Once the whole party was seated & our order was taken, we received our delicious ginger salad and miso soup quickly. When our chef arrived he was ready to put on a show! He was so fun, engaging and very genuine. All of the food was amazing. I got the filet mignon steak w/ fried rice and my husband gets the sumo steak. The filet mignon is definitely worth it but if you prefer more meat, the sumo steak is the way to go. The drinks are affordable and compared to other teppanyaki places, the food is affordable and absolutely worth it. 3.5/5 Stars - Nice Experience, But Some Service and Timing Issues We visited Tabi-Ji Teppanyaki for my husband's birthday and had an overall decent experience, though there were a few things that would make us think twice before returning. We chose the dining room seating rather than the teppanyaki tables. The staff did offer us the teppanyaki experience, but since we don't eat red meat or chicken from certain places and weren't sure how the food preparation process worked with mixed ingredients, we opted for a regular table instead. One downside was the seating arrangement. We were seated away from most of the other guests, and it often felt like the staff forgot we were there. Our original host/server was attentive and friendly, but once they were busy with other tasks, it became difficult to get assistance. It was also not busy for a Tuesday evening. We found ourselves waiting for long periods or having to wave someone down, which wasn't ideal, especially for a birthday dinner. As for the food: * Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll (4/5): Fresh, good quality fish, and a generous portion. A solid sushi roll. * Garlic Edamame (4/5): Flavorful and exactly what you'd expect from a good appetizer. * Lobster Duo with Miso Soup, Salad, and Fried Rice (3/5): Unfortunately, the lobster was quite chewy and seemed overcooked. The miso soup and fried rice were both enjoyable and helped make up for it. * Unagi Donburi (4/5): My husband's meal came with white rice, miso soup, salad, and fried rice. It was his first time trying eel, and he really enjoyed the soft texture and flavor. He said he'd definitely order it again. Our biggest disappointment was the timing of the food. The Unagi Donburi arrived significantly later than everything else. By the time it came out, we had already eaten most of the appetizers and other dishes and were pretty full. It's unfortunate because it seemed like a dish that would have been much better enjoyed fresh, but we ended up taking most of it home. This is a review only for the sushi bar We ordered the - mango Cali roll - Philadelphia roll - chirashi sushi (comes with salad and miso soup) - nigiri (tuna, salmon belly, yellow tail belly, scallops) As the food was coming out, we didn't realize how much it was. The sushi chef let us hold off on our last roll (which we ended up not getting) because we got full. Both rolls tasted standard but bigger than usual. Good but I wouldnt get again Chirashi sushi had a nice mix of different fish cuts. But the star of the show was the nigiri pieces. I would not get anything else except MORE nigiri pieces. Thank goodness I needed to get some dry cleaning done, otherwise I wouldn't have seen this gem of a place right next door. I got seated at the sushi bar and we were given little appetizers to start off. I have no idea how to describe it but you'll just have to look at my photos. I got the Tuna and Salmon sashimi as well as the Sandy Special. The sashimi did their job, but the Sandy Special was quite the surprise. "It's a Poke Bowl on steroids!" as described by my wife. Honestly a very apt description. One of the staff members- either one of the owners or the head chef- even made time to walk around and talk to us, which was honestly really cool. Definitely our favorite teppanyaki spot to visit when we are in OC! we always sit at the teppanyaki grill and each time we've gone the food has been so good! Our chefs have always been the best and entertaining and definitely know what they're doing! The filet mignon, fried rice and their salad with the miso dressing is my favorite. They have table seating for ordering a la carte, but it might take longer to be seated if you want to have a hibachi experience. The decor is nice, and the tables and chairs are also clean. Perfect spot for large families or a date night. They do take walk-ups, but reservations are highly recommended. Service: Shout out to our chef Jose and server Patricia. It was very tender and delicious. The chicken and shrimp tasted as expected. Both were cooked well. My cousins also enjoyed their lemon garlic chicken. Let me first start by saying our chef was extremely nice and always tried to make things fun while we're there. Now, we made reservations and were seating promptly 10/10. 2 random people were seated with us which was fine of course . It was our first time here, but we quickly noticed that those two other guests were regulars. How you may ask? Well the server basically talked to them the entire night and ignored us. My friend said I don't eat out of a small plate. The server answers "I'm just asking you a question" with an attitude. This server was very disrespectful of customer. We had made reservations for 8:30 but surprised we weren't able to get a table at 7:30. Based on the restaurant's positive reviews, we decided to give it a try--and it didn't disappoint. My colleague and I chose the hibachi grill experience and were entertained by our chef who prepared our meals to perfection. Our meals started with salads served with ginger and sweet dressings on the side, both of which were delicious. The chicken broth soup was equally flavorful. Kabi-Ji was such a great time. We went for my wife's 28th birthday and had a group of 12, so seating did take a bit, but honestly it was expected with a party that size. Getting filet mignon and scallops hibachi style with fried rice, salad, and soup for around 34 dollars? That is hard to beat, especially for the quality. The fried rice was also really solid. Not too heavy on soy sauce or butter, which I liked a lot, and the portion was just right. The sauces they give you on the side always hit. I would definitely hang out with these two if I get a chance. I always order nigiri and not much of a roll person so my review will be mainly that type of sushi. You know how you normally dip the sushi in soy sauce well not here folks. The rice is perfectly seasoned and has enough of a salt profile to go perfectly with the seafood item of your choice, it reminds me of onigiri rice. They have the perfect amount of wasabi, grated ginger or whatever compliments your fish. You can just pop one in your mouth and you know it will be the perfect bite. The wife gets their sukiyaki combo and I just love the fried rice they have because it's the same rice as the tepanyaki, the amount of butter on it is so damn good. The amount of food you get for the combo is a ton and well worth it. Also, by far our favorite sukiyaki is from here. As part of the combo meal you get your choice of soup and a salad. I can't decide if I like the miso soup or their clear broth better. Someone will have to comment here and tell me what you think or prefer? I've always been a Benihana guy for the great food and show, but it became very expensive and redundant. This place is a "Mom & Pop version of Benihana with charm at an affordable price". The selection of sake are incredible and I love trying different drinks at the waiters recommendations. Alas, the waiters are very accommodating and friendly. The performances have all been different and unique by the Chefs. They don't do the same old tricks as other Hibachi restaurants. The kids love the originality. Food: Amazing! We usually upgrade to filet mignon for steak and it's very tender and generous portions. Hibachi chicken is tender, not chewy, and great seasoning. Shrimp is standard. The sauces are great and pair well with chicken, meat, or seafood. Portion size is always very generous and we always have leftovers. My son always orders the California Roll. He hasn't upgraded to "real sushi", but says it's better than most places. Edamame is hot and the right amount of salt. Drinks: Great selection of Sake and draft beer. Cocktail selection is average, but I prefer sake or beer when eating at these establishments. Price: as mentioned earlier, you'll pay approx 20% less than Benihana. You'll receive slightly larger portions as well. The kids meals are a great deal if you have little ones. Fried rice is an upgrade, but the flavor and taste are incredible. A family of 5 (3 kids) with lemonade, sake, and upgraded fried rice and filet mignon will cost you $150-$200. Easily $200-$250 at other restaurants. But I'd rather support local businesses. Appointments: the website is the best place to set up an appointment. Make sure to go online and confirm the day before and also confirm when they send you an email. Hours of operation are very limited to evening times and this place is crowded on weekends. If you want an intimate time, please visit during the week (Monday to Thursday). For some reason the steak is cooked to perfection every time. I goto 5 star steak houses that can barely ever get a steak medium rare, but tabi-ji..? Perfection. I don't always sit at the teppan grill but I do always order the same thing and it comes out right even when sitting at a table. This dish comes with your choice of miso soup or clear broth and mushrooms. I always choose the clear broth because I usually only eat miso soup while eating sushi at a sushi bar. It also comes with small salad with your choice of dressing. As for sushi here ? I've only tried the crunchy roll and saba sushi. The saba sushi was good but the crunchy roll lacked crunch and it wasn't anything special. The service is great. There is a good amount of staff to always check on the tables for anything from extra napkins to refill of drinks etc. All in all it's one of my favorite spots and if you're looking for a good teppan spot give this place a try, it won't disappoint . read more

Rating: 3.5 stars but I rounded down to 3. I haven't been here in years and we were looking to have something different so we decided to revisit Tabi-Ji. We had a 6:00pm reservation on a weeknight and were seated at the Teppanyaki table immediately. One other couple arrived ten minutes later and for some reason things didn't really get started until almost 6:25pm. The salad with ginger dressing and miso soup were good. I saw on the wine list that they had an Eberle red wine which is not for sale in regular retail channels so I ordered a glass. Unfortunately it was somewhere between starting to go bad and bad so I sent it back and ordered a glass of cabernet which was good. My girlfriend was looking at the sushi list and was curious about the fatty tuna. I said Toro was melt in your mouth delicious and ordered some for her to try. It was "market price" at $7.50 per piece which seemed a little high but we enjoyed a few pieces anyway. However, the wasabi in the sauce on top was a little too strong and overpowered the Toro. The fried rice with egg and garlic butter was great and our chef did the traditional "spinning egg toss and hat catch" and made the traditional beating rice heart display. While preparing the veggies, our chef also did the traditional onion volcano. I had the Land Meets Ocean which is New York steak and a lobster tail and my girlfriend had the twin lobster tails. They give you the standard ginger and mustard sauces and I always like to also get srircha for the steak. The entrees and shrimp appetizer were good but the vegetable portion seemed kind of small. For my friend's birthday, he wanted to get teppanyaki so I looked up a few options on Yelp and came across Tabi-Ji. Reservations for 2 were easy to attain, but I did hear from larger groups that they had issues securing a spot for teppanyaki since there is limited seating for this meal experience. Just to manage expectations, we came at 5pm right at opening but the cooking was not complete until about 6:15pm, so there was definitely some patience required. What I disliked, where the business can use improvement in... is a cleanliness issue. They open at 5pm so we were the first group of the evening. There was dirty napkins and the chopstick wrapper underneath our table ledge. At opening, there is no reason for the restaurant to be such a mess already. I also find their sauce trays and plates aged with cracks and in need of a replacement. On a more positive note, the chef did fun teppanyaki tricks I have not seen at other businesses. It was very entertaining and engaging for the children who dined at our table. They also get the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday to those kids. No celebrations or acknowledgements for the adults apparently. My friend had the Tabi-Ji Ichiban ($30) which comes with a New York Steak and Chicken Breast. I had a Surf and Turf (32) which comes with New York Steak and hibachi shrimp. These teppan meals are served with a soup, salad, veggies, and a steamed rice. We both opted for the Fried Rice upgrade ($3.95). Per my observation, those who ordered seafood like lobster, squid or shrimp had their proteins complete first. Then the steaks. Lastly the chicken. I enjoyed the soup. The salad was awful. Overall the food was salty for my taste but the portion was a large portion and I had enough for a subsequent meal. I would be open to coming back for my friend's birthday whenever they want it. Definitely better and more affordable than Benihana but still major room for improvement. read more

They use a lot of butter that makes everything taste amazing. As for the show, it can vary greatly depending on the chef (I hear chef Richard is the best and most fun, but we got someone else who shall remain nameless).
