I would give them one star other than the folks who actually installed the water heater were great. The office is totally incompetent. The water heater at my shop went out while I was away. I instructed my son to contact Benla who had replaced our home water heater a few years ago. As per my instructions he told them he would be the contact for site access, and I would be the contact for everything else. They never contacted me, not once, even though they had my cell phone and email. They gave him an estimate, which he read to me over the phone I told him it was OK but Benla never sent me anything and no one ever signed the work order. When the job was done they never sent an invoice until a month later to him threatening him with collection as it was month past due. When he told me this I said have them contact me, which they never did. When I called them it went straight to voicemail, which they never returned. They continued to hassle him. Finally 5 weeks after installation they sent me and invoice via email and statement showing my account was more than 30 days past due, and continued to hassle my son. The invoice was from a no reply email so I couldn't even tell them I was mailing a check that same week. They continued to hassle him even after he told them I had mailed a check. I finally told him if they ever contacted him again to tell them I had paid the invoice and if they had any further issues to contact me. This was nearly 2 months ago and the only communication I have ever received from them was the past due statement. I finally called them (straight to voicemail again) told them they had been paid, and if they ever contacted my son again I would report them to the Better Business Bureau. That was days ago, and I have never received a reply. So unless you want to be treated like a deadbeat by incompetent people, avoid Benla. read more

received 4-5 quotes from plumbing companies to replace my hot water heater, but went with these guys as they only did hot water heaters, specifically asked for all copper piping, also a new shut off valve, all supply pipe was copper but all the fitting were shark bite and not pressed or soldered! Installer said he did not have the proper tool on his truck. Pressure relief valve piping was plastic even though original was copper. called the office and a guy came out and said it was fine. worst experience ever. Two workers left muddy footprints all over laundry room floor, food wrappers on top of washer and dryer, charged $180 for a part they never installed. A manager came out to check the work a few days later and discovered they had not bled the lines and had somehow wrecked some part in the overflow tank that he had to replace. 9 months later today, a plumber informs me they never set the correct pressure in the overflow tank and it has likely been making city water meter readers read high values on my street water meter doing to rocking in the meter caused by the overflow tank not having the correct pressure set in it. Benla came in with a competitive quote on a Hybrid water heater. The install went smoothly. The people that came out for the quote as well as the installer were masked. The water heater has been working great, about a week down the road, plenty of hot water. Because we were getting a hybrid system we were eligible for a $500 rebate. Several days later I was on the Seattle City Light (SCL) rebate web site where it listed the things needed to apply for it, including a receipt for the purchase of the water heater from the contractor, in this case Benla, showing the contractor hadn't already taken and applied the rebate. I contacted Scott at Benla to ask for this, it was not something he was familiar with. He invested several hours of phone work to pin down exactly what needed to be done. The SCL site was incorrect. The process had changed back in April and contrary to SCL's instructions, the home owner that had a qualifying water heater installed by a contractor could not apply themselves. It had to go through the contractor. So, Scott sent a $500 check to us, then he has to recover that from his supplier who in turn has to recover it from the agency sponsoring the rebate. Quite the mess but because of Scott's persistence and professionalism we got the rebate. Overall it was a good experience and we would have no qualms in recommending Benla to others. read more

A family owned business that is local. I love the fact that they called earlier than they were supposed to arrive to let me know that an emergency came in and that they would be about an hour late. They arrived and were professional. (i.e. made sure to lay down a drop cloth etc)...While the old water heater was draining, they helped me out with two home repair issues that I had arise in my place that week (or morning as the case can be). They reattached my light fixture to my ceiling as it had come down earlier that week and that morning the pipe behind my sink disconnected sending water all over my bathroom. They were able to reattach the pipe with no difficulty. They saved me a call to my handyperson/plumber which was awesome! The water heater is working great and takes up smaller space than my old one and it set up well! They have been servicing my condo building for 10+ years from what I understand...In fact the old water heater was from them which I realized as they were removing it. read more

It was easy and hassle free. I am in Capitol Hill in Seattle and called them. Described my situation and ended up needing a new water heater because of its age. I was able to send photos of the current water heater via email which made it simple to describe the model and its location (it was in a small closet in a condo). Scheduled the time window when they would arrive which turned out to be the next day. Dave called before he arrived. Great guy who knows his stuff and very careful to ensure mats were put down to prevent any damages to the floor. Honest as well. He said the straps that were on the water heater could be reused (saving a good chuck of money) instead of having to pay for essentially the same straps for the new one. I called several companies to check on the price to replace the water heater. Benla ended up being slightly cheaper (~50$ less) than the other companies, and we had previously gone with them, so we went with them again. After calling them three times, they assured me that the price was to be set at 1500$, this included everything that needed to be replaced, the labor, and part of the warranty. The appointment time was at 12PM but they showed up after 130PM instead and finished around 4 PM. Once it was finished, I was billed almost 1800$. They reused the earthquake straps we already had, so that we didn't need to be charged. When I asked them why was it not the said price, they said because not everything was included in said price. According to the contractor, the person who previously installed it (this same company) had put the smaller tank right above the water heater, which they weren't supposed to. In doing so, it overheated and caused a gas leak (potentially endangering the rest of the household), and that was what needed to be replaced. So conclusion, our water tank was fine and did not need to be replaced, it was the expansion tank that was leaking and needed to be replaced. They replaced our water tank and the expansion tank without first informing us of the extra charge an potentially saving us the money of replacing something that was not broken and what they were going to do instead of the agreed upon information. read more

Honestly, before I called I didn't even know what the expansion tank was, and the gentleman on the phone kindly explained what it was and how it could be replaced - either by them or even by me. I had many problems with Benla Water Heaters and would NOT recommend them. I paid a good price for a new tankless hot water heater. Benla installed it and then left a gas leak in my home. They were unable to find the gas leak when they returned to fix it. I then called Puget Sound Energy, who found the leak and turned off my main gas line. I made many calls to Benla insisting on repair, which they did only after 2 further service calls to my home. read more

So Benla installed a replacement warranty hot water heater for us in 2011. Today it went out again... Called the manufacturer and they gave us an authorization code to have it replaced. My husband first called Benla because their sticker was on the tank from the previous install. The manufacturer gave us some names of other companies but it was a Friday and they would not pick up the phones. The service tech who answered was nice until I questioned him on the $425 install charge on a warranty repair. He then proceeded to say that it would cost $1275 plus tax if we had to pay for everything. I told him I would call him back and called the manufacturer back. They said the water heater's MSRP was $445 RETAIL and that BENLA was no longer on contract thru them (wonder why?). That means that there is a $400 deficit. Like the previous reviewer said - MARK UP ON PARTS - plus he started arguing with me stating that my house was the problem when had never even stepped foot in the place! BOTTOM LINE: I can add - and apparently the person on the phone didn't think I could. He refused to tell me the MSRP on the water tank without labor (445.00) and wanted to charge another $425 for labor and that is not even close to the $1275 I was quoted if I had to pay for everything myself.
