We came here on a rainy winter evening just before Christmas, and it was completely empty. Usually that makes me a little concerned, but in this case it actually felt even cozier. We were seated at a private table even though there were only 4 of us (plus a baby). I ordered the steak and I was very pleased with it. The chef put on a nice little show for us and my daughter loved it (although my baby was a little scared of the smoking onion volcano so he had to stop that part). Only two of us ordered the chicken fried rice instead of steamed rice, but he made so much extra that all four of us got to eat some. We also ordered some sushi for our daughter and she liked it. I feel like the amount of food was great. As someone with a big appetite, I ate the majority of the food but still had a tiny bit to take as leftovers. The parking situation is very limited due to the fact it's in the middle of a neighborhood/main road area. Moving inside the restaurant, you walk in and it's a friendly feeling as you're greeted right away and if you have reservations you will be sat right away! The filet was nice and tender, however, it was not seasoned well. The entire meal was not seasoned well. The calamari was chewy and fishy. Possibly undercooked. We went with our family for an anniversary dinner. 5 adults, 3 children. Our "Chef" was quite entertaining and the grandkids. Had fun watching him. We were there a couple of years ago and pretty much the same except for the prices. Quite a bit higher but it's not like we go weekly or monthly. Notable the chef we had was on point but the other table complained about their person for lack of entertainment, he just didn't offer the same energy. So your experience can vary based on the person you get as chef. We did a reservation but didn't seem like that was a must. Had some folk from out of town. Some newly 21 and an over 50 birthday. Was looking for a good hibachi spot to take my dad in Vancouver, but the ones here didn't have grew reviews. So we crossed the water and headed into Portland. We went on a wednesday and although we made reservations, the restaurant wasn't crowded. Parking Lot is available so no worries about looking for parking. The spot was nice, with good music. My dad enjoyed the warm saki and I just had a regular drink of Jose Cuervo. The calamari appetizer was great. Perfectly cooked. I had steak and scallops and this was the first time at a hibachi spot that cooked my steak to a proper medium. Usually hibachi sauces are too strong for me but both their ginger and mustard sauces were excellent. They were out of the yum yum (white) sauce. Japanese steakhouses are a guilty pleasure for both my wife and myself; actually, Japanese restaurants in general would be more accurate. Tokio Table is only a handful of blocks from our old apartment, so we frequented it on several occasions. If you are familiar with the "Benihana experiece", or have patronized any other similar establishment, you know what to expect: the oil and onion "volcano" of fire, tossing an egg into the chef's hat, an amalgam of meats, seafood, vegetables and fungus happily grilling and sizzling away over a vast iron hibachi, encircled by a ten-person horseshoe of impatient, drooling carnivores. Tokio Table checks all the boxes. Pro tip: Order the wagyu beef, if it is available. Reality check: It won't be. Sorry. Sake, both hot and cold, is available in several iterations. Some of the sake-sporting cocktails are a knockout, the heavy hitters being the Sake Mojito and Tokio Mule; the Mountain Yuzu sake is light and fruity, like most yuzu drinks, if you're not into the stiffer selections. My only complaint against Tokio House is the aesthetics of the building itself: both interior and exterior feel a bit Spartan. The dining area is less Kanagawa and more Kafeteria (intentional sic), while the chocolate-hued exterior facade proudly wears its 1970s-era design like a pair of well-worn bell-bottomed jeans. A little bamboo and shoji would do wonders to knock a few centuries off its oddly post-modern appearance, and place it squarely back into the Bakumatsu era, where it belongs. read more

Best Japanese steakhouse I've EVER been to! Better than Benihana by a long shot. Our cook Pon was hilarious and engaged with us the entire time. His tricks and way he cooked our food was incredible he had such a special touch. He even cooked the fat of some of our parties' NY steaks separate with garlic butter and made it extra crisp... so fire!
