I hope people coming here read this review before deciding to commit to a reservation. We were seated an hour and a half after our reservation time and sat at least another 45 min before any food appeared. Apparently this happens almost every weekend according to the staff. I had to clear my own bowls , ask for forks , refills etc. my child threw a crayon onto the griddle and it melted and no one seemed concerned. Had the staff let us know when we arrived that we would have to wait AN HOUR AND A HALF before we were seated we would have chosen to get a different meal elsewhere but they kept say just 20 more minutes. If you're planning on going here and there's a lot of people in the lobby I'd recommend leaving. Once we had our food almost 2.5 hrs after our Rez time it was delicious and Jorge was a great chef. Be prepared to sit here for multiple hours waiting for service. My partner and I visited for a birthday dinner since they sent me a $50 certificate but absolutely do not plan on ever paying full price for a meal, at this location at least. We decided late this afternoon to grab dinner here, so we checked their availability online beforehand to make sure they would have room for us last minute. Reservations were completely open and they had spots every 15 minutes for the entire day. When we got there around 7:30pm they told us it would be a 1 hour 45 min wait. We almost accepted defeat but thought it was strange that the wait would be so long when we had checked not much earlier and it was completely open, so we looked online again. Alas, they had a reservation open for 7:45pm, along with a few later times throughout the night. We booked that, went back in, and were sat around 7:55pm. We figured they just don't like to take walk-ins here. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours for our chef and didn't leave until about 10:30pm. Our chef, Ed?, did a fantastic job and the food was delicious, but I will say the serving sizes were pretty terrible considering the price. You would think you would get more than 3 (THREE) total shrimp in a $50 "six" course meal. While everyone that helped us was very friendly and helpful, the service was so unbelievably slow and pretty much ruined the entire experience. We wouldn't visit again. read more

First, I just want to say that this place should be a 4-5 stars review type of place, and it has the potential to be. I've got to give it a 2.5-3 stars though. So, here's the "crap sandwich" review. We've been here, specifically this Carlsbad location, a few times in the last few months. The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is great. The hosts are friendly. Everything looks and smells great. We came here a couple of days before Christmas and we had reservations. We knew that it would be a full house and to expect some delays, even with a reservation for the teppanyaki grill. We waited for at least 30 minutes to be seated. Then we waited another 30 minutes. Eventually, we got drinks. Eventually, the show got started. We were one of the lucky groups who only waited around 60-90 minutes past the reservation to get served. Lots of other people got fed up and left. The food and show was great though. The chef was awesome and friendly. Can't remember his name, but great job. I figured this was just one of those nights. Busy night, close to Christmas, understaffed and overbooked. We came back another time to enjoy the lounge area and try the happy hour. 3pm, weekday, only a few tables being served, should be better this time. Nope. We were sat promptly, but waited forever to just get a drink order in. Once we got our drinks, we got our food order in and waited....and waited....and finally, one plate came out. Then another. It took forever to get the food out. I don't know if the kitchen was understaffed this time, or our server, while friendly, couldn't handle 3 tables. Today, we went back again. Maybe the other two times were flukes. We got there at 330pm and asked to be seated in the lounge. We were told that there's a 45 minute wait. The restaurant was relatively empty. Only one family at a teppanyaki grill, 3 tables in the lounge were occupied, and 2 empty tables that needed to be bussed. After we got a table and ordered, our food was out at 515pm. Almost 2 hours to get food. Our server was great. The food was good. It's the loooooooong wait times though. I worked in restaurants part time when I was young. I have a good understanding of how everything is supposed to run. The problem at this restaurant is how it's run. Service is painfully slow, the restaurant is somehow shorthanded, and guests are sitting there, just wondering what's going on. The manager is always walking around like he's doing something, but seemingly doing nothing. If this wasn't Benihana, or if it wasn't located near lots of locals and situated between a couple of hotels, it wouldn't make it. If it weren't a RESY restaurant, it wouldn't get those customers too. I'm not saying they I won't ever go back to this spot, but I would do it differently next time. I'd make sure to have a snack and a drink with me so I don't starve while waiting. If I'm meeting up with people, I'll show up an hour late so that by the time I get there, I should only have to wait another 30 minutes. But, I'll be ok because I'll have my drink and snacks with me while I wait. Overall, the food is still good, the staff is friendly, the lounge and bar is decent, and if you're going for the show and the ambience, it doesn't disappoint. If you can endure the long waits, and are in no hurry at all, go for it. If you need to use some RESY credit on your Amex before the quarter ends, do it. If you go and experience no wait times and everything was on point, count yourself lucky. I was so excited to share the magic of Benihana with our kids and unfortunately it was everything but that. We had reservations and didn't get seated until 50 min after. Then more waiting after placing the drink/app order in. Followed by even more waiting to get the chef to do the food show (spoiler alert no more food throwing), and finally left 3 and a half hours later! Not sure if it's new corporate mandates following being sold but the OG Benihana spirit AND efficiency has exited. So many delays, lack of operational effectiveness, disgruntled customers, and the poor staff doing their best to keep it together. At the end of the night my 5 year old said to me "mom we are never going back there again, like ever. That was way too long." read more

We've been to many locations for Benihanas and this is by far the best. The location in Mission Valley is really small and very uncomfortable because you're right on top of the next table or sitting back to back to them. This location is huge and even when it's a packed house, you don't feel claustrophobic like the other locations. We've been here about 5 times in the last year and each time is amazing. This time we got the fishbowl margaritas which were amazing and a pretty solid deal even though they're $60 because it's at least 5 regular drinks worth. The show is great and these chef's work their butts off at the grill. We love all the courses and it's great when we bring our daughter because she only likes ranch dressing on her salads and they have a delicious ginger dressing that's amazing. It is a little more expensive than your standard japanese restaurant but you don't get dinner and a show at those places. Just servers that drop off your food and then bail. Not here though. Wish I would have read the reviews first before going with the family. I've been going here since a kid, and we wanted to introduce our nieces to Benihana's. Unfortunately, this experience has kind of ruined it for me and the family. We got seated and proceeded to wait 90 minutes for the chef to come over for food. A waiter disappeared most of the time. There were other people that walked out. I wanted to walk out, but being with the family, I couldn't. The only saving grace was Eddie, our chef. When he did finally make it to the table, he did apologize and gave a pretty good show. They were out of rice, so we had our fried rice at the end instead of the beginning. He was very diligent about making sure the food was right and the food was still good. The service and the wait time to get the chef are usually 90 minutes, not two and a half hours, and waiting an hour just to get soup. It's really sad what happened, and other reviews at this location have testified that the management is poor. read more

Dinner at Benihana has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I was sadly disappointed with my experience. I visited the Carlsbad location 2 twice in one week. The first time was on a Saturday afternoon for lunch with my wife. We had reservations but there was no wait at the time we arrived at 12 noon. The place was empty. We were seated with another small group. When you go to Benihana, you go for the experience. Our chef was not very entertaining. He was a nice guy, but he lacked any kind of performance or presentation. On top of that, the grill that he was using was not working correctly. He said that it would get too hot and he didn't understand why that station was not closed. At one point the manager came over and told him that there was too much smoke, and he advised her of the issue with the grill. Later that week we took our kids on a with us on a weekday to give it a second try. We thought maybe it would be better. Our chef was a little more entertaining but the grill area that we had, had a broken light that kept blinking on and off the entire night and the chef complained that it was making him dizzy. The food was just OK. Nothing to really rave about. My other issue was with the "Friends with benefits" club that they had. us sign up for. On our first visit, we signed up and they never gave us any credit or points. I tried going online the next day to see if I could get help to fix it, and there was no online support. When we came the 2nd time, they did give us our points but said there was nothing they could do about the first time. We also were told that just for signing up you would get a free appetizer. We tried to use it on the 2nd visit and was told there was no reward on our account. We ended up just paying for the appetizers. Overall, maybe my expectations were too high. For the $400 we spent over the 2 visits, it wasn't worth it to me. You can get much better food and much better service from other places. The Hibachi that I had on a cruise ship recently was better than my Benihana experience. Probably won't be back. read more

Our reservation was at 6:00 PM We didn't see the chef until 1 hour and 45 minutes after our reservation time- literally right after we said we had to leave. As you can imagine, kids were extremely exhausted and we had to cancel the whole thing. We still had to pay for the alcohol $98 (for 2 sake and 3 bears). And still had to figure out what to have for dinner super fast so the kids can go to bed in a decent time. The whole night turned into a complete disaster versus a celebration. Don't bother. We have come here for the full experience and had a good time in the past. We decided to give their restaurant style a try (just normal tables, no grill) and it was pathetic to say the least. I order the wagyu fried rice ($23) and got the tiniest bowl with 8.5 pieces of steak on top. I never send things back or complain but I had to say something because there's no way I'm paying for that. I've had larger sides of rice at KKBQ than this. We got the yakisoba with steak and there was barely any meat. The food was below subpar and we ended up going and getting food from Costco to make up for lack of it here. The server apologized and offered up free appetizers, however once the chef got there.... His lack luster and frankly nervous energy distracted me from anything else. He undercooked several pieces of food, which made me question eating my meal. My husband ordered tofu, and veggie fried rice. The chef didn't make the rice, so my husband waited for the rice and his food got cold waiting for the rice. We ended up asking to take the tofu back, and server comp'd his entree and the appetizers plus a discount for the wait. What was the most frustrating was that the food would have come up to almost $200!!!! For a dining experience that was supposed to be amazing. And it wasn't. We've spent far less at similar restaurants and gotten top notch services and food quality. I really think the chef was brand new, he appeared to have no cooking or entertaining skills. He did his best, but overall I am so disappointed for the experience and will never be back. Other similar style restaurants are wayyyy better and I will be telling everyone that. Management - who has been entirely absent for 2 hours suddenly lets us know we have service coming right up. We decide to leave anyways as the experience was awful. Worst overall experience or my guest & I! Reservation made for: 5/22/26, 6pm, Seated at: 6:10, Drinks ordered at: 6:25pm, Food ordered at: 6:43pm, Soup & Salad arrived: 7:13pm, Chef arrived: 8:43, over two hours after being seated. After placing our orders, no drink refills were offered & we had to chase down the server to request them. Our drink refills were acknowledged by the server, yet nothing received, including H2O refills. Server prompted for a bar drink & even though he acknowledged my drink request, no drink arrived until asked him again. Another Manager brought the drink, then another drink showed up via a bar runner. The Manager arrived after our 2nd request for assistance (approx. 7:45). He had a hard time hearing; we had to repeat multiple times. Even then, he did not seem to understand that the table in the corner of the room was seated after us & were already enjoying their main meal & show. The Manager said he would figure out what was going on with our order. He returned & stated that the reason that the other table was eating before us was that their meal was entered @ 6:43 & our order was entered @ 6:46. Then he said that our chef had to finish another table but would then be with us. He did not fully grasp the main issue: another table was seated after us, was eating their meal, & we still did not even have a chef. Meanwhile, 2 Guests of the other party sharing our table left @ 8:40 due to extreme hunger. Chef arrived@ 8:43, 2.5 hours after being seated. The menu was reviewed, however, hearing f was complicated by the noise level. The noise was elevated as the front & side doors were propped open. Chef proved to be no better than the server & Manager. Chef was told during the delivery of cooked onions that I had requested extra zucchini instead of cooked onions. The chef acknowledged this and then delivered onions to my plate anyway with no zucchini. During the delivery of the cooked mushrooms, which we both had requested, the chef gave my guest her mushrooms, nothing for me. When my guest received her steak, which was ordered medium rare, it was cooked well done. When she notified the chef, he countered with this was what was printed on the ticket, then started to clean the grill, offering nothing in return. Consequently, my guest did not eat her steak. When the check arrived, we received a 20% discount which did not cover either of our meals. To date, no response to my review via Open Table, so I am posting it as a public review of the dinner. read more

I haven't been here in 10 years and came back for a celebration. One of the reasons we chose this place was because Trisha Paytas recently promoted it. We were seated at 6:15 PM and quickly noticed the A/C wasn't working. We only found out because I checked myself, and it wasn't until we brought it up to the manager that we were given a fan. The overall experience was extremely disappointing. We waited 2.5 hours for the chef to come to our table. During that time, service was almost nonexistent. We didn't receive soup and salad until over an hour later, and only after asking a random server because our own server was never around. No one informed us they were understaffed until we kept asking about the delay. About 1.5 hours in, the manager finally explained they only had two chefs working. Other tables told us they had been waiting up to 3 hours for food as well. I don't understand why the restaurant continued seating the entire place knowing they were severely understaffed. We constantly had to ask for drinks and refills, all while sitting in a restaurant that was unbearably hot. The only person truly helping was the manager, who seemed to be doing everyone's job. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this place. After reading other reviews, it seems like this is a repeated issue and not just an off night. Wait time 1to 2 hours. Understaffed and call outs left only several chefs for full restaurant. After no chef for 2 hours, party left and went to In N' Out Burgers. Bar service was beyond slow and party goers made own drinks. The staff are threatening to quit because of enduring so many complaints and having to face unhappy customers. We had an absolutely fantastic time at Benihana in Carlsbad. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, lively, and welcoming. Our server, Kristen, was outstanding--attentive, friendly, and so knowledgeable. She made sure we had everything we needed and kept the experience fun and seamless from start to finish. A special shout-out to Cheryl, the manager, who came by to check on us personally. Her professionalism and genuine care for guests really stood out and made the evening feel even more special. Of course, the food was incredible--fresh ingredients, great flavors, and a hibachi chef who put on a show that had everyone laughing and engaged. We went here to celebrate my niece's 8th birthday. They were able to accommodate a party of 10 with a reservation. This place is clean and is located in a nice area. The workers were friendly and did a good job being attentive. The chef we had was very friendly and personable. He did an excellent job interacting with us, entertaining us, and cooking for us. He had some tricks that were new too! This is a good place to go for special occasions with friends and/or family. We had a good time and ate well. This was my first time at Benihana, and I came here with some former coworkers for a reunion. The menu is intimidating because it felt kind of like Cheesecake Factory, so I was a little overwhelmed with not knowing what to order. The interior is a lot prettier than the exterior (especially the view of the courtyard), due to the fact that it's sandwiched between hotels. It was practically empty for an 11:30 AM reservation, so it's the perfect time if you and your party want some quiet and privacy. There happened to be a celebration from the only other table there at the time, so it was cool to see that they do care about special moments. Our waiter was Preston, and our chef was David. It was entertaining because David had a sense of humor, as expected. The customer service side was decent, and as for the taste, it was not too shabby. I was a little worried since some of the photos other reviewers left didn't look so appetizing. The deep-fried roll turned out extremely sweet, but it could be because I was breaking a fast. I'm just glad they had options for rolls without imitation crabmeat. I also tried some of the veggie fried rice, grilled chicken, and steak. The beef and mushrooms were probably the highlight. The one worrisome part was that some of the floor was extremely slippery (I'm guessing from the oil), so definitely watch your step if you're here for the Teppanyaki and not wearing anti-slip shoes. We were seated promptly, which was a pleasant start to the evening. Unfortunately, the service fell short in several significant ways. Our server appeared inattentive when taking orders, resulting in multiple errors. My wife requested egg fried rice with no vegetables but received chicken fried rice without egg. A similar mix-up affected someone from the other party at our table. I ordered teriyaki beef, but it arrived without any teriyaki sauce; when I pointed this out, the chef showed me the order ticket, which indeed omitted the teriyaki entirely. Most concerning, one member of the other party never received her entrée at all, it was simply forgotten. The most uncomfortable moment came at payment. The server handed over the card machine, explicitly asked for a tip, and then stood watching while I completed the transaction. This approach felt overly pressured and awkward, particularly given the subpar service. I strongly suggest you reconsider this practice to avoid making customers feel coerced or observed. While the food itself was enjoyable when it arrived correctly, the overall experience, combined with the pricing, does not justify a return visit. We're unlikely to come back. read more

Never again!! CBAD Benihana just set a new record -- for being the worst experience I've ever had at any Benihana! Everything that once made this place special -- the service, food quality, prep, and entertainment -- has completely fallen apart. 1. Service: Slooooow. I could've watched paint dry faster. 2. Food Quality: What quality? They skimp on vegetables, and the meat looked like it came from the bargain bin -- frozen, thawed, and tossed on the grill. 3. Food Prep: Used to be a decent, semi-healthy option, but now it's a cholesterol bomb. A gallon of butter and a barrel of salt on everything. My arteries are still recovering! 4.
