent. I had the Steak and Lobster tail and they were really good. Everything was cooked with butter, so it better be good! Our chef was fast, but not personal enough in my opinion. I like funny chefs, maybe next time when I will make a reservation, I should ask for a funny chef. :-). Oh and that's another thing, make a reservation if you are planning to go. I hate to say it but I have to echo what a lot of people have said. This place has gone way downhill over the years. We had a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday that I made weeks in advance and still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. The restaurant was so crowded and it seemed like reservations didn't matter and they would seat people either way. Once we finally got a table it was so smoky and reeked of food; it didn't seem like the fans/hoods were even on. After ordering, it was another 20+ minutes until our chef came. Bless her heart, she was very nice but exhibited no showmanship. The food was good but other than that we will not be back. Waitress was disinterested and we had to ask for water refills, etc. Disappointing to say the least. You should take better care of your customers and honor reservations. read more

Great place for your buck. We didn't come for Happy Hour but that menu looked like a good deal. We came very early for our 4:45 reservation so we sat at the bar. Benihana started my love affair with the Japanese Steakhouse or Hibachi Grill concept. This location specifically was a favorite of a stripper ex-girlfriend of mine, who thought it was the very epitome of fine cuisine. She also believed Hamburger Helper was a perfectly fine option for dinner every night of the week which is the major reason she's an ex. As such, there was a period of time when I was at Benihana every other week for roughly a year. We went here so often that I positively got sick of the place, despite being on first name basis with at least three of the chefs, the front door people and two waitresses. The show was always the same. The food was alway mediocre, over salted, and over buttered. Drinks were heavy on alcohol and sugar, low on flavor. In other words, it was the perfect place to impress a date who already had low expectations. If I had written this review then, it would be two stars easily and not just because of the company I was forced to keep. The break up with the stripper included a much needed break up with Benihana. Two years later, and getting tired of my regular haunts, I tried to take a new girl friend (this one a vegetarian, but not a stripper,) to Benihana. With her Vegetarianism lingering frightfully near Veganism, the experience was less then pleasant for both of us. The Vegetable option was plain boring and very limited. The steak was OK, but obviously a medium to low quality cut. Chicken was dry, chewy and tasteless. Fast forward roughly five years. I found myself craving the good ol' Japanese Steakhouse experience. My most recent visit to one had been six months and 800 miles away so I had a bit of a scratch to itch. Searching Yelp, it seemed that Benihana is still the only choice in town, so we steeled ourselves for a foray in. The Vegetarian Girl Friend upgraded to Vegetarian Wife after degrading all the through Vegan Girl Friend to Raw Foodie Girl Friend so there were low expectations, a bit of eye rolling and sighing of "if you want..... I really don't care." The decor is still the same, looking a bit worse for wear, but not bad considering this place has been here for the three decades I can remember. But someone at Corporate Headquarters pulled a sneaky switch and redid the menu. Or the local manager decided that if they wanted to compete in the Portland area that had to step up their game. And step up they have. The very first thing I noticed (after the new menu,) was the fact that they served Shochu now. As far as I know (and please message me to prove me wrong,) there is only one other place in Portland that serves Shochu. I was introduced to this alcoholic delight in another Japanese Steakhouse in the far outskirts of Chicago a few years ago and am constantly looking for more. The only thing I could ask is that they make some mixed drinks with the Shochu, while it's great to sip on the rocks, it makes an awesome drink base when substituted for Vodka. We order a selection of sushi - all of which turned out to have improved in quality also, and I went with the steak and chicken teppanyaki. She went with the Garden Delight - AKA, Steam Vegetables. That's right, not grilled, steamed. After going through the usual little show and verbal exchange that the cook engages in, we get dinner. From the very first bite, I knew this was going to be different. I can't tell you exactly what it was, but everything was more flavorful then I remembered. Meats were VERY tender, cooked perfectly. The chicken was not rubbery little pieces that got stuck in the throat. And the Garden Delight was a HUGE surprise for the Vegetarian Wife. Steaming the veggies on the grill is pretty cool, but the big surprise was the variety of veggies included. Far beyond the choices they had previously. And steamed just perfectly. This right alone, has added Benihana back into our regular rotation of restaurants. After all, if she's happy - and actually able to enjoy a meal, then I'm going to be happy... eventually. Over all we are pleasantly surprised. The last two visits are night and day, to the point that the Benihana I visited recently is not the same place we visited several years ago. read more

Went here for lunch yesterday. We drove in from Portland and unfortunately they couldn't get us at a table. They said we would have to wait until 4pm so we decided to sit at the bar. I wish we would have gotten the full service and been able to see our food cooked at the table but I guess I will have to go back. The bar was totally empty. They have one tv playing football. The bartender was super cute and friendly. She was very chatty talking with us about our day and the new year. I enjoyed the conversation. The lunch menu has some great combo options. I ordered shrimp and steak. The other option was chicken. It came with sauteed veggies and fried rice as well as a salad. I loved the salad. The dressing was ginger based and so refreshing! I wish I would have bought some to take home. The seafood and the steak had their own dipping sauces. I liked the one for the steak best. Rich creamy flavor. Not sure what was in it but it was good! The steak was cooked medium rare and was tender and full of flavor. The fried rice was so yummy. I sucked down a few Mai Tai's here and the bartender made them perfectly! Felt like I was in Hawaii :) I really enjoyed the food and the experience we had here. I will be back for the full show in the future! read more
