We stopped into Benne's right before closing and they were kind enough to still let us in, which we really appreciated. We were craving espresso martinis, and they quickly made a couple for us. Nice touch -- the glasses were chilled, which always makes a difference. That said, we do think the martinis may have been missing the classic foam "bubble" and espresso bean garnish. Honestly though, since they were closing and still accommodated us, we were just grateful they made them at all. If it had been mentioned that they'd be quick, simplified versions due to closing, we would've completely understood -- just something small for expectation-setting. Now let's talk about the coconut cake -- absolutely amazing. It's $17 for a slice, but the portion is HUGE. Easily shareable, and we still had to take some to-go. Super moist, flavorful, and worth every bite if you're a coconut fan. Also worth noting: the outdoor patio is pet-friendly, which is always a big plus for us. Great spot to stop with your pup while enjoying dessert or a cocktail. Overall, a positive experience -- especially thanks to the staff's hospitality at closing time. We'd definitely come back (earlier next time!) to enjoy the full experience.

Came here as part of a culinary experience with my team. Had the coconut cake and that was spot on delicious! Everyone else enjoyed the espresso martinis and raved about them! Can't wait to come back and try other cakes!

I came here with a friend one slow evening as the rain began to fall in sheets. We were the only ones there and were treated with ultimate Southern hospitality as the two employees were gracious and accommodating. They seemed unbothered by the slow night keeping themselves busy by organizing, cleaning, and inventory checks in between checking in on my friend and I. We came here for desserts having heard nothing of the place from anyone. We had walked past it the night before and fancied dropping in after dinner nearby. Once the rain started we settled as we had not brought an umbrella. My friend ordered two slices of cake not anticipating they could feed a small village of people. She thought the coconut cake was a bit dry but absolutely loved, loved, loved the slice of chocolate cake she had. I decided to drink my dessert and started with the La Provence which was a bright gin drink, very florally especially with the lavender. The Ultimate Coconut Martini was fabulous. It was creamy, well balanced, and the vanilla soared on coconut flavor. I am a fan of a great dessert cocktail. All in all it was a fantastic moment out!

Desserts and alcohol!!!! Best of both worlds. Take your kids and enjoy a drink with it. Great place, very elegant and quiet. In the back is a cute little court yard for an outdoor summer date with your significant others. Your "bartender " will bring your alcoholic beverages to your table too. Their coconut cake is a must have.

This was the last stop on our Charleston food tour and it did not disappoint! I'd had this amazing cake before at dinner at Peninsula Grill and was so excited for the rest of my party to try it. Service was great, cake was unreal, and the space is super cute. Definitely a must go!

Service by Jacob was excellent, some of the best we have had on this trip. The cake was great, and the espresso martinis were perfect. The ambiance is very euro chill. Highly recommend.

The coconut cake made super famous by the likes of Oprah and Tom Cruise. Bah, who cares what they think? Try it for yourself!

Whelllll, our tour guide, Alice told us all about this crazy big coconut cake and we were all so full from our foodie tour, that we were thinking: No WAY it could tempt us. But I'm here to tell you it lives up to the HYPE! I had a THIRD of a piece and it was delicious and creamy. Had my fill til next trip!

We had this on our list to try because of the Coconut cake. The cake itself while pricey is very good. We almost didn't try it because service was so bad that we almost left. There were very few people in the restaurant at that time and we sat until we almost left. Literally believe a manager had to come over to help us. Again the cake is great but the service was not.

Coconut cake for the win! This was our last food stop of our Charleston trip. I had read about this cake, so I had to give it a try. My husband and I shared the cake and still couldn't finish it all. It was so delicious and I'm sure I'll have dreams about it. Our waitress was helpful and kind. I loved the seating choices.

Came here for breakfast twice since we were staying next door at the Planters Inn. We had the smoked salmon, yogurt parfait, and both kinds of egg bites. The food was tasty and the coffee was fine. We also had the coconut cake which was good but not all that it was made out to be, especially for the price. It had a mild coconut flavor. Servers were nice, seemed frazzled when busy. Nice cafe ambiance with booths and tables.

When you're craving dessert but you only have the same boring spots to go to? Just kidding! Benne's is there for you! I'm so glad we have another dessert spot in Charleston and am sore to just now be learning about it. We snagged the cheesecake and an espresso martini. I'll be honest, I don't like cheesecake but I know my boyfriend does so I made sure we ordered it. That is probably the best slice of cheesecake I have ever had. It wasn't too sweet, not too cream cheesy and the CRUST was perfect. The interior is really pretty and we were fortunate to come in before it got too busy. Benne's is a nice treat that is well known for their "world famous coconut cake". They have an assortment of drinks and dessert options. I look forward to going back!

Amazing coconut cake. Perfect sweetness. They even ship their cakes! Expresso Martini was a bit bitter and unnecessary with the sweetness of the cake. We shared 1piece cake between 3of us and it was plenty!

Best Coconut Cake Ever! Our shuttle driver must sell hundreds of slices. We got dropped off in front of this place and after hearing how delicious it was, we just had to try it. It did not disappoint! Their spinach and ricotta croissants were delicious also.

This seems to be a tourist trap. The drinks and pastries are average. The service was okay, but they did get our order wrong.

Don't let the name deter you if you are not a gin person because they have many options with different types of liquors. One tip: sit at the bar if you can, the set up is stunning especially for taking photos! The cocktail menu was moderately extensive with two full pages of complex and simple cocktails. Honestly, it was so difficult to choose what drink to get because I wanted to get everything on the menu. The bartenders were so attentive and talented - their implementation of each cocktail was even better than the menu descriptions. Not only were the drinks delicious but also beautifully presented. They have some bar bites as well as quite a few small and large plates, we got the pretzels which to my absolute surprise were so good! You can tell the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. The surprise star of the night, though, was the grilled cheese. Calling it a grilled cheese almost feels unfair because this thing was next-level. Perfectly crisp on the outside, rich and gooey on the inside, and paired with the cocktails so well that we were talking about it long after we left. Sometimes the simplest thing on a menu ends up stealing the show. The atmosphere strikes that perfect Charleston balance of classy, cozy, and effortlessly cool. Great service, great drinks, and one of the most memorable grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. If you're in Charleston and appreciate a serious cocktail program, The Gin Joint is a must-visit. Finds your table, if you arrive early for a reservation we had luck with them seating us and he says a kind goodbye as we left each time. Nice list of 3 mocktails so even if not consuming alcohol one can look to play the part at the table and enjoy the flavor notes of a well made cocktail. The first meal we had was a bit of a work/get together meal. We ordered an assortment of items off of the menu and created a more tapas menu. The charcuterie board we picked the cheeses for and it was lovely. All as expected and quite surprised to find a cheddar I enjoyed. Came with some grapes, figs, nuts, honey and I think mustard. Glazed carrots were phenomenal. Heartily enjoyed the beet salad and thought the presentation was quite pretty. Lamb lettuce wraps are alright. Not my favorite of all the dishes served but delivered as promised, nicely cooked and presented. Spouse really liked the lamb wraps and were a stand out dish to them. Meatballs are excellent truly great texture and flavor. Escargot was a fun take on a classic dish. Finished with a unique strudel in its presentation it was quite pleasant. Spouse liked the peanut butter chocolate dessert. For brunch, I had the carrot ginger soup. Which I must say was a total delight. The soup had the hallmark texture and base flavor of the carrot ginger but it had a beautiful breath of savory and some heat seasoning wise to it. It was quite an elevated soup and heartily enjoyed! I followed the carrot soup with a French toast. I am all for softly scrambled eggs but the French toast was a touch undercooked. (I did not let the restaurant know or give them the chance to make right. I regularly eat soft boiled eggs and soft scrambled so I felt comfortable with consuming them.) Strawberries were ripe and tasty. The whipped cream was gorgeous in thickness and flavor. One in law had the caesar salad with croutons and grilled chicken. Their bowl was left clean so while they are not the talkative of sorts they did seem to enjoy it. Ordered a baguette with butter. Unfortunately the butter never made it to the table but the baguette was enjoyed. Spouse had the Azur burger with the side of tapas style potatoes. All was cooked properly to temperature and texture. Flavor and taste as promised. Wasn't their favorite dish at Azur as we had tried so many lovely dishes a few evenings before. But it did deliver on what was represented in the menu. The dining room is beautiful, and the ambiance is excellent. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality level or price point of the restaurant. When entrées range from $65-$70 for fish, $80+ for steaks, and side dishes approach $14 or more, guests reasonably expect an elevated and attentive dining experience. Throughout the evening, our server seemed rushed and disengaged. Despite our efforts to be friendly and conversational, interactions felt brief and transactional. A drink order was delivered incorrectly, and rather than improving as the meal progressed, the service became increasingly impersonal. We never felt particularly welcomed or valued as guests. A special night out with a $300-$400 check should feel memorable for the right reasons. While the food and atmosphere were good, the overall experience fell short of what we have come to expect from restaurants operating in this category and at this price level. We are glad we gave it a try, but in the future we'll likely choose other Charleston-area restaurants that deliver a more polished and hospitality-focused experience when entertaining family and friends from out of town.
