Technically, I visited Freddo twice on the recommendation of a server at another Charleston restaurant. Their locale is small with a few tables and chairs outside, and a bench with two stools inside. The owners have Argentinian roots and sell alfajores, smoothies, frappe's, milk shakes, and gelato. I've tried the passion fruit smoothie and the caramel milk shake. Both were exceptionally good, but definitely on the rich side! Their whip cream is also amazing! A drink here is easily the caloric equivalent of a whole meal! I loved it so much, I've returned. My sister got a dulce de leche frappe and enjoyed it! She thought it was a good mix of coffee and gelato. Bottomline: Freddo is a great place to get a sweet treat on King St! For my regular-size caramel milk shake, I paid about $14.69 (with tax and tip)--definitely not cheap, but a smaller (and cheaper) size is available. read more

[Empanada review] Overall: Airport-quality empanadas for a premium price. The good: The empanadas were flaky and buttery, and the gentleman behind the counter was friendly and quick. Some issues that I had, but won't be overly harsh on: One, they've decided to be on Doordash. I try not to use food apps, but if I get a really good deal it can convince me to try a new place, and maybe if it's good enough I'll shop there again. However, this place didn't seem to have figured the system out and my order came as a surprise to them when I arrived. The other problem was that I ordered a "gelato panini", which sounded nice but which they were out of, so they gave me a bit of gelato and a cup and extra empanadas (on top of the two I'd already ordered), which wasn't quite what I wanted but I figure it's good food and there were people waiting behind me so I didn't want to mess around. The gelato I got was a banana split flavor; banana with chocolate flakes and dulce de leche, which sounded good enough to get me to pass up mint chip (which I hardly ever do) and was quite a luxurious flavor. Conversely, I enjoyed my empanadas later, when the aroma of the flaky crust started getting to me. The corn and the spinach versions both had a mouthwatering cheese and onion filling in addition to the vegetable of choice. This place does sweet and savory both well. Notably, an empanada is a practical sort of food to carry around and fills a niche that I don't know is filled by anything else in the robust Charleston restaurant scene. Despite the issues with ordering, they were good enough that I could see coming back some day and just ordering in person. read more

Freddo offers Argentinian style gelato and empanadas. Besides this location, the only other USA locations are in the Miami metro area. Our favorite flavor of their gelato is the coconut & dulce de leche. It was so good. We also wholeheartedly recommend trying their empanadas which are so flaky and delicious. I ordered a passion fruit smoothie and it was probably one of the best passion fruit-flavored things I have ever had. This is the empanada I've been searching for!! Soft flaky crust but not annoyingly flaky to where it just falls apart. The chicken is deliciously moist and flavorful! A nice baked crust. Store is pretty small but they have a variety of items (gelato, cookies, but other non dessert things like empanadas) but we each got a different type gelato and both were excellent. The gelato was very good. I got the Hazelnut Chocolate gelato. Wow! There was a boat load of nuts in there. I loved it! Because it was Argentine gelato instead of Italian gelato, the presentation was different and not as expected. With Italian gelato, they make it fresh and refrigerate it in stainless steel tubs, and they make it look pretty. With this Argentine gelato, it was stored in large ice cream tubs. Desserts are meant to be the occasional treat. That's what I was taught when I was younger. It's not necessarily something you have at the end of every meal, but once in a while it feels nice to have something sweet. Like I've said before, I got fat off of fried chicken, not cake. When you treat dessert like this, you don't find it too hard to drop about $15 on it for two people. Yeah, Freddo's is pricey, but well worth it in my opinion. Been here a few times and the staff is very nice. They don't even chase off the little kids that come in to sample some flavours. My coworker and I were just walking down King Street and we wanted something sweet. Yes, we had hit up an ice cream joint earlier, but this was several hours later and we felt we had burnt enough calories. We happened upon Freddo's and walked in. I immediately scanned the menu for something fruity... PASSION FRUIT SORBET! Yes, gawd. Got a small cup of it and sat down to enjoy it. It was smooth and creamy. Not as tangy as passion fruit normally is, but the taste was definitely recognizable. I think my coworker got cookies and cream and said it was good. ... So we went back a few times. Don't judge! I'm an adult and I can eat gelato for breakfast and dinner. On the second visit, I got the mango sorbet and the passion fruit for my mom. When my mom likes something, she doesn't stray far. Every single visit since then, she's gotten the passion fruit. I've asked her to get other flavours, but she just won't. She did taste my dulce de leche with strawberries and the Italian marscapone with raspberries and agreed that they were tasty, but nothing compares to passion fruit sorbet. I'm coming back. Trust me. There are several flavors to choose from, all of which you can taste if you'd like. I tasted a couple, which were very sweet to me, and decided on a less sweet flavor: coconut dulce de leche. This absolutely rocking flavor is perfect. Has chunks of coconut, is a little sweet, and very creamy. I see how this place has become popular. They give large portions even for a small cone. I can't even imagine if I ordered a large cone and what that would look like. Even let you choose two flavors if you'd like. There is minimal seating, so this is essentially a grab and go location. However, the quality of product makes it totally worth it.
