Been to Benji's a number of times over the years. It's one of those iconic places you have to visit when you're in Milwaukee. It's not the best food I've ever had, but where else can you go to get a matzah ball like this? Food: The food is good, but I wouldn't call it spectacular. I usually order the chicken soup with matzah balls. For me, the soup itself has always been a bit blah, more like a very thin chicken broth. The matzah ball is really the star of the show. I also noticed what other people were eating, and the corned beef sandwich and potato pancakes looked very good. Most people cleaned their plates, which is always a good sign. Service: Service has always been very good. Quick and efficient is the name of the game here. I got a spot at the counter, seated between two other people. Menus, ordering, and the check all happened without much waiting. The servers are friendly, but always on the move. There's not much idle chatter. Atmosphere: The place feels worn, but clean. The large windows bring in lots of natural light. There is booth, table, and counter seating. They fit a lot of people into the space, but it doesn't feel overcrowded. Nobody was friendly here, but I'm still giving it 4 stars cause the food was good. I got the Hear o Israel, it wasn't quite what I saw on the food network but still very good. I've had this place on my radar for awhile, I just felt like they didn't want me there, most employees don't talk to you or look at you unless you directly address them. I wanted to go here my whole life and I finally got here! Looking at pictures from past patrons it didn't quite match the amount of meat in their sandwiches. It was like going back in time to a diner, but everyone was very serious and not sure what the vibe is supposed to be. I opted for the not Italian beef, which was pretty good but very thin on a baguette bun, my dining companion had me try her Benji sandwich and that was much more flavorful. 2nd visit. Reuben eggs benedict. Eggs poached perfectly, corned beef tasty and lean. Main issue at this location is food is never hot enough. Cheese not melted, kraut and beef only lukewarm. The hollandaise is made specially for this sandwich and has a hint of thousand island in it which is a nice touch, but it is very sparing. Definitely needs more. read more

Having worked near Benji's for several years now I am happy to say that I've found a new go-to for sandwiches or similar fare. I am a big reuben fan, and having tried many of the options in the Milwaukee area I have to say I think Benji's reuben is the new winner. I was shocked with how loaded this baby was with (hand carved) corned beef, even with it being on the higher side of the price range. The sandwich was paired with a nice amount of Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing, buttered and then grilled just as it should be. I was happy to also see that a pickle and chips were included. A hefty lunch for sure! If you are in the area, drive straight past the neighboring subway or other chain options and come right to this local spot. You'll be happy you did. read more

Had a taste for a pastrami sandwich. Drove up to Benji's with my wife. Huge disappointment. The meat was very, very tough and looked as though it came from a grocery store package. Pastrami and corned beef are supposed to be cut across the grain to make it more tender. Mine was cut with the grain and was like eating rope. The meat was also served at room temperature which didn't help for tenderness. The quantity was nothing like their picture but in this case that was good. Their rye bread was tremendous. The server (she's been there for years) was also good. My wife had pea soup which she felt was "OK." I should have had hoppel poppel. read more

We come here often, and while I have reviewed this place before, I thought I would give an update. Benji's is still the best. This throwback, Brooklyn like diner is nothing fancy. Great food, great vibe and an awesomely old diner decor. We came here on Mother's Day and were seating pretty quick. I have the matzo ball soup and then the hot Italian beef. My wife had a veggie omelet with some sausage and home fries. One of my kids had a burger and the other French toast. All was delish! 2 stars for nostalgia and matzo ball soup. But shouldn't a deli offer real pastrami? This place is supposed to be the best deli in MKE (since Jake's is taking a standing eight count, if not actually knocked out), yet they don't offer legit pastrami. And pastrami is the foundation of a real deli. But Benji offers thin yet weirdly hard to chew slices of past-its-sell-by-date pastrami. No flavor, bad texture, not fresh, expensive. The rye and brown mustard are the highlights of the sandwich. You don't have to be Katz's or Canter's, but cmon. Waterfront Deli serves much better pastrami, and their pastrami is precooked/prepackaged/shipped in from food service. Have a little pride. The best thing Benji offers is their beef hot dog. Which I can make at home. It's a shame that they treat their customers with such disregard. read more

Benji's is good and probably the closest thing to a "NY deli" that Milwaukee has. This location is in a strip mall and thus has plenty of parking which is nice. The interior is basic and fairly small - maybe seating for 30 and 1/2 dozen counter seats. You can get breakfast any time, burgers and salads but you're here for the classics - corned beef, pastrami and soup. Every day there is mushroom barley & chicken soup plus some specials - today was cabbage borscht. I opted for the "mish mosh" variety of chicken soup ($5) and it proved to be full of rice, noodles, a meat filled dumpling and a matzo ball. A hearty bowl to say the least! I appreciated that their matzo is nice and fluffy - not gummy at all. I would have loved to see some veggies in there but I guess that's not how they do it. I also had 2 potato pancakes ($2.50/ea - they are homemade and served with applesauce and sour cream. They're also boring - I mean, they're fine but devoid of any kind of seasoning. I'd skip them next time. The Mister had a Rueben and liked it - Benji's has very good corned beef - what we had was very lean (I prefer that). Definitely some of the best corned beef in the city but quite pricey ($14-ish) for something that wasn't piled especially high. They do serve it with a good spot deli pickle. Our service was good - food cane out quickly and we were regularly checked on. Overall, Benji's is good when you get the craving but not necessarily a place I'd seek out. read more

The break is freshly toasted with caraway seeds. The cucumber is perfectly picked; ideal balance of crunchiness and acidity. There is just enough hint of coleslaw and thousand island dressing to moisten the sandwich. Swiss cheese used is wholesome. It's locally sourced Wisconsin cheese. And the meats. It's something else. Everything from corned beef, pastrami, salami, and pepper beef is in it. I always get my meats grilled. At Benji's, there are no compromises, no corners cut, no stone left unturned. I used to rave about this place because their food was so good, but I had an issue today that makes me never want to give this place money ever again. I had been ordering their caesar salad with grilled chicken for a while and it was always so tasty. The best dressing I've found in the city so far, in fact. But this past week when I ordered, they changed their dressing from what it was to a caesar vinaigrette. It does not work at all for the salad, the acidity is gross with the smoked bits of chicken and the consistency soaks into their amazing croutons and turns them into sour mush instantly. I called to ask if there had been a mistake, if the dressing that used to work so well would be coming back, and the man working (who didn't give me his name) that answered the phone was so incredibly rude and disrespectful that I will never be eating there again. read more

No complaints from anyone -- food was hot (if it was supposed to be). My soup and grilled cheese were great! Shared a piece of carrot cake at the end - just carrot, no nuts or pineapple extras. Very moist and dense, great end to the meal. The only small negative was the service - she wasn't happy about the separate checks, and never asked if we wanted beverages other than water. Everything we ever had at Benjy's was terrific. Jewish delicatessens in the Midwest are far superior to any and every deli outside of that section of the country. Quantity, New York's M.O. does not beat quality. The corned beef is more flavorful, the bread, unseeded rye, is outstanding with soft body and a crunchy crust, and the rest of the fare is equally outstanding. While Chicago is but 90 miles away, it's unnecessary to leave Milwaukee for deli food. read more

Is there such a thing as a "legacy" restaurant? Let me explain. I grew up with the original Benji's - from the beginning. My family had many many memories unfold there. We moved away and just returned after a 30 year hiatus. So excited to go to the old deli that we went to both locations. Meh! Neither the food nor service would ever bring us back for more! The "famed " corn beef was flavorless though the chicken matzo ball soup was good. The pastrami was better than the corned beef and the chicken liver salad was generous but also dry. Don't even waste money on the borscht! No belly lox or whitefish or sable- only nova. In the old days an Israeli named Shlomo could expertly slice lox paper thin. We frequented Benjamin's when he served fabulous food in Shorewood. We also supported Diane's restaurant downtown. We purchased lunches to take away from the restaurant in Brown Deer believing the tradition would be followed. Massive disappointment. The pastrami sandwiches had little and few slices of meat, but were priced at $15 each. We bought a quart of chicken noodle soup, to find the container was 75% noodles, little broth and virtually no chicken. Lunch was a total ripoff. Stay away. read more
