    Hushpuppies with Cajun butter

My boyfriend and I recently had an unforgettable 5th-anniversary dinner here! McKay and Jess provided outstanding service for us throughout the evening. The food was delicious -- we ordered the hush puppies, stuffed quail, steak and frites, and maple sweet potato cheesecake. This restaurant made our celebration truly special -- it's a place we'll cherish for years to come! Thank you again McKay and Jess. We really appreciate the hardworking staff at Benne On Eagle!

We came for dinner at Benne on Eagle to celebrate a special occasion. Food and service was amazing and I would definitely recommend it! It looks like they change their menu somewhat frequently, but when we went, I remember really liking the curry fish, lemon cake, and carrot cake in particular. I took a look at their latest menu and am drooling at all of the new dishes. Go check it out!

We heard good things about this place for dinner. Yet, we were staying at the Foundry, which offered it for room service. The wait staff was very friendly. I ordered the avocado toast with scrambled eggs and potatoes. The eggs were salty, but the avocado toast was good. The potatoes were average. We'll have to see if dinner lives up to the hype because the restaurant looks very cool when we walked by.

If you want to enjoy some good afrocentric food in the historic black district of Asheville, make sure to go for dinner, not for breakfast. I had read good things about this restaurant, and I wanted to check it out. I went for breakfast, and I found out that generally their breakfast menu is pretty plain Jane and made for residents of the hotel who don't want to try anything new. So, it's no different from any other breakfast place. I wanted the shrimp and grits, but it turns out they only do that for brunch. I went for the chicken and waffles, and they told me that waffles and pancakes were not available that morning. I was going to get up to leave, and they decided that maybe they could make a waffle. The chicken was not a specialty flavorful, and the waffle was a waffle. I went out of my way to go here, and it certainly is not worth that. I had read that their head chef was from the south, but it turns out that their head chef has changed to someone from South America, and so some of the more unusual items on the menu are really from South America more than the South. although they do still have fried green tomatoes, which are a carryover from the previous head chef. So, it's a black owned business, but don't go expecting good soul food. It's just a kind of fancy restaurant.

Benne on Eagle was a big score for us! We came for breakfast (more like brunch) twice. We missed the dinner menu because we were there on Sunday & Monday nights - their two closed nights. But our two dining experiences was enough to keep Benne top of our list to come back for more. The shrimp and grits were amazing, as were the chicken & waffles (amazing flavors), fruit & yogurt, blueberry mascarpone pancakes. Service was extremely friendly. Brought smiles and good feels! Can't wait to come here again on our next adventure to Asheville! We loved Benne on Eagle and think you will too! Until next time...

Great atmosphere! Fresh and delicious food. Excellent service. We had the Farmers hash - delicious root vegetable flavors, and the BLT - simple sandwich with elevated flavor. Some creative cocktail offerings would be preferred to the limited options, but 10/10 will be back again.

I'm overall disappointed by my meal at Benne on Eagle. This restaurant had come highly recommended and given the prices, I had an expectation that Benne would deliver on more fronts than not. We order cornbread and crispy pork belly as appetizers. The pork was the most delicious, melt in your mouth experience with a tasty and sweet pistachio and apple butter glaze. The cornbread, however was dry and falling apart. Thankfully the flavor of butter carried through and made it somewhat appetizing, but yeah. It was dry. I told my server this and she said didn't say anything. We then ordered the salmon cakes, the lamb meatballs and the octopus. Overall, the protein for each of these three meals came out cooked well and tasting great. I liked the spice in the salmon and the potato salad to cool your taste buds off. The accompaniments for the lamb and octopus were completely off. The octopus came with pinto beans and tomatoes. This side has zero flavor and desperately needed salt. It was so bland it would have been better to not have it included in the plate at all. It tasted like it came straight out of the can. The same thing can be said for the lentils with the lamb meat balls. Completely flavorless. I was so disappointed - a good meal should have consistent flavor and dynamic textures and when only the protein accomplishes this, it's dissatisfying and a big letdown. The wine and cocktail selection was fantastic and our server was great. I appreciated that the host allowed us to change our reservation time for an early slot. Overall, this restaurant was fine but I was really expecting more.

Breakfast heaven!!! Flap jack heaven!!! Best I've ever had. No syrup necessary! They come with this incredible jam and a bit of chintilly cream. I also had the locally foraged mushroom hash and it was too good.

When you walk in the front door of Benne on Eagle you are greeted by a large portrait of the prolific poet, James Baldwin. I started my meal with the cornbread and crispy pork belly. The pairing of the pork, apple butter and pistachio was a combination I was not expecting to be so darn delicious. My entrée consisted of fried catfish and collard greens. The collard greens were super yummy and were very fresh as if they had been picked from the garden that day. I closed my meal by ordering the banana pudding.

Went here for brunch since the other brunch joints were full. The place was very pretty and loved the artwork around and the slightly industrial vibe. Expected a lot from the food since the menu sounded very interesting and the prices were on the higher end compared to other brunch joints. What we got: 1. Huevos rancheros: alright. Honestly forgettable. Meh. 2. Chicken and waffles: expected so much better than this. The waffles came out soggy. The chicken was also hella soggy. Sweet with the honey but where is that habanero? Too sweet and not balanced. Probably one of the biggest disappointments of a chicken and waffle rendition. 3. Shrimp and grits: this was good. Very rich and comforting as most shrimp and grits are. Good flavor. A bit too rich and buttery for my taste but still good. Would have preferred the grits to be less fine and more gritty since it was practically just mush. Overall, meh brunch especially for the price. You're better off going elsewhere. Nice place and ambience though. Maybe a 2.5

Yardbird at the front, fufu at the back
    Yolanda Y.

Amazing food - Loved the African inspired flavor profile, very unusual but it was very well done. The chef absolutely did a fantastic job with the dishes. Strongly recommending this place if you are into trying creative dishes! However, portion is so small for the price. The yardbird was okay, since it was a half chicken (still pricy for $36, but at least it was a big entree). Fufu dish was SO tasty, but it was SO tiny. Very disappointing for the portion size since it was $24 - as the photo shows, it was more of an appetizer size. It would be nice to even add some type of sides to make the meal more filling - the chips were quite light, and we had to get another meal after this one because we were not full :( So glad I tried this place, one of my favorite meals here; though with the size of the entree it would unlikely to be my go-to place in Asheville (given there are so many amazing places in the city!)

So, one thing I don't do is travel to a city and eat at the same place more than once. So you know a place is bomb when I eat at it three times. Twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Benne's ambience is an elevated industrial Southern spaces surrounded by portraits of notable Black icons. The service was stellar and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and any of the cocktails.

    Trout

This is the restaurant that serves breakfast and offers room service for the attached hotel The Foundry. As such, I had the pleasure of dining here for breakfast two years times and once for dinner. The menu options are minimum, but there is at least one option for everyone. We had the trout. The shrimp Caesar salad, the cornbread and Mac and cheese. When I tell you that everything was tasty, even a simple caesar salad!! The food is cooked to order and it is clear that they use fresh ingredients. Breakfast was just as amazing. An Example of them using fresh ingredients: the second day that we had breakfast we went closer to the end of breakfast time. Unfortunately we were advised that they ran out of oranges and were not able to squeeze additional orange juice! Yep, the orange juice is squeezed daily! The service was not really consistent. Two out of three times it was decent. The last day of breakfast could have been better. We arrived towards the end of breakfast and there was a wait. No one really asked us what we needed. We finally asked if we could have a seat. The staff were not particularly friendly and also did not appear to be in a big rush to accommodate the crowd. However, since two out of the three were decent I am only taking off 1 star. Overall I think this is a fantastic option if you are in Asheville, NC I personally would dine here again.
